A Basic Guide of The Home Wind Power Generator

By Ethan Oriley

The interest in providing power to our homes using sustainable methods is on the increase. Today, we have seen more and more people considering installing a home wind generator for this purpose. Luckily for them they have the choice of either building it themselves using a set of wind generator plans, buying a wind generator online, or to having it installed by a professional.

Typically you will find that the kinds of home wind power generators people have built to provide a further source of home energy will be made up of the following parts: a base, a shaft, a tower, a generator and the blades. In many cases the models of generators used for homes have plastic blades and once they rotate will begin to generate power for your home.

On average the speed at which the blades need to rotate in order to produce sufficient amounts of energy to power your home is about 9 - 12 miles per hour. Also when purchasing such a system to provide additional energy for one's home you need to calculate the size of it so you purchase the right generator. If you don't then it won't be able to create enough energy to power what you want it to.

What can this source of energy be used for?

In most cases people who install a home wind power generator will use it for the following reasons.

1. Power some or all electrical devices in your home. Most people can't afford to buy or build a system that can power everything in their home, but instead opt for a system that powers some of their key appliances. This alone can still reduce your electric bill by 30 - 50%. Plus, you can always install another system at a later date when your budget permits.

2. To generate energy to power the heating system in your home through the cold winter months.

What are the benefits of installing a home wind power generator system?

1. You may find that not only do you reduce but eliminate the amount you spend on an annual basis to your power company.

2. You don't have to be concerned when power outages occur as these systems have the ability to store up any residual energy in batteries which can then be used at a later time.

3. There is no need anymore for you to be 100% dependent on the utility company that supplies electricity to your home. If your anything like me, I hate being totally reliant on anyone or anything.

4. Of course, the biggest benefit is that this form of energy is environmentally friendly and you are not having any adverse affect on the environment surrounding you. In fact, you are helping to ensure that the environment remains green for much longer.

When thinking of installing a home wind power generator you need to check with your local planning authority to see what requirements need to be met. You may find that your system can only be up to a specific height and that you must install it so far away from your home and your neighbors homes.

Should you Repair or Replace your Boiler?

By Tal Potishman

UK homeowners frequently strive to run an energy efficient household. Energy efficiency is proven to save time, money and lend a helping hand to the environment. Even the government is showing concern. Building Regulations now contain set standards to which all heating and hot water systems must comply. The current state of the economy and rising prices provide additional incentive toward efficiency. Homeowners are finding it harder than ever to pay for all their bills.

The dramatic change in climate has increased the importance of attaining energy efficiency. As the number of natural disasters related to climate change increase, the number of concerned citizens also rises. Homeowners are often unsure what they can do. There are several easy changes to the home that can greatly improve its overall efficiency. Ensuring your home has high-efficiency heating and hot water systems is a good way to start. There are several options available to the concerned consumer.

High efficiency condensing technology is one option. When a homeowner is faced with the choice of either replacing or repairing their current system, they are often unsure what to do. If they are educated as to the pros and cons of their decision, the choice becomes much easier. Frequently, the homeowner depends on the installer for crucial decision-making advice. The installer is often the final factor in the process.

The high price of boilers and the required installation forces many consumers to choose repair over replacement. This poor decision can lead to future problems. While it is true that repairs lengthen the life of a boiler, they cannot improve its level of efficiency. A faulty appliance will only end up costing more in the end. The price of repair and the cost of running older boilers is often much higher than the cost of complete system replacement.

If costs don't persuade you then, maybe the impact your choice has on the environment will. Homes in the United Kingdom are responsible for 21% of all carbon dioxide produced. Heating and hot water systems make up 80% of that number. Energy efficiency lowers bills in addition to helping the UK attain its goal of decreasing carbon emissions by 2010. Heating and hot water makes up well over half the cost of a typical fuel bill. High efficiency boilers can cut bills by up to 30% and save the typical home 200 a year.

There are a number of UK companies the produce heating and hot water systems of various makes and models. Important features to look for include cast aluminium-silicon heat exchanger, brass waterset, efficient pump, and a concealed system connection that increases system performance. Installation can be made quick and easy with models that contain a centrally located telescopic flue kit with preformed connections and pre-fitted mains electrical lead. Drop-down controls and spacious interiors make servicing the system easy. Radio frequency, RF, controller versions and a variety of warranty plans are available for the consumer.

Home Made Power Plant Review - The Truth

By Tim McDonald

Introduction

We first thought we would battle to actually follow these diy energy plans, but once we got stuck into the Homemade Power Plant guide, the advice and instruction was great. Homemakers and home improvement fanatics will love this guide - we really had to learn as we went along, since customer support was quick but not that much help.

Likes

1: The best diagrams

Homemade Power Plant had, in our opinion, real quality drawings. The solar plans were well labeled, full-color, very much to scale and simple to follow. And they were actually large enough to see the important details.

2: Great free extras

The information on the maintaining the systems, and getting the legal aspects of the systems sorted out was comprehensive and useful. We particularly liked the strategies of saving power - they were so simple, yet most of us overlook them. And the best part is, these tips have already helped us save hundreds of dollars over the past 4 months.

3: Adds value to your home

Okay, this actually applies to any of the top 3 guides, but we thought it is worth mentioning. We had heard that installing renewable energy systems at home adds value to your property. So, we put this to the test by getting a valuation done before and after installation. The results were quite astonishing! With just 2 solar panel systems and 2 wind turbines our house had increased in value by almost $6,000. In fact, the valuer actually thought we had hired a professional to install our systems - but we didn't tell him that :)

The Negatives:

1 - Miscommunication with customer support

We did run into a few problems with customer support. We could not figure out the best way to wire up the solar power system. When we contacted support, they were not very helpful. They simply replied with something like, "It has all been explained in the guide". But our situation was unique and they never seemed to realize that. So we eventually worked it our ourselves.

Overall View:

With the best drawings, and helpful free advice, Homemade Power Plant was well written enough for someone with limited technical know-how to follow. The instructions were rather simple to understand, and though customer support could not help us, at least they replied relatively quickly.

Keep your home warm with These Efficient Heating Solutions

By Tal Potishman

Winter is almost here, are you prepared? It is important to ensure that your central heating system is up to par. An enjoyable holiday season is only possible if all parts of the system are operating properly. There are a few problems that can, and usually do, occur at the most inconvenient of times. Frost damage is a frequent occurrence that can harm both boilers and pipes.

In the past, the central heating system was set up so that the frost thermostat was placed near the boiler. It was responsible for turning on the boiler as the ambiance temperature dropped below the determined level and heat was needed. The thermostat also stopped the boiler when it detected the air temperature was at an appropriate level. Many times the thermostat detected heat leaking from the boiler or the pipes and immediately turned off the system to conserve energy.

In recent years, the boiler and nearby pipes have been insulated much better (thus effectively saving energy) that the frost thermostat can no longer effectively determine when the air temperature has reached the requested degree. This can prove to be problematic, as it may lead to overheating.

The pipe thermostat is one solution. The product is installed on the boiler return pipe. This thermostat detects changes in pipe temperature and prevents overheating by shutting off the system when necessary. There are several UK companies that sell the frost thermostat and low limit pipe thermostat together in one kit. These products allow you to adjust room temperature and provide frost protection for your boilers and pipes.

Set up and installation of the thermostats is easy and user friendly. Directions for installation and wiring arrive along with the product, all in one kit. Frost thermostats are commonly set to 5C and pipe thermostats are usually set to 25C. If you have additional exposed pipes (e.g in the garage), extra thermostats can be bought to secure your central heating system completely.

If the pipe thermostat fails to meet your needs, there are other solutions. A fully programmable room thermostat is one option. These devices can be installed in a number of locations throughout your home, usually in a living room or bedroom. Their job is to measure and monitor the temperature of the room. The thermostat can be set to change the room temperature several times a day, depending on the homeowner's needs. There are several kits that operate by means of radio signal, from the thermostat to the boiler. These Radio Frequency (RF) thermostats require no wiring, which makes them very easy to install.

However, it is important to note that a thermostat is not the only way to heat your home in the most effective way. Adjusting the zones where heat is distributed can be a big energy saver. Focus heat where most time is spent and allow rooms that are not frequently used to remain cooler. This simple change will impact the efficiency of your central heating system greatly and help you reduce your heating bills.

The Consequences Of Energy Deregulation!

By Jeremiah Bradshaw

The energy problems the majority of the world face today are multifaceted and complex. After trying the stagnant policies of energy regulation, much of Europe and the U.S. are rapidly changing to include the option of energy deregulation.

Since it has become more prevalent, energy deregulation has introduced the necessity of clients learning all of the language of the average energy insider. Without knowing this extended vocabulary there would be little possibility of any being able to, or willing to negotiate their own energy rates. It used to be that you really had no say in what your energy costs were, but now you have almost complete control over whom you pay and how much.

To get the lowest rate you can get today, you really have to know as much information as you can about energy. You have to know if you are contractually bound to your provider and the limitations of that contract as well any rights you may have to change those contracts. This may be a key factor in the event you need to adjust your contract to get a lower energy rate.

As always, there is a positive side. That is that you don't have to worry to much when you have a contracted rate that rates will increase because it will not affect you.

The advent of the energy broker is directly related to energy deregulation. Don't worry, it is nothing like dealing with your stock broker or a real estate broker. It is much more simple than that. Many people were unaware that they were already dealing with an energy broker and missed out on possibly negotiating with them to procure a cheaper rate for themselves.

Energy deregulation was intended to bring about innovation in how we create and utilize energy. Sort of like forcefully increasing your awareness through mandating an institutionalized complexity to the industry. Over the years, without this dynamism the energy market has stagnated and new developments have been put on the back burner. Add a little competition in there and people begin to think in ways that they hadn't previously to preserve their competitive edge, or develop one.

Types Of Energy To Save Our Planet

By Samantha Troutman

The following article presents the very latest information on the different types of energy. If you have a particular interest in the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy, then this informative article is required reading.

Solar energy is destined to be the next super star in the quest for renewable energy. On the surface solar energy appears to be the solution to our world's energy crisis, but what is not obvious is the dark side to solar energy. Solar energy hosting companies offer individual plans starting at only $9.95 per month ($119.40 per year.) For larger businesses, managed dedicated servers are also available. This compares to about $6.99/month for hosting that uses non-eco friendly energy sources. Solar Energy welcomes manuscripts presenting information not previously published in journals on any aspect of solar energy research, development, application, measurement or policy. The term "solar energy" in this context includes the indirect uses such as wind energy and biomass.

Solar energy and 'going green' are getting a lot of attention these days. Many people are talking about thin film solar cells, also called solar film. Solar energy health risks are seldom mentioned. That may be partially due to the limited use of this source of energy. Solar energy can be produced through photovoltaic cells or through direct use in solar thermal power plants. Photovoltaic cells are the popular solar panels that can be seen on many rooftops, or on outdoor lighting.

You may not consider everything you just read to be crucial information about the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy. But don't be surprised if you find yourself recalling and using this very information in the next few days.

Wind generators can be merged with the home solar panel system. Wind energy can help produce tones of megawatts of electricity. Every time employed at individual estates, it can help do away with conventional power sources. Thin-film solar has been a major focus of U.S. Silicon cells are easy to manufacture, dependable and efficient, but some researchers viewed them as inherently limited. Thin-film solar cells are cheaper than traditional solar panels, such as those made of polycrystalline silicon, but the yield is lower. However, the combination of these properties is promising according to the Thin-Film Future conference organized recently in Munich.

Solar energy facts for kids in New Zealand are considered unnecessary by some. When winter hovers over New Zealand, it may seem that day after day is cloudy and grey - especially in some parts of New Zealand. Solar energy offers high capacity energy during peak consumption hours, which for smouldering hot regions, offers a unique opportunity to offset power shortages.

But what happens to solar energy when the sun goes down? Solar energy cannot merely be explained by the use of Calculus, the mother of mathematics, but can be explained by logic. Imagine a huge thin, square plate-like surface on your house, with thousands of tiny lines coloured in orange-like colours called PV modules; all at the ready to receive the frequencies from the sun's rays.

You can't predict when knowing something extra about the different types of energy will come in handy. If you learned anything new about the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy in this article, you should file the article where you can find it again.

Copper - Plumbing and Heating

By Tal Potishman

Copper is a favourite metal among machinists, plumbers and other industrial professionals. This metal has been used for at least ten thousand years and historians believe that only iron and gold were used as functional metals before ancient peoples discovered copper. Copper's natural colour is red, though over time, with prolonged exposure to oxygen, copper can turn green.

Professionals in the plumbing and heating industries have been using copper for their pipes and for a number of the electrical devices that help operate the heating and plumbing systems the professionals create. While copper has been used commonly for almost a century, copper miners have recently begun raising the price of the metal out of fear that the world's available copper supply will not meet the demand.

Copper is most commonly used for water pipes though United Kingdom manufacturing professionals have also begun to use it for the transportation of natural gas. This metal is the standard by which other industrial materials are judged and there isn't a single building code that doesn't allow the metal to be used. This is a durable and strong metal and scientists believe that it also has elements that stifle the growth of bacteria on its surfaces while simultaneously protecting humans and larger creatures from germs and other harmful substances.

Copper has proven to be one of the most versatile materials in the domestic plumbing industry. This metal can carry natural gas and water and is non corrosive and resists deterioration. There are many UK based companies that are so sure of copper's strength that they offer fifty year warranties on all materials that make use of the metal.

In the UK, heating industry professionals have agreed that radiant heating systems are the best household heating systems that one can install in a house. Copper is the best material this underfloor heating. Copper pipes do not pose any risk of leakage or endangering the structural integrity of a home. UK homeowners have begun installing underfloor heating because it is the most efficient method of heating one's house and it is the most cost effective.

Copper has also had great success in air conditioners and refrigeration units because it distributes coolness as easily as it does warmth. Copper has done a great deal to lengthen the lifetime of cooling units as well as increasing the units' effectiveness.

Finally, copper has a reputation for being "green." The metal lasts for decades and easily recycled. Copper can also help people fight diseases while increasing their resistance to high cholesterol levels and coronary heart disease.

Legal Requirements for Landlords - Boiler Safety

By Tal Potishman

The law is very clear regarding the requirements from UK landlords when it talks about gas safety in a rented property. The law requires annual gas safety inspection to be undertaken by an approved CORGI registered engineer. According to the law, failure to comply with this requirement carries a fine of up to 5,000 and up to six months' imprisonment.

The law requires the landlord to ensure the following:

* Open flue gas appliances should not be located in the same room where people are sleeping, or a bathroom.

* Repair, service or installation work related to gas appliances should be carried out by a Corgi registered operative.

* All fixed or mobile gas appliances within the property are maintained and their safety is inspected at least once every twelve months. The inspection must be carried out by a CORGI certified engineer.

* All work carried out to any gas appliance within the property must be approved by a set of safety tests conducted by a Corgi approved operative.

*The tenants must have unrestricted access to all appropriate documentation for all gas appliances (such as manuals, safety notices, instructions and labels).

* The dates of safety inspections must be kept in a clear set of records (which should also include any defects identified and respective work done). Access should be given to the tenants to such records within 28 days of the safety inspection or prior to new tenants moving into the property.

Carbon monoxide poisoning is responsible for around 20 - 30 deaths in the UK every year. It is highly recommended that landlords install carbon monoxide detectors to protect the tenants. Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas that is the result of incomplete burning within the boiler, and is normally a result of poor boiler installation. The gas, which is a combination of a single molecule of carbon with a single molecule of oxygen, is very dangerous as it causes serious breathing difficulties, potentially leading to lethal consequences.

The legal guidelines for landlords are very demanding when it comes to ensuring all domestic boilers are checked and serviced annually. Large landlords and housing associations find it difficult to meet such statutory requirements mainly owing to the administrative and logistical complexity of arranging access for the Corgi engineer to each property.

Evidence shows that it is difficult for the Corgi engineer to gain access to the property in cases of large blocks of flats. During business hours, most flat are empty while their occupants are at work. It proved to be difficult to get people to stay at home to wait for the plumber to come and conduct the safety check. Tenants are reluctant to lose a day's pay in order to stay at home for the landlord to comply with the Regulation.

In certain cases, landlords have to arrange for an entry warrant if the tenant fails to cooperate and allow access for the gas engineer. In addition to the administrative complexity, this adds substantial costs to the cost of the gas safety check (up to 500 for police attendance and potential repair).

Putting Your Trash to Good Use

By John Kirzno

With the way people throw garbage out of their homes, it would seem that there's an endless supply of new resources that man has at his disposal. Everything we use and consume on a daily basis definitely comes from something natural. Do you really think we have a never ending fountain of resources at our fingertips?

Look around you. Have you ever stopped to wonder why the world seems to be so stricken with calamities? This is all caused by our own doing. We are continuing to enjoy all the luxuries in life without even considering looking back and seeing if our source is taking it well. All the flooding that affects countries world wide is caused by continuous deforestation. And where do these trees go? Look at what you're sitting on or perhaps the toothpick you're using. What do you use to light up your fireplace? Ever imagined where the paper you're writing on came from? These are not man-made resources. All of them were given to us by Mother Nature. Cutting trees may take just a few hours or even less but growing one takes years. While it is okay that we use them for our own advantage, it would be wise to give a little back to Mother Nature so that future generations would get to enjoy the same amenities we're enjoying now.

Not all trash that we throw out to the garbage is really junk. We only call it trash because we don't have any use for them anymore. You'd be surprised at what that junk could be turned into. Paper and all other fibrous products can be recycled to make new boxes, special paper products, wrappers and other things. The empty bottles that we throw away can be used to store other items. Drinking straws can be turned into bags and other decorative materials.

Why burn your trash if someone else can make something out of it. Not only is burning considered illegal in some places, but you're also adding to the air pollution problem that we're trying to help resolve. A lot of other people could benefit from the old, run-down clothes you have. Again, it may all seem to be junk to you but if it can be used by someone else or remade into something else, then we should think twice before we just simply dispose of it.

Patronize the use of recyclable things instead of just buying out of whim. Not only are you helping a good cause, you're also starting a habit that can very well prove to be your generation's life saver.

Is Alternative Energy Potent Enough?

By Adriana Noton

The future of the planet depends largely on our ability to tap into alternative energy resources and create successful and long term environmental solutions. There is no doubt that while there have been ample promises over the years the political and ethical debate that has caused progress to trickle instead of surge has the potential to be ongoing. With the planet creeping closer and closer to peril the continued need for championing is much appreciated.

One of the most aggressive issues is the potency of alternative energy. In other words, will it be powerful enough to ensure that power and energy are brought to all of those that need it, even when the demand is sky high. Air conditioners, the longer, darker nights of winter time, and the chronic high demands of industry can pose a threat to the consistency issues.

Geographical considerations also complicate the matter, as there are factors that can come into play that make the answer to biggest question obsolete from region to region. What might work in one area may very well not in another. Wind is plentiful along the ocean, at least until you reach June, July, and August. At this point there is the option for sun power yet many wonder how cost effective it would be to have dual services running from a single area of generation.

Of course, this is also a political issue as much as it is an environmental issue. While candidates are now starting to create platforms that include things like alternative energy sources, progress has been slowed for many reasons.

First, try finding two politicians that can agree on renewable or alternative power sources and their plan for execution. Second, there is a limited knowledge regarding the initial ability to support the power demand. In the early stages it may very well be a doubling up of power sources, one traditional and one alternative, in order to test the systems and make sure that everything is moving forward without massive hiccups.

Some suggest giving the power to the people, literally. If each household became eligible for a significant tax credit for taking themselves off the power grid then eventually the government could start to mandate that consumers become responsible for making their own electricity through alternative energy resources. The biggest flaw with this issue is that it leaves the renters of the world without much power to stay safe and get clean.

Despite the slow progress it is important to note that there are dedicated champions for alternative consumption and that the necessary changes are right around the corner. With increasing technological advancements and serious drive, a balanced science that supports and protects nature is in the works.

The new and improved floating wind turbine is a perfect example of the progress and the direction we are heading. This wind turbine is now aptly making itself useful by connecting to the power grid. It is hoped that by studying these improvements we can all look forward to life saving alternative energy that can produce the necessary power for humanity.

Why You Need Solar Panels For Your Home

By Joey Brown

There is only so much the world can handle. Having had its fill of abuse by combustions, the world is putting its foot down and telling you she's going to die if you don't go solar and get some solar panels for your home. Maybe you should do that now; perhaps you should get your own solar panel already before they shut down the national grid. Because they actually will one day, you know.

