Will Alternative Energy Jobs Save Us?

By Jessica H. Skymore

Will alternative energy jobs save us from ourselves? The state of the planet is in serious condition and we need to take some serious action in order to change the way things are. Water pollution, toxic air, and even indoor air pollutants are taking over the world in a steady pattern. Ground level ozone lingers on our door steps and we are now finally turning to renewable energy jobs to reverse the problem.

There is a great deal of potential in alternative energy jobs. With the knowledge and research that we have already been able to attain, it is clear that the most pressing pollutants still pertain to transportation and manufacturing. Without the immediate implementation of renewable energy jobs, clean energy may very well never exist. If we start today we will see a flow that is highly promising.

Wind energy has caught the eye of enough politicians that it is finally becoming part of the actual wind energy campaign. Turbines are being built. Engineers are discovering the best places to erect them off the coast line to power our towns and cities and finally start removing our energy dependence on oil.

If we could drop our needs for perpetual energy, or replace our energy sources, the gains would be more than merely lower energy bills but a lower ecological price. We need this type of action in order to start moving from our current energy practices into clean energy practices.

From every direction that we look at the problem there really only seems to be one solution. If we want to start developing a better planet to live on, we have to catch up to the damage the we have done already. By progressing in this stable and efficient manner, the market for renewable energy jobs will increase, simultaneously giving the economic issues another shove.

Alternative energy jobs are not out to turn the lives of the people upside down but they are to figure out exactly how we can keep the technology and lifestyles of the people intact while we eliminate the damage done from that technology and those lifestyles. We certainly aren't interested in going back into the dark ages.

We really can't afford to wait. There have been predictions made that the planet can destroy itself within the next 100 years, which is only a couple of generations away. We need the alternative energy jobs to come together and find a way to prevent the air from becoming toxic and make sure that our children and grandchildren will have clean air and water.

Today starts the first efforts toward a cleaner, better Earth. If alternative energy jobs are the key element to making tomorrow a better day, then perhaps it is time for interested parties to start making their ideas known, transition toward such jobs, and becoming educated to be able to jump in to the industry as soon as possible. Green collar jobs are going to help turn the world around, and being a part of that is something very extraordinary.

Is a Cap and Trade Carbon System the Right Approach?

By Daniel Stouffer

Ever since the slow realization set in and we began to understand that our conspicuous consumption over the decades has led to serious damage to our environment, as a society we have been looking for ways to turn it around. Certainly, the problem is gigantic as we are very reliant on the use of fossil fuels for our energy. The subsequent emission of dangerous greenhouse gases has caused a considerable problem and must be addressed.

It is unlikely that consumers in general would take sufficient steps by themselves to cause significant reversal to the problem of greenhouse gas emissions. It will be necessary for governments to take stringent action to force a change and to curtail the amount of carbon emissions. Within the United Kingdom, the cap and trade carbon system is now in place, which will ultimately drive down the production of greenhouse gases by effectively forcing the largest consumers to change their ways.

The Carbon Reduction Commitment is legislation aimed squarely at the largest producers in the United Kingdom. This cap and trade carbon system will place a limit on the total amount of carbon emissions and force individual organizations to trade between themselves and with the government, effectively reducing the overall volume emitted.

A cap and trade carbon system is a development of a scheme that has been in existence for some time now. The concept of setting a limit and forcing those consumers to trade in the marketplace to achieve overall reduction is not a new one, but the establishment of a commodity price for carbon emissions is. Many eyes are on the British initiative to see how it works, as it is likely to be adopted in similar format in many other countries.

According to the British government, there are approximately 5000 businesses that will be forced to participate in the cap and trade carbon system when it gets under way soon. These organizations will now be under a lot of pressure as they have no choice but to improve the efficiencies of their organization or face a financial hit from the increased cost of the carbon allowances that they must purchase. In addition, the government will be communicating the results of the program to society as a whole, creating potentially negative connotations for underperformance.

The Carbon Reduction Commitment has set goals of reducing the overall level of emissions each year up until 2050, by which time the intention is that carbon emissions will have been reduced by 80%. It is felt that this kind of aggressive action is necessary to ensure that even more serious and potentially devastating damage to our environment and climate is contained.

While you would have thought that the United States could lead any initiatives aimed at addressing climate change, there is still some confusion surrounding whether a similar cap and trade carbon system, as initiated by the British, will be adopted in this country.

Some critics maintain that a cap and trade carbon system is not the right approach, but it is unrealistic to expect individuals or corporations to take the degree of initiative required to make fundamental changes without such governmental interaction.

Ways To Maintain Human Health

By Lesli Jambers

Stress is a byword that nobody can seem to get away from. It has become the number one source of many illnesses and diseases. Despite the rapid changes in technology and fast-paced lifestyle, people still get sick. It has become an equalizer of sorts because regardless of age, gender or socio-economic status, no one is immune to it. If you are unlucky, you will bear the brunt of symptoms like headache, body weakness and tingling of extremities and so on.

Do you want to avoid falling into this trap? Then you must keep your health in an optimum state. The next few paragraphs will show to you the techniques to keep your body in perfect condition. Read on.

The first and most common tip is to consume the right kinds and amount of food. If you are a typical office employee, you must have a balanced diet. This constitutes a healthy serving of go food or carbohydrates, a tiny share of protein and a sprinkling of fats and sweets. Energy-giving food like bread, rice and pasta will keep you running and working throughout the entire day. Additionally, protein will fix the wasted muscle brought about by hours of inactivity. You must bear in mind to minimize sweets and fats too much intake of these items could lead to horrible lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Second, drinking 8-12 glasses of water every day is essential to keep the body well hydrated. The most common mistake that people commit is to guzzle a glass of water only when they are thirsty. This is not good because if this happens, this already means that the body lacks the fluid that will keep the brain and the vital organs from functioning well. This is the reason why you feel hot and cannot concentrate clearly on your job.

Third, having a regular exercise will do wonders. Whether it is done at the gym or at the local neighborhood will not really make much of a difference. What is important is you do it at least three times a week. A thirty-minute aerobic activity will make your heart pump more efficiently, thereby increasing your cardiac output and oxygenating your cells and tissues. You will certainly look much better because of this. Take time to learn a new sport like lacrosse, Frisbee, taekwondo or karate. If it is flexibility that you are after, join yoga or Pilates classes.

The fourth way to remain in a healthy condition is to visit your doctor regularly. Save some amount so that you can have an annual executive check up. This will entail a series of diagnostic tests in order to evaluate where you are in the spectrum of health. Tumors or cysts that are just starting to grow will also be treated especially if your family has a genetic predisposition to cancer.

Fifth, maintain a positive outlook in life. You must always strive to become an optimist because studies show that they live longer and do not sick easily. Having a happy disposition contributes to a better work output as well as improved relationships with friends and family members.

If possible, keep a smile on your face so that you will project a positive aura. People will be easily drawn to you no matter where you go. They will not feel threatened or challenged because you have a warm personality. In turn, you will also feel good because you have done others a great service.

Building Wind Power Generators To Power Your Home

By David Sullivan

In the future, all of our energy will come from renewable sources. With traditional gas and energy costs skyrocketing, it is apparent that we need to find new ways to make energy production which are sustainable. We need to change our thought process about how we use the Earth and begin to convert our old energy grid into something sustainable.

Many people have already begun to think this way. Problems that we have previously had with renewable energy have been solved and new engineering breakthroughs have allowed us to take the next steps toward a completely sustainable future.

With good blueprints, even homeowners inexperienced in engineering or construction can create their own renewable energy sources, such as wind power generators.

Homebuilt wind turbines can make as much power to reduce the average household's power bill by 60-70%. The right advice can show you how many people make their wind power generators for as little as $200 US.

