CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme Represents the Survival of the Fittest

While critics of the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme cry foul, taxation, government intervention and needless bureaucracy, proponents argue that the weighty legislation represents commonsense. There is undoubtedly a conflict between economic recovery and the need to achieve sustainability in many respects, but in other respects they should be viewed as one. Economic recovery should dictate that efficiencies are put in place to help ensure that such a bad downturn is not a return visitor.

Do some organizations have their heads in the sand? Everyone must know of the threats posed by climate change and the need to move to be sustainable. This confusion may be at the root of the problem revealed by surveys, which say that in the UK, even though a lot of publicity has been allocated, organizations are confused by the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme.

5000 or so organizations are expected to be directly involved in the program. They have already referred to their 2008 energy and electricity use to calculate what their overall positions will be during 2009. As they prepare to register and start compliance in the new year they make take some solace from the fact that the true weight of the program does not really arrive until 2013. In the meantime, however, fines and other restrictions still await those who are behind.

The major industrialized nations are all watching the UK with keen interest as the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme rolls out. A "cap and trade" program such as this can be severely punitive to those companies who, for one reason or another, are unable to achieve efficiencies. Essentially, the need to balance the right to buy and emit carbon with all of their peers.

The fittest will survive as the scheme rolls out, as not only will there be fines awaiting those who cannot comply, but due to the fact that carbon will be essentially a tradable commodity, the cost of business will also increase. As a league table will be published, reputations will undoubtedly be hurt, to add insult to injury.

The severe economic downturn has really done a number on a majority of organizations around the world. As these companies emerge they should focus on the need to be sustainable as well and take a really good look inward at their very makeup. Regeneration forces the organization to really understand how they operate and focuses attention on survival, first and foremost.

CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme -- Final Changes

Ever since the concept of the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme was announced, the UK government has been proactive in seeking feedback from the community and the companies involved. The project is now ready to get underway and kicks off in April of 2010. Certain surveys, however, have shown that a number of organizations are yet to engage and do not fully understand what they need to do.

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is mandatory for those organizations that use more than 6000 MWh of electricity, which roughly equates to about 0.5m in annual energy bills. 5000 or so businesses must comply and should clearly note that the terms for qualification determine an analysis of 2008 consumption figures. 2009 was the year for preparation and those companies that are still behind are taking significant risks.

Although the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme officially commences in April of 2010, the succeeding cycle, incorporating three key phrases, will be just a precursor of what is to come. Eventually, the scheme will operate on an auction basis, with organizations being forced to trade carbon emission allowances within a capped market, with clear ramifications for those companies not able to achieve efficiencies.

When the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme was first proposed, it was known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment and this name has now been officially changed during final consultations. Originally, the government had proposed that organizations purchase their annual carbon emission quota each year, with the first purchase due in April 2011 relating both to 2010 and 2011 emissions. This effectively doubled the cash commitment at that point in time, but this suggestion has now been abandoned.

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is intended to be revenue neutral, with organizations receiving back the funds allocated toward the purchase of carbon allowances. However, to make the scheme work, companies will be compared and inefficiencies tabled. Those who over perform will receive bonuses in addition to their refund, while those who fail to perform will receive penalties.

A survey in April of 2009 suggested that 60% of businesses affected by the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme had done little to prepare and many suggested that they would not commence action in earnest to reduce their carbon emissions until the scheme really cranked up in 2011. This is a mistake, as there are benefits for early actors. Within the first phase, organizations that sign on to the Carbon Trust Standard or install automatic smart meters will figure highly on the initial league table and enjoy significant returns over those who don't.

It seems inconceivable that some of these major organizations could be unaware of the importance of taking early action. There could be very considerable financial implications for the organization that is unable to achieve optimum efficiencies, quite apart from the lack of "common sense" decisions associated with saving money in the first place. Any attempts to reduce energy use can only benefit the company's bottom line.