You are simply as successful as the future you are able to envision and plan for. Here I am asking you to become a solar panel technician. Pay attention; with the planet going frenetic over the global warming scare, everyone will soon be buying the things and solar panels for sale will be everywhere!

You need to do your bit with what the planet has become today. You might not be a rich person, but in any way that you can, you should lower your energy consumption and maybe switch to other sources. Might I suggest solar panels for your home? It's not like I would be the first to anyway. The idea has been popping up for ages, since someone realized that fossil fuels were actually poisoning and killing this world.

Put it outside where it can get a lot of sunshine, and the solar panels for your home can power you indefinitely. The only parts of the globe that have trouble with the thing are areas that naturally don't get a lot of sunshine. In those areas, I suppose they will have to stay with old methods or create some new ones of their own.

It is a big investment, learning residential solar electricity and solar panel installation and then getting a solar panel to power everything that you own. However it is a very good one because you never again have to worry about bills. So if you can afford it now, do it now. Very soon, the world will begin to scramble for it, and then you know that the laws of economics will kick in very quickly. You suddenly have higher prices because the quantity demanded is higher too.

Good thing you are here and good thing you are reading this. Let it be my contribution to global advancement: you need solar panels for your home. We need to heal this earth. The whole planet has known it for ages, but they are just taking action. That action has got to be rapid so that the damage we have done already to this world does not catch up to us.

If you have access to a government grant, you might want to use it as they direct to get solar panels for your home. We are looking at a worldwide crisis in which things will likely get worse before they get better. But you can be a factor in your own little way. Get a solar panel, have it installed, and get to generating the solar electricity that you use in your home and in your office.

The earth is slowly being poisoned to death by gas emissions. As much as we would all love for this to change, too many processes depend on them for it to be done too suddenly. However, if we could introduce solar panels for your home little by little to take over, we might pull it off yet. And the apocalypse that the planet so greatly dreads might never actually come.

Sure, the cost of a solar panel today might be on the high side, but you can begin saving up. I know that prices will likely go down soon anyway. Interestingly enough, I do not think that day is all so far away anymore. And then you can buy solar panels for your home and start to help this planet heal from greenhouse gas poisoning. It is going to happen sooner than you expect, you'll see.

Opportunities In The Specialist Radiator Market

By Tal Potishman

Many installers will be feeling concerned about the economic climate affecting their work. However, it is best to not get put off by the pressures being faced in this current climate. As the period is fairly uncertain it is not advisable just to 'wait it out'. There are opportunities for business out there. It is just about spotting them.

Unfortunately many installers fail to recognise these opportunities that come to them and take advantage. One particular area is the radiator market. This area of the market has grown in popularity over a period of time and there are many products available.

As the local government has continued to make investments in social housing and public building works, such as healthcare and education, this has led to an increased demand in specialist heating products which can cater for these specific areas.

Furthermore, many homeowners who were previously contemplating moving home are now improving their homes instead. This has led to increased demand for designer radiators and products which offer great design and high performance.

Many consumers are also concerned about cost-cutting, so they are looking at strategic ways to reduce their fuel bills. They see having an efficient heating system as a great way to cost-cut. Therefore consumers are increasingly finding ways to reduce fuel costs without having to invest greatly in thermostatic radiator valves and a high efficiency boiler.

If the installer can successfully assess the customer's individual situation and advise them on the whole range of options available to them, then the installer will definitely be on the right track for their business.

Many customers will have fairly drab looking radiators in their homes. Therefore they would be looking for the opportunity to give their radiators a makeover as they recognise that the radiator does not just have to be a practical item in the house to be hidden away. It can also be seen as a decorative item in itself, and as an installer, you can help see the customer this point of view.

Provide your consumer with a wide range of options. Tell them that you can have double-panelled radiators, single-panelled or one which is clear glass. The variety of styles and designs you can choose from are endless.

Just like radiators, towel warmers also come in a wide range of models that are not just limited to wall-fixed models. There are also many floor stand designs available, which allows for greater flexibility in your home design, and making your bathroom very stylish.

Rather than just being a dreary piece of appliance in your house, the radiator has the capacity to be just as stylish and trendy as any decorative piece in the house. As an installer, if you inform the customer of all these choices and knowledgeably recommend a product, you will be able to keep your business in check.

Opportunities In The Specialist Radiator Market

By Tal Potishman

Under our current economic climate, it is fair to say that the heating industry has been suffering as of late. However, installers should not be discouraged by this and give in to the economic pressures. Nor should they just wait it out until the situation stabilises more. There are actually numerous opportunities for installers to get stuck into good business.

The real challenge facing installers at the moment is to recognise these opportunities and taking advantage of them. One particular opportunity is the radiator market. There have been many products available in this market that have also increased in popularity over time due to a number of reasons.

The local government has been keen to make investments in social housing and public building works, such as education and healthcare, and as a result this has led to increased demand in specialist heating products which are designed to cater for these areas.

It is up to the installer to assess the consumer's individual circumstances, and to advise them appropriately according to that. It is best to provide the consumer with as many options as possible. This may lead to a better result for the installer at the end.

Radiators are often seen as drab looking accessories in the home. A chance to give their radiator a makeover will be a surprising thought to many but not one that will be dismissed. The installer can help the customer recognise that the radiator can be a stylish item to have in the home.

As an installer you should inform the customer about the wide choice they have available. You can have double-panelled radiators, single-panelled or one which is clear glass. Therefore it is possible to have a nice looking radiator even before you turn on the heating.

Towel warmers, just like radiators, do not have to be limited to wall-fixed models.

DIY Home Power

By Mike Richter

Have you ever really thought about how ridiculous it is that we have a huge system that costs billions of dollars to give us electricity, when we have all the electricity we could ever need falling around us all the time? Imagine if we started to take a fraction of it. Everybody has heard of solar panels, but few people realize just how cheap and easy it can be to create 100% clean, free, renewable energy all the time. My neighbors just last week built a set of RV solar panel just last.

Unfortunately, most people never get past the price tag when they look at home systems. That's because professional companies have realized they can charge a fortune because of all the money they save homeowners. It can cost more than $25,000 to install solar panels on your home. Fortunately for you, it's entirely possible to build your own system. You're only four steps away:

1. Find an instruction manual. Seriously, just spend fifty bucks for quality instruction. It will be worth thousands to you in the future. With the amount of heartache and wasted time you save, this is one investment that will easily pay for itself. Stay away from YouTube instructional videos, those people don't know what they're talking about.

2. Order the solar cells online. A solar cell is the main component of the panel, the surface which actually converts light into electricity. It's possible to make these yourself, but that's more of a science project than something which is going to be a reliable power source. Solar Cells are widely available, and cost less than $100 each.

3. Take a trip to the hardware store. Everything else you need is going to cost you around $30 per panel. Some people suggest that it will cost even less. Your manual should have detailed instructions on specifically what you need. You'll also have to pick up the electronics you need to convert your energy into standard 120V AC power.

4. Have a barn raising! Call your friends, neighbors, and kids and make a family weekend project out of it. Everybody who hears what you're up to will want to come check it out. Use all that help to get your system ready to go!

So there you have it. It's actually very easy and affordable to build your own solar panals. Now it's time to get of the web and get it done. You'll be saving money on your bills and helping the earth in no time.

Solar Electricity - A Perfect Solution For Home Owners - It Will Help Cut Your Bills!

By Kiera McNeil

Solar electricity is most ideally suited to providing peak load power due to heavy use of air conditioners on hot, sunny days during the summer. In that peak load application, solar will compete mostly with the internal combustion turbine, which is the most expensive source of electricity now in use. Solar electricity is now a mainstream choice for home improvement because photovoltaic costs have been driven down in recent years, leading to increased savings. As electricity rates continue to rise faster than inflation, maintaining the status quo translates into increased expense with no return. Solar electricity is made by converting sunshine into an electric current which is converted into AC electricity and used in your home or business.

Solar electricity is one of the most prominent alternative sources of energy. Many countries have been toying with the idea of its development. Solar energy is power from the sun's rays that reaches the earth. Using photovoltaic cells made from silicon alloys, sunlight can be converted into other forms of energy, such as heat and electricity. Solar energy is also becoming very popular with island nations. Perhaps the biggest advantage of solar energy is that it allows people to be independent of power companies, because it allows them to be self sufficient.

It is somewhat strange that most of us shy away from installing solar power solutions at home thinking them to be expensive and cumbersome. You will, however, be surprised to know how easy it is to employ these power solutions. Moreover, these will help cut down your power bills. You will probably be delighted to know tat you are doing your bit to save power for the future generations.

Let's explore a few solar power options already available for home use.

The domestic solar cooker is increasingly in demand because of its being completely pollution free. We are engaged in offering a range of domestic solar cookers, which cooks food with the help of solar energy. The main problem with the panel solar cooker is that it has a small food capacity. Larger families must use more than one panel cooker to cook their meals. Thus, from an energy perspective, a solar cooker is most likely to use more energy to make than it will really produce. If you do make one for fun and education then make one with a group of friends.

With current design changes, the cost of hybrid solar lighting is expected to fall by more than 50 percent in the next two years. When that happens, going green with fibre-coupled sunlight will be within reach of a lot more consumers. Today, solar lighting is being preferred more than the common lights that have been used in past. People today know better than to buy cheap electric-powered lights and succumb to high electricity bills. One thing you should know about solar lighting is that the light that is emitted is not as bright as other forms of outdoor landscape lighting. Whether or not you consider this a disadvantage will probably depend on your individual taste.

It is the marriage of residential solar heating and traditional heating system components that make residential solar heating so cost-effective .and popular.. Installing a solar heating system in your home is easy and will help cutting down your electricity bill. You will be pleased to know, solar heating systems are aesthetically-pleasing. As per as expenditure, investing in a solar heating system is calculated to break even in three to four years. Thereafter... your heating energy is free!

Solar energy is the future. One of the biggest advantages of solar energy is that it is renewable, since it takes advantage of an endless supply of energy in the form of the sun. It is also non-polluting during the generation phrase, although the production of solar cells and infrastructure can generate some pollution. Once installed, however, these cells do not pollute, and they are free to use. In fact, in regions where people can feed excess power back into the electrical grid, having solar panels can actually generate money.

Aluminium Creating a Bang in the Heating Industry

By Tal Potishman

About eight percent of the Earth's crust is made up of aluminium. Aluminium is found in everything from the average beverage can to mechanical parts for aeroplanes. It is also becoming prevalent in the heating industry mainly since it is lightweight, flexible and conductive. In recent years many players in the heating industry have been experimenting with using aluminium for radiators and other parts.

The Romans and Greeks were the first to use aluminium, using effectively an aluminium salt for dyeing. However, the pure form of aluminium was first found at the end of the eighteenth century. The pure form of the metal can be very hard to find but in spite of its elusiveness, many industries began implementing aluminium with some regularity by the beginning of the nineteenth century, growing substantially in the twentieth century.

In present times, aluminium is found in packaging, jewellery and even industrial mechanical parts. One of the important drivers of the metal's popularity is its resistance to corrosion. This corrosion resistance makes it one of the best candidates for repeated recycling. Its light weight and pliable nature also make it a perfect for many uses over many years of recycling and reforming.

In recent years, many heating industry experts have been experimenting with aluminium for the various parts that make up heating and cooling mechanisms. Heating coils are one of the more popular products that have been made with aluminium. Copper tubes have been replaced with aluminium tubes with increasing frequency.

Some heating equipment manufacturers have begun making radiators and heating kits out of aluminium. Lately consumers have taken to buying aluminium radiators because the aluminium kits offer faster heating cycles with much less wear and tear to the mechanism itself. If something goes awry with an aluminium radiator, the individual parts can be fixed or refitted quickly due to the aluminium's pliable nature.

In addition to aluminium radiators, people aluminium windows have grown in popularity as they help lower the cost of heating and cooling as well. Windows made of aluminium prevent the temperature of a room from fluctuating with the outside temperatures. Most users who choose aluminium windows have reported that their heating and cooling costs have dropped dramatically since having the windows installed. Aluminium can also be used for refrigeration coils, the ventilation grilles of the floor panels and lining ventilation ducts with aluminium foil.

Aluminium is one of the most versatile materials found within the earth's crust. Because there is so much of it and the fact that it is highly versatile, aluminium can be used by almost every industry. The heating industry has proven that aluminium can be used for just about anything and they have gone to great lengths to implement this versatile material.

The Disappearance of Utility Monopolies in Pennsylvania

By Jerry Dyess

Being exposed to corporate monopolies, especially when it comes to your personal or small business life, can cause all types of unnecessary problems. When a company can design and implement changing policies and you have no choice but to submit, you can never win. Competition drives our society to stay fair and balanced, something monopolies cannot offer.

Utility monopolies remain a problem for many states, but that hasn't been true for Pennsylvania since'96. In'96, Pennsylvania took steps to take care of this problem. In other words, Pennsylvania's electricity market was deregulated, which meant that competition could come in, and service became paramount for many electric providers in every region.

It was soon recognized elsewhere that electricity deregulation was a positive development for consumers, and so, the FCC, the Federal Communications Commission, issued orders to include the local telephone market in deregulation as well. Natural gas customers benefited from deregulation as of November 1,'99. Then, consumers began to have their free choice of utilities as well.

For each utility category in Pennsylvania, consumers get approximately 10 companies choose from, to provide their services. All service providers make low rates a priority, and this is probably the most important benefit they give to consumers. Service is a close second, such that customers are assured outages are going to be taking care of as quickly as possible. Customers' good ratings and referrals then increase companies' chances for more business.

Although utility companies can offer incentives to attract customers when there is competition, and they can provide industry knowledge that's been updated, watch out for "free gift" perks. These aren't necessarily bad, but remember that nothing is really free. Before you sign up for any agreement with a provider, read the fine print and make sure you understand it.

If you do ever feel that you've been scammed, or if you feel that you've been "crammed," where you're charged additional charges without your consent or knowledge, make sure you contact the Office of Consumer Advocate. This office was set up by the Pennsylvania General assembly in'76, and gives consumers the leverage to demand fair and just service from those who provide utilities.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission stands for balance between the needs of the consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable service. With the public in mind, they also seek to further economic development by educating the public on making good, sound choices when choosing utility companies.

In a world where corporate monopolies can be unjustified in their procedures and policies, your complaints can fall on deaf ears. After all, where are you going to go? Pennsylvania had the insight to see the state heading in this unpopular direction and made the decision to give everyone a choice. Now, several utility companies, customers, along with the Public Utility Commission are all working together to provide the best service possible at an affordable cost.

Electricity Deregulation In New York Is A Positive For Businesses

By Jerry Dyess

Right now, many businesses are making their exit from the State of New York because of the rising energy prices. By deregulating electricity, businesses will have a reason to stay, as well as aid in the growth of the economy.

This all started with power companies being given a territory upon which they could do essentially whatever they wanted. They would run their lines and provide power. These territories were overseen by the state and not the federal government. These companies were responsible for maintenance and hookups.

Much of the generation of electrical power was done either using local hydropower resources (such as that in the Niagara Falls area), by the burning of fossil fuels like coal, or through the use of a nuclear plane (like the Ginnea plant in the Rochester area). The downside to this process was that the costs to generate electricity to customers could vary significantly from area to area, so the customer was more or less held captive by the prices charged by their local utility. For the most part, consumers had no other choice than to hook up and pay these rates or do without.

The Public Service Commission was the one that oversaw all of the power company's actions, but many though that they didn't do enough. Some went as far as to claim that the power company actually supported the ridiculous power prices. Businesses left the state in hopes of finding better prices.

Now deregulation moves in New York State have provided new opportunities for businesses all over the state, as customers are not limited to a single power company in that territory. Businesses can go to different power companies and even find a lower price if they want. This will cut costs, and they can even use an out of state supplier if they deem it necessary.

It should be noted here that a consumer's electricity bill is divided into two parts: one for the maintenance of the wires and connections to the business or home, and the other for the delivery and actual cost per kilowatt hour. While the charges for the delivery might reflect a savings due to lower charges from a given supplier, the maintenance charge will always be set by the local utility that "owns" the delivery wires and will remain the same, no matter who the power supplier is.

With deregulation in place, the individual business is now free to shop for a supplier of electricity based on rates that are more competitive, no matter where that supplier may be located. Marketplace competition provides the healthy incentive for power utilities to adopt more cost effective ways to generate energy as well as to bring pricing under better control to successfully compete for the consumer's energy dollar. In addition, since the location of power suppliers can now cross state lines, consumers are afforded more stringent protection since Federal regulation and guidelines over the industry may be invoked.

Wind Energy- Is It Really Worth It? The Debate Is On

By Ben Tunk

Energy costs, like so many other things, continue to go up. This increase along with the desire to go green, has sparked renewed interest in using other forms of renewable energy. Many people are turning to wind energy as a way to lower their electric bills, but is it a practical option?

It really doesn't matter what topic you pick, there will always be some people who agree and some who disagree. And that's fine, as long as they discuss the facts and not just throw around their opinion and make it appear as though it's fact.

Using the wind to power turbines for home use is one such discussion. There are a lot of people on both sides of the subject, but you have to make up your own mind.

Here is a list of some of the pros and cons, you choose:

Pros

1. Building a turbine for your home is cheap and easy. 2. Using wind power is free of charge. 3. Wind power will not pollute. 4. Wind power is renewable and cost-effective.

Cons

1. Wind power isn't a constant. You won't have wind every day. 2. The technology, while improved, still isn't 100% efficient at converting the wind into energy and storing it. 3. A lot of people aren't going to want to construct their own turbines and buying one can be very expensive.

For the majority of people, I think the pros probably outweigh the cons. For a small investment you can save quite a bit on your utility bill, but the decision has to be yours.

As you can see there are good arguments for and against using wind energy to supply your electricity requirements. It's up to you to decide what is best for you, your home, and your lifestyle. I hope this list helps.

Solar Energy Facts: Using Wind Energy-You Can Build It At Home...Today

By Ben Tunk

Many people think that they can't use wind power for their home because they don't live on a farm or have a lot of land. The good news is that this is not true. Wind turbines come in several shapes and sizes. You can even put them on your roof.

So now that you recognize you don't have to miss out on a possibility to save money on your electric bill by building your own wind turbine, now what?

Now it's essential that you know a little about wind turbines and what you can expect and what you can't expect.

An easy description of how a turbine works is that it takes the energy of the wind, converts it to electricity, and stores the electricity to use at a later time.

A small turbine will clearly make less electricity than a large one. In order to produce enough electricity for an average home using a small yard sized, or roof sized, turbine you would need more than one. You would most likely need three or four.

A lot of people wouldn't want that many turbines on their roof or in their yard, your neighbors probably wouldn't love the idea either! But the good news is that while one small turbine won't make all the electricity you require it will produce enough to save you a substantial amount of money on your energy bill.

A number of people save upwards of 80%. Since the turbine is economical to build and with the savings you'll get it is still worth your while to build your own turbine even if it won't produce enough electricity to completely free you from your electric company.

Save cash and save the earth, all by using wind power. It isn't difficult to do and it can give you a real sense of contentment, not to mention a bigger wallet!

Instructions For Properly Using Your Home Solar Power Kit

By Shawn Washington

After just using one, home solar power kits to me seem pretty easy to follow. Anyone out there looking how to make solar panels, I would definitely recommend going with a home solar kit. My results, to me any ways, were as good as a professional would have done at no where near the cost per panel or installation.

As far as installation goes it is really not that difficult. Have a solar build and install day with a few of your friends. You guys all get together build and install a complete solar power system in one of your houses. As long as you get one of the top home solar power kits out there you can all share. The next weekend you go over to the next persons house and build their solar power system.

What is the cost? You can build yourself a descent solar panel for around $200.00. You will find that most home solar power kits come with good instructions and a list of the materials you will need to create your solar powered system. You can find both the materials and tools at most any common hardware store at a very affordable price. You may also want to look into using used solar panels and then just going and installing them for yourself. You can find people selling used panels right on Ebay. Causes Of Land Pollution And Recycling Facts

By Margarita Sigmon

Have you ever wondered if what you know about the causes of land pollution is accurate? Consider the following paragraphs and compare what you know to the latest info on the facts about solar energy.