They can be built with basic tools and parts from a local hardware store. You can estimate the amount of power a generator creates using the following formula:

Power(Watts) = (Wind Speed)^3 * (Blade Diameter)^2 * 0.00478

The speed of the wind is cubed, so it makes the most difference in your power output. For example, if you have a good average wind speed of 10mph and an 8 foot blade diameter, then:

W = (10*10*10) * (8*8) * 0.00478 = 305 watts/hour - x 24 hours and you can calculate 7.3 kWh generated per day by a wind power generator.

An average home uses about 12-20 kWh/day. Of course if you conserve your power you can reduce that to much less - even down to 5 kWh per day. So if you don't have a great average wind speed in your area, a wind power generator can significantly reduce your power bill, and it may only cost you $200.

Switch To A Programmable Thermostat

By Tal Potishman

Most homeowners tend to overlook the many ways in which they can save money and energy with a programmable thermostat. Many of us are being encouraged by environmental groups to make a positive change by going more 'green'. What better way to make a start then by purchasing a programmable thermostat? Installing programmable thermostats are a great way to make a start on those energy savings.

Non-programmable thermostats compared to programmable thermostats

A programmable thermostat has the advantage of changing the set temperature at predetermined times during the day, while a non-programmable thermostat will stay at the same temperature the whole day. With a programmable thermostat you do not need to worry about adjusting its setting before leaving the house or before going to sleep.

Programmable thermostats provide you with all the comfort you need, whilst maximising energy savings. It can provide you with warmth in the main living areas and then reduce the temperature during the day saving on energy. In other words, if you are looking to have a more convenient lifestyle, then programmable thermostats might just be for you.

Better Lifestyle

With a programmable thermostat you can control how you want to heat your house. For instance if you are on your way to work, you can set the temperature to be lower when you're gone and have it set to kick back an hour before you return. This way you get to save on energy while you're gone, but still have the comfort of returning to a warm home.

Saving during the winter season

Unfortunately the winter months can be the most expensive in terms of heating bills for homeowners. Fortunately with programmable thermostats, homeowners will be able to save quite a bit. However, this will only be the case if the programmable thermostats are used properly. Many experts have claimed that to take full advantage of the energy-saving benefits, homeowners should turn their thermostats back 10 to 15 percent for eight hours, while away at work or asleep at night. The homeowner will be able to save up to 10 percent on annual energy bills.

Selecting the right programmable thermostat

There are many programmable thermostats to choose from and before you make a purchase, it is best to check its compatibility with your needs. Whilst making your decision, you should first determine the temperature setbacks you want for your home and the simplest thermostat that will accomplish that need. One of the other points you will have to ensure is that the thermostat will be compatible with your home's heating system. In addition, if you have a cooling system, you need to make sure that the programmable thermostat will control both the heating and the cooling. Finally, note that the location of your thermostat can affects its performance and efficiency.

Improving Your Kitchen's Functionality With Under Cabinet Lighting

By Tom Sanderrs

Our kitchens are among the most often used rooms in our homes, but they're often not as pleasant as we want them to be. It's important for kitchens to be friendly, easy to use, and pleasant to be in. However, most kitchens aren't equipped with enough lighting for the jobs we need to do in them. If you want to make sure you're doing everything correctly, but your kitchen isn't a great place to be in, you may wonder what you can do about it.

It's important to be able to see when you're cleaning or preparing a meal. Unfortunately, cabinets and appliances cast shadows, which can make it harder to work in the kitchen when the sun isn't shining. Some kitchens even have lighting fixtures that cast shadows of their own, making things even trickier. Fortunately, there's a solution that's easy to implement and doesn't require taking down cabinets, giving up storage space, or a major remodel. All you need to do is install some good under cabinet lighting.

Increasing light in the kitchen has many advantages. People who have plans to remodel their kitchen can choose new cabinets with lights already installed on the underside. People not wanting to do anything major should not choose those new cabinets, though.

There are different ways to install lights on your cabinets. Although some may need the help of an expert, most will be able to install under cabinet lighting on their own. This form of lighting also does not drastically increase your electric bill, because the majority of under cabinet lights use LEDs and therefore little energy. The usage is similar to that of a doorbell. This is a great and convenient lighting solution for the kitchen.

Another method is to purchase a touch light or battery operated light that is attached with an adhesive. The directions instruct you on how to install these types of under cabinet lighting, but in most cases all you need to do is put in a battery and peel the backing off. The batteries will also have to be replaced and unfortunately the light is not as bright as others would be.

On the plus side, under cabinet lighting is not elaborate. Therefore, they do the trick and add light to your kitchen without having to spend a lot of money. No attention needs to be paid to the decor and what kind of lighting is purchased, unlike with other rooms and fixtures.

Even though not everyone needs under cabinet lighting, it is a good solution for those who think the kitchen is too dark. The added light makes a big difference in the kitchen and there are also lights available for any budget range. These lights can also be used in rooms other than the kitchen.

If you are tired of your dark kitchen, then think about what solutions there are to that problem. Under cabinet lights serve a function and give your kitchen a more attractive appearance. They are also easy to install and with little trouble you can make a big difference.

Energy Problem--Use Green Energy Solutions

By Jozel Max

The impact that pollution has on the environment is not a secret. This tragedy needs to be discussed at every dinner table on a daily basis. Family's can come up with ways to conserve energy at home or even better find ways to create and use green energy solutions. These solutions are available to every person that really wants to make a positive impact on the current pollution problem.

Water is the most important basic of living creatures. Without water nothing will live, including trees, animals, plants, et cetera. That is why it is not a wise choice to use water for automobiles or heat unless it is the water that is cleaned from the ocean. If the water were taken out of the ocean and heated to a boiling point for a certain amount of time the water will be considered distilled, and very drinkable, which can be used to flush out all the contaminations already caused by pollution, in current fresh water supplies.

Heating is one of the leading causes of deadly toxic pollution being released into the air. The exhaust from forced air furnaces that burn kerosene, oil, or diesel fuels release a high amount of carbon which is what adds fuel to the global warming fire. One green energy solution to eco friendly heating is by using the sun. The sun can provide enough heat all year around to heat any size building.

Next on the list is electricity. Electricity is created currently by manmade functional operations such as nuclear power which gets extremely hot and creates a waste product that has been kept in storage units since the first use. Not only does nuclear power create a non-disposable waste, but it adds heat making the overall temperature even higher. These heat generating devices are no good when the ultimate goal is to lower the temperature of the Earth.

Farming is one of the hardest working careers in the world. Most farmers do not get a whole lot of help from governmental agencies, however there are funds set aside just for the installing and operation of green energy solutions such as windmills. In some areas wind mills have existed for a long period of time, and are still the main source of electricity.

Any plastic materials should be recycled. Burning plastic will create more toxins than what is already present, and plastic is in no way bio degradable. There are more and more consumer goods being made from plastic, therefore it needs to be recycled.

Pesticides play a big role on the pollution set. People should resort to the old fashioned way of pulling weeds or killing bugs. Pesticides filter into the ground and reach underground water supplies creating bad water. Also the food produced by the use of pesticides will cause cancer.

Green energy solutions are numerous and need applied right now to stop global warming from gaining anymore strength. Global warming has already gained the strength to begin melting glaciers. Think about that.

Climate Change Quicker Than Predicted

By Paul Roth

An increasing number of validated scientific papers, published since the last IPCC Assessment Report in 2007, shows that climate change is happening now, and that it is speedier than suggested only 2 years ago.

The evidence for this statement is from many areas. Some of the areas showing change are shown below.

-Many physical systems, in widespread sites, are already showing evidence of global warming. Examples include the timing of plant flowering, animal breeding, and lake thawing.

-Warmer ocean surface temperatures in Pacific & Atlantic hurricane-formation zones leading to stronger storms are significantly linked to human-induced warming.

-Acidification of the world's oceans is happening quickly, because of CO2 in massive amounts being dissolved in salty water. This is going to have major changes on marine environments and as a result food supplies for many areas.

