Thanks for? making this video. I have to understand how a catalytic converter works for my Chemistry midterm. And this just made it a whole lot easier. :)

"a car has to travel about six miles befor the cat will reach ideal temp" WRONG!, the catalytic converter reaches ideal temps in under five mins at idle even on vary late model vehicals. The air pump system speeds up this reaction helping heat the cat up to ideal temp. If the car was traveling under load it would take under a 60 seconds to reach ideal operational temps. I dont know where they pulled the? "six mile" figure from.

That explains why so many people including me have had their catalytic converters? stolen...

Well, I didn't? know that: Catalytic Converter

1300 °F = 704 °C 600 °F = 315 °C?

i bet my 302 v8 heats up my cats in a few minutes of being on lol? solution to those 6 miles of gas, every one start driving v8s again lol

This was flipping awesome! They actually show you? what's inside the the converter.

I love how this vid makes it? seem like vehicle exhaust is perfectly safe and harmless. Cute.

"car has to travel about six? miles befor the catalytic reaches its ideal operateing temp" This statement is incorrect asumeing the cars smog pump (A.I.R. Pump) is operateing correctly.

Because they contain precious metals that can be recycled. Platinum is the most-active catalyst and is widely used. Palladium and rhodium are two other precious metals used. Cerium, iron, manganese and nickel? are also used, although each has its own limitations.

why are all scrap or salvage stores people obsessed with the catalytic converters ? I was selling an old car and everyone one of them asked only two questions ( make sure to have the cars title and it comes with a complete catalytic converter ) , he wasn't worried about the engine or gear or how many miles i had . could? you please explain ?

Simply put when a cat plugs up it didn't die, it was murdered somehow. That is why the MIL flashes on an OBDII car when there is a misfire, they overheat the converter and it melts down and plugs. BTW the Prius briefly? uses both ignition timing retard and higher throttle levels when cold to rapidly light off the cat, it can do this thanks to the HV battery and MG2 making up for the temporary loss of power.

I was wondering where the "I cut the damn thing off and I can't tell the difference" comments were, but you said you deleted some, Thanks. I can relate wholeheartedly, I was talking to someone about the cat being plugged up on their car and I said "well you could just punch it out but then the MIL would be on" to which they replied "oh, it was? already on" I was like well why do you think it plugged up in the first place. The people who don't properly maintain their cars are the real problem.

The nitrogen passes through the second? block unchanged. CO2 is nothing compared to the NOx and HC (unburned fuel) combining via sunlight in the air to form smog.
By: wigleypg. on 04 Jan 11, 11:14:40
Marginally increasing CO2 is an expense consuming some Oxygen and converting some Carbon into CO2, yes, but it overwhelmingly beats leaving CO in the atmosphere. Cats do produce CO2 (which contributes to global? warming) but at very low concentrations.
By: wigleypg. on 04 Jan 11, 11:10:22
Not sure I understand your question? The benefit to elimination of acutely toxic gases (NOx, CO and HC) to O2, H2O, N2 and H2O outweighs the contribution of CO2 to the atmosphere, compared to the already massive production of CO2 from burning fossil fuels? in? the engine already.

They? do.

Too bad they can't somehow make a heating element inside the converter? that turns on the min. the vehicle starts and stays on until the converter reaches a certain operatoring temp then shuts off. By then the gases flowing through it will keep it at the proper temp

Is it possible to set up a backyard lab to? recover the metals yourself. I've found out almost every scrap metal thus far. This one there's not any info I've found yet. besides building some internal arc process that costs millions. Pleas some on know how.