Solar energy is a general term for the electro-magnetic radiation emitted by the sun. We can capture and convert solar radiation into useful forms of energy, such as heat and electricity, using the latest solar panel technologies. Solar energy presents a very attractive option to solar power numerous devices ranging from watches and calculators to homes and boats. This source of renewable energy can be effectively used for electricity production, chemical processes and heating or cooling. Solar energy is derived ultimately from the sun. It can be divided into direct and indirect categories.

Solar energy's potential is off the charts. The sun's energy, known as solar radiation, can be converted into various forms of power, such as electricity and solar-thermal (or heat). Solar energy technology is fairly new, and it has some downsides that have not been resolved yet. The cost of producing electricity via solar energy is 12 cents per kWh using solar thermal and 23 cents per kWh using PV cells, according to Gilbert Metcalf.

It seems like new information is discovered about something every day. And the topic of solar energy is no exception. Keep reading to get more fresh news about the causes of land pollution.

Wind forecasting played a significant role in enabling large-scale wind power penetration and we believe that forecasting PV production is less complex and will have similar results for enabling industry growth. Wind energy in Spain has now entered a dynamic phase where the serious challenges that arise when wind energy becomes one of the main energy supply technologies need to be met. Current policy direction signals how an intermittent power source can be integrated into the electricity market in significant quantities.

Windmills can also make power for your house by using the wind that turns a turbine to create power. The one problem with the windmills is that if there is no wind, the blades on the windmill won't turn to create the power you need. Wind energy is one of the most widely used alternatives to oil in the world.

Renewable energy provides more jobs per unit of output and per dollar spent than conventional energies do. Economic woes and high unemployment rates influenced Spain's 94 decision to invest in renewable energy. Renewable energy is no less reliable than energy generated from more traditional sources and using it does not mean that you have to change your lifestyle or your appliances. Using renewable energy can be as simple as using the sun for drying clothes or can mean taking advantage of more sophisticated renewable technologies, such as photovoltaic (PV) cell systems, which use the sun's heat and light to generate energy, wind turbines or ground source heat pumps which extract energy from underground. Renewable energy is important for the environment as it produces little or no greenhouse gases. The exception is biomass which is considered as being 'carbon neutral'.

So now you know a little bit about the causes of land pollution. Even if you don't know everything, you've done something worthwhile: you've expanded your knowledge.

How to Lower Your Carbon Footprint

By Jerry Dyess

The amount of carbon dioxide that each person produces year is mind blowing; just in the USA 15,000 pounds yearly is the average. This includes the carbon dioxide generated as the services or products we buy are made, the fuel use in work and play, the energy volume it takes in the homes. This number can be reduced and even done aways with through having a more carbon neutral lifestyle. Lessening the carbon footprint puts Texas closer to using clean energy resources.

Just by being more efficient energy users, Texans are able to help reduce what is considered the carbon footprint. This calls for people decreasing their use of energy, and they can do this and keep their current style of life. A few ideas on how to do this:

Changing to light bulbs and appliances that are more energy efficient. One can save as much as 100 pounds or more of carbon dioxide just by using light bulbs that are more energy efficient.

Reducing the amount of hot water used. People can invest in efficient on demand hot water heaters, low flow shower heads and wash clothes in cold water. This reduces the carbon dioxide load by over 300 pounds.

Recycling saves about 2,500 pounds of the carbon dioxide. If the type of program is done, then start one.

Planting trees can reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by about one ton for each tree planted. The trees not only absorb carbon dioxide, they provide wind breaks to keep buildings warm in the winter and shade to keep them cooler in the hotter months.

Another way of achieving the objective of cleaner Texas energy resources includes changing to a renewable type of energy as in the wind power or solar power. Texas and the oil industry have always been thought of together. The state is starting to explore new sources of energy since the supply in fossil fuels is dwindling so much that since'72 Texas' oil production has decreased by 73%. Texas has enough clean and renewable energy resources, that can supply more than the sustainable energy that the fossil fuels supplied. This possibility for the clean energy for Texas is based around the geothermal, solar power, biomass, and wind renewable energy resources.

Wind power is known to be sustainable and very effective cost wise for a good Texas energy resource that is clean too. Texas is capable of producing a great enough quantity of wind power that they can be totally independent. Then the overflow from all of this could be sold to close by regions.

Texas' location is perfect for solar power generation. The state has many long sunny daysperfect for harvesting solar energy. Solar energy requires an investment but the returns make it worth it.

With fossil oil reserves diminishing, Texas has many wells that are abandoned. These can be refitted for geothermal energy production. This is just another way to move closer to cleaner Texas energy and away from the use of fossil fuel.

Biomass energy can be produced using the waste from landfill and agricultural use. Biodiesel is already being utilized as a power source for some of the vehicles in a few Texas cities, which has helped the carbon footprint of these cities.

Buying types of green power through city, government, or individual level will encourage the utilization of cleaner Texas energy forms. Texans can help this endeavor through building their own smaller units good for their homes or businesses. For solar and wind power projects the materials can be bought without much expense. Investments can be made by people to the companies the research, sell, and manufacture materials pertinent to cleaner energy.

Enterprise Carbon and Energy Management Systems Will See Widespread Adoption

By Daniel Stouffer

An organization may not trade effectively if it is not efficient from a productivity point of view. This is a core requirement and retains a great deal of attention on a day by day basis. Individual assets employed by the company are referenced according to productivity benchmarks as output is determined as satisfactory, accordingly. The stark reality that most are missing, however is that such assets are not necessarily energy efficient and this is becoming of critical importance.

In truth, energy efficiency is much more important than benchmarks asset production. In the larger scheme, it means little that the asset can produce X number of products, if as a consequence of its action it is producing an excess amounts of carbon emissions. Society wants to know that commercial productivity is totally efficient from an energy perspective, or there are likely to be consequences.

Organizations that do not adopt enterprise carbon and energy management systems to help them become ultimately efficient run the risk of failure. A competitive organization may seize the initiative and ensure that its assets are not only productive, but using the least amount of energy possible and consequently polluting less. This concept may have seemed totally alien even only a few years back, but the outcome may well be expected in short order.

Individual assets are rarely the focus of attention if they are performing adequately, but enterprise carbon and energy management systems are designed to track and record the energy performance as well. The net result is that the business is likely to be much more efficient and therefore competitive from a financial perspective, as these systems correlate all the information and enable management to be proactive rather than reactive.

Politicians are taking note of climate related issues and the American Clean Energy and Security Act is the first step within the US. It is not known whether the Act will be ultimately signed into law in its current format but it does include requirements for organizations to purchase and trade their rights to carbon as a consequence of their energy usage.

Performance related energy efficiency is the ultimate bottom line for a company. Enterprise carbon and energy management systems have determined this situation and rather than represent an additional burden or expense, can be seen as a very smart investment in the future.

Energy production and distribution systems across the country are old and are not able to keep up with demand as it is. Costs continue to rise and organizations face a difficult reality. The status quo will not be acceptable and new systems and processes must be adopted as they head toward the goal of sustainability.

An organization has many stakeholders and public opinion may yet represent one of the biggest pressures it will face. Society will expect an organization to have enterprise carbon and energy management systems at its disposal and will be looking for results at the risk of withholding support for the company.

Preventing Diabetes

By Crystal Wells

Diabetes is a disease that almost 24 million people in the U.S. have. Although about a quarter of these people do not know they have Diabetes. This disease is one where a person's body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that helps to covert starches and sugar into energy that is then used by the body. There are a few varieties to this disease which we will take a look at.

Diabetes Type 1

About 5-10% of people have Type 1 Diabetes, which is when the body does not produce insulin. To address this type of Diabetes the individual must take shots of insulin to help their bodies be able to convert starches, sugars and other foods into energy in the form the body needs it to be.

Diabetes Type 2

The majority of those who have Diabetes have Type 2 Diabetes. Interestingly, many of the people who have Type 2 Diabetes do not know it. With this type of Diabetes an individual's body does not create enough insulin or use the insulin created appropriately. These people must be cognizant of their sugar levels and focus on keeping them level through exercise and diet. There are also some medications that can assist.

Gestational Diabetes

This type of diabetes can happen during pregnancy in some woman. Often times this can cause the baby to gain weight quickly. After a pregnancy where gestational diabetes occurs 5-10% of woman will have diabetes after their pregnancy, usually Type 2 Diabetes.

Pre-Diabetes

There are about 57 million people in the US who have high blood sugar levels but not quite high enough to be considered Type 2 Diabetes. This condition would be considered pre-diabetes.

It is possible to prevent Type 2 Diabetes. This is good since most people who have Diabetes fall into this type. To reduce risks of Type 2 Diabetes you should focus on becoming more physically active as well as eating a balanced diet.

Losing weight and having a healthy balanced diet are two areas to focus to prevent Type 2 Diabetes. By losing 5-7% of your current body weight you will greatly be reducing your level of risk of becoming Type 2 Diabetic. Concentrate your diet on whole grains, fruits, vegetables and healthy fats. Also, you should reduce intake of refined carbohydrates, sugars and sugary drinks. Quit smoking if you currently smoke.

Will Using Wind Power Really Cut Your Energy Bills?

By Ben Tunk

I am not making light of the recession when I say that perhaps something good will come of it. I know a lot of families are struggling just to keep their head above water, and I feel terrible for them. But the truth is that we are all learning new ways, like using wind power, to save cash.

After the economy turns around, and it will sooner or later, we can all be doing great if we keep on using the money saving habits we began using when things were troublesome.

If you want to lower your utility bills at this time, and in the future, building your own wind turbine can help. It's a straightforward project you can probably do in a weekend.

A wind turbine is just a more high tech version of a wind mill except now we can convert the energy from the wind into electricity and store it for later use.

Turbines come in various sizes and shapes, you are not just stuck with a huge windmill in your backyard. As a matter of fact, a lot of them can be mounted directly on your roof. Two of my neighbors have only just added them.

You can definitely build your own turbine and it won't cost you more than a few hundred dollars. The parts, and instructions, are readily available online or off. You do not require any special skills or knowledge either.

One small turbine most likely won't generate all the energy your household needs on a daily basis, but it can cut your electric bill considerably. Many homeowners have seen a savings of over 75%.

Using wind power to save money on your electric bill is an easy, low-cost thing you can do beginning immediately. Make it your weekend project, build your own wind turbine and begin saving on your electric bills today.

Energy Conservation in the Home

By John Matthews

Reducing how much energy you consume in your household isn't just about saving money, it's about saving teh planet also. We should all try and reduce our carbon footprint to help make the world a better place for future generations. Below are some simple, yet effective tips on how you can conserve power and save money!

Tip 1 - Color of wall paint. Using dark interior wall paint actually absorbs more light. This means you have to use more lighting and energy to achieve the same effect. Using light colors will make the room naturally brighter - and more cheerful!

Tip 2 - Use more Energy Efficient Dishwashers. A dishwasher which is 90% full uses 4 units of electricity. However, if it is only 50% full it still uses 3 units of electricity. Therefore you should wait until your dishwasher is as full as possible before using it.

Tip 3 - Water Heater Insulation Blanket. Placing a Insulation Blanket on your water heater can save you around $40 a year. You can get Blankets for oil, gas and electric heaters which are relatively inexpensive.

Tip 4 - Energy Efficient Lighting. Replacing a single incandescent bulb with a low-energy fluorescent bulb will save you up to $50 over the lifetime of the bulb. If every home int he United States replaced one bulb with a fluorescent alternative, the energy saved would be enough to power 2.5 million homes!

Tip 5 - Reduce Heat loss through Windows. Up to 16% of household heating can be lost through unprotected windows. The heat loss can be reduced by closing drapes at night or installing insulating shutters. If you home has large windows which don't generally receive direct sunlight, try keeping the curtains/drapes over these windows closed as much as possible.

Tip 6 - Use Power Stripts. On average, 74% of electricity used by household applicances is consumed when the devices are switched "off". Using a power strip and turning it off when not in use can significantly reduce your eneery consumption.

Tip 7 - Choose Energy Efficient Washing Machines. When you're choosing your next washing machine, choose one which is front-loading. On average, front-loading washing machines use 25% less energy. Also selecting a cold/warm cycle instead of a warm/hot cycle can save 10 cents per load.

Tip 8 - Ditch the Dirty Heat and Air Conditioning Filters. Try to check your furnace and AC filters regulary. Cleaning or replacing filters once a month during high usage periods can help improve air-flow, promote better health and increase efficiency. You may also want to consider using a dust collector or air filtration system.

Tip 9 - Air Dry your Laundry when possible. Not only are clothes lines cheap, but they allow you to dry your clothes for free! In summer and spring months, drying your clothes on a line can save as much as $75 per year.

Tip 10 - Use Energy Efficient Thermostats. Don't pay for heating or electricity when you're not even using it. Programmable thermostats which switch off whilst you're at work, on vacation or even just asleep can help significant amounts

Smart Meters As A Way Of Cutting Energy In Homes

By Tal Potishman

According to recent reports, the government is estimating that every household in the UK will have a smart meter installed by 2020. The smart meters are used by the suppliers to record customer's gas and electricity use, and together with display device, they let consumers see how much energy they are using. This is greatly advantageous in the sense that homeowners do not need to stay at home for meter readings. It also stops people from getting over-estimated bills.

Some experts on energy and climate change have recognised that the meters we have in our homes were designed for different purposes, before the climate change. Nowadays consumers are increasingly recognising that they need to become smarter with their money.

The government's proposals for the smart meter

Consumers will be able to make reductions in their energy consumption with a smart meter installed in their homes. The smart meter will help them monitor their energy use and make the necessary adjustments. This is a huge project, one that will take time and affect millions of homes and businesses.

The government has set out some proposals as a way of rolling out the smart meters across the UK. The first one allows the energy suppliers to take all the responsibilities, which include the supply and installation, and the data management.

A second idea is that the energy suppliers take on the responsibility for the maintenance and installation of the meters. However, have a third part handle the energy data. This particular option is the government's favourite proposal.

A missed opportunity?

Some of the leading manufacturers of high efficiency boilers are happy with the government's proposals, however believe that the delay in enforcing them is a missed opportunity to encourage people to upgrade their heating systems. Current figures demonstrate that there are around 17 million standard boilers that are still being used across the country.

Some have claimed that making a device available for homeowners that allows them to monitor their energy usage can only be good, however delaying it will only result in a missed opportunity. There are environmental issues to consider, and using a standard efficiency boiler is environmentally unfriendly.

The smart meters are beneficial in allowing suppliers to record customer's gas and electricity usage, and letting consumers know how much energy they are consuming on a daily basis. It has been estimated that around 26 million electricity and and 22 million gas meters will need to be fitted at a cost of 7 billion.

It has been claimed that smart meters in every home will change the way households consume energy forever.

Some key features

Consumers will not have to deal with estimated bills any more as the information will be sent straight to the energy supplier

The displays are completely readable and easily understandable by houseowners

People will be able to closely monitor their energy consumption

Smart Meters - Will They Really Help?

By Jerry Dyess

You may have heard about the recent call for installing smart meters in our homes. These meters are advanced electrical meters that identify power consumption in greater detail than ordinary meters, and send that information back to the utility for billing and monitoring. But will they really help reduce power consumption? Let's take a look at what smart meters can and can't do for us.

Traditional power meters regulate only the energy consumed, and not when it was used, meaning that it's hard to match consumption with production. Smart meters are one of the more economical methods of measuring not only consumption, but times other information. This allows power companies to set different prices according to when the power is used. This will allow customers to save money by using power at nonpeak hours and avoiding paying too much for energy. It's hoped that this will keep electricity prices down.

Italy's dominant utility is currently serving over twenty-seven million customers with fully electronic smart meters capable of measuring and managing power, and which have a software controlled disconnect switch. They're solid state, and communicate via low voltage power lines. These systems offer more features to utilities, allowing remote changing of billing plans, the ability to detect outages and unauthorized use, and the ability to turn power on and off remotely.

With the implementation of smart meters well underway in countries such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands, and Scandinavia, it would appear as though it's only a matter of time before they are implemented in the United Kingdom. In America it would seem that there are currently only certain jurisdictions which are currently moving towards smart meter technology, but the trend does look set to continue, given that more and more homeowners now believe they should have the choice with regards to buying their electricity at times when the price is reduced. Likewise, many homeowners feel they should have a choice as to when they should sell excess electricity to the electricity company, should they have any excess power.

The biggest problem with smart meter technologies is generally communication, since each meter must be able to securely and reliably communicate the information to a central point. This can be tricky, given the range of locations and environments in which these meters are located. Some solutions that have been proposed include cellular networks, radio, and power line communications.

Recently, US President Obama has called for the installation of forty million smart meters, as well as three thousand miles of transmission lines. This would be the first real update to the electrical grid in about forty years. Some feel that this will create what is being called a "smart grid" and will be as big an influence on our society as the Internet, the Interstate, the telephone and the railroad. The ability of this grid to pull energy from clean power projects is one of the reasons it's being supported, as well as its ability to forstall the need for building new power production centers.

Smart meters can cost anywhere from a hundred to three hundred dollars to install - each. The amount depends on the quality of the smart meter in question, but it will be a significant investment. However, venture capitalists have been investing in this technology recently, so it may be possible. Soon, you could be choosing when you use power based on the price, and possibly saving money and energy.

Corporate Sustainability Challenges are Ahead

By Daniel Stouffer

For any organization that may have its head in the sand, significant problems are ahead. It seems clear that there will be legislation to address the issue and a potential "double whammy" of reputational harm to be avoided unless corporate sustainability is front and center. An excess use of energy, pollution of any kind and wastage of any form will be strictly taboo in the future. Every corporation must comply and be seen to be complying in the new era.

Senior management within the boardroom are responsible for the implementation of a corporate sustainability program. All members within the organization must adhere to these principles and not treat it as if it were a public relations gimmick. Across the board, every aspect of a business must be analyzed to ensure that it is contributing to the issue.

The issue of corporate sustainability landed fairly and squarely on the desks of every single federal agency boss recently, when Pres. Obama delivered a far-reaching executive order. This order is likely to mirror some of the consequences ahead for business organizations as more focus is placed in this area.

It is not advisable to issue a corporate sustainability report in a hurry or in any process or panic. The organization that does not take time to analyze and understand its position fully will open itself to claims of "greenwashing," as the information that it releases may be subsequently found to be inadequate or incorrect.

Carbon emissions can be broken down into three categories, also known as scopes. Scopes one and two will refer to emissions as a result of energy production and energy usage. These areas are fundamental to the majority of organizations and must be analyzed and reported as a primary consideration. The third scope is much more difficult to analyze as it relates to emissions produced as a result of supply processes, transportation, end use and waste disposal.

A full definition of an enterprise organization is known as a lifecycle analysis and is a required exercise before the company can embark on a program of corporate sustainability. Lifecycle analysis refers to a full understanding of every element of the operation with regard to energy use and resource usage.

A significant and positive byproduct of a corporate sustainability program is an enhanced understanding of the very cost of doing business in the first place. As each asset must be analyzed, its impact understood and its costs revealed, a better return on investment can be expected accordingly.

No longer is it sufficient for an organization to present its financial reports at the end of your alone. More so, the concept of "triple bottom line" reporting dictates that social and environmental considerations are also detailed and corporate sustainability data will be even more important.

How Large are Federal Agency Emissions?

By Daniel Stouffer

Critics of government action which would force corporate attention to focus on environmental change, point to the fact that the federal government does not lead by example. The burgeoning organization is often touted as the country's largest polluter and seems slow to accept its responsibilities and publish the size of its energy footprint.

Within the federal government, hundreds of individual divisions and departments operate largely independently of a central mandate. While many divisions interact with each other, there does not seem to be a central approach to resource usage and agency emissions go largely unchecked.

Much criticism has been leveled at the United States government over the years as it appeared to put corporate profits ahead of environmental sustainability. The government's position was that other countries needed to adopt a fair share of the problem or any measures to control carbon emissions would have a mute effect.

Pres. Barack Obama swept to power promising change, including the very thorny issue of sustainability. He fully realized that they have to lead by example and his first executive order focused on agency emissions, requiring each federal agency to work out the size of its carbon footprint and publish plans how to contain it.

It is certain that agency emissions are very substantial, although nobody appears to know the true size of the problem. Other major organizations around the world have stood up to the plate and revealed their responsibilities. Previous US administrations have not really address the problem, skirting around the issue, but the latest executive directive is quite clear.

Although the president did not set a specific goal for carbon reduction, he nevertheless made it clear that the position should be calculated and action taken. This will require agencies to scrutinize the performance of each of their assets, understanding all performance implications and raising a question as to whether they will in fact be able to control their own agency emissions.