-Calculated sea level rise this century will be greater than that calculated just 2 years earlier. It is expected to rise at least a meter, according to new scientific evidence.

-Rapid melting of Greenland's glaciers, which began in 2004, is conclusively due to the greenhouse effect.

-The West Antarctic Ice Shelf has undergone rapid melting over the last 10 years and has suffered 10 major ice shelf collapses over that time.

-Sea-ice in the Arctic is disappearing much quicker than previously estimated, and it is almost a given that this area will be ice-free in summer within a few decades.

-Permafrost in the Arctic Circle is thawing much quicker than recently thought, and is releasing larger amounts of greenhouse gases than predicted.

The warming that is now taking place is expected to go on for many centuries, after all human-sourced CO2 escape ceases. This is due to the significant delays that exist in the climate-ocean system, as well as the long half-life of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Being Carbon Neutral Help Reduce Global Warming

By Braniff Watson

One of the largest threats faced by the world today is the rising worldwide temperature. There are countless factors, which make a contribution to worldwide temperature rises. We are going to be in a position to help minimize the rise in temperature and help in finding global warming solution by adopting some effective measures like becoming part of the Carbon Neutral Business movement.

Combining this movement and the drive to reduce such dangerous poisons like carbon from continuing to pollute our air we may have cleaner air and a safer environment to live in. The work of the people who run this organization specifically targets corporations that are known to emit vast amounts of greenhouse emissions and teaches these firms how they can be of help to the environment without actually cutting down on production as well as earnings.

There are four main areas to get this carbon neutrality in action : Limiting transport energy use and emissions that's walking, using cycles or public transport, avoiding flying, and using low-energy vehicles. Many firms are coming forward to help minimize these effects instead of adding to them.

The tools and the data gathered from the analysis of the Carbon Neutral Business movement reaches the folks that have to economize the contaminants that they emit. Then the emissions can be reduced with the info received from the people that run this movement and from those that monitor our environment and the air we breathe.

Going carbon neutral is also an edge over those companies who are not carbon Neutral because now a days the general public is more aware and worried about global temperature rises and its effects.

Going carbon neutral is also an edge over those corporations who aren't carbon Neutral because now a days the public is more aware and concerned about global warming and its effects.

This is often a little step taken by any company to take on active direction role in the fight against global warming.

Thinking Of Giving Your Bathroom A Makeover? Think Again

By Tal Potishman

Many people love the thought of giving their bathroom a makeover. It can be an exciting project to be involved in and the possibilities are endless. With many DIY shows showing how easy it can be to give your bathroom a makeover, the idea seems more appealing than ever.

Many of these makeover shows entice viewers into mixing and matching sanitary ware from different suppliers in order to save on cost. Whilst for many this is a personal choice, and can work out with excellent results, many of these experts fail to warn their viewers of the potential drawbacks of getting involved in such mixing and matching. Whilst hunting around for great bargains may be an appealing thought, many of them fail to mention how it can sometimes lead to disastrous results.

Beware of Colour Inconsistency

It is not just the cost saving aspect of it that has people shopping around from different suppliers. It all comes down to individual preference. Some just like the idea of making purchases based on the individual product's appeal. Whilst this can be quite fun, it is important to note that it is also risky business. If you are worried about colour inconsistency in your bathroom, you may have a problem on your hands if you shop around from different suppliers. Sometimes what appears at first to be the right colour may not be and only becomes obvious once you have the entire bathroom suite fitted.

If you wish for your bathroom to look uniform, then colour consistency is important. This is why many experts advise on buying not only from the same manufacturer, but also from the same range. This will ensure that you have colour consistency and it is better to spend a little more this way rather than take a risk and end up with a disastrous result. If you are going to spend lots of money on renovation then it is natural that you only expect the best result. Colour inconsistency becomes more obvious in smaller bathrooms. This is due to the fact that the sanitary ware are located quite close together and so the differences will be much more noticeable.

Sanitary ware clashes

However, colour inconsistency is not your only point of consideration when renovating. There may be a piece of sanitary ware in the bathroom causing a clash with the other pieces in the room. This detracts from the overall uniformity of the bathroom that neither coordinates nor compliments the rest of the bathroom.

This is not to say that a unique looking basin or bath cannot look good, indeed it can. However, some home-owners make the classic mistake of trying to have three radically different styles in their bathroom which ends up spoiling the overall look.

If you wish to go down the more selective route, it is best to select one type of sanitary ware you want to provide the focus, and the others should be from the same selection. This way you will have an overall coordinated look!

Stress is Both Good and Bad ? The 3rd Law of Personal Energy

By Gerry Geneva

Stress is good and bad. For most of us a certain level of stress is good for us. When you think about it at a deep level, you realize that all growth occurs outside of your comfort zone. We need stress in order to progress and grow into something more than we are now.

However, when unchecked, when exposed to a chronic and unrelenting high level of stress, our body begins to break down.

This happens across the spectrum of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual types of stress. Here are some examples:

Physical Stress - Working out your bicep is good, however, if you don't take a break and get some rest, you will damage the muscle causing yourself a lot of pain, and a reduction in your ability to lift heavy weight. Interestingly enough, many Olympic athletes lift weights only once a week or less because they know the importance of rest and renewal.

Mental Stress - Its common knowledge that the brain is extremely powerful. From mathematical analysis to creative thinking, you will see your performance increase dramatically, in addition to your energy levels, if you can learn to systematically give your mind the rest that it needs.

Keep this mind that some of the greatest thinkers of our time (i.e. Ford, Einstein, Edison, Churchill) were notorious for taking extended breaks in the middle of some of their biggest challenges. They found and often wrote about how when they took some time away from the challenge and gave themselves a break (in the form of naps, walks, socializing, etc), they came back with a different perspective, a clearer vision, and a deeper level of energy to solve the challenges of the day.

Naps are often difficult to arrange and quite honestly not everyone needs one. However, we can all benefit from deliberately setting times during the day in which we can give our brain a much needed rest. Just as with the physical, to be at our greatest mental energy levels, we need to take proper care of our mind.

Emotional Stress - Anyone who has lost a loved one can attest to the emotional trauma such events can add to your live. Emotions play a big part in your energy level because whether we are willing to admit it or not, we are emotional beings. When we think about almost anything, there is emotion attached to it. Deep feelings of distrust, resentment, guilt, sorrow can perform deep blows on our energy reserves. Emotional stress is one of the fastest ways to inefficiently burn energy.

However, its not the experience itself that is most telling, but what we do about it. You?ll likely recall that many of the most accomplished people you can think of achieved great success only after excruciating setbacks. I won?t go into a lot of detail, but know that we can gain energy from some of the most trying times in our lives, instead of losing it. It?s a matter of managing emotional energy, as opposed to managing an emotionally stressful situation.

Spiritual Stress - By spiritual I don't necessarily mean your faith or religion, although that plays a part. What I mean by spiritual is the deep convictions each of us holds dear to our hearts. Are you being true to yourself in your career? Are you on purpose? Are you striving towards a goal or vision of the future you desire for yourself and your family?

When you are congruent with your true self, you will find that the spiritual energy is one of the most pure and dependable sources of energy available. There is another side though, in that if you are not in alignment and especially if you feel like we all do at times that there is something preventing you from being in alignment, you will feel an energy drain that affects every aspect of your life.

In conclusion, its important to know that stress comes in both good and bad forms. If we can learn to harness all 4 sources of energy and correctly deal with all 4 types of stress, we will find that he have more personal energy that we thought possible in our lives.

Savings For Your Business

By Jerry Dyess, jr.