It is unlikely that any further changes will be made to the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme by the British government and in April 2010 companies must officially register their participation as part of the first phase. The year commencing April 2010 is known as the "footprint year" and energy use during this period will form the basis for calculations in subsequent periods.

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme Pays the Aggressor

Although critics will always decry government intervention, many forward thinking and innovative organizations affected by the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme are nevertheless welcoming the initiative. Due to start in April of 2010, the aim is to actively reduce energy use and consequent carbon emissions in that country. The largest emitters have been identified and will now have to pay for the rights to do so. Even though payments are intended to be reimbursed, bonuses or penalties will also figure in.

Unlike some similar suggestions in other countries, notably the US, the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is designed to be revenue neutral to the taxation authorities. This in itself can be seen as quite a carrot for the aggressive organization. Company executives can now see that if they take significant steps to reduce their carbon emissions they will achieve natural efficiencies through the use of less energy, but could also receive financial bonuses if their actions turn into better-than-average results.

As a league table of results will be compiled by the British government, made available to media and the public, everyone will be able to see the relative efficiency of the big companies. If an organization is unable to perform, it may suffer reputationaly, in addition to the payment of penalties.

It is inconceivable if true, that according to one recent survey a majority of organizations affected by the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme remain passive. They appear not to have significant plans in place to start reducing their emissions and to become sustainable.

If the company thinks that it can merely comply with the letter of the regulations, eat the administration costs and not suffer any further repercussions, it is mistaken. A number of different metrics are used to determine how an organization interacts with the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme including the early action metric. Companies should seek certification by the Carbon Trust Standard or equivalent organization and install automatic meter readers throughout the site.

When the energy efficiency scheme gets underway, participation will be measured mainly by a straightforward decrease in energy use year by year, but additional modifiers come into play according to how much an organization decreases its emissions while it also grows. Additional emphasis will be put on action as each year goes by. Those who are aggressive will clearly benefit, while those who are passive will suffer.

In 2013, the scheme will mature into an auction-based operation, with an overall cap placed on the number of carbon emissions tradable across the country. This is sure to put financial pressures on carbon as a commodity and make the trading environment even less palatable to those organizations who are not proactive.

As it will be necessary to purchase carbon allowances for each following year, an organization that reduces its position in the league table through clear action and results will reduce its cash flow burden associated with this element as well. A company that views the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme as an opportunity rather than a threat may be smiling all the way to the bank.

The centerpiece of the project is a "cap and trade" trading scheme which forces heavier polluters to cut back on energy needs and emissions or be faced with stiff penalties. The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is not designed to be heavy hitting until the year 2013, but now is the time to arrange a position and start preparing accordingly before it all comes together.

Is the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme too complex and cumbersome? Many think so and believe that even though only 5000 companies are affected right now, this is just the tip of the iceberg. It is expected that a more complex and a broader program will be unveiled.

While the scheme certainly represents a challenge to organizations, it should also be viewed as an opportunity, enabling cost savings and efficiencies which might not otherwise have been achieved. After all, by driving down energy consumption and consequent emissions, the business is guaranteed to realize good savings.

Education is sure to be the biggest challenge facing organizations in the United Kingdom as the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme looms. Surveys have shown that many organizations are still uncertain, do not understand the intricacies of the program and are far from being ready.

The UK government is being somewhat cautious as they roll out their energy efficiency scheme, but those organizations who do not get on board right now or fail to comprehend what will happen in the future will certainly be worse off than those that do. People are generally afraid of change as they see it as a threat, potentially putting their organizations at a competitive disadvantage.

Figuring Out How Solar Energy Works

How solar energy works is an essential piece of information to have when you're talking about alternative forms of power. Made from silicon alloys a photovoltaic cell, or solar cell, is a non mechanical device used to convert energy directly into electrical power. Sunlight is made up of thousands and thousands of particles of energy which are photons.