Pres. Obama has set a 10 year deadline. He expects agency chiefs to come up with a plan to reduce emissions by a considerable margin within that time. It remains to be seen how these agencies calculate their existing emission inventories, let alone make plans that can be judged against efficiency.

Large organizations around the world now realize that they can eke out a competitive advantage if they take accountability for their energy use. If they can show the important stakeholders and consumers that they are truly "green" they can benefit from the positive feedback. As Congress debates legislation covering the overall issue, the federal government will have to learn how to control its own agency emissions.

Anglesey Island Seeks Advantages of Biomass for Green Electricity

By David Phillips

As an alternative form of energy, the advantages of biomass are several and not least for the reason that combustion does not add to the carbon cycle in the way that happens when unsustainable fossil fuels are burned. The world is under huge pressure to abate the rising levels of the major greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, given the contribution of this and other gases to potentially irreversible climate change.

As a material drawn from a broad range of organic sources, biomass fits the renewable energy category and can be deployed for generating power. Among the sources available are tree roots, branches, wood chips and shavings together with various agricultural wastes like crop residues, manure and silage. A biomass reactor can also be fuelled by specially grown grasses like miscanthus, switch grass and hemp or from trees like poplar and willow, or using wood pellet by-products.

One of the obvious advantages of biomass is reducing the need to burn fossil fuels to produce heat, steam and electricity in industrial, residential and farming settings. Biomass is also useful in that it has a relatively high availability with the option for continuous replanting and so by definition is renewable, when the carbon released by burning is drawn back during plant photosynthesis, hence the carbon neutrality of this energy source.

When biomass is taken from agricultural wastes such as straw and husks it is effectively a by-product and so it increases the value of the original agricultural crop. The subsequent replanting acts as a carbon sink for the carbon dioxide released during combustion, while at the same time releasing oxygen into the atmosphere.

There is growing pressure on using landfill sites to take municipal waste streams, and so sourcing biomass here will eventually see a reduction in waste volumes destined for these locations, which are responsible for releasing significant quantities of methane, a greenhouse gas with over twenty times the impact of CO2.

Among the advantages of biomass is the ability to use it in a way that has less intense environmental impact than when there is combustion. This means that instead of burning the biomass, a process which then has to be balanced by sufficient planting of trees to act as a carbon dioxide sink, the process of anaerobic digestion is used to convert the waste into gases which can be used to drive turbines.

Increased combustion efficiency can be achieved in transport vehicles by employing ethanol derived from biomass in a variety of new biofuel mixes, with the added benefit of being cleaner burning than the traditional longer chain carbon fossil fuels. Evidently biomass fuels have uses in producing heat and electricity as well as an alternative transport fuel to petroleum derivatives.

It seems governments across the world see the growth of new renewable energy plants as one way to address the twin challenges of energy security and climate change. A key consideration, however, is the need for a sufficient and steady level of baseload supply, as it is not enough to just provide extra capacity to meet peak demands. Sometimes the wind doesn't blow and the sun does not always shine, and the tides have to turn, all are periods when no electricity can be produced, while the advantages of biomass sources is that they do not have this constraint.

Types Of Energy: The Advantages And Disadvantages

By Billy Mobley

If you have even a passing interest in the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy, then you should take a look at the following information. This enlightening article presents some of the latest news on the different types of energy.

Solar energy has been used since prehistoric times, but in a most primitive manner. Before'70, some research and development was carried out in a few countries to exploit solar energy more efficiently, but most of this work remained mainly academic. Solar Energy Alliance has over twenty years of experience installing and selling renewable energy products. We are accredited installers under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme and as such can assure customers of a quality installation with the back-up of a complete customer after-care service. Solar energy technologies offer a clean, renewable and domestic energy source.

Solar energy is created at the core of the sun when hydrogen atoms are fused into helium by nuclear fusion (Figure 2). The core occupies an area from the sun's center to about a quarter of the star's radius. Solar energy use takes many forms nowadays. Solar panels are getting cheaper. Solar energy is as plentiful as daylight, as limitless as organic life itself, a fuel that comes free of charge and replenishes itself every time the earth rotates on its axis.

Photovoltaic cells are being increasingly used to tap into this huge resource and will play a key role in future sustainable energy systems. So far, solid-state junction devices, usually made of silicon, crystalline or amorphous, and profiting from the experience and material availability resulting from the semiconductor industry, have dominated photovoltaic solar energy converters. Photovoltaic system costs encompass both module and BOS costs. The module costs typically represents only 40-60% of total PV system costs.

Currently, there is a need for allocating increased resources in solar research. Compared to the old forms of depletable energy (coal, oil, nuclear), solar energy offers a clean renewable form of energy. Currently, these include long-term feed-in tariffs, government-issued investment subsidies, tax incentives and regenerative energy quotas. Put in a nutshell: CSP projects - parabolic trough plants in particular - have become bankable. Currently, prices of highly efficient solar cells can be above $1000, and some households may need more than one. This makes the initial installation of solar panels very costly.

Don't limit yourself by refusing to learn the details about the different types of energy. The more you know, the easier it will be to focus on what's important when it comes to the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy.

Wind Power- Is It The Right Alternative Energy Source For You?

By Ben Tunk

I believe we can all agree that the present recession stinks. It's been so hard on so many people. One good thing that seems to be coming out of it, though, is the fact that people are looking for ways to save money and cutting energy bills is one thing they are trying to do. Using wind power is a great place to start.

Harnessing the power of the wind requires the use of a wind turbine. These are specially designed to capture the wind, convert it to electricity, and store it.

Wind turbines don't have to be the huge fan looking things you see in the field. As a matter of fact, they come in a lot of different sizes and shapes.

A lot of people are making their own wind turbines and placing them on their roof or in their yard as a way to create some electricity for their own use and save some money on their utility bills.

You can without doubt do this as well. There are manuals available that will walk you through the process of building your own turbine, economically and without difficulty. Chances are you can build one for less than a couple of hundred dollars.

You do want to have realistic expectations nevertheless. One small turbine won't produce enough electricity to totally power most homes. It can provide some savings given that you won't have to buy quite as much electricity but unless you have very small electrical needs, or you build several turbines, you probably won't be able to completely un hook from your utility company.

By all means learn how to harness wind power for your household electrical requirements. It can be fun, rewarding, save you money, and save the earth. What a great combination!

Best Way To Make Your Own Wind Turbine

By Dan Donaldson

Every year the cost of energy increases dramatically. Most of us are surprised by our electricity bills when compared to just a few years ago. A lot of homeowners are looking for methods to reduce their energy costs. There are two ways to do this. You can either reduce the amount of energy that you consume or you can find a way to create a proportion of your energy needs through alternative sources. Many people now use wind turbines as these give free energy. It is not too difficult to make your own wind turbine.

If you decide to install a wind turbine then you will see great financial savings in your energy costs as well as helping to protect the environment. Many people now see wind turbines as a more productive means of alternative energy creation when compared to solar cells and panels. This is because wind turbines can produce electricity 24 hours a day. They do not even need a strong wind. Also, if you have a property that is in a remote location where it is not possible to connect to the national grid, then they are ideal. You can easily learn how to make your own wind turbine and harness household wind power to generate your own electricity.

To make your own wind turbine you will require some specific materials. These can often be purchased in your local hardware store or you can buy them through the internet. To put all the pieces together should take no longer than a weekend for an individual with experience of DIY.With a little skill and a few readily available materials, you can make your own wind turbine and start saving money on your electric bill before you know it.

The required parts include a motor, blades, a mounting, and a tower. The size of the turbine will depend upon your requirements. For most people a 30 volt motor will suffice. The blades can be created from a piece of PVC pipe cut to size or specialist blades can easily be purchased. Many people choose a metal pipe as a tower, this needs to be securely fastened to the ground.

It is also essential to have a controller that regulates the supply of energy to the batteries that will store the electricity. Otherwise you can easily damage the batteries. Since it is so simple and relatively inexpensive, ore and more homeowners are learning how to make their own wind turbine. It will help you to save money, reduce pollution and gain independence from the electric grid.

Whenever working with electricity you need to ensure that safety procedures are followed at all times. Any electrical device needs to be protected from water.

What You Need To Think About With Recycling

By Bobby Montgomery

Have you ever wondered if what recycling facts are accurate? Consider the following paragraphs and compare what you know to the latest info on how recycling affects the environment.

Recycling refers to the process of collecting used materials which is usually considered as waste and reprocessing them. In this process these used materials are sorted and processed to be used as raw materials for the production of new products. Recycling containers are becoming more commonplace as we realize that our ecosystem requires some TLC. There are several paths to a Greener Earth and recycling provides a doable and efficient (ten times energy savings) way to participate in the process. Recycling certificates can be automatically sent to so he knows the bulbs were indeed recycled.

Recycling is the process of turning used products into raw materials that can be used to make new products. Its purpose is to conserve natural resources and reduce pollution. Recycling waste paper not only saves natural resources, but also diverts tons of waste from landfills. Recycling creates much more roles than landfills do enough roles to make a gigantic difference in a little city. It adds to property worth.

The information about recycling facts here will do one of two things: either it will reinforce what you know about how recycling affects the environment or it will teach you something new. Both are good outcomes.

Recycling questions are important. Such questions include how good is the recycled product? Another question is how much the government spend on recycling all of these products? Recycling paper decreases the demand for virgin pulp and thus reduces the overall amount of air and water pollution associated with paper manufacture.

Recycled pulp can be bleached with the same chemicals used to bleach virgin pulp, but hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydrosulfite are the most common bleaching agents. Recycling centers and landfills across the country are preparing for a surge of unwanted sets in coming months. Next February, most TV broadcasts will be available only in digital form.

When new products are manufactured from virgin materials, the amount of energy consumed is much higher. Besides, the energy required to acquire and transport the virgin raw materials from their origins or natural sources is also saved. Now, you need not try hard over locating that mobile shop, giving you the right cash for your used and old mobile phone. With phone recyclers, you can situate the shop where you can buy and sell mobile phone round the clock, anywhere which can give you the best rates for your used hand phone! New engine oil made from recycled oil meets the standards used in the industry lubrication industry. According to the American Petroleum Institute, re-refined oil is of as high a quality as a virgin oil product.

Now might be a good time to write down the main recycling facts covered above. The act of putting it down on paper will help you remember what's important about how recycling affects the environment.

Renewing Alternative Energy For A Sustainable World

By Dale Green

We are blessed with so much sources of energy that we can use for our daily needs. There are also lots of alternative sources of energy provided for all of us and the whole earth. Renewable powers are present in all corners of the world but these are only used by those who cannot afford or where availability is scarce of the technology of mechanical electricity.

Whether we talk about the energy of the wind, solar power or the energy stored in the recesses of the earth, these are all inexhaustible. However, it is we who have to find a way to tap these energy sources and transform them into something that can be used. Shifting to these renewable sources of energy is the need of the hour with the rapidly dwindling sources of conventional energy such as the fossil fuel.

Harnessing alternative energy sources for energy is not that tough particularly if you have a look at the progress which has been made in trying to convert fossil fuels into petroleum and other such products by purifying and refining them. The entire procedure is an expensive and tough affair and naturally costs more millions!

Even though the idea of utilizing the alternative forms of energy may not be very familiar initially, we need to take this route in order to enhance our ecological environment, save our forests, reduce global warming and even ensure the maintenance of our modern standards of living.

Solar power is a renewable form of energy. Harnessing this form of energy involves buying apparatus which initially is more costly than harnessing the energy provided by the conventional fuels. However, we need to take this difference into our stride because this will happen when we make a change from conventional to non-conventional sources of energy. It's not practical to think that we can just switch to the renewable sources and just do away with all the conventional sources of energy overnight. The change will be expensive ad gradual.

From the time of Michael Faraday, the British Scientist who is known as the father of electricity in'00s till today, nothing is really changed as far electricity generation is concerned. Despite the fact that electrical energy can be generated in seven different ways, till today the transforming kinetic energy into electricity or the electromagnetic induction method still remains the most popular. Utilizing these new forms of energy will require a look at the fundamentals, re education of the basic principles and a lot of learning.

These days the technology using photovoltaic devices has seen some rapid progress. However, the basic issue with the photovoltaic solar panels is that they are naturally more expensive than the electricity generated from the conventional sources of energy. Nevertheless, now there is a 40% leap in the capacity in places like New Jersey, Germany, California and Japan. With the kind of progress that is happening, it is hoped that it won't be very long when solar power will be at par with petroleum in terms of the efficiency and the cost.

Creating or renewing the source of power or energy we have now is possible with different developments and researches. Whatever mistakes happened and committed in the past may be repeated once again, but the good thing is there are a lot of things that we can learn from them as new methods are being generated. It is good that children are now aware of the power and energy we get from the sun, wind, and earth through the help of educational programs. This will help each of us to be aware of how to protect our mother earth from being polluted by renewing alternative energy for the benefit of each mankind.

Enterprise Carbon and Energy Management Systems Help Achieve Corporate Sustainability

By Daniel Stouffer

You could argue that corporate decision-makers certainly earn their remuneration these days, as a business can face so many different challenges from so many different directions. Not only are competitive pressures unrelenting due to the downward economy, but costs are also rising, especially when it comes to the traditional sources of energy. The decision-makers could be forgiven for failing to hear the growing calls from environmentalists as sustainability becomes an issue of equal importance. Fully 80% of companies do not understand this or are not willing to take action, but this must change.

For an organization to be competitive in an economy that is impacted by carbon restrictions, it must first recognize the situation and consider the adoption of enterprise carbon and energy management systems. These systems enable the company to measure its initial carbon footprint, associated carbon inventories and take steps to deal with the issue.

No business can exist without using energy in one form or another and traditional energy emits carbon which damages our climate. As such a threat is seen as much larger than and more important than an individual organization's existence, senior management must view this position with great urgency. Politicians are likely to issue fines and significant regulations, but the public is likely to have sharper teeth when it comes to an organization that is willing to take no action.

If a company is not in possession of all the data, facts and figures associated with its operation, it may not be able to assess the size of its carbon footprint and act. To start off with, each individual asset must be scrutinized and its contribution to the problem determined. Enterprise carbon and energy management systems have been designed specifically for this purpose. When all the information is correlated together, management will be well placed to make educated decisions.

Corporate sustainability reports are now being required by senior management, yet many are still delegated to public relations departments. There are many watchdogs and consumer groups ready to pick apart such reports and woe betide the organization that is attempting to gloss over its position.

In the United Kingdom, Parliament has enacted benchmark legislation that will force the largest emitters of carbon to purchase allowances from the government. A "cap and trade" trading platform will be established, the net result of which is that an organization that is not in control of its processes will flounder.

In the United States, Pres. Obama is urging Congress to pass sweeping legislation of its own. In the interim, he has issued an executive order to force federal agencies to become sustainable. These agencies will employ enterprise carbon and energy management systems as they, for the first time, begin to understand their own positions.

The corporate sustainability report will likely become a mandatory document in the future. It will have equal or greater importance to the traditional financial and executive summaries. The report will detail the willingness of an organization's executives to take responsibility for the company's existence. This will be a quantum shift.

Solar Energy Facts: Winter's Coming Cut Energy Bills Now

By Ben Tunk

This year you don't have to dread winter, well at least you won't have to fear the high utility costs, there are numerous low-cost and simple steps you can take around your house that will help you cut energy bills.

The great thing is if you spend some time to make these changes the cost savings will last not only this winter but all year long and many years to come.

You actually do have a lot of choices. Your energy savings efforts can be as big or small as you want.

Here are some of the easiest yet most effective changes you can make today so that you'll be saving tomorrow:

1. The first thing you want to do is to check that your house is energy efficient. You do not want to let cold air in or warm air out. If your home doesn't have the proper amount of insulation or if you have leaky doors and windows you are wasting a lot of money.

There are a lot of inexpensive steps you can take to fix this problem. You can add insulation, caulk around windows and doors, and install window insulation kits.

2. Once you know your home is air-tight, it's time to make sure your furnace is running right. Have it inspected and repaired, if necessary. It's important to check that the furnace filters are clean so replace them every month during the winter.

3. Take your energy needs into your own hands, literally. Build some solar panels or a wind turbine for your home. They are small enough to mount on a rooftop yet they can produce up to half of the energy you need.

This can be simpler than you think, all you have to do is buy a manual that'll show you how to construct your solar panels or wind turbine, buy the parts, and invest some time putting it together and you're ready to go.

Don't freak out about your energy bills this winter. Just use one or all of these ideas and you can cut energy bills for many years to come no matter what the season.

Getting Those Advantages Of Solar Energy And Why You Should Switch Over

By Steve Schafer

Advantages of solar energy over the most used fuel resource - oil. Well there are many of them, but the biggest one will be how much better it is for the environment. So read on and find out what other reasons there are for you to consider changing to solar energy.

The sun is a renewable source; solar energy is going to be around for as long as the sun continues to shine. Yes it is true that at night you will not collect energy, and on cloudy days. But those days that it's shining brightly you are able to store up energy to use for those other times.

Oil that is used all the time is not a source that is renewable. Taking millions of years in the first place to form, once it's gone, you have to wait for that much time before you will be able to get it again. Since it's such a highly used substance the reserves are becoming depleted quickly.

With solar energy you will not be adding in pollution to the air. While on the other hand when you burn that oil for use it will create greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide that is released into the air. We all know the problems that are created by those gases. Plus the problems that arise when an oil spill happens it's extremely damaging.

Solar cells are something that requires very little maintenance and they are something that will last a long amount of time. It may cost you some money to first get set up with your solar panels and the other accessories that are needed. However, keep in mind that it's a onetime cost. Something that month to month will cost you very little money. The only time you will need to spend is when you have to fix something. Oil on the other hand is something that goes up quickly and all the time.

It's very simple to install anything like solar lights or other products that you need to go along with this. Some wiring and its simple even people who don't have electrical experience can do this.

Of course being good for the environment and the cost are the two biggest reasons why solar energy is much better than oil. Just remember that you may find ways that you can make your own solar panels and save money.

As you save on those bills you will be able to save up and switch over your full home to the use of solar power.

Protect the Environment and Protect Yourself

By Martin Troughton

Environment means the area in which you live. This can mean your house as well as the planet itself. When we talk about the planet, we are talking about the natural environment. More people are concerned about our natural environment every day. There is good reason for this, because we have not been concerned enough for a long time.

Most of us have heard the phrase that one should take only photos and leave only footprints when visiting a remote area in nature. However, the way humans have lived on this planet in recent years has far exceeded that advice. Long gone are the days when the Native Americans used to consider how their actions would affect the people who would come in seven generations.

For good or for ill, we affect the environment with everything that we put into it. All products that people use will be part of the environment in one way or another. For example, whatever is sprayed into the air becomes part of it. You may have noticed that respiratory illnesses such as asthma are on the rise everywhere.

All chemicals used, such as cleaning products, at some point find their ways into the ground and the water. And substances in the water and in the earth find their way into the food that we eat and, therefore, into us. This has become a repeating cycle in recent times. It is no wonder that many other health issues, including cancer, are on the rise as well.

When scientists first starting talking about the concept of global warming, it stirred a great deal of controversy. Now, however, it is being accepted more and more widely as being real. More scientists, as well as many leaders in the world, are giving this its due concern.

Individuals are also gaining greater awareness of environmental issues. Part of this is a concern for what can be done by each of us to keep those issues from worsening.

One thing we can all do is to stop using chemicals and purchase products that are natural instead. Fewer poisons in our homes will make us healthier. It will also result in fewer toxins entering the environment which will help the planet and everything on it.

Reduction in the use of fossil fuels can help to reduce pollution as well. One way to do this is to switch to solar power which is not just environmentally smart. After the initial investment, solar power will also help save money.

Waste reduction will also benefit the environment while saving you money. There are many examples of this but one is to start filtering your water at home. By filling your own bottles you will cut down on the plastic in the garbage and save yourself money on bottled water.

It will not be easy to stop being such a consumption based society. And it certainly will not happen overnight. But starting to make that switch will help our bank accounts as well as the health of us and the planet.

How Does New Solar Energy Technology Work?

By Hazel Aviles

This article explains a few things about the workings of solar energy, and if you're interested, then this is worth reading, because you can never tell what you don't know.