The late Milton Friedman was one of the greatest economic minds in history. It was Friedman who coined the term a business? number one priority is to earn a profit. Most people understand this. After all, a business that is not profitable will not be operational for long. However, most people look at profits from a narrow perspective. That is, they see profits exclusively in the form of revenues. This, however, is not completely the case. Profits are how much you have earned over your expenditures. That means a business can increase its profits by reducing its expenditures. And, without a doubt, the biggest expenditure drain a business often deals with is energy costs. That is why it is critical to cut back on energy costs if you wish you business to remain profitable. Thankfully, there are a number of easy ways to do this.

Don't overuse wattage in your light bulbs. Many lights utilize bulbs are far higher in wattage than needed. Purchasing smaller watt bulbs or even LED light bulbs would cut energy costs dramatically. Now, some may say LED lights are expensive. While they do cost more than traditional bulbs, they last a LOT longer and require less electricity. As such, they eventually pay for themselves.

Using timers for appliances which use a lot of energy can also save your business a lot of money on energy. Many businesses simply leave electrically powered items on over the weekend, resulting in a lot of wasted resources (not to mention money). Putting these items on a timer which will automatically shut them off will save a great deal of money in a relatively short amount of time. Timers are inexpensive and easily installed as well, so there is really no reason not to use them in your office.

Simply installing proper insulation in your building will also greatly reduce your energy expense ? it can be quite expensive to heat or cool your office, so insulation will prevent this heat (or cold air in the warmer months) from escaping. Insulation is also not terribly expensive and will pay for itself many times over.

You may also want to consider having an energy audit done. You can engage the service of professionals who specialize in inspecting buildings with an eye towards more efficient use of energy. You?ll have to fix the issues which an audit uncovers, but there is an incredible amount of money to be saved through implementing what are usually simple and inexpensive solutions.

In addition to saving a great deal of money for your business, there is an ancillary benefit as well. Namely, your business will be contributing greatly to the environment. By taking part in energy conservation, our natural resources will not be depleted at an accelerated rate. This connects to Milton Friedman?s assertion that the greatest social justice a company can perform is earning a profit. In this particular instance, boosting profits by cutting energy expenditures creates the ancillary effect of a cleaner environment. Any company that contributes to such a cause truly is deserved of acclaim. Why not let your business be among these companies?

A Good Decision is to Install Under Cabinet Lighting

By Tom Sanderrs

Most of us have found ourselves stopping by the cabinet section in our favorite hardware and home improvement stores, even when the goal of the trip had nothing to do with a kitchen remodel. There are lots of great things to see and dream about in this section, after all. Surprisingly enough, you can get a little bit of that "in the store" feeling in your own kitchen, and it won't involve a major renovation. Under cabinet lighting is the answer.

When considering the cabinet lights, the functioning of LED bulbs are pretty simple to install and it could be accomplished easily on your own. This could certainly make a remarkable change and of course does a lot to your abode. Although the existence of these cabinets is not new, the LED bulbs are comparatively new to the market. With remarkable energy efficient capability, these lights perform incredibly well and they fit in well by giving a newer look to the kitchen. People who desire for a new and creative kitchen will definitely find this is their best choice.

Most kitchens have the same problem and that is lack of lighting. By adding LED fixtures under your cabinets you can brighten up the room and that makes it easier to find things. There are many lighting options, such as recessed lights, flexible strip and bar lightings. Most can be installed without professional hope and are available in many colors. Although white and blue are the most common, other colors like green, yellow and red fixtures are available.

When you decide to install your fixtures, make sure you distribute all units evenly. This gives you the best lighting arrangement for your countertops. If you're interested in a dramatic look, you can simply highlight the backsplash, or you can arrange them to provide convenient task lighting. Just make sure you keep all your lights the same color, which means sticking to one company and brand. Even white lighting is often slightly different in tone from one manufacturer to the next.

Plant lovers will be happy with this, too. Indoor blooming plants will love your kitchen counters when you install under cabinet lighting. For dark areas inside cabinets or on top of high ones, think about putting a flexible strip. That'll make the room appear lighter and make working in the kitchen that much easier. Just make sure you don't install your strips close to the stove or other hot devices, which can affect the performance of your LEDs.

LED lights are also suitable for other areas, such as the undersides of a china cabinet or in curio cabinets. You can use them to highlight all of your best pieces and all you need for installation of smaller lights is double sided tape. Many options are available for you to take advantage of.

With the exclusive range of cabinet lighting available, you can make your kitchen effective and versatile. Now your kitchen will never be boring and of course will have a new look. Just be smart and be prepared to give life to your kitchen! Rather spending hours considering your home improvement options, just consider the implementation of these under cabinet lighting.

Wind Turbines Make Wisconsin Farmers More Profitable

By Matt Gladen

Wind turbines generate electricity by harnessing the natural energy of the wind. Wind Turbine Systems (not to be confused with wind mills), usually consist of an electrical generator sitting atop a tall tower and powered by using propeller-type rotors to transfer kinetic energy from the wind into mechanical power to power an electrical generator producing electricity. Consuming no fuel and emitting no air pollution, wind turbines are proven to be both environmentally friendly and cost effective.

Wind turbine systems are now available in sized ranging from fifty watt through utility several megawatts. Until recently wind systems were only available in very large sizes, and they were commonly constructed in groups to generate power for a specific area or community. Now wind turbines are commonly being installed at rural homes, farms, and even industrial and business complexes to offset energy needed from local utility companies and even generate an extra income for some.

Wind turbine systems have been installed residentially in at least 47 of the 50 states, mostly in the Midwest and Northeast parts of the country. Wisconsin residents have a unique benefit. Much of the state has consistent wind speeds between 8 and 50 mph, the ideal wind speeds for electricity generation.

Wind energy systems designed for residential and agricultural use work together with your local utility company. When your wind turbine is working you are producing your own electricity. If your system is not producing as much electricity as you need than you get the extra from the power company. If you are producing more electricity than you need, then your excess electricity is sold back to the power company.

Some say that wind turbines produce obtrusive noise that effects wild life and hurts the quality of residential life, but noise measurements of wind turbines have proven sound levels too low to have any effect on wild life. While small wind systems do make some noise, most people do not find the noise levels obtrusive or even noticeable in many situations. Some opponents of wind turbines also consider the units an "eye sore", but the systems are becoming more accepted with many considering landscapes containing wind energy systems to create a calming effect.

Recent tax incentives, grants, and financing has allowed homeowners, farmers, and rural industrial companies to take advantage of wind turbines financial benefits in addition to environmental benefits. Land owners are now able to erect and operate a wind turbine with low out of pocket expenses making getting started easy. The temporary incentives also assist them with a much shorter break even point and stabilized long term energy costs.

Determining if your property and energy consumption are well suited for a wind turbine is easy. Full service installers typically will assist you in all areas including: site assessment and feasibility studies, financing and grant writing, zoning application, wind turbine instillation, and maintenance. Most Wind Installers offer a free initial consultation.

How Do You Decide If You Should Be Using Home Solar Power Systems For Your Home?

By Sean Walker

Are you trying to decide if you should get a solar power system? There are many people that are choosing this energy source for their home for a lot of different reasons.

Of course, apart from simply having to determine whether or not a solar power system is suitable for your needs, there are also a few other things which need to be considered. The purpose of this article is to provide guidance as to whether or not sound power is the right choice for you.

Below are four important things one should take into consideration before making a final decision as to whether or not solar power is an ideal choice for your particular home.

One: Of course, as you can well imagine, a solar power system is for the most part a permanent fixture and as such, if you intend moving from your home you will be unable to take the system with you. In this respect, you need to be confident that you'll remain in your current property long enough to benefit from your investment.

Two: Is there big enough area on your roof to install solar panels that gets at least 6 hours of sunlight every day? For solar cells to work their best, the solar panels need to be placed where they will get the most direct sunlight each day. Dont put them on an area of your roof that has a lot of trees because this will block the sun from reaching the solar panel system.

Three: Do you feel comfortable walking around on your roof? This is important because if you are going to install a solar power system yourself, you will have to be up on your roof to do it; otherwise, you might want to have someone else install it.