Photons hold different amounts of energy that match up with the diverse wavelengths on the solar scale. When solar cells pull in a photon it can either reflect, pass completely through, or absorb into the mechanism. When the photons absorb into the solar cell, only then can they be used to make energy. After a certain amount of electricity is gained the solar cells begin to dislodge electrons from the atoms of the semiconductor.

Once energy is made, electricity is produced and released. During this, electrons become dislodged from atoms and depending on the sort of treatment done to the surface of the solar cell, then the more productive the cell will become to any electrons that are now floating free. The free electrons will migrate to the surface of the solar cell, which leaves empty spots where they were and changes the charge to positive.

Electrons that will migrate naturally to the solar cell's surface. Electrons moving from their chosen areas leave holes behind them and make that section of the cell positively charged. The same missing electrons, which are negatively charged, then move to the other end of the cell making that end negatively charged. What happens afterwards is that the cell is turned into a type of battery, with one extreme charge on side and the other on the remaining side.

When the two sides are connected by external sources, electricity gets produced and begins to flow. A solar cell can be anywhere from 0. F inches to 4 and one cell can produce 1through 2 watts of power, which isn't enough to run our smallest electronic contraptions. At least not by itself, which is why they usually come by the dozens unless inserted in a small device like a night light, outdoor lamp, etc.

The station has anemometers to measure wind, pyranometers to measure solar energy, and thermometers for temperature. Information from all of these signals are sent to an acquisition system where the data can be analyzed on a scheduled bases.

The energy sent from the electrical distribution panel is combined with other electricity going through your home from outside sources and then routes it through your building to help power your life. The use of solar energy is good way to lower your monthly bill, and that's just one of its many benefits.

Dead Rabbits Keep Swedes Warm

Resourceful Swedes are using rabbits to power a heating plant near Stockholm. This is not a joke - the frozen corpses of many thousands of wild rabbits culled each year in Stockholm's parks and managed land are being used to fuel a solid fuel heating plant in Sweden.

The rabbits are part of the thousands which are culled each year as Sweden suffers from a chronic over population of rabbits in its many parks. And the swedes in their ever practical Ikea like manner are prone to be efficient and waste nothing.

Animal rights groups are claiming that domestic pets are also being rounded up and incinerated, but have not been able to produce compelling evidence to this effect.

Mrs. Anna Johannesson of the Society for the Protection of Wild Rabbits says "Those who support the culling of rabbits think it's good to use the bodies for a good cause. But it feels like the power company is trying to turn the animals into an industry rather than look at the main problem,"

The unfortunate bunnies who are going up in smoke were the inhabitants of Stockholm's parks who are constantly culled to protect the plants and trees on which they feed. But some of them may of been tame domestic pets turned loose by owners who no longer want them, and obviously did not care what fate befell them.

Six thousand rabbits were burned last year, when their corpses were frozen and then sent to the heating plant at Karlskoga, in central Sweden, where the bodies were burnt in order to help heat the homes in the surrounding areas.

Local animal rights groups have surprisingly called for improved treatment for the wild rabbits,

Mrs. Johannesson informed the newspaper Vart Kungsholmen; "We want to see them start looking at other solutions for the rabbits. Helsinki in Finland sprays the plants to make them unappetizing and they have also set up a system of shelters for animals to be donated to. They have come much further along than us."

No one has wondered about the reason for freezing the rabbits before burning.

In such cases APFC provides good value for money since the KVAR required is minimal in terms of investment as compared to that of fixed capacitors.