Solar energy panels are environmental friendly and produce no pollution while generating electricity. Solar energy is also used as a power for satellites in space and in space shuttles. The solar energy company's primary expertise lies with solar water heating. Solar water heating is the name given to the process where we use the power of the sun to heat up your hot water.

Many people are talking about thin film solar cells, also called solar film. Solar energy technologies still remain a costly alternative to the use of readily available fossil fuel technologies. As the price of solar panels decreases, we are likely to see an increase in the use of solar cells to generate electricity.

Most of this information comes straight from the solar energy pros. Careful reading to the end virtually guarantees that you'll know what they know.

Solar energy collectors located at the top will collect energy to be collected and recharged during the day time to be used at night. The power stored in the batter will probably run up to ten hours thanks to LED lights being integrated in to the system. Solar energy is renewable energy which is environmentally friendly, and it is free once the solar panels for electricity generation are in place, except for the cost to maintain and repair this equipment.

Solar energy is as plentiful as daylight, as limitless as organic life itself, a fuel that comes free of charge and replenishes itself every time the earth rotates on its axis. Almost all energy, after all, is ultimately stored solar power: Oil, gas, and coal were born of the ancient sunlight that fed prehistoric animals and plants, the wind is set howling by the sun's unequal heating of the atmosphere, and even a campfire draws its warmth from solar power trapped long ago through photosynthesis.

Solar energy is everywhere, it's abundant and we'll practically never run out. Even in mid winter we are blessed with a moderate amount of natural daylight provided courtesy of the sun. Solar energy can be used to power cars, boats, generators during emergencies, toys, security systems and even for your home. Simple "passive solar design" techniques reduce the need for mechanical heating and cooling. For example, south-facing windows and the use of heat-absorbing tile, concrete flooring, or other "thermal mass" can keep buildings warmer. They are simple and cheap to build - on grid or off grid.

Those who only know one or two facts about the workings of solar energy can be confused by misleading information. The best way to help those who are misled is to gently correct them with the truths you're learning here about the advantages and disadvantages of solar energy.

Why Solar Lights Make Sense

By James Thornton

If you've ever thought about landscaping your garden then you have probably thought about lighting it too. It seems pointless to do one without the other. The reason is largely due to the extra 'space' you get the moment you introduce lights to your garden. Once the lights have been installed you will likely find yourself spending more time in your garden at night, due to the beautiful ambiance created by the lighting. Why stare at black hole when you could be sitting and enjoying the evenings looking at your magical new environment?

Using solar lights to achieve this is a very real consideration. Conventional lighting can achieve the same effect, but the installation will be time consuming and costly. Solar lights have hardly any installation at all. There are many lights available that simply go in the ground via a stake on which the light sits at the top. Push the stake in the ground and you're done. All you have to do then is wait for the night and the lights will magically turn on. How easy is that?

The lights need not only be decorative, for many people utilize them for security purposes. You can hang flood lights by your doors, windows, or even illuminate an entire pathway. This acts as a huge deterrent to burglars. As a precaution, you may like to consider purchasing a solar light with a battery that acts as a backup in the event that they have collected enough sunlight throughout the day and don't produce the requisite amount of light for the entire evening. This is most important in the case of motion-activated lights for here they must work without fail.

In some ways the solar lights have been very popular for many, many years, but more recently there has been a huge curve of interest due to ever increasing energy charges. It seems pointless to go to all the trouble of installing complex wiring and paying quite large amounts of money to effect the installation and then finally to pay high energy charges when it's all done. Don't do it. Think about the alternative. The alternative is solar lights and they're a totally viable option. When you look at the cost, the installation, the ongoing charges, it really doesn't make sense to go down the conventional route.

Here, I have mainly been talking about solar lights light (forgive the pun) but many people are now installing solar panels for much of their energy supplies. Solar panels are something of a different proposition as they need to be carefully installed, but once again, after the initial purchase you will have zero running costs.

Solar Energy Facts: Saving Energy- It's Easy, And You Can Start Today

By Ben Tunk

Even though a lot of people do care about the environment, the recent economic downturn has forced us to focus more on our own financial survival than saving the planet. The good news is that you can do both at the same time. You can save the planet while saving energy!

There are a lot of ways to conserve resources, some are straightforward and trouble-free but don't do a lot while some others will make a bigger impact but can be costly and time consuming to execute.

You can use wind power and/or solar power to provide extra electricity to your home. While it would take quite a few turbines or solar panels to supply all the electricity needed, every little bit will help.

If you're not quite to the stage where you want to start installing turbines and solar panels, there are still some simple changes you can make starting today.

Here are a few easy to follow, simple to do, ideas:

1. Turn off lights and other electricity using appliances when not in use. Even on standby mode t.v's and DVD players use electricity. If you are not using them for extended periods of time, merely unplug them.

2. Make sure all filters in your furnace and air conditioners are clean. A dirty filter cuts down on efficiency considerably which means your unit will work harder and use more electricity.

3. Use nature as much as you can. When it's warm and there is a nice breeze, turn off your A.C. and open your windows. When it's cold outside allow as much sunlight into your home as possible by opening curtains during the day but be sure to keep them closed in the evening to keep the cold out. m

Also, make sure to keep that sunlight out in the hot summer months.

These tips are simple, and commonsense, but they will help you with saving energy and you can start today.

The Department Of Energy: What Does It Do?

By Jerry Dyess

The United States Department of Energy has many different duties. Among other things, it oversees national energy security, and economic advances for the United States, and it also helps to promote and support scientific and technological advances. Another of its duties is to help clean up nuclear waste and weapons.

It also helps to promote renewable energy source research and development, so as to improve the country's energy security. Those renewable energy resources include wind turbine, solar, hydroelectric, and geothermal. Bio diesel, fuel cell technologies, and electricity as fuel sources for cars are another of its focuses. The Department of Energy's mission is to make sure the development of these resources is done properly, ensuring at the same time that they are safe for the environment and consumers.

The DOE also has a big part in producing nuclear weapons, both domestically and abroad. Nuclear waste, too, is a focus with safe storage, from power plant nuclear waste and at produced by research facilities, as well as that produced from defense applications. They oversee reclaiming the sites that have been contaminated by nuclear weapons testing, or those contaminated by power plant disasters like those that happened at Chernobyl or Three Mile Island.

While not a public health agency, there are many activities that the DOE is involved with that impact the heath of both people and the environment. It examines energy sources, like different fossil fuels used, and analyzes their different emissions, such as the level of Sulfur oxides and other harmful pollutants emitted by power plants. They are also responsible for making sure these companies are living up to environmental standards, and penalize them with heavy fines or even shutting them down entirely if they don't comply.

When it comes to pollution, though, the DOE isn't just a policing agency. It also helps power companies with research and development so that they can improve emission qualities, whether by developing scrubbers that clean exhaust fans, or by developing renewable energy sources. They also help oversee power grid infrastructure upgrades, such as putting in more efficient to wiring, power poles, and transfer grids.

They do the same when it comes to automobile emissions as well, and make sure that manufactures develop cleaner more fuel efficient vehicles, for public and government uses. They also have a hand in overseeing mines to make sure they are using digging methods that are not only safe for the environment, but also are not contaminating water sources.

The Department of Energy controls the management and storage of nuclear weapons and waste, and will continue to do so both now and for future generations. It looks ahead to promote advancements and development of alternative energy sources, and makes sure that companies continue to provide cleaner and more renewable energy sources, so that the US' dependence on foreign oil imports is lessened.

For more information on the Department of Energy, what it does and what its goals are for the future, you can go to their official website; read about their involvement in a number of different areas, including preventing the development of weapons of mass destruction, managing operations, and cyber security.

What You Need To Know About Recycling

By Harry Muse

Have you ever wondered if what recycling facts are accurate? Consider the following paragraphs and compare what you know to the latest info on how recycling affects the environment.

Recycling is one of the best ways for individual like you and I to do our part to the betterment of our environment and world. Recycling is important to both the natural environment and us humans alike. Recycling is becoming more fashionable as people are taking the recycling business more seriously. The amount of household items that are discarded into the bins which can be easily recycled is enormous.

Plastics production also involves the use of potentially harmful chemicals, which are added as stabilisers or colorants. Many of these have not undergone environmental risk assessment and their impact on human health and the environment is currently uncertain. Plastic is a problem, and most people realise why. It is not going to go away: because natural processes will never be able to break it down.

By instituting a rigorous recycling programme, Wal-Mart is eliminating the need for the equivalent of 22,000 garbage trucks. Also, my gut feeling would be that in more equal societies people would care more for each other and the environment they share, but my gut feeling could be wrong. In any case, I would say that even with data support (which is all over The Spirit Level), there are contexts in which the analysis isn't fully (or at all) applicable.

In recent years, however, it has become increasingly common for customers to wait a while before recycling their old handsets, mainly because they hold greater amounts of important data that needs to be accessed even after switching models. Most users eventually decide to dispose of their mobile devices, though, so NTT is hoping they will make use of these recycling bins. LED lights use 80% less energy than the standard lights and last up to 10 times longer, which means they're a far better way to put some twinkle into your holiday season. They also tend to be a little sturdier than the old-school strands.

Now might be a good time to write down the main recycling tips covered above. The act of putting it down on paper will help you remember what's important about how recycling affects the environment.

Agency Emissions are Likely to Be Considerable

By Daniel Stouffer

It only seems fair that, if individual organizations are to be asked to reveal the size of their carbon footprint, that the federal government should be as well. This concept is now likely to become reality, as Pres. Obama's latest executive order calls for each department within the government to assess its position and reveal its agency emissions for the first time.

The US government is known to be the largest polluter in the country and individual agency emissions have never come under such detailed scrutiny as they must now face due to this new executive order. It is true to say that agencies do not comprehend the scale of their emission issues, as they have never been forced to account for their own greenhouse gas inventories before.

While the House of Representatives may have passed their own climate related Act during early 2009, it is not clear whether the Senate will act anytime soon regarding their own version. This has caused environmental advocates around the world to sharply criticize the US for recalcitrance. Obama's executive order goes some way to appease the critics, as agency emissions account for a very considerable part of the country's overall footprint.

Obama has said that the government must lead by example and he has clearly come out in favor of reducing reliance on traditional forms of energy and helping to initiate climate change. Rather than setting a given standard, he has asked each chief to assume the scale of agency emissions and to determine their own percentage reduction goal. Agencies must now understand their position and report back soon.

The federal government now faces challenges which are surely to be assumed by other organizations in the years ahead. Each organization must be aware of its entire operation, how each of its assets uses energy and consequently pollutes the environment. Such a comprehensive analysis is a challenge and must be conducted down to a micro-level, if it is to be effective.

Obama has dictated that agency emissions must be reduced by a yet to be determined amount over the next 10 years. There is no doubt that agencies will need to establish systems and solutions to help them become sustainable if they are to have any chance of conforming to the terms of the order.

Several major US agencies are responsible for issues related to climate change and environmental damage, but the majority of agencies and departments will no doubt have to take a crash course on energy reduction and sustainability.

While calling for agency emissions to be reduced and existing systems and assets to be optimized for efficiency, the executive order also calls for a majority of new projects and buildings to be sustainable, to ensure that future growth is contained.

Expect Federal Agency Sustainability to be a Difficult Issue

By Daniel Stouffer

While we tend to think of large industrial complexes, the fact is that the federal government is in fact the largest carbon emitter and user of energy. There are so many individual departments, hundreds of thousands of employees, vehicles and buildings it is surprising the issue of agency sustainability has not achieved more focus in the popular press.

Presidential executive orders are quite rare, although some have addressed environmental issues before. Never have we seen an EO more sharply focused on the issue of carbon emissions than Obama's most recent. He demands that each Federal department now fully understands its agency sustainability.

Within 90 days, agency senior management has to develop a concerted plan and return this information to the executive branch. They will need to determine the size of their emissions and also report their targets for reductions and how they are going to go about achieving this. It may seem straightforward on paper, but this will be one of the biggest challenges they have ever faced.

Within the private sector, large and distributed organizations have turned to individual companies that provide solutions and software products to help them address sustainability. These solutions focus on individual asset performance and correlate all this information to form the bigger picture.

Any major effort such as this is bound to have significant and meaningful knock on effects within communities around the country. The government is a very large employer and as employees are impacted by these measures they will undoubtedly start to widen the reach of sustainability policy and philosophy within the community at large.

The ultimate goal of an environmentalist should be to persuade each individual person to become "green." It is said that true change can only come from individual action, but as the federal government is responsible for so much intrusion into our lives on a daily basis, a widespread attempt to achieve agency sustainability may go a long way to achieving the goal.

Obama's executive order does not just focus on carbon emission reduction but also requires federal agencies to waste less, consider how they dispose of their waste and also take a good look at water resource usage. New federal buildings must also be ultimately sustainable.

No longer can critics call the US government inactive when it comes to environmental issues, as this executive order shows. We now await Congress as they debate legislation to cover private-sector emissions as well.

Are Smart Meters The Answer To Using Less Energy?

By Jerry Dyess

In all probability you will have heard talk of new smart meters being installed in homes, which have the ability to relay information back to the electrical company with regards to power consumption. Unlike the old regular meters, these new smart meters can identify power consumption in detail, and it is hoped that this may result in the average person using less electricity. Let's go ahead and take a look at what the smart meters really mean:

Unlike the old traditional meters which were only able to track the amount of energy consumed, the new smart meters will be able to measure not only how much electricity is being used, but also when it is used. It is hoped that this will allow electricity companies to set different rates according to the times when the most energy is being consumed and as such, it may help to encourage people to use electricity during off peak hours in order to take advantage of reduced rates.

These smart meters are already in use in numerous countries such Italy, where the main energy supplier currently provides electricity to more than 27 million customers, all of which have smart meters. These meters which communicate via low voltage power lines make it possible for the electric company to monitor usage and unauthorized usage. Electric companies are now also able to turn power either on or of remotely.

Due to the numerous benefits, smart meters are also currently being implemented in New Zealand, Australia, Scandinavia, Turkey, Canada, and the Netherlands. In the United States however, smart meters still tend to be restricted to only certain jurisdictions such as Los Angeles, northern California, and also some parts of Texas. As far as the United Kingdom and Ireland are concerned, it would seem that it's only a matter of time before smart meters become the norm. Essentially, it's become rather apparent that homeowners would like the opportunity to make their own choice with regards to buying power during times when the price is down, just as they would like to have a choice as to when they should sell any excess power they may have, back to the electric company.

Considering that a smart meter can cost from 100 to $300.00 to install, it is by all accounts a significant investment, but then again, if you are able to choose when you wish to use electricity based on different prices during different times of the day, and then the savings you could make will surely make it all worthwhile. Judging from the amount of investment which has been made so far with regards to this technology, we may well see this become a reality sooner rather than later .

Are Smart Meters The Answer To Using Less Energy?

By Jerry Dyess

Recently there's been a lot of talk with regards to installing smart meters in all homes. These so called smart meters are essentially advanced electric meters which have the ability to identify power consumption in far greater detail than the old regular meters. This information is then relayed back to the utilities company for monitoring purposes as well as billing, but the question remains, will these meters really make any difference as far as reducing power consumption is concerned. In order to shed some light on the topic, let's take a look at exactly what one can and cannot expect from the new smart meters.

Of course for smart meters to function properly, they need to be able to communicate information to a central command, and this is without doubt the biggest problem yet encountered. However, various proposals to have been put forth with regards to this issue, some of which suggest the use of cellular networks, power line communications, and even radio.

Just recently, the U.S. president openly called for 3,000 miles of transmission lines and a total of 40 million smart meters to be installed, making it the most ambitious upgrade the country's electrical grid has seen in the last 40 years. In fact, many people believe that it will have such a significant influence on society, that it could be compared to the Internet. Furthermore, because this project promises to be able to make use of power which originates from clean power projects, it has received a great deal of support. Additionally, it is widely accepted that such a project will help to curb the need to for additional power production centers.

Residential Solar Energy

By Gilbert Hernandez

Everyone can benefit from the advantages of residential solar energy, but the tricky part is taking the time and understanding where to get started. Since the sun doesn't run out of fuel, at least not any faster no matter how much of it we use, it is considered a renewable energy source unlike fuel and coal. There are some terrific advantages of residential solar energy and the most important thing is that not only do these advantages of residential solar energy benefit you if you start using it but also it affects the rest of the world. When developing a residential solar energy system for yourself here are the basic steps you need to follow.

Of all the different advantages of residential solar energy, one of the most talked about has to do with the environment and how beneficial solar energy is because it does not contribute to problems like global warming. The reduced cost of energy that is also renewable is just one of the great advantages of solar energy. The best idea is to get a list ready that tells you all the necessary supplies needed in order to begin building. To avoid returning to the store or having to dismantle and reassemble parts of your system you need to make sure that you first go through the plan and understand all the instructions and that you have all the necessary ingredients.

Residential solar energy also helps with the reduction of unwanted byproducts. Electricity that is produced by burning coal leads to much unneeded waste and contributes a great deal to the worldwide pollution problems. For one thing, solar energy improves air quality because fumes from kerosene lamps and other fuel sources are being used less. The advantages of solar energy are truly incredible and everyone should be taking advantage of them.

In order to really take advantage of residential solar energy systems make sure you only invest in high quality materials. There are some people who are still on the fence about whether or not to make the change. Kerosene lamps and diesel generators run out of fuel and need to be replenished to be operational, while solar energy just remains constant and endless.None of these are true and the simplicity of setting up a residential solar energy system in your home is unbelievable.

As you can see, those tips are very powerful, and before we continue, I just want you to know that you can find some great resources in the resource box below this article.

Solar Hot Tubs Are A Myth

By Stanley Gerterd

If you are trying to save money on electricity you might be interested in getting a solar powered hot tub instead of a regular type. One concern of any new hot tub owner is always how much the heating bill will be for the hot tub and is there any way to reduce it? On the surface, a solar hot tub sounds like it might be a solution but is it really going to work and save energy like you want it to?

Hot tubs typically don't completely turn off and maintain the temperature at a high level so the unit is always using power to some degree. This is actually cheaper than turning off the power and letting the water cool between uses. One thing any hot tub needs to keep in the heat and use the least power is a cover that traps the heat. If you have a cover that does not do the job, you will have costly heat loss that will use unnecessary energy.

You can find hot tub covers that have solar cells on them that assist with maintaining the heat but of course you need a lot of sun for this type of cover to make a difference. If you dont live somewhere that gets a lot of sunny days, any sort of solar accessories you buy for your hot tub will probably end up being a waste. The reason why you can't go out and by a solar hot tub is that there is not enough demand for them and the manufacturers don't make them.

If you do have a lot of sun, is it really worth the extra price you might pay to get one? Will you truly save energy and how long will it take for you to recoup the extra dollars you might have to spend to get one? These are questions you should research before you spend too much time and money equiping your hot tub with solar cells. Solar cells are usually expensive so you have to know what you are doing first.

Of course, if you are just trying to save energy and go green you will not care about the money savings or whether it is truly economical. But solar hot tubs are kind of like the hybrid car in that they might not be worth it in the end. Now that gasoline prices have gone back down, sales of hybrid cars have plummeted because they are so much more expensive and not worth the extra investment. Solar hot tubs are probably much the same in that you may never get your money back in energy savings.

Michigan Waste Management: What You Should Know About How they Work

By Phillip Connely

Waste management is one of the ancillary costs of living in cities, and has been so for nearly five thousand years; some of the earliest records we have of civilization are of city states regulating what can be thrown out where and by whom. Fortunately, we've come a long way in terms of disposing of waste, of making waste management viable, and bringing a lighter impact from our high energy society. Michigan waste management is an excellent case study on this.

The state of Michigan is surrounded by three of the Great Lakes, including the Upper Peninsula. This makes Michigan waste management a particular challenge, because the natural place for toxins and other impacting elements to show up is in the Great Lakes themselves.

Michigan produces a wide array of both consumer waste and industrial waste, in large part due to heavy manufacturing jobs. These waste products all need to be sorted, catalogued and dealt with, in an environmentally effective way. Michigan waste management regimes include proper disposal techniques for liquid and solid wastes, including industrial process byproduct disposal and municipal trash.

This is largely due to the huge number of manufacturing jobs in the region. Such waste products need to be properly stored and sorted. This way, the waste can be effectively catalogued and dealt with in a manner that will not harm the environment. In this regard, Michigan waste management regimes have invested enormous resources in proper disposal techniques for both liquid and solid wastes. This will also include industrial process byproduct disposal and municipal trash items.