Four: Another important decision to make is whether or not you intend doing the job yourself or having someone else do it for you. This is important for two reasons. First, if you decide to use a company you'll first need to locate one which is reputable. Secondly, you need to realize that the cost of a residential solar power system can be significantly more expensive when you make use of a company for the installation.

The four points which have been mentioned above are perhaps the most important things you will need to consider with regards to home solar power systems. The bottom line is, you need to do some research in order to learn as much as possible about home solar power systems before you actually go ahead and make a final decision. Whatever you do, just be sure to take what's been mentioned in this article, into consideration.

Refrigerator Buying Guide

By Martin Elmer

Even though the refrigerator is a relatively new invention, we take it for granted today. Actually it was not mass produced before the mid-40s. And it is still a luxury many people cannot afford in a lot of Third World countries.

So when have you bought your present refrigerator? Is it more than 10 years old? Then it is probably way over the hill and uses so much energy, that you can save a lot of money by replacing it with a new model.

The most important thing to consider is the size. If you buy a large refrigerator, there has to be room in the kitchen for it. A normal refrigerator has a capacity from around 18 to 28 cubic feet (including the space occupied by shelves and hardware). If you have a large family, you might consider the big models, while an 18-22 cubic feet model is enough for small families.

The next thing to decide is, if the door should be side-by-side, top-mount (with the freezer above the refrigerator) or bottom-mount (with the freezer below). The advantage of the last model is that the things, you use the most (in the refrigerator) is in eye-level.

The modern refrigerators are normally frost free and do have power failure alarm. So no more melted water in the kitchen, because of power accidents. Other convenient options are chilled water and ice cubes.

Do also look for an energy-efficient refrigerator, because it is one of the most energy-consuming appliances in the home. Look for the Energy Star seal. You will save a lot of money even though the price might be a little higher.

Do you like your refrigerator in white, black, almond or stainless-steel? Find the one that matches the other appliances and the rest of your kitchen. Your homes resale value can even increase, if you choose a stainless-steel refrigerator. And do not worry about the cleaning; you can buy a faux stainless-steel refrigerator.

You should also read a lot of ratings, consumer reports and reviews, before you chose a refrigerator model. Do also look at the total price; including installation- and shipping costs. Another way to save some money is to find a refrigerator with some minor cosmetic defects. Normally you can have it at a significantly discounted price.

All About Ashtrays

By Cody Scholberg

Trash can be roughly divided into two groups: cigarettes and everything else. Of course, there are far more specific subdivisions to be made but for our purposes as writers and yours as a business owner we'll stick to these ones.

Cigarettes can be a particularly nasty problem for the businessman or woman because smokers tend to congregate and, if they have nowhere to put their (cigarette) butts, these also congregate - on the ground. You could chase smokers away from your front area with a broom, but this is hardly good for business, and besides you may have other things to do. Far easier on everyone involved is an ashtray.

One ashtray available is a smokers' post. This is an ashtray with a long, often cylindrical neck whose mouth is too small to accept anything but cigarettes.

This risk is made negligible by two factors. First, its long neck means that cigarettes that have yet to be stubbed out are denied oxygen. Second, its narrow mouth means that other trash cannot be wedged in, so there's no risk of a burger wrapper or piece of scrap paper acting as fuel.

For a more practical option, go for a wall-mounted urn. These are small boxes, about the size of two laptops, with nothing on them but a cartoon cigarette to denote their purpose and a hole to put this purpose to use. They're not pretty, but they're cheap nad they get the job done.

Combined ashtrays and trashcans meet all your waste disposal needs. By investing in one of these, you can economise in ways that the other two don't allow, as there's no point in investing in a place for people to put their cigarette butts if they're just going to leave their orange peels and fast food wrappers all over the place. So, if you're on a budget, this one-stop-drop is the best way to deal with the inevitable, ubiquitous problem of trash. Buy one of these, and all your trash problems will be solved forever.

How To Solar Power Your Life

By Tim McDonald

For ages sunlight has been utilized by man. From being used in ancient temples for natural lighting to being converted to electricity for today's power hungry nations, the power of the sun has a number of uses.

So, how can solar power be used on a smaller scale at home as clean source of energy?

Currently, there are 4 general ways you can use solar power at home:

Solar Cooking:

A solar cooker is an extremely healthy, inexpensive and clean alternative to cooking your food. Though solar cookers have been used a lot to desalinize water in poor arid countries, many 1st world countries are adopting them in summer for cooking their food.

A solar cooker is made from a series of reflective panels in a parabolic shape that focus the sunlight on a box or pot, in which the food is cooked. It usually caters for up to five people, and can make a variety of boiled, roasted and baked dishes.

The one drawback of solar cooking is that it tends to take three to four times longer to cook food in. But if you weigh that against the unlimited power savings and its portability, having a little patience is not that bigger deal.

Solar Water Geyser:

Solar water heating has a number of uses, and thanks to technological developments, modern solar water heating systems can be used at home to completely replace conventional boilers or geysers.

As cold water is pumped through a solar collector, the pipes absorb the sun's energy, and heat the water, which is then stored in an insulated tank for later use. Usually the water can get so hot that it has to be mixed with cold water before it can be used.

Passive Solar Living:

What people do not realize is how much power they consume just to heat and light their homes. And if they could just see the benefit of using natural lighting and heating from the sun, they could save a lot of power and money.

With this form of solar power employment, sunlight is used as a natural heat and light source. The ideal passive solar home would have large double-glazed windows, with the length of the house facing the sun, and designed with materials that absorb the sun's light and radiate heat even after the sun has set.

And like the Romans used the sun to light up their temples, careful placing of windows and mirrors in our homes can increase natural lighting, helping us reduce the need for electric lighting.

A natural air conditioning solution would be to plant deciduous trees on the sun-facing side of your home. This would provide cool shade in summer, but allow warm sunlight though in winter.

A solar chimney can be installed for ventilation, where the air in the chimney is heated by the sun and rises, causing fresh, cool air to rush in through the home and up the chimney.

Solar Electricity:

Also known as photovoltaic power, many homes are starting to make their own power at home with solar electric panels. These panels are made up of small silicon cells and need to be directly aimed at the sun to be most effective.

As the sun's rays penetrate the solar panels, electrons in the cells become charged, creating a current that is stored in deep-cycle batteries. When electricity is needed, the stored power is passed through an inverter to change the DC to AC, which can then be used to power various household appliances or connected to the grid for net metering.

Other than providing you cheap, clean renewable power, solar electric panels have become affordable and simple enough for anyone to install at home. In fact, with the right information it is possible to make your own solar power for under $200, as compared to getting a professional installation for a couple of thousand dollars.

And these are the 4 ways how to solar power your home. If your are willing to learn how to use these methods at home, you will not only be living a greener life, but you will reduce your power needs and costs, receive renewable energy tax incentives, and lower the burden on our vanishing energy sources. So take the initiative and enjoy the sun's free, clean, abundant energy now.

Pros And Cons Of Solar Energy: Revealed

By Jim Martin

Find out hidden secrets about solar energy which power companies hide from you. The power to save thousands of dollars is in YOUR hands!

Understanding solar energy and how it is generated

Solar energy, as the name itself suggests, is derived from the sun and is sourced from the radiant energy that is emitted by the sun. Solar energy thus obtained is transformed into various other useful forms of energy such as electricity, heat, light, mechanical and chemical power, and used for a most diverse range of purposes. The radiant energy is emitted through the rays of the sun which are primarily made up of radioactive waves. Of the entire amount of sun's energy incumbent on the earth's surface, the upper layers of the planet usually absorb around 70% of it through the various water bodies, landmasses and the atmosphere, while the rest is reflected back into space. Solar energy is an important alternative source of power for today's world and is finding wider acceptance everywhere with every passing day. In this respect, it is of much importance to learn about all the pros and cons of solar energy.