The State Electricity Board (SEB's) in India has insisted on maintaining an average Power Factor above a specified limit(0.85 - 0.90 PF). This goes to prove that electricity needs to be used efficiently without which penalties added on top of the standard electricity bill. If this is the case in India at the moment imagine what will be in store in the coming years for other countries who face similar energy issues and shortage. The big question that APFC manufacturers are asked is whether there are any problems or issues with their own model of APFC. The main issues that arise in any APFC are: - Improper Design - Improper Component Size when being built - Improper Installation - Wrong connections to the Automatic Relay - A narrow band-width - Discharge Resistor or choke coils burning out. - Time Delay Relays bypassed . - Improper ventilation - Leaks within capacitors

Due to these factors the APFC manufactured results in - Higher Maintenance and frequent visits for servicing - Poorer PF raises the kVA consumed A well designed APFC control panel will have the following, make sure when investing in one that you check if these features are provided - Rust Proof Steel Material is used to create the APFC Panels - Independent fuses are used for circuits - Harmonic current needs to be minimized - APFC contains Micro-Controller along with some digital computation - The capacitors are protected against any kind of damage such as High Voltage, Low Voltage

Wind Energy - New Texas Gold?

We've heard a lot about the environmental benefits of wind energy. In windy areas of the country, this untapped power source has the potential to produce a lot of electricity. But who else is benefiting? In Texas, a surprising number of oil companies are starting to get into wind. Here's a look at Texas's wind energy boom, and the increase in wind power that's happening in other states.

Texas oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens has begun to support the use of wind power in the Lone Star state and wind power projects are cropping up across the nation: there are wind farms starting to appear in the Midwest and in the Pacific northwest, General Electric has just secured a ten year, $1.5 billion contract for turbines and maintenance for a wind farm in Oregon. The reason for all this interest in wind? There's a lot of money to be made.

Currently, US residents import a little under seventy percent of their oil. That worries a lot of people who don't want the country to be reliant on foreign companies. This energy problem is becoming just as big a boost to wind energy enterprises as environmental concerns. Natural gas plans are also being proposed, either instead of wind power, or alongside it.

In some areas of Texas, it's possible to drive for nearly 150 miles and see turbines all over the place. While not everyone loves how wind turbines look, there are just as many who look at these structures and see a future where the US can be energy independent. In Nolan County, Texas there are 1,500 wind generators in operation (which is approximately $5 billion worth of renewable energy technology). In this county alone, more energy is generated per year using wind power than is produced in the entire state of California.

This isn't the only area of Texas which is experiencing a boom in wind power. The Rolling Plains near Abilene has 2,000 turbines in use; the Permian Basin area close to Midland and Odessa is home to 3,000 turbines with a generation capacity of 6,000 megawatts. Turbines are being built all over the state, with as many as four per day going up in some parts of Texas.

Wind power offers a renewable, clean alternative to natural gas and other fossil fuels as a means of producing electrical power. It produces no pollutants and with even oilmen like Pickens lining up alongside environmentalists to help reduce the environmental impact of energy production and reduce US dependence on foreign energy suppliers, it's a technology with a bright future. Alongside solar energy systems, wind energy has the potential to meet a large portion of the country's energy needs.

So can wind be the solution to our energy conundrums? Not everyone agrees on this, but this much is certain; wind power is already here and it is becoming more common every day.

While several of the other states who deregulated their power at the same time are now looking into adding some regulations to the way their power runs, Texas has never looked back, and in this state, retail and wholesale electricity are sure to remain competitive, while electricity wires and poles are still regulated. The truth of the matter is that the end of the utility monopolies has been an impressive boon to both businesses and consumers, and Texas lawmakers feel that the step has made the state as a whole stronger.

According to research economist M. Ray Perryman, Ph.D, the consumers, business and governments that have switched over providers have saved upwards of 815 million dollars over what they would have spent during the course of a single year. For instance, during 2002, the state itself spent about 20 billion dollars in electricity, while the state's five deregulated small town services areas and residential service areas only accounted for 12 billion dollars of that year's energy expenditure in the end.

Similarly, Dr. Perryman estimated that the deregulation put more than 11,000 jobs on the market at a time when the jobs were sorely needed. There are various green energy sources available such as solar, wind, wave, hydropower, and geothermal. These energy sources do not produce harmful by products or harm the environment. Results that are a 360 degrees difference from fossil fuels.