There are a number of challenges faced by Michigan waste management and one of the most problematic is where to store needed materials. Prior techniques of hauling trash out to landfills, incinerating it and burying the byproducts have long since been proven to be of limited viability, due to air quality issues and a lack of suitable locations for disposal. Then there is also the worse issue of byproducts and hazards deriving from manufacturing processes. Problem items such as degreasers and dioxins must be properly disposed of or else they create an enormous problem to the environment and the local community.

Michigan waste management problems come from the mixture of residential and commercial waste issues within the state.

A large portion of Michigan's waste management venture begins with a pick up. Both the Federal and State levels deliver incentives to make sure that the ability to collect refuse is not complicated. Grants have been put in place to aid the cities to pay for municipal trash pickup. This occurs even when there are declining property tax bases and as tee decline in businesses.

The Future Of Michigan Waste Management and What It Entails

Michigan is at a turning point when it comes to collection and disposal of waste products. The state is working hard with waste pickup vendors to reduce the energy costs, including replacing diesel garbage trucks with ones running on natural gas, and on re-using abandoned rail corridors to take waste to central repositories.

Various initiatives have been devised to recycle and reuse waste products that Michigan produces throughout the state. Such significant emphasis on recycling may lead to a huge transformation of Michigan waste management in the 21st century.

Also interesting are the many widespread initiatives to reuse and recycle a great deal of the waste that is produced in Michigan's cities. The adoption recycling can transform Michigan waste management in the near future.

Executive Order - Energy Use Must Be Reduced

By Daniel Stouffer

Following the issuance of an executive order, energy use is now the subject of considerable attention throughout federal agencies around the country. President back Obama issued his new EO with relatively little media fanfare, but we can be sure that its repercussions will be felt far and wide around the United States.

Following his appearance at the United Nations, Pres. Obama was roundly criticized for not being more proactive on the subject of climate change. Shortly thereafter, following his signing of the executive order, energy change requirements landed squarely on the desk of each federal agency chief. Each agency faces a significant challenge to conform.

Obama's predecessor, President Bush, was far from one of the most staunch advocates of climate change and energy restrictions in general. His own executive order on the subject only brushed over the concept of carbon reductions.

Within the details of Obama's executive order, energy use must be analyzed at the federal level by a comprehensive process of determination. The agencies have been instructed to develop a 10 year plan and determine their own levels of reduction, as indicated by a percentage figure. This will require each agency to devise a system and once approved to ensure that it is initiated.

Details of the Executive Order, energy conservation, methods of implementation and reporting will all pose a challenge for the government. Each agency must take stock of its greenhouse gas inventories, a process never achieved before and we will for the first time learn the size of the federal carbon footprint.

As the largest consumer of energy in the country, the federal government must take the lead when it comes to reducing greenhouse gases. Due to to the sheer size of the government and its many employees, there is bound to be an additional effect as these measures become widely interpreted and adopted by suppliers and communities.

According to the executive order, agency officials must work interactively as they develop new practices to ensure compliance. Each individual asset must be scrutinized and its overall efficiency determined, a major job in itself. The agencies will no doubt be looking for solutions and software packages to help them achieve this goal.

The world will soon unite to consider a new international climate change protocol. Within the U.S. Congress, climate related legislation is stalled and Pres. Obama's new administration faces major hurdles ahead if it is seen to be credible on the subject of environmental protection.

Harness the Power of the Wind with Household Wind Turbines

By Don Olivia

Getting electricity from wind to power our machines is hardly a new concept, after all windmills have been around for centuries. The difference is that today we have the technology to convert that energy into electricity far more efficiently than ever before. Not only have industrialized countries harnessed wind power, but the average homeowner can now produce electricity using their own wind power.

Converting wind energy into electricity is done with a wind turbine. You've probably seen these behemoths in fields across the country. Recent advances in the technology have made it possible to downsize the turbines and make them viable for home use. If you've been noticing funny looking 'wind mill' things popping up in your neighborhood, you may have wondered if your neighbors have lost their minds or if they just know something you don't. The truth is that there are wind turbines made especially for home use which are small enough to be mounted in the backyard or on a roof.

For those interested in purchasing a wind turbine and having it installed, it will cost you between $600 and $12,000. That's a big expenditure for most people. And with a projected energy savings of about 80% it would take quite a long time to recoup your investment. However, it is now possible to build a wind turbine yourself for just a few hundred dollars.

If you are looking to save money you can build a wind turbine yourself. It's an easy process and you do not need any special training. Thousands of people have done it with no special skills or knowledge, and you can too. It will only take a few days and a few hundred dollars. To build a small home wind turbine you will need some supplies, which will cost around $200, and a few days time. That's it. Quite simple, indeed.

Since one turbine can be enough to generate almost 60% of the electricity you'll need for your home, you can start to realize significant savings. Every day your wind turbine is working means another day of savings.

Building or buying your own wind turbine for home use is a great way to go green and help the planet as well as provide you with significant savings. Don't wait, start using wind power today. You'll be really glad you did the next time you get your utility bill in the mail.

Is Deregulation A Great Thing For Every Business?

By Zandra King

Being in a state or area that has allowed competition for power makes a person become no stranger to shopping for the lowest rate. The unit price for power that most people will compare between companies is pennies per kilowatt-hour. Along with shopping for the lowest rate comes looking at the corresponding restrictions, the criteria required to get the lowest rate. Yet with rates differing between six cents and thirteen cents in a given area, a shopper could easily expect many "hoops to jump" in order to receive a low rate. Start up fees, contract length, minimum hourly usage, and other such terms are just a start. Moreover, these charges can be varied from month to month for each patron or be fixed. Consistency from month to month in the rate pricing is usually categorized by the terms variable, fixed, or indexed.

Since fixed charges stay the same, a fixed rate plan will usually be paired with a minimum period of time on the contract and can "lock in" a low rate when rates are expected to rise. To the contrary, variable rates would be advantageous when the charges might be expected to remain stagnant and the patron would like the option to switch providers or cancel a contract in a short time frame. Indexed rate plans, however, can add complexity to the range of choices and confusion about what determines the rate.

Variable fees vary because they are based on the cost of the raw energy used to create the electricity, like the cost of natural gas. Indexed plans share the idea of variable rate plans that the rate varies from month to month AND that the rate is based on the cost of production, i.e., it is raised when the power provider must pass on to the end-user any rise in price of energy production. The uniqueness of the indexed plan is that it is more directly tied to the cost of the raw energy such that the end-user, the power customer, can be certain they are paying the lowest possible at the moment the raw energy is at its lowest cost. Rate plans that vary from month to month at the providers discretion can be based on a multiple of criteria that can be more subjective than the cost of production, like an end-user's credit history.

A variable rate plan can, however, have an advantage when the power provider is trying to compete with other providers because the provider can choose to charge less just to be competitive. Therefore, the end user may decide their commitment to a plan is based on two factors: whether raw energy cost -- the cost of producing energy -- is expected to rise or fall or maintain and whether their commitment is long term or short term.

In one scenario, an power consumer would feel confident that the cost of raw energy used to produce energy would go up in the near future, and that same consumer feels able to commit to a year with one provider, then that consumer might choose a plan with a fixed rate. Plans that lock in the rate for a year will likely have the lowest rate, as long as the customer's credit score, their lack of usage, or some other restriction does not bump the rate back up. If the cost of raw energy, however, is expected to fall, and the customer could commit to a year, then the customer might choose an indexed plan in order to "hug" the curve in declining costs as closely as possible.

But then let's say charges of energy are declining while a patron is not willing to commit to a lengthy contract, then that patron would possibly select a variable rate and be able to shop for other competitive pricing as soon as desired.

Still confused? To avoid the costly hassle of looking through all the various plans offered by the many providers, a customer can instead get the lowest rate by soliciting the help of an energy broker, a company that will shop on behalf of the customer and also be able to offer specially acquired low fees offered only through that broker. Energy brokers are like the generic "wireless" stores which offer prices from all different providers lower than could be attained at each provider's store because they are allowed to sell cheaper as an incentive from the provider to bring additional customers.

How Does Solar Energy Work?

By Mike Frances

This article explains a few things about the workings of solar energy, and if you're interested, then this is worth reading, because you can never tell what you don't know.

Solar energy is a renewable clean energy. All you need to produce electricity or heat is the inexhaustible supply of sunlight. Solar energy has no environmental insinuations and that is why the ecological citizens highly stress that it be connected as it is a great choice to the technologically made electric energy that can be costly. Not only the eco-friendly usage of outdoor solar lighting, it looks great due to its attractiveness and beauty as compared to normal lighting.

Power generated by using clean energy technologies can also be sold to the other countries, boosting the trade deficit. They can power remote locations, such as a cabin, RV or boat. Build solar-powered ovens and heaters with which to cook food.

It's really a good idea to probe a little deeper into the subject of the advantages and disadvantages of solar energy. What you learn may give you the confidence you need to venture into new areas.

Generating green energy using solar power and panels is a terrific way to take the strain off of the earth and eliminate the need for fossil fuels and pollution. Solar energy can provide power to pump water for animals, swimming pools, and watering gardens. Solar refrigeration, wood-dryers and vehicles are all useful and sensible energy ideas.

Solar energy heats water for home heating and domestic water. In summer, the system drives moisture from a desiccant, removing excessive humidity, cooling the home. Solar energy is reflected by'4,320 mirrors aligned in rows to 768 solar collectors with a total length of around 75 km. Construction of the plant began in February 2008 and involved shifting more than a million cubic meters of earth. Solar energy has no real disadvantages connected with it, except in some cases, it can be pretty pricey to get the gear that you need.

Those who only know one or two facts about the workings of solar energy can be confused by misleading information. The best way to help those who are misled is to gently correct them with the truths you're learning here about the advantages and disadvantages of solar energy.

Solar Electricity And How It Works

By Joe Brown

A number of concerned groups now and ordinary citizens are advocating for the use alternative energy. Reasons for the advocacy vary from concerns in the environment to some economic reasons. Solar electricity, a kind of alternative energy, would probably be the lesser-known form of alternative energy. So here's a bit about it.

Solar electricity is an energy formed by absorbing sunlight and converting it through a tool called solar panel. This tool uses photovoltaic technology to power up certain electrical equipment through sunlight. This happens when photovoltaic cells converts the solar energy into a solar power, making it capable of powering our electrical appliances at home.

The solar panel consists of solar cells that allow the absorption of the sun's rays which is then converted into solar electricity. The photovoltaic passes through two or even more semi conductors that are made from silicon. Every-time it is touched by the light, it would create electrical charges which is then transformed into direct current.

Solar electricity is rising in popularity everyday. All around the world, more and more people are supporting it and it has not gone unnoticed. So why would they?

Operation of solar energy systems are very easy, smooth to handle and also very silent when running compared to other alternative energy sources. The most valued reason to use solar electricity is that the process to produce solar power does not release greenhouse gases which makes it a very valuable especially in this age and time. Who wouldn't want to save the planet right? In a long term perspective, you will only contribute to it more and it would give you more savings every month.

With all these talk about it, you must want to know, "what's the best way to start with solar electricity?"

The main thing you'd want to purchase is the solar panel. Depending on how much energy you use, the cost for the panels would be relative to it. Without this, the rays from the morning sun wouldn't be absorbed.

But if you're working on a tight budget, never worry since you can build your own solar panels to produce solar electricity by just few clicks on the internet.

There is actually no reason for us to save money and at the same time save the environment. The use of alternative energy, specifically of solar electricity gives us the enjoyment of both worlds, saving the planet while saving money as well.

Can Solar Energy Benefit You And Your Lifestyle?

By Julie Manther

Solar energy is a clean form of energy production, which does not pollute the environment. The promise of cleaner energy and advancements in green technology has allowed solar energy research and production to take a front seat in modern energy production.

Thermal conversion and photovoltaic conversion are the two methods of solar energy used today. Using the heat of the sun to make electricity is known as solar conversion. Specialized material that can directly turn sunlight into electricity is involved in photovoltaic conversion.

Sunlight is necessary to solar conversion as the name implies. Sunlight Powered This also uses reflectors and mirrors to create large amounts of heat from exposure to the sun. (Thermal energy is a type of energy). The method used to start fires with a magnifying glass is called solar thermal conversion. The magnifying glass lens concentrates the suns rays to create a pinpoint of intense heat. Actual solar cells used to store heat use this method to superheat liquids that produce steam. The steam produced can turn a turbine and produce electricity.

Photovoltaic Conversion is a big scientific term for light that is converted into energy. Photovoltaic cells usually consist of panels, which contain two layers of different materials. When the two layers are touched by light, one layer gets a positive charge, while the second layer gets a negative charge. Very much like a regular battery, which has a positive end and a negative end, when a wire connects the two ends, they produce an electric current. When the two layers of material in a solar cell are exposed to light, an electric current is created.

Just one solar cell will of course work better when the sun is shining. You can derive the maximum benefits by their exposure for a longer duration to direct and scorching sun.

Solar cells are used today to power anything from small personal devices, such as cell phones, to large communities. Solar power offers many benefits including the fact that it can be portable, and that it protects the earth.

As written earlier, if you have ever used a hand held or lighted magnifying glass to light a fire|to spark a flame, you have used solar energy.

The devices offered today are more efficient and effective then ever before. The use of solar power is very promising for our use now and into the future.

Frbiz.com Reports China Prudent Over Tapping Combustible Ice

By Tian Li

China will put environmental concerns as top priority in tackling ways to exploit combustible ice, a kind of natural gas hydrate, in the permanent tundra in its northwest plateau region, said a combustible ice project leader.

"We do not need to drill very deep to get the flammable frozen compound from tundra here in Muli Prefecture in Qinghai Province. However, as the sample is taken out, methane gas is easily released into the atmosphere," said Wen Huaijun, chief engineer of the combustible ice project in Qinghai.

He said the project team under the China National Administration of Coal Geology is carrying out research to guarantee that the exploitation of the frozen natural gas does not cause environmental problems.

Combustible ice is regarded as a potential source of alternative energy to coal and oil. One cubic meter of combustible ice can release 164 cubic meters of natural gas.

The Ministry of Land Resources said on Friday that the prospective volume of the natural gas hydrate in the country's frozen earth regions is estimated to reach 35 billion tonnes of oil equivalent.

China announced the first discovery of the resource under the bed of the South China Sea in May 2007. Wen said the environmental threats from the use of the resource even in a land-based region is enormous, because it releases carbon dioxide or methane into the atmosphere.

"The plateau region is very sensitive to environmental changes. The biological conditions here are vulnerable," he said. Combustible ice usually exists in seabed or tundra areas (two mediums having the strong pressure and low temperature necessary to its stability). It can be lit up like solid ethanol, which is why it has the name "combustible ice."

Wen said the combustible ice research project has been carried in Muli Prefecture, 4,100 meters above sea level, since 2004. "It still takes time and a huge amount of research investment to realize the dream of exploiting the resource, while ensuring the environment," he said.

Wang Jianbin, deputy director of the Qinghai Bureau of Land Resources, said at the present stage, the project focus is still to ascertain locations of the deposit, and carry out a feasibility study on its exploitation.

Advantage Of Renewable Energy

By Jason Myers

The world presently has an even greater increase in its need for energy. This is due mainly to the fast increase of population, which has more than two times in the last 50 years. This has resulted to a strain on our energy supply, which has brought about an increase in energy prices as well as shortages in a lot of parts of the world. Conventional energy supplies like petroleum and gas are said to have been dwindling significantly and has the probability of running out completely in the future. This has influenced many individuals to search for another energy sources an example of which is renewable energy. The idea of renewable energy is not new.

individuals have been utilizing every benefit of renewable energy for many years for various purposes. Others utilize it for heating and cooking while others use it for lighting their houses. There are those who use it move their vehicles and operate their machines. This renewable energy comes in many types the common ones being solar, water, wind, biomass and geothermal energy. Today, with the current situation about conventional energy resources like fossil fuel, individuals have been looking for means to use this power to give electricity and power to their homes.

The primary advantage of renewable energy over fossil fuels is the reality that it is renewable. This signifies that it may easily be refilled without so much effort for man. This is because this energy is produced using natural methods so they are normally found in nature. These causes them nearly infinite in amount and so are not in risk of running out. Additionally, this energy can't be easily consumed because it just goes back to nature where it was connected.

Due to the reality that they come from nature, renewable energy is additionally dirt free and does not usually give harmful effects when harnessed and used.

This advantage of renewable energy is very vital specifically nowadays where a lot of the environmental pollution comes from power plants and factories that are used to provide electricity. By using renewable energy, this pollution can be significantly lessened and may also be avoided in the future.

The Make Natural Power Guide Reviewed

By Tim McDonald

I am sure you have heard a lot about all guides out there that promise to show you step-by-step how to make your own home solar panels and wind generator. One of those guides happens to be "Make Natural Power". But does it live up to its claims? And is it the your best option? Here is my experience with the guide.

The only thing I liked about Make Natural Power was its cover. Everything else was completely useless. On the outside it looked like it had all the features, but the advice was very limited and not that helpful.

Good Aspects:

The only thing I liked about it was that you can eventually build your own solar panels and wind turbine, but it will take you forever if you are not technologically inclined.

Why it disappointed us:

* Poor drawings

The drawings were very poor. They were dull, incorrectly labeled, and not even scaled down properly.

* Useless solar power

The instructions were not easy to follow, and the illustrations did not help either. Because of this, the reader is required to figure things out on their own, resulting in a useless solar panel system, if it ever get finished.

* "Thin" maintenance information

While I eventually got my wind generator to work, it ended up breaking after 2 months. This could have been prevented if I was given correct advice on how to effectively maintain the wind turbine.

* Slow customer support

A lot of the time we had to contact customer service for assistance. But they were very slow to respond, and by the time they did reply we had either forgotten what the problem or had figured it out ourselves. On average, it will take over 5 days to get the answers you need.

Overall Rating

If you are willing to get a cheap knock-off of Earth4Energy, but for the same price, then by all means get the Make Natural Power guide. The book was terribly written, the instructions were confusing, and it was not a pleasant experience for me.

Global Warming and Glacial Melting: What Does It Mean for Our Future?

By Jerry Dyess

Global warming, which is the term given to the recent climate changes we are currently seeing, happens because average temperatures around the world have increased. They are doing so because more and more carbon dioxide is being emitted into the atmosphere -- and if we don't do something now, we'll all be affected, no matter where we live. The climate changes we see now should be a concern to all of us, no matter how old we are. We need to demonstrate that we can be responsible and change this, so that others will follow suit. We need to make changes now, so that these already dire climate changes don't escalate.

Global warming is happening because, as research has shown, heat is being trapped in the atmosphere. This happens because deforestation, vehicle emissions, and pollution from industrial processes all have produced extra heat on the Earth's surface. This is increasing average temperatures. It has been projected that the planet itself is overheating and that our environments and we will all be adversely affected in just a few years by negative climate change, unless something is done. It is happening now, but we can begin to control it simply by changing a few behaviors.

Climate changes will change the rate of growth for plants and flowers, affect the population sizes of plants and animals, deteriorate glaciers, raise ocean levels, and continue to change weather patterns. Human activity is causing the increase in temperature, and human activity can slow the rate of climate change.

Eventually, animal and plant species will decrease and many will become extinct. Many think that this will not affect humans, but they do not look at the big picture. The big picture is that all living things are linked together. The food chain will be altered and many species will become destroyed. Climate changes are destroying animal eating habits and changing the growth of the food that we eat.

Future generations are sure to experience intense weather patterns, which will increase death tools. The economy will be negatively impacted in many ways due to climate changes. For example, wheat fields and coffee bean plants will be destroyed by intense storms. That in turn, increases prices at the grocery stores. And never mind the economy, changes in weather patterns will increase death tools during increased hurricanes, tsunamis, and storms.

Where does all of this extra carbon dioxide come from? It comes from industrial pollution and from carbon dioxide emissions from cars. Restrictions are beginning to be put in place such that this type of carbon dioxide emission is minimized. We can decrease these climate changes through carbon dioxide over exposure if cars and industries themselves reduce emissions by 3% year.

Everyone can help contribute to slow down global warming. Some simple household tasks that can help decrease climate change are recycling, planting a tree, weatherizing your home, and replacing old appliances. Some other tasks include eliminating plastic, buying a fuel-efficient car, and car-pooling to work or school. Younger generations need to be educated about how humans negatively impact their environments and need to be directed on what changes to make for future generations.