What are the plusses and minuses of solar energy?

Solar energy applications are multiplying rapidly as it is being used in an increasing number of areas. Apart from the widespread domestic use of solar power, it is also being used extensively in various other fields such as agriculture, architecture, urban planning, solar lighting, solar thermal, solar chemical, solar vehicles, cooking and so on. Based on the application of solar power, it can be broadly divided into two classes - active solar power and passive solar power. The former stresses the use of solar panels and photovoltaic cells to capture and convert the sun's energy into various forms of energy, while the latter is more concerned about reducing the dependence on active solar power and instead, directly use sunlight by citing buildings optimally to the sun, designing well-lit and well-illuminated spaces in the buildings and so on. Let's face it, solar energy has become inseparably intertwined with our lives. However, much remains unknown about this wonderful source of power.

Compared with the many advantages of using solar power, the disadvantages of solar energy seem few and rather trivial. Let's take a look at the pros of using solar energy first. There's hardly any doubt today about the fact that solar energy is really an excellent alternative source of energy and thanks to modern science and technology, it is now possible to tap into this vast resource and harness a part of it to put it to various uses. The best thing about solar energy is that it doesn't cost a thing, and after the initial setup costs, there are no further expenses. The natural reserve of our energy producing resources such as coal and petroleum is fast getting depleted. As a result, alternative sources of energy are being looked into with renewed enthusiasm. Moreover, this completely pollution-free, environment-friendly and 'green' source of energy is a great choice for saving the environment. Solar power also offers a great deal of flexibility and easily allows itself to be set up at very remote locations, even in satellites in space, and yet produce power with amazing efficiency. This further means that solar installations can be made in rural or remote areas for more economic and social growth. Recent advancements in solar power technology have made it possible to generate appreciable amounts of power even when the sun is not shining very brightly. To add to the convenience, the energy produced during the day can also be stored for use at night or during a dull cloudy day.

How to gain from solar energy?

No doubt, the advantages of using solar energy are many. However, in all the enthusiasm, one must not forget about the few disadvantages that it has. First, there is the issue of economy. For one thing, solar panels and solar power equipment don't come cheap. Even the barest setup and the most stripped-down solar power generator would cost you nearly a grand. Secondly, most solar systems are not sophisticated or advanced enough to keep on performing even under less than optimum circumstances. In other words, most need a steady supply of bright sunlight for an appreciable span of time. Moreover, the performance of solar power generators is still susceptible to be hampered by the presence of pollutants in the air. This is the reason why installing a solar power generator at a remote and rural locality yields more output than in the city.

Solar power brings us numerous advantages. It saves the environment, it lowers our bills, it is fully sustainable, and it is quiet and clean. That is why so many people are having them installed every day. While solar power systems have become simpler to install, easier to procure and definitely more affordable than before, it might still challenge somebody who is new to the subject with its intrinsic complications. A step-by-step guide in this respect can be really helpful. You should seriously consider getting hold of one such good guide to ensure a trouble-free installation.

Plumbers Making The Most Out Of The Current Climate

By Tal Potishman

With the current economic climate on a down turn, and the recession making an impact on household expenditure, installers may be struggling to find work. The current economic climate will be forcing homeowners to look at their daily expenditure and find ways of controlling it. They will be limiting their non-essential spending and many home owners will be viewing their purchases from a short-term rather than a long-term perspective.

Unfortunately this does have an affect on the grand scheme of things and a person is less likely to spend their hard earned cash on servicing their boiler. They are most likely to go with the option of repairing it rather than replacing it completely.

However, do not despair as there is a way around this. If you use your knowledge tactfully, it can prove to be a very effective tool. Use your powers of persuasion. If you are able to explain the advantages of getting an annual service from both economic and safety perspectives, then the homeowner will be more likely to make an investment.

Importance of servicing the boiler

Many people automatically dismiss the idea of subscribing to an annual service for their boiler as they see it as unnecessary expenditure. However, all the professionals in the heating industry are fully aware of the necessities of keeping the boiler in good working order. They are aware that annual servicing keeps the boiler in good working order and reduces the chance of it breaking down.

Nonetheless most homeowners do not realise this and choose to take the risk of not servicing their boiler. There are safety aspects to consider also, such as carbon monoxide poisoning. This kills around 40 people every year in the UK. If you use your knowledge appropriately, you could be able to persuade the customer in upgrading.

For instance, the customer may not be aware that a high efficiency boiler can save the homeowner about a third of their fuel bills according to the Energy Saving Trust. You could go further by explaining that the customer will further be able to save if modern controls are also fitted.

If you fully explain the amount of savings the customer will be able to achieve by considering these options, you may be pleasantly surprised by the customer's reaction. Having fully explained the benefits of the amount of savings that can be achieved, the customer is more likely to make an upgrade. If you are also able to explain the carbon savings, this can also work in your favour as people are becoming more environmentally conscious.

Investing in renewable technologies

You should also explain the benefits of investing in renewable technologies. Many homeowners often hesitate in making an investment in a solar thermal system or any other form of renewable technology, mainly due to it being expensive. This is especially the case in the current climate. However, if the homeowner is made aware of the long term savings that can be made, then they may reconsider.

As an installer it is advisable to keep up with current trends in the market and to use this to your advantage. It could work massively in your favour.

Solar Power For Homes

By Madan Taban

Heating and cooling our homes places a huge stress on our natural resources. The time has come to find options that don't have a put so much stress on our world. There are practical methods to generate electric power for our houses that exploit the earth's replaceable sources. Using solar electricity for houses is a way to generate this electricity that takes advantage of clean, cheap energy.

Solar electricity panels come in both flexible and firm formats. The flexible ones are best for light, intermittent usage and aren't expensive. Solar energy panels are made from photovoltaic cells. Solar cells are made from the same kinds of semiconductor materials, utilized in the electronics industry. For solar cells, a thin semiconductor wafer is treated to form an electrical field, positive on one side and negative on the other. Solar cells convert solar light energy into electricity by the photovoltaic effect. Photo means light and voltaic means electricity.

One of the finest things about having solar power for houses is that at least in the day time, the sun's energy is always working to make electricity, even if it's a cloudy day. You may think solar electricity will not work unless it's bright all the time. That is just not true. It's correct that there will be less electricity on a cloudy day, the panels will still make electricity. All you've got to do is set up something to store the electricity for night and cloudy days.

Solar energy panels just may be the correct choice for you. Solar electricity for homes can cost quite a lot and you want to know if the investment will pay off in the end. Solar electricity panels are hands down the most efficient and cost-efficient energy alternative that we are able to use right now to deal with the rising price of electricity. If you need to understand how to lower your energy costs each month then considering putting up a solar energy panel can be one of the first steps you take in reducing energy costs.

Spending thousands of bucks now to save thousands on your future electricity bills may be a problem for you. If this is an issue, you could always start small. Instead of completely converting over, simply add a small system to your place. You should purchase a do it yourself kit on the internet that will show you the best way to build a solar energy panel to start.

Building your own panels can be a really enjoyable project that isn't just very doable, it's also very inexpensive. Carefully thought out planning of your purchases can result in your paying less than $200 for your materials, which is a minute outlay for the rewards that you will reap from the savings. Building and installing these alternative power sources can be equal to getting a pay raise at work. This is how much can be saved with home-made solar cells.

Economic Skip Hire

By Lily McKinnon Smith

The way we dispose of our waste material is becoming more and more of a concern as our impact on the planet worsens. Not too long ago it was common practice to simply collect up all your waste, take it to a landfill site and dump it there, however with the need to sustain the planets natural resources, we must now be more careful about what we do with our wastage.

Dumping all of our waste into a large hole in the ground will no longer suffice as a sustainable method of waste removal, and so the need to recycle grows. There is only so much of each natural resource on the planet and as they begin to dwindle, recycling what we use becomes extremely important.