Fossil fuels release harmful carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Individually, a coal plant may not produce a large amount of carbon dioxide. Our world currently has 50,000 coal plants. Green sources have one advantage that fossil fuels cannot compete with. Green energy is renewable. We will NEVER run out of green energy. Sun's rays have hit the earth for millions of years. These rays have produced wind for millions of years. Utilizing green energy sources reduces America's dependence on fossil fuels.

If you think about it, many of us have taken these green energy sources for granted. If we do the right thing now, future generations will not have to face the mess that we could have handled on our own years before.

Talking will get us no where. News papers talk about what needs to change. People talk about how concerned they are. People even tie themselves to trees. While these actions are noble, they will not build windmills or erect solar panels. It is time we put our money where our mouth is.

When will we realize that we have the solution to environmental, political, and social problems. Green energy will produce a system of renewable energy that fossil fuels cannot. Wylfa B, Low Carbon Mega Power Generation on Anglesey

With concerns about global climate change high on the agenda, the proposed Wylfa B nuclear plant on Anglesey, Wales is a project that assumes major strategic importance. The UK Government has said new nuclear generation will play a significant role in its long term balanced energy policy and Wylfa will play its part in this strategy. The local island economy should receive a huge boost for years to come and given its diverse energy sources, the term "energy island" has been adopted.

With a nuclear plant, Wylfa A, already situated on the island, which has been generating electricity for around 30 years, Anglesey has the foundation for a strong local skills base. While the present plant could have an operational extension up to 2014, it would then have to close down and start decommissioning and site clearance. The North West headland on the island offers great seawater cooling access and a hard rock foundation with the land high enough above sea level so that flooding risks are minimal, and so it is suitable for new nuclear build.

With plans advancing for the new generation power plants, Wylfa B may be able to provide up to 5.3GW of low carbon generating capacity for the national grid, which will be a steady and predictable baseload supply. A joint venture between RWE Npower and E.On UK, the subsidiaries of the two German energy giants, called Horizon Nuclear power, will operate the Anglesey location together with a proposed reactor at Oldbury in Gloucestershire.

There island community is broadly supportive of this major initiative, particularly when it has the potential to create around 5,000 building and supply chain jobs during the construction phase, and then an estimated 900 posts once the new plant is generating power. A number of exhibitions and meetings have been held between the developer and local stakeholders with a view to looking at the environmental, ecological and social impact of projected increases in transport and industrial activity during construction.

During the UK Government's Strategic Site Assessment (SSA), a process to establish which locations were deemed suitable for new nuclear build, RWE Npower nominated Wylfa on Anglesey. The results announced by UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband saw the island location among ten sites to go forward under the draft Nuclear National Policy Statement, and local residents can have their say on this long term project. Objections about any site can be made to the Infrastructure Planning Commission, as long as they are not nuclear energy issues.

In addition to looking at places like Wylfa B, generic nuclear reactor technology must go through a very tough licensing process, having regard for engineering, design and health and safety elements of the project. From statements made by RWE Npower it appears that assessments have been made of AP1000 by Toshiba Westinghouse as well as Areva's EPR design. Anglesey may end up with 3 or 4 reactor units depending on which reactor design is chosen.

Dealing with the nuclear waste produced by the reactors is another area of public concern. This would be a challenge in any event given the legacy waste from the UK nuclear programme over 50 years. With the new reactor designs their lifespan in operation can be up to 60 years, so planning is essential. All developers of new nuclear plants in Britain must demonstrate that they have in place a sustainable, funded decommissioning plan (FDP), so that the taxpayer does not have to pay for the disposal and storage of waste.

Going forward the prospects look very exciting for Anglesey island and the regional economy of North West Wales, given the likely $3 billion input into the area from this major energy infrastructure project. There is also the possibility that Wylfa B will act as a catalyst for strengthening the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) base in the region, which should continue to attract high quality career opportunities for decades to come.