Overall, climate changes are evident now and will drastically change the future. The choices that we make now will impact our future for sure. By simply allowing more oxygen in our atmosphere, we can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that is covering the Earth like a warm blanket. Humans can start with baby steps to preserve our planet for future generations. Climate changes will impact our future, but we can all help to slow it down and then maybe focus on reversing it. Time is not on our side when it comes to climate changes in the future.

Alternative Electricity Generation At Home Is Possible

By Bart Forcey

Alternative electricity generation is the wave of the future and will be very important for providing electricity years to come. Specifically the focus has moved from burning fossil fuels to using renewable energy sources. Burning gas, coal, and petroleum currently produces the vast majority of all electricity generation. Some renewable energy sources include hydropower, solar energy, biomass and wind power. There is a lot of research being applied to renewable energy sources.

Alternative electricity generation should be embraced because it is extremely environmentally friendly, as it does not produce any waste products. Fossil fuels will one day run out and as those fuels diminish the price for energy and electricity produced form those products will increase dramatically. To access electricity that is affordable as well as good for your family and the planet alternative renewable sources will have to be utilized.

The use of slow moving ocean currents has successfully generated electricity. This type of electricity generation cannot supply the planets needs but it can supply over 15 billion people by accessing just 0.1% of the ocean's currents. The vibrations that occur in the water are transformed into energy, which can then produce electricity. These vibrations can be due to gravity, fish swimming or wind at the surface of the ocean.

Solar power will soon be even more affordable then ever as research at MIT has produced an even more effective solar cell for less money. Researchers have managed to increase effectiveness by 50% and decrease the amount of silicon in the cell. The silicon is what makes cells expensive so in essence you are getting much more for your dollar then ever.

It is quite possible that waste will be turned into an alternative electricity source, as a new waste to energy project will take care of much of the waste disposed. Garbage is a problem to the environment and this is a great renewable options. Municipal trash is burned to produce steam and electricity. This has been know to produce electricity for over 100 years yet it has not been a popular source of electricity. This is a fantastic way to get rid of landfills and produce electricity at the same time.

Although it may appear that burning garbage is an inexpensive way to generate alternative electricity, it is uncertain how viable this option really is. Given the current state of technology, the hazards of creating toxic fumes or adding to carbon emissions are greater than the potential benefit of reducing the amount of garbage put into city landfills.

Wind power and solar energy are the most effective alternative electricity generation methods but some cutting edge technology focuses on harnessing the energy from the change of pH between the soil and trees, cyanobacteria, and more. There are many areas of renewable energy yet to be discovered and it is with hope that world embraces renewable energy production over the consumption of fossil fuels.

The Origins Of Brent Crude Oil

By Jack Kane

North Sea Brent Crude was originially discovered in the early part of the 1960's and is refined and consumed by; the UK, Norway, Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Brent Crude Oil is the biggest of all classifications of North Sea oil which there are; Brent Crude, Brent Light Sweet Crude, Oseberg, Ecofisk and Forties. The name 'Brent' comes from the bird the 'Brent Goose'. In the easrly 60's Exxon and Shell had a policy of naming their newly found oil fields in the North Sea after birds. The actual giant Brent oilfield in the North Sea from which the first Brent crude was taken, was discovered in 1971 by Shell in the North East of Shetland, in Scotland.

Other renowned classifications of crude oil include Dubai Crude, and West Texas Intermediate (WTI), which is a light and sweet form of crude oil. Crude Oil is considered 'sweet' if contains less than 0.5% sulphur, if the sulphur content is higher than 0.5% it is considered 'sour'. Crude oil with a low sulphur content is the most coveted form of curde and widely acknowledeged as premium quality. It is most commonly refined into petroelum. North Sea Brent crude is used to price two thirds of the world's internationally traded supplies.

The most coveted, highly prized and sought after oil in both the North Sea and around the world is,' Light-sweet crude,' as its the easiest to refine into gasoline, kerosene and high quality diesel.

The term 'Sweet' originated in the nineteenth century. In those days the early prospectors tasted and smelt the newly struck oil to determine its quality. The low levels of sulphur found in the oil provides it with a mildly sweet taste and pleasant aroma, the term has remained ever since.

The Sun Is Powerful, Here Is How You Can Harness It's Energy

By Julie Manther

Solar energy is a clean form of energy production, which does not pollute the environment. The promise of cleaner energy and advancements in green technology has allowed solar energy research and production to take a front seat in modern energy production.

Currently there are two methods of harnessing solar energy; thermal conversion and photovoltaic conversion. Another way to generate electric power is using sunlight to create heat. This method is known as solar thermal conversion. Photovoltaic conversion uses sheets of a specialized material that can create electricity directly from the sun.

As you would expect, sunlight is required to use solar thermal conversion to generate electricity. Solar energy is a type of energy This method utilizes reflecting surfaces and mirrors to amplify the amount of heat that can be generated. (thermal). If you have ever starting a magnifying glass fire, than you were using solar energy. You are able to create a very small space of very intense heat using a magnifying glass. Actual solar cells used to store heat use this method to superheat liquids that produce steam. Steam is created, which in turn moves a turbine that converts the energy into electricity.

The efficiency of a single solar cell is determined by its exposure to direct sunlight. Both time and intensity of sunlight will play a factor.

Solar cells are used to generate electricity for a variety of things, such as cell phones and entire communities. Solar power has the advantage of portability while traveling or camping, not to mention it also very environmentally friendly.

As stated earlier, anytime someone uses a handheld or lighted magnifying glass to get a fire going, have used solar energy.

The devices offered today are more efficient and effective then ever before. The use of solar power is very promising for our use now and into the future.

Massive Tax Breaks For Solar Power For Homes Investors

By Sam Deane

With any tax incentive you come across, be sure to read it first. Some tax incentives only apply to commercial solar projects. What you want is tax information for residential solar projects.

Don't forget to talk with the federal government, and ask them for form 5695. This will allow you to tell them your costs for installing a residential solar power system. If you live in certain states or countries, you may get a 30 percent tax credit for your costs, up to a total of $1,500 for existing homes. This is on offer all the way through 2010 for major home improvements as well. You could also claim solar hot water heater system credit, as long as the system is found in your residential solar power plans. The most of a credit amount you can get is $2,000.

Recently, the $2,000 cap was removed for solar hot water heaters. Consumers who use solar hot water heating can claim the full thirty percent of the cost of the system as a tax credit. This unlimited amount also applies to solar panels systems as long as they comply with electrical and fire safety codes.

Costs that qualify for this tax credit include your solar system and hardware costs. Therefore, you can claim for the cost of your residential solar kits including the equipment and the hardware you will need to build the full system. DIY residential solar power system builders can benefit from the costs being less if you shop for your components wisely. You will get more benefit of the tax credit this way.

All over America each state has its own tax credits and incentives for those residents who choose to invest in their own solar power projects. You benefit from taking a look at a great online solar power tax credits database that catalogs renewable energy source incentives all over America. Called DSIRE (Database for State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency), you can find it at www.dsireusa.org.

Taking a look at California for example, the fine city of Sacramento has established a residential energy efficiency loan program for local residents who can now defer their home improvements costs if they involve renewable energy sources. If you are a property owner, you can benefit from one of these loans at good interest rates (just 8.5 percent).

There's no harm in taking a look to see what your state and federal government is offering when it comes to going green. Make the best use of these tax incentives and turn your solar power for homes system into a realistically affordable proposition.

Renewable Energy Alert

By Jason Myers

Most things in life need energy in order to run. This fore can come from a lot of varied basis, some of which are renewable and others are not. In recent years there has been a lot of talk about renewable energy and the good impact that is has. So why must you worry about renewable energy?

Using a source of energy that is renewable is so cost-effective. As soon as a company or an individual has set up a method to create their own energy they can wave goodbye to the utility bills. Solar power for instance can be very functional to power the appliances within a home and to generate heating systems.

The natural resources of the world will not be consumed as quickly if people are using renewable energy. Over time gas, coal and oil are all being run down and this will lead to them turning non-existent.

Supplies of these naturally occurring substances are not endless and over time they will completely run out. Utilizing energy sources which are renewable end to this event. Utilizing renewable energy helps to maintain the air around is fresh and clean. In comparison using non-renewable forms of energy will produce smoke chemicals which will pollute the air. Fortunately there is no pollution which is created from utilizing a source of energy which is renewable.

damaging and dangerous materials are not made through the production of renewable energy. After all using wind, water or solar power to generate electricity does not involve any kind of activity which creates by products. Regrettably the same cannot be assumed for nuclear energy which is something of a complicated subject some individuals.

Not like non-renewable sources of energy renewable energy will not be consumed eventually. For example, those who use solar energy will always be able to use the power of the sun. Wind turbines will forever be able to use the power of the wind to generate electricity. And the tide will forever create enough waves to produce energy which can be effortlessly used.

Turning Trash to Treasure

By John Kirzno

With all the trash accumulated each day it was bound to happen. Some person, somewhere was bound to find a way to turn some of that trash into treasure. Actually, with everyone going green these days, there are some wonderful treasures out there that started as someone's trash. Everyone is getting into the act from individuals to large corporations, to entire city planners.

Individual Treasures

People who enjoy doing craft projects learned a long time ago, that using trash was a simple and cheap way to create wonderful gifts and decorations for the home. From quilts and braided rugs made from scraps of old clothing to lamps made from large glass jars and buttons individuals have used their imagination to create wonderful crafts from every day trash.

It is no longer unusual to see beautiful and funny Christmas ornaments made from burned out light bulbs, or coasters made from CDs. Anyone who enjoys crafts can find a way to recycle trash to make interesting and eye catching decorations.

Recycled Material Used for Playground Equipment and Playground Safety Measures

Recycled plastic milk containers and other plastics are being used in the manufacturing of playground equipment. These sturdy equipment sets are used in schools and residential playgrounds across the county.

In Bloomfield NW a pile of recycled tires have been dyed a deep blue and forms the base of an entire children's playground to help prevent serious injuries should a child slide down the slide too fast or take a tumble.

Trash for Energy

For years animal waste has been used as fertilizer on farms and in gardens and now it is being turned into sources of fuel.

The latest fuel source from trash though comes from the landfills themselves. When landfill waste decomposes it releases a gas known as methane that is poisonous. Companies have now found a way to purify this gas into a fuel know as LFG (landfill gas). In California LFG is being used to fuel 300 garbage trucks as they go about their daily business of collecting garbage.

Trashy Art

Artists are now making use of trash to make beautiful sculptures. In Tuckaho State Park there is a lovely serpent sculpture made entirely out of recycles tires. Other sculptures include a gleaming silver bull made entirely out of car parts, a centipede made from bunt cake pans, and a giant skull made from various kitchen utensils.

These sculptures are not only turning trash into treasures but giving cities some great public art in the process.

Mount Trashmore

Perhaps one of the finest examples of how imagination can turn trash into treasure is a park in Virginia Beach, Virginia known as Mount Trashmore. This entire park is made from a landfill. Where once piles of garbage marred the landscape there is a 165 acre park where families come to enjoy picnics, children play on the playground, joggers can exercise, and fisherman can enjoy a day on one of the two beautiful lakes.

This park that was once an eyesore to the city of Virginia Beach is now their pride and joy.

When people puts their minds to it they can do almost anything and turning our trash into treasure not only helps the environment but can add beauty to our lives.

The Main Benefits of Outdoor Solar Lighting

By Brian Calderdale

Using solar lights as a way of lighting the outside of your home has become an ever popular way of adding a great lighting scheme and improving security round your property in one go. You might even have noticed the use of this type of lighting more and more in designs of public outdoor spaces as well. This is because as the quality of the lights have improved so they have become more popular with commercial designers with a green agenda.

Newer solar light models have become more and more self-contained, they now have the ability to switch themselves on as dusk approaches and off once there is enough daylight. This means the entire process of 'collecting' the energy from the sun, converting it to electricity, and storing it in the lights batteries have all become processes that the light deals with automatically.

The efficiency of this type of light has increased many-fold in recent years. This has added to the popularity of the many different types of solar lights you can now buy, from walkway lighting, to solar driveway lights, and various styles for your deck.

Installing outdoor solar lighting is so much easier than installing standard type lights. For a start there are no trenches to dig to lay cables, and you won't have to pay an electrician to connect the wiring as there is no wiring. When it comes to placing the lights in your design, if you are unhappy with the look you have, just move the lamp to somewhere else and re-fix it in place.

Five top facts about outside solar lights

1. Light your yard or deck for free - no electricity to pay for

2. Easy to install, no cables or installation costs

3. Ease of use - automatic operation to switch on ... off.

4. Lots of different designs and styles to choose from.

5. Much improved safety at your property.

The best thing about solar lighting is that it is free to run. You won't ever receive an electricity bill for using your lights because all the power comes from a free source. Solar lights are also very low maintenance as well, once you have them installed where you want them to be, they will switch themselves on and off each night, all you need do is check the battery once a year.

In my opinion, the most rewarding reason for using outdoor solar lights is the positive impact they make to our environment. Unlike standard electricity, solar power gives off zero emissions and uses zero fossil fuels. Whether you are in the developing world or in one of the world's major economies, solar lighting has a strong part to play in providing part of our energy needs for the foreseeable future.

Creative Ways to Use Boxes After Moving

By Adriana Noton

So, you've reached your new home, you've unpacked and now you're stuck with dozens of moving boxes. Boxes, even when flattened, can take up a lot of space. Unless you're planning to move within the next few months again, it's not worth it to keep them around. So just what can you do to use those boxes once you've finished moving?

There are a number of things you can do with those boxes, but whatever you do, don't throw them out! Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Sell them. How did you get hold of these moving boxes? Chances are, you either bought them from a moving company or else spent a lot of time scavenging suitable ones. It's hard and expensive to find good, sturdy moving boxes, so it stands to reason that others will be looking for the same thing you did just a few weeks ago. They're often willing to purchase boxes that have been used once, at a lower price. You get rid of the boxes and earn a bit of cash and the new buyers gain all the boxes they need for their move at a savings in time and money.

Turn them into storage. While you can certainly leave some things packed in the basement, attic or garage, there are other methods of storage. For example, you can cover the boxes with nice contact paper and stack them to form cheap, sturdy shelves in a child's room. If you do stack them, offsetting is best for stable shelves and you should use something to hold them together. You can either remove the flaps, or screw in door handles to the two that close horizontally and use a hook to hold them shut.

Make a tunnel. This works particularly well for a child's birthday party, but has also been used as a fundraiser. Take all the boxes that you have and open the flaps on both ends, taping them to elongate the box. Now start taping them together to form a long tube. You can actually create a maze this way. To form intersections, you'll need to cut some boxes open and use them to cover the open areas where two or more tunnels meet. This works very well when it's dark, since people can actually become semi-lost inside the box tunnel. The tunnel should hold up for some time, particularly if you've used sturdy tape, like duct tape.

Insulate a garage or attic. Cardboard works well to help insulate, which is actually why many street people use it as bedding. However, you don't need to be poor in order to make very good use of those insulating powers. Use the flattened boxes to cover the roof or walls in a drafty garage and keep things warmer, or use it to lower the temperature a bit in your attic.

Whether you decide to use your moving boxes in your home or sell them and make some extra cash, don't just throw them out. They're still incredibly useful.

Solar Energy - Use it Now!

By Evans D. Smith

Solar electricity has been around forever at least so long as we humans can tell. Solar power has been used for centuries. It dries your hair when you run out of time to employ a power blow dryer. It may fry an egg on the path on a hot summer day. It also liquefies your ice cream on the same day.

But now, solar energy has a completely new meaning, as does solar energy system. How and why has this happened? The history of solar energy is fascinating.

Coal Started This Story

When coal was being used almost exclusively during the Industrial Revolution, it was the norm. No one was concerned about finding another source of fuel, although they were starting to use biomass and fossil fuels, and wood had been in use for a long time. The use of solar energy was first contemplated in the 1860s as scientists thought that coal was becoming less available. But in the early 20th century, coal and petroleum were again easily available, and weren't too expensive.

During the oil embargo (1973) and the energy crisis (1979), the government's energy policies worldwide were under scrutiny. There was renewed interest in developing solar technologies. Government developed special programs with incentives, like the Sunshine Program in Japan. The United States had the Federal Photovoltaic Utilization Program. Governments in many countries also developed research facilities (United States, Japan, and Germany were notable.)

To be fair, in the United States there had already been commercial solar water heaters since the 1890s. There were increasing number of users of these systems, until there were more reliable and cheaper fuels. Solar water heating was of interest during the oil crisis that happened in the 1970s but when the price of petroleum went down, so did interest in solar water heaters.

Since the 1990s, there has been increased interest in sun-powered heating, and now it's the most well-liked solar technology. There are more used of solar power, however.

For office buildings, solar energy can provide day lighting systems and reduced need for air conditioning.

For farming, solar energy can run the pumps, wine presses, and even the chick brooders.

For cooking, solar power is utilized for cooking, drying, and pasteurization. These can be of varied forms, from reflector ovens ( remember using those while camping? ), panel cookers, which use solar cells to collect heat, and box cookers. These can reach temperatures satisfactory to cook just about anything.

Top Tips For Solar Energy Efficiency

By Evans D. Smith

Solar electricity is energy harnessed from the sun and store din batteries that function to release the stored energy when it is required. Many people believe that solar electricity is the solution to a lot of requests about the state of the Earth and the environment. In spite being a replaceable resource, very similar to wind power, solar electricity potency still must be practiced to help preserve energy. These are solar power potency tips which should help to reduce the utilization of energy.

Efficient Gear

The need for well maintained and properly set solar energy equipment is necessary for solar energy efficiency. The use of high efficiency solar cells are also recommended for better solar energy efficiency since these kinds of solar cells process solar energy better and faster than any other generation of solar cells. Choosing the right kind of solar cells as well as other kinds of things necessary to make a more efficient bid at solar energy usage, is commendable and helpful in creating a more efficient house.

It is not just high potency solar cells that have to be used but also sturdy and trusty batteries in which to store the energy captured by the solar cells for better solar power potency. The battery helps the charging and discharging of energy in itself. A battery that fundamentally wants tiny upkeep and functions in the predicted way with less fuss is an example of solar power potency.

The dispensation of solar power also should be helped well by the inverter that changes the sort of energy to a serviceable form that's basically employed by most appliances in a home. If the inverter or converter can't function sufficiently well to use the majority of the energy in the battery, the stored energy won't have been used well.

Proper Use

Even though solar energy is a renewable resource which may last longer than most people's lifetimes, the fact remains that irresponsible use of solar energy can still be detrimental to the health of the world and the environment. Solar energy efficiency should also be practiced in using it as conservatively as possible to be able to not abuse what is stored in the batteries. Other uses may be possible if the energy is used responsibly.

Solar energy efficiency is a necessary step to responsible usage of energy in any form. Getting used to responsible usage will help the environment and future generations.

Top Tips On Solar Energy

By Leanne Rogers

In today's world, it seems that almost any topic is open for debate. While I was gathering facts about solar energy for this article, I was quite surprised to find some of the issues I thought were settled are actually still being openly discussed.

Solar energy, as the name itself suggests, is sourced from that glowing ball of fire in the sky that we call the sun. What we call sunlight is actually beams of electromagnetic waves that are absorbed by the upper strata of the earth's atmosphere. Solar energy and 'going green' are getting a lot of attention these days. Many people are talking about thin film solar cells, also called solar film. Solar energy technologies still remain a costly alternative to the use of readily available fossil fuel technologies. As the price of solar panels decreases, we are likely to see an increase in the use of solar cells to generate electricity.

Solar energy generated at home can also be used to light up your home and even heat your home. Hence you can imagine how much money you are saving annually by using this alternate source of power. Solar energy is directly from the Sun. Solar energy works entirely independently, it does not require any connections or anything, so it can be used effectively and easily anywhere. Systems can be set up anywhere, in remote locations as well.

The best time to learn the pros and cons of solar energy is before you're in the thick of things. Wise readers will keep reading to earn some valuable facts about solar energy experience while it's still free.

Not only the eco-friendly usage of outdoor solar lighting, it looks great due to its attractiveness and beauty as compared to normal lighting. Solar energy production should be constructed at the local scale, such as residential roof tops, commercial and industrial rooftops, and already disturbed areas. The City of Davis in California has a solar energy complex in the City's former wastewater treatment plant.