If you need a skip for clearing our your house, or for a building site, or for any purpose really, it will be worth while to use a company that will recycle your waste for you when you are finished using it. Such skip hire companies will take your skip away when its full and separate all of the materials such as wood, glass earth, bricks etc. and then store them for future recycling.

These skip companies will make money from selling these materials and so you will not face an extra charge for this service. The result is that you pay the same as you would for a traditional skip company, but your waste gets reused instead of, quite literally, going to waste. Recycling is big business and will only get bigger; it is good to know that you've done your bit for the planet rather than adding to our affect.

Most families in the western world are used to separating their household waste for recycling, however it would not be practice or reasonable for them to have to separate their heavy duty waste as well, and so it is down to the better skip hire companies to take care of it for them.

UK Climate Legislation is a Model

By Daniel Stouffer

Since the dawn of the industrial era, which we are led to believe was 1750, we have had a seemingly never ending thirst for energy and products produced through the use of fossil fuels. Over the centuries we were not aware of the damage that we were causing and it has been only in relatively recent times that we have come to terms with the significant and threatening effects that we have caused to our environment.

The principal emitters of dangerous greenhouse gases have been identified under the new UK climate legislation which aims to take on the problem of climate change head on. These entities must take significant steps to reduce the large amounts of carbon dioxide emissions or face financial penalties appropriately.

It would be nice to think that we are all able to take responsibility for our actions and change accordingly. We could see that excess consumption has far-reaching consequences and do something about it for the good of future generations. However, corporations are always driven ultimately by profits, even though many are making considerable attempts to embrace environmental issues. Politicians have introduced UK climate legislation to ensure that these thoughts are turned into actions.

Ultimately, the success or failure of a company is dictated by powerful market forces. This has not really had an effect on carbon emissions to this point, but UK climate legislation changes all of that. Companies now face a cap on the amount of emissions that they are responsible for before penalties are imposed.

By introducing a value for carbon and creating a commodity accordingly, UK climate legislation will over the course of time have a significant effect on the amount of carbon that an organization may purchase. As such, efficiencies must be achieved to ensure that an enterprise does not rely so much upon fossil fuels and engages other economies to cut down on its carbon bill.

If we look into the future, it seems clear that a majority of forward thinking countries will adopt some kind of cap and trade scheme as the consequences of inaction are becoming increasingly and more vividly obvious to us on a daily basis.

UK climate legislation is among the first to specify mandatory participation by major organizations within its borders, even though considerable opposition pointed to trading barriers and obstacles and the creation of additional difficulties within the global or international trading arena.

The new administration of the United States is watching the UK climate legislation with a very keen interest and has indicated that it supports the concept. Many other interested parties will be watching the Carbon Reduction Commitment, the child of the British Climate Change Act of 2008 to see how it unfolds.

What You Should Know about Solar Energy Jobs

By Jessica H. Skymore

The solar energy jobs have skyrocketed by a 25% margin since 2001. The need for alternative energy has spread world wide and the availability of alternative energy jobs have been coinciding with these needs. By 2010 many in the industry expect the needs to increase to incorporate 100,000 new jobs. This is good news for the environment as well as for those seeking the green employment that contributes positive energy to the world.

Over the next few years there is no doubt that the increase in alternative energy jobs will continue to not just rise, but leap high off the percentages page. We need immediate solar energy resources to implement and we need continuing research and development to make solar power more accessible to everyone. Well placed solar energy sources can help increase the effectiveness of the coastal wind turbine efforts. Together the two alternative energy sources can reduce the country's emissions output by a significant margin.

As alternative energy jobs go, solar energy jobs are one of the most readily available. It is speculated that the job market will continue to grow for several more years. Without the appropriate research and the access to qualified construction, solar energy will be delayed in its implementation all over the United States. Joining the wind turbine industry, solar panels are expected to become one of the most common home improvements within the next 15 years.

While we can definitely be proud of the increase in solar energy jobs throughout the United States, our increase has yet to match the increase of many European countries. They are outperforming us on available solar energy job availability as well as wind turbine construction. The competitive nature of the figures has nothing to do with rivalry, but a hands on study of how we have progressed in alternative energy jobs. While our efforts are more than reasonable for such a short period of time, we need a stronger movement to get things moving in the right direction.

As we move toward rearranging the energy sources that we use to make them more Earth friendly there will be a chronic growth in clean energy jobs. Science and practical application are coming together to change the fate of the planet and there are openings for qualified candidates.

There is no doubt that solar power can take away a huge dependence on traditional oil and gas resources, which decreases political stress while increasing eco friendly practices. The progress through this single generation toward solar power is really quite amazing.

In order to land one of the many solar energy jobs that are open, you might want to consider the potential for being an intern or apprentice for a period of two to four years. This will help you develop skills as well as experience. Skills and experience will put you ahead of almost every graduate when it is time to apply for a job.

If you are willing to relocate you increase your chances of being taken on before you finish your education. The down side to this as you have to transfer and may lose some credits along the way. However, finding green employers before you finish school is like being hand picked into a position pined for by thousands.

Plumbers Making The Most Out Of The Current Climate

By Tal Potishman

With the current recession kicking in and making an impact on household expenditure, it is easy to see why installers may be struggling to find work. Many homeowners will be looking at their daily expenditure and finding ways of cutting down on unnecessary costs. In addition, most homeowners when making a purchase often tend to view it from a short-term perspective rather than a long-term perspective.

Unfortunately this also has an impact on finer details such as getting an annual service for the boiler. If the boiler does happen to break down, the homeowner is more likely to have it repaired rather than buying a whole new boiler.

Although it may seem difficult at first, there is a way around this. If you use your knowledge to your disposal, it could prove to be quite an effective tool. You should use your powers of persuasion in convincing the customer about the positives of making an upgrade or subscribing to an annual service. If for instance, the customer is made aware of not just the economic side of getting an annual service but also the safety side, they will be more likely to make an investment.

The value of servicing

Many people do not consider getting an annual service for their boiler. This tends to be because they see it as unnecessary. Nevertheless most installers are fully aware of the importance surrounding regular maintenance of the boiler. Regular maintenance ensures that the boiler stays in good working order and reduces the chance of it breaking down.

If you are also able to explain the carbon savings, this can also work in your favour as people are becoming more environmentally conscious.

Investment in renewable technologies

Investing in renewable technologies should also be considered as an option. Renewable technologies do come across as expensive, however once their long-term benefits are realised, they seem like quite an attractive option.

Finally, it is best not to feel too pessimistic about the current climate and how it may be affecting your work. The best tool at your disposal is your knowledge. Use it wisely.

Nuclear Power - Is It As Green As They Say It Is?

By Tim McDonald

Although nuclear power is efficient and responsible for about 25% of the world's electricity production, it is flawed in many respects:

1 - It is expensive:

Nuclear power plants are definitely not a cheap investment. At around six to twelve billion dollars each - just for installation - taxpayers have subsidized billions of dollars to keep the utilities afloat. This money could have been invested in cleaner renewable energies instead.

2 - Does not aid global warming:

Nuclear is seen as a relatively clean alternative energy. But that is complete nonsense! While the reactor may not emit green-house gases, the rest of the activities certainly do. How do you think the uranium is mined and transported? How do you think the reactor was built? And all the building material transported? That's right - trucks and machines - all of which emit carbon into the air.

What's more is these reactors take years to be fully operational - wasting precious time in our fight against global warming. We could have used that time and money more wisely, such as improved research and development in solar and wind power.

3 - What happens to all that radioactive waste?

20 to 30 tonnes of highly radioactive waste is produced by just one nuclear plant every year. This excludes what the authorities like to call "low" level radioactive waste produced in the rest of the supply chain - such as during the enrichment process.