Solar energy heats water for home heating and domestic water. In summer, the system drives moisture from a desiccant, removing excessive humidity, cooling the home. Solar energy is reflected by 184,320 mirrors aligned in rows to 768 solar collectors with a total length of around 75 km. Construction of the plant began in February 2008 and involved shifting more than a million cubic meters of earth. Solar energy has no real disadvantages connected with it, except in some cases, it can be pretty pricey to get the gear that you need.

The day will come when you can use something you read about here to have a beneficial impact. Then you'll be glad you took the time to learn more facts about solar energy.

Blueair Offers Long Warranty on Air Purifiers

By Ben Burr

There are certain considerations to make when buying an air purifier. Like other appliances, you'll want to make sure you get the best while still staying within your budget. While there's nothing wrong with being frugal, you may not want to skimp when it comes to air purifiers. These appliances affect your family's health ... are not something to buy on the cheap.

Why would you want an air purifier? Well, it may have reached your attention that the air indoors nowadays can be more polluted than the air outdoors. A few decades ago it was all about air pollution by cars, factories and chemical plants, and rightly so. Now it is the silent enemy indoors that threatens out health. Micro-organisms are floating through the air, causing allergies, asthma, nose, throat and eye irritations, headaches and internal damage to organs. And more, but you get the picture.

Naturally you want to rid your home of all potential dangers and health hazards. If you've decided to purchase an air purifier you're off to a good start. However, it's not an easy process with so many different options to choose from. You'll first need to decide what kind of air purifier you'll need. Will a portable unit suit your needs or will you require a larger unit that will clean the air of your entire house. You'll need to decide the answer to this question before even starting to shop as there will be plenty of other questions that crop up. If you're unsure, there are several purifier sites on the web that can help you decide.

Once you've made that decision, you'll need to consider which model to purchase. As an air purifier, the primary feature to look at is the filtering system. Most purifiers use a HEPA filter which is the same thing used in many hospitals. HEPA filters remove 99 percent of the pollutants as the air passes through it. Another feature, which is more of a convenience issue is how often you'll need to replace the filter and how easy it is to do so.

The best air purifiers are a bit more expensive than the others. The Blueair air purifier is one of the best, and has a long warranty. That is very important since this will be an appliance you will use very often if not 24/7.

While you may be able to find a bargain, if you just have to replace it a year or two down the road you won't actually be saving money. With a lengthy warranty like the Blueair air purifiers offer, a unit that's a bit more expensive up front may well be the best value in the long run. The last thing you want to worry about is whether or not your purifier is working properly. You just want clean air! The Blueair unit will allow you to both rest and breath easy on that front.

Home Wind Turbine Design Uncovered

By Tim McDonald

A few years back if I were to ask you what a home wind turbine was, you would most probably describe a massive tower with over-sized rotors plaguing the fields. But, with technology advancing and the ever-increasing energy crisis, it is now possible to have your own, scaled-down home wind turbine. What's more is if you want to avoid the exorbitant prices of expert systems, you can learn to build and erect it yourself.

So, how does a home wind turbine make power?

A home wind turbine makes power by spinning a generator. The generator is attached to the rotor, made up of three aerodynamic blades, that is then attached to a tower. To keep the turbine facing the wind, the rotor has a tail, that acts as a weather vain.

As the blades turn the motor, copper coils rapidly past near magnets, creating an electromagnetic charge. This charge is then stored in batteries for later use. If you want the the wind generator to power your home, the power first needs to be passed through an inverter, where direct current is converted into alternating current. With the design and science behind the motor becoming more advanced, it has made home wind power more appealing.

The tower's main purpose is to hold the blades high up in the sky, to catch those stronger winds. It windy areas, it can be slightly shorter, and in calmer regions, the tower will be taller.

With more money being put into research, the blades have changed drastically over the years. The rotors generally have 3 instead in of 5 blades now, since the blades have become lighter, stronger, and able to spin in very light breezes. The blades also come an assortment of diameters, according to the average wind speeds and energy needs.

Up until now I have been talking about your average horizontal axis home wind turbine. But there is also another design taking off. It is a wind turbine that spins on the vertical axis. Also know as a VAWT (vertical axis wind turbine), this generator's blades resemble some type of water-wheel on its side. The problem with the VAWT is that it spins rather close to the ground, making it unable to catch the stronger, higher up winds, so it is not a good option for residential home-owners. Also when erected in open areas, the blades are large and spin so fast birds do not see them and fly straight into them - which is not very eco-friendly.

What you need to know before you buy a home wind turbine:

How big is the property?

Home wind turbines tend to work better in open areas expanding over an acre, where few nearby buildings can deflect the wind.

How windy is it where you live?

For the system to operate effectively, it is best to install the wind turbine is areas where the average wind speed is at least 11 miles per hour. You could get away with this by erecting a taller tower, and fix on larger blades.

What else can I use the wind turbine for?

The more uses you can think of for your wind power, the more attractive it will be to get one. Windmills have been used for centuries to pump water through irrigation systems, and farmers still use them today.

Do you rely on an uninterrupted power supply?

This is why so many people want to get a small wind turbine in the first place - to keep the house powered during blackouts, and prevent economic losses. Although the wind turbine may not power the house all the time, it's stored power can be used in emergencies, when the utilities are just not enough.

Taking the above points into consideration will help you determine how much power you require, the length of tower needed, the diameter of the blades, and the benefits and costs of using a home wind turbine.

The good news is that technology is forever evolving. The motors have become so light and efficient that they can be used in a number of smaller wind turbines attached right to your roof, instead of having to rely on one large wind turbine.

Although professional home wind turbines can run into several thousands of dollars, it is possible to make your own for a tenth of the price, with components found at home and your local hardware store. Furthermore, the U.S. offers both state and federal tax credits that you can use to offset the installation cost. So not only will you reduce your electricity bill, but also your tax at the same time.

How To Prepare For A Clean Energy System

By Evans D. Smith

Installing a clean energy system in your house can be pricey. In reality you may wonder halfway through why you even worried in the 1st place. Without the proper research you could end up severely unsatisfied with the result.

You may have expected a huge savings in your electricity bill, and yet after your system is in place you find that the numbers are still not low enough. The truth is you have to treat renewable energy as a clean energy investment. The returns will not be seen immediately.

Energy Potency

Many people make the mistake of thinking that a clean energy system will give you energy efficiency immediately. The reality is that you should be thinking of ways to make your home more energy efficient before you install a clean energy system.

The first thing you have to do is toss out all of your incandescent light bulb. Instead you should be using compact fluorescent lamps. These bulbs reduce power use and last for longer. Start looking at other stuff you may need to replace in your house such as household appliances.

Other home gizmos like printers, TVs, cell telephone chargers, and radios can consume energy even if turned off. So long as these appliances are wired into a power source they're leeching electricity and adding to your electricity bill.

To avoid this and make some savings on your electricity bill you should purchase power strips to plug your appliances into. Power strips have a switch that you can switch off and on to make sure that your appliances aren't using any electricity when not in use.

Older chillers, washing machines, and dryers are less energy efficient. You'll get more out of your clean energy system when you have appliances that are energy efficient. This is applicable to air con and heating systems.

Considering The Right Solution

Once you have started to take these small steps toward energy efficiency you can then think about what clean energy system is right for you. Solar power is gaining popularity but it is not the best solution for everyone. Wind turbines are another possible solution for anyone who would like to have a clean energy system in place.

A study of the yearly weather patterns will help you to make a better call as to what clean energy system will be the best for you. Consulting with a clean energy expert will also help you to make the best call for your house.

Windmill Energy - How to Harness It

By Evans D. Smith

Energy that's gotten from the wind is many times called windmill energy. This is really because mills are used to supply or to utilize the power. Windmill energy is sort of dynamic and the key word is wind. It's critical to take a look at how this power is harnessed and the science behind it all. First, let us look at how wind comes about in the 1st place. It is often described as air in motion. We see it all the time particularly when trees and objects start moving. It comes about because of the uneven heating of the earth surface by the sun.

How It Works

The earth is made up of different materials, surfaces or elements including land and water. For this reason, heat from the sun will be absorbed at different rates. Basically, when there is a hot day, the air on land will obviously become more heated compared to air on water. The air that will warm up will rise and the cooler air below will fill the space left and this is the basic way that wind comes about. Windmill energy has been recognized all over the world as one of the most important power sources. There are many advantages of wind energy. Windmill energy was initially used to grind corn and wheat. Over the years, Americans tapped into this power to first produce electricity in rural areas.

When windmill energy started becoming more popular, windmills were used to supply this power. These mill of wind looked like propeller blades and plenty still do even today. They have definitely been improved to become better to supply more windmill energy. Those that have benefited the majority are people in the rural areas. One of the real reasons why this is so is better action or favourable action and movement of air in areas that are agricultural. There are no environmental distractions like buildings to get in the way for simple or perfect production of energy.

In the harnessing of windmill energy, mills play a pivotal role. The windmills are used to capture the kinetic energy of the wind. Basically, windmills will slow down the speed of wind. As the windmill energy is produced there will be a lift that will have a similar effect as the wings of a plane. Meanwhile, a generator will be connected to the blades to make sure that there is capture and production of energy. It is a pretty simple concept that has continued to gain popularity over the years. There are different kinds of turbines or machines that continue to be used for this process.

Investigation of Green Energy Alternatives

By Evans D. Smith

Even if a home owner does not want to do a remodeling of the home, there are some green energy resources that he can check into to make the home more energy efficient. These green energy alternatives are much more viable to use in the home today as opposed to years past. In the past, there were large solar panels that had to be mounted on the roof of the home to supply the solar energy for the appliances in the home. These panels were unattractive and did not do a very efficient job of supplying the energy. Today, there are some solar panels that can be mounted on the roof of the home, but they are not as bulky and are much more efficient than every before.

Power Sources

In addition to these solar panels, there are other green energy alternatives that can be used in homes. Instead of solar panels on the roof, people can now use solar roofing tiles that look like regular roofing tiles but capture the energy of the sun and direct it to the home. These green energy alternatives can be paired with a solar powered water heater to help with the hot water supply in the home. A lot of energy is used to heat and supply hot water to the bathrooms, clothes washing machines and kitchen appliances. This cost can be offset by a solar water heater which is usually mounted on the roof of the home to capture the sunlight.

There are other green energy alternatives that are used in the home. There are outdoor lighting systems that can run purely on solar power. There are even some indoor lights that can run on solar power. If the home is located in a windy area, there are other green energy alternatives that run on the wind's power. These turbines are set up to turn in the wind and supply power to the home, or to water pumps on ranches or farms. Other green energy alternatives involve the cars that are driven, with more and more being made as hybrids so that fossil fuels are not utilized as much. In addition, there are some power companies that are committed to finding more renewable energy sources and are implementing these sources in addition to the traditional ones. People can also make the choice to dry clothing outside and to make sure that lights are turned off when not in use.

Changing the thermostat in the home in the summertime and winter months so that the house is not actually as cool in the summertime or as hot in winter are other concepts as green energy options.

Climate and High Blood Pressure- is there a link

By Christian Goodman

A client recently wrote to me questioning if there was a link to hot climates and an increase in blood pressure. My initial thought was, "no," as an increase in blood pressure among different countries is usually always related to diet and exercise level.

Two recent studies, however, dictated that blood pressure in older patients already suffering from high blood pressure (hypertension) was actually significantly lowered when exposed to hotter climates than normal but only during daytime hours.

In the evenings, however, the systolic number (top number) actually increased significantly. I assumed that this is because the subjects were in air conditioned environments at night. This was not the case so temperature did not seem to play a role.

Patients who did not suffer from hypertension were unaffected either way by the rising daytime temperature.

A different study showed a minute increase in blood pressure when introduced to colder temperatures however, the subjects were able to acclimate relatively easily and blood pressure returned to original levels.

Additionally, rates of strokes and heart attacks do not decrease during summer months. This could be for two reasons. First, experts have found that people tend to decrease their blood pressure medication during the summer months.

Moreover, extensive evidence indicates that over time, people conform to their surroundings and blood pressure is not an exception.

A number of my clients, however, stated that they used an ambulatory blood pressure cuff (these can be acquired at any pharmacy) and recorded the time of day and outside temperature. During summer months the daytime readings did in fact go down.

Employing closer scrutiny, though, I found that most of my clients doing this were also much more active during the summer daylight hours. I won't name names but many of these same clients also stated to me they simply stopped taking their blood pressure medicine when their numbers started to decline.

You all know that I do not believe in taking medicine to control a health problem when a natural cure can be found. That said, I DO NOT believe in simply stopping any prescribed medication without first talking it over with one's doctor.

These medicines are strong and have possible side effects when taken as prescribed. Taking too much or stopping all at once can have serious effects. If you truly want to get off the medicine, discuss weaning yourself off the medicine with your doctor first.

Don't be astonished if your doctor is highly skeptical of doing this. Don't forget, there was a reason your doctor prescribed the medication originally. Left untreated, high blood pressure can damage all of the major organs, eyes and other tissues, which can in turn lead to stroke, heart attack, blindness and other ill health effects.

Should you prefer a natural solution to your hypertension, I highly recommend my High Blood Pressure program. It's all natural and easy to do. Once you reduce your high blood pressure, you can bring this evidence to your physician and he/she will have to acknowledge that a natural solution works!

Choosing A Clean Energy Source

By Evans D. Smith

Clean energy is very hot at this time ; in principle it sort of feels like an excellent idea with advantages for everybody. Not only does it help the environment, purchasers can also benefit from lower electricity bills. In practice however this doesn't always work out. The high price of installing a clean power source like solar or wind energy may cancel out any monthly savings on your electricity bill.

Then there's the usefulness of using solar, wind, and other clean power sources in your house. Not every one of us can afford the high installation cost. Even if cost isn't the issue often an area isn't acceptable for a specific green energy. So how can you continue to help to reduce carbon emissions while staying in your budget? You can do both with a little ingenuity.

The Right Power Sources

Your electricity provider plays a giant part in whether you may have access to a clean power source. Historically power firms produce energy by burning traditional fuels, limiting the decisions for clients who need to go green. However some states now require power corporations to supply electricity using replenish-able sources of energy.

Sometimes this means that there are different electricity companies in your state and some of them may offer a clean energy source for electricity. However this practice does not extend to all states. The EPA now has helpful links to different renewable energy resources available in each state.

Do It Yourself

For those who are handy with a toolbox there is another option when it comes to finding a clean energy source, you can make your own solar heater. More and more people are experimenting and designing solar panels that power some parts of the house or provide hot water for the home.

There are many simple designs for solar panels that can be used to power up some parts of the house. The best part is that this clean energy source is relatively inexpensive to set up. You can skip the expensive installation associated with solar panels and get right to the savings on your electricity bill.

Alternatively you should purchase a solar energy panel or wind turbine system to harness a clean power source but keep it on a tiny scale. You may not be ready to power your entire house but you could be able to make a big difference in your energy usage. When joined with energy potency across the house this is a particularly viable way to enjoy a clean power source.

What Is Natural And Gives You Energy?

By Randy Cage

In Australia, a recent study suggested that some doctors are drinking six cups off coffee or more per day, just to finish their long shifts at work. The problem is that the recommended dosage is 2 cups per day as a maximum. It is fine to drink caffeine, just in moderation as not to kill ourselves by forcing our bodies to function when rest is actually required. So whether it's six cups a day or the recommended two cups a day, let's take a look at some replacements that could be a lot better for you.

100% Natural And Safe - Of course at times you will need an energy boost, so turning to natural alternatives such as herbal stimulants to give you that 'pick-me-up' is a good idea.

The first and most widely accepted alternative to coffee for that well needed boost is green tea. Green tea may be drunk hot or cold, and even mixed with juice, or made into an iced tea alternative... so it's the perfect substitute that may be drunk day or night. If feelings of comfort and/or exhilaration are on the top of your list, then green tea is the drink for you. Further more, green tea also boasts many antioxidant properties which are good for your mind, body, and over all healthy... so next time you need that boost you usually get from caffeine, try some green tea instead.

Another option is to try Yerba Mate, which is drunk like a tea and tastes like a cross between green tea and coffee with hints of tobacco and oak. It is a South American drink of health and friendship. Though it does contain caffeine, it has health benefits such as stimulating mental alertness, aiding in weight loss, relieving stress, calming allergies, aiding weight loss, supporting the immune system and cleansing the colon.

Gotu Kola is another herb to consider as it is an anti-stress herb that has been shown to decrease adrenal enlargement. It promotes endurance and energy and is also used for sluggish digestion and to improve memory. As sluggish digestion can affect energy, Gotu Kola is an all around great herb to use.

If you are looking for a product that doesn't contain any caffeine, then look no further than peppermint tea. Peppermint tea is highly refreshing and great for a hot summer's day... plus it gives you all the energy that you need day in and day out.

Please note that some of these herbs may have contraindications for pregnancy and should not be used unless a qualified health care practitioner is consulted.

Benefits Of Home Wind Energy Generation

By Leon Knoxly

some people are beginning to integrate the use of home wind power sources due to the fact that it is more cost effective and shrinks the amount of harm that is done to the earth's environment. Usually a turbine is used to capture the kinetic energy of the wind that is placed on a pillar that's comparatively tall and close to the residence in which it'll service. This turbine works to capture the kinetic based energy that's carried via the wind and then works to change it to actual electricity.

More and more home owners that opt to use this form of energy stay on what is known as a "local" electric grid. This is a contingent plan in case the wind speeds don't reach an optimal level. If this happens, there will be low to no electric output from the turbine in exercise. While there are some factors that go into discovering how much can be saved, 90% represents the higher end of the scale. Usually an individual on the bottom end of the scale can reap electric savings of at least fifty percent normally. A home requires roughly ten thousand kilowatt-hours or "kWh" of electricity on a year basis. To optimize a wind turbine to the point in which it supplies the best yield of energy, it might need to supply roughly 7 to 17 KW of power.

If you're inquisitive about implementing the utilization of home wind power generators, it's vital that you consider the quantity of property that your home rests on. Turbines that provide even a touch of power are capable of taking up huge spaces. If you live in an urban area with a tiny piece of land, then these wind power units won't be suitable for you.

There are small regions that could be suitable, these spaces aren't engineered to offer an super production of electric energy. When deciding if a wind power unit is actually useful for your home, the circumstance should be the average speed of the wind where you occupy. It is vital to discover what the average speed is before choosing to indulge in the acquisition of this kind of power unit.

It is best to have approximate speeds of 10 mph as far as a typical where wind is concerned. While most all states have experimented with turbines and have succeeded in capturing the kinetic energy from the wind, the states found in the Northeast as well as those in the Midwest have been most successful in raising the power emitted from wind turbines.

Many homeowners have been quite pleased at the savings that they have experienced by using home wind power generators turbines. As an important point, the majority are set up using a little meter that looks very similar to an electric meter and these units don't need a large amount of upkeep. These units don't need any modification to the wiring that's already placed in the home.

Can Solar Energy Benefit You And Your Lifestyle?

By Julie Manther

Solar energy is heavily promoted for its ability to produce a clean form of energy production. It does not pollute the environment and therefor considered a very green technology.

Thermal and photovoltaic conversion are the two contemporary means of harnessing energy from the sun. Using the heat of the sun to make electricity is known as solar conversion. Layers of a unique material contained the Photovoltaic conversion absorb sun's rays directly to product electricity.

As the name implies, solar thermal conversion takes sunlight Sunlight Powered This also uses reflectors and mirrors to create large amounts of heat from exposure to the sun. (thermal). The method used to start fires with a magnifying glass is called solar thermal conversion. You are able to create a very small space of very intense heat using a magnifying glass. Actual solar cells used to store heat use this method to superheat liquids that produce steam. It is the resultant product, namely the steam that sets the turbine in motion to generate electricity

Photovoltaic Conversion essentially means light that is converted to electricity. Photovoltaic cells usually consist of panels, which contain two layers of different materials. One layer becomes positively charged and the other negatively when light hits them. Very much like a regular battery, which has a positive end and a negative end, when a wire connects the two ends, they produce an electric current. When you expose the two layers inside a solar panel to direct sunlight, electricity is created.

The efficiency of a single solar cell is determined by its exposure to direct sunlight. Both time and intensity of sunlight will play a factor.

These days you can find many different products that are solar powered. Solar power offers many benefits including the fact that it can be portable, and that it protects the earth.

As stated earlier, anytime someone uses a handheld or lighted magnifying glass to get a fire going, have used solar energy.

The tools currently on the market save more power and produce better results than previous models. The use of solar power now and in the future is extremely bright and promising.