4 - Any accident would be catastrophic:

Nuclear power plants are not as safe as they are said to be. They could easily be attacked and even if an accident happened, there are no realistic evacuation measures in place. Furthermore, thanks to the Price-Anderson Act, a utility company is liable for only $10.8 billion as opposed to the real potential damage of $600 billion! Who will be picking up the rest of the bill? The working-class taxpayers - that's who!

5 - Low-level radiation causes cancer:

Nuclear supporters are completely wrong in believing that radiation levels near reactors are "safe". What they do not know is that these level are only "safe" for healthy, white men. Children, who are more prone to cancer from radiation, are not even considered.

We have also been misled about how safe it really is to "dispose" of all this radioactive waste. There is no scientific proof to show where the safest place to dump the waste is. And more nuclear plants would make the problem worse. There are only so many "safe" storage facilities. Any additional waste would have to be either burned or dumped in landfills - leading to air and water pollution.

6 - Nuclear technology sets the stage for atomic weapons:

A country's national security always feels at threat when extremist countries start harnessing nuclear power. Just think about Israel attacking Syria's so-called nuclear site back in 2007, and how uneasy America was when Iran was developing its own nuclear program. Nuclear power sets the stage for the production of atomic bombs, so as long the number of reactors increases, the likelihood of terrorists getting their hands on nuclear weapons increases.

7 - There are greener energy solutions:

There already so many better, cheaper, "greener' ways to produce electricity today, that we are surprised nuclear power is still invested in so heavily. Why not spend those billions of dollars building more wind farms and solar power stations instead, and invest more in the technological advancement of these renewable energies?

But while we wait, it is possible to start harnessing renewable energy at home. What's more is, it does not cost very much and is rather simple to implement. Various solar and wind power guides have already become available, which you can see in our reviews section.

The Types of Green Energy?

By Jerry Dyess

What do you picture in your mind when someone mentions "green energy"? Miles and miles of windmills on rolling green hills or in a frozen wasteland in the Arctic or the solar panels occasionally seen on the roofs of houses? You may think of green energy as undeveloped and expensive to obtain and not a viable option to consider. The truth is green is not a new concept and does not have to cost a lot of money.

A renewable energy source that is safe for the environment and does not emit harmful emissions is considered green energy. These energy sources include more than just wind or solar energy; they also include hydroelectric and geothermal power. Let us look at these sources of energy and why they are considered green energy.

Solar energy is still being developed; it is probably the most talked about form of green power. In the future, many believe we will be producing solar power with plastic wrap; the fact is they have developed a form of plastic wrap that will collect solar rays for producing power. Solar power is still not ready for widespread use and is considered too expensive and difficult to take care by the average person. In years to come solar power will prove to be a good option for alternative energy.

Wind power is one of the oldest forms of green energy. When we think of energy today, we normally think of electric power. The fact is any type of force that creates energy to move something is considered an energy force; it does not necessarily have to produce electric. Windmills were used years ago to pump water from wells and other uses. These early windmills are quite crude when prepared to the modern wind turbines in use today. If you live in an area with a lot of wind a wind turbine is an effective way to produce electricity. Texas has a huge wind farm; it is the biggest in the country and effectively produces green power for people in Texas.

Geothermal energy is a little more complicated. While places like Iceland and Wyoming have volcanic activity below their surface to provide steam and pressure, passive geothermal energy can actually be used on a worldwide level. How much energy do we use each year heating and cooling buildings? The temperature below the ground is a constant 65 degrees F and by tapping into that with thermal rods, we can keep our buildings at that same temperature, never having to heat or cool from a greater extreme than that.

Hydroelectric power may or may not be green depending on the circumstances. A small hydro plant is considered green, as it will not disturb the balance of nature, as they do not need to make changes to the water or the landscape to operate. A large plant on the other hand needs to create a large body of water by flooding an area in order to run the hydro plant. These are not considered green as they change the face of the land for years to come.

There are different forms of energy that are green and not used, as they were never developed. You will not need to pay as much money to the electric company if you have your own source of green power operating in your home. You can still stay connected to the light company and if your green power fails for any reason, you will still have power. This will help the earth stay cleaner in years to come.

What's Important About Solar Power Home Panels

By Jacob Stone

The United States has one impressive national grid for the transmission of power. The problem is that generating and transmitting power this way is by no means an inexpensive venture to keep up with. Solar panels are expensive to acquire the first time, but they cost next to nothing to maintain. As such they are cheaper and safer to have overall.

When you have done extensive research on Solar Energy, you will find that you need to have solar panels otherwise you would waste most of the incoming energy without corresponding results. You just need to get the solar panels so that you can be part of those reaching into the limitless and inevitable future.

When you buy you some solar power home panels, you might want to acquaint yourself with the manufacturer's manual before you get to fiddling around with it. With what you spent getting them, you don't want to have to buy another one too soon, do you? But that might be just what happens if you go and damage it, you know.

There are several solar panel firms in the United States today, but they all work almost the same principle. That principle is what you want to get a hang on before you buy your solar panel. It might be the only way you will ever enjoy owning the device.

The world is going green, what with global warming and all that. Now everyone needs to find a way to limit how much fallout they release into the environment, and you don't want to be left behind. What you need is to get you a couple of solar panels to help with the energy issues that are teeming all around you. You cannot say you haven't noticed. It only makes logical sense to do your part since it will save you money in the long haul

Learn About Solar Power And Its Applications

By Jim Martin

Understand the workings of solar power and understand how it can help us by coming in use in various energy generating applications.

Understanding solar power and also learning how it works

This is the time when alternative is going mainstream. At least, in the energy field. Let me explain. The rapid decrement in the planet's reserve of natural resources and fossil fuels, due to man's reckless behavior and rising needs for more and more energy, is endangering the earth's future. The ecological and environmental impact could be eventually disastrous. But mankind needs various forms of energy in order to survive. Heat and light are among the most fundamental ones of these. It is not surprising, therefore, that much of our finances are spent towards ensuring the regular supply of these. This concern has necessitated the search for alternative means of producing energy. The need of the hour is to produce abundant quantity of 'green', renewable and low-cost energy in order to stop putting excessive strain on or natural resources. The time to discover the power of solar power is now. Let's delve deeper.

How can solar power come to our help?

The sun is the ultimate source of energy for the planet. The sun is a gigantic storehouse of unfathomable energy and has countless benefits, some obvious and some that are less apparent. In fact, mankind has always been benefited by the sun in many ways from the earliest of times and is continuing to receive its goodness every day even now. No other source of power save solar energy offers so much goodness without causing any harm to us or the environment that we live in. Thanks to modern science and technology, we now have many sophisticated and ingenious means of capturing solar energy for use in various applications. Devices like photovoltaic cells are implemented for converting solar power into electricity. Other modern equipment that get their power from the sun include solar chimney, solar cells, solar water heaters, solar thermal devices and so on. All these devices use solar radiation for their operation and offer a degree of economy and convenience that is simply unmatched. However, the actual performance of these applications may vary greatly depending on a number of incumbent factors.

To cut a long story short, solar technology can be broadly categorized into two main types - active and passive. The basis of this classification is the way solar radiation is captured, converted and distributed. The various solar devices already mentioned earlier fall under the active solar technology category as they involve the direct conversion of solar radiation into the required form of energy. Passive solar technology on the other hand, include the use of thermal and solar materials and involves designing buildings and spaces with prime and proper air circulation and ample exposure to sunlight. Active solar technologies encourage the production of solar energy while passive solar technologies lessen our dependence on non-solar power. However, no matter whether you are looking at the active kind or the passive kind, both the forms of solar technologies serve the purpose of increasing solar power conservation. In all frankness, no other means of generating power save solar power helps us so much in preserving and protecting our environment.

The applications of solar power

Using solar panels is one of the best alternative means of getting energy that we need on a daily basis. Today, solar power is used in a most diverse range of applications and is used far and wide by the entire world. The list of the many uses of solar power starts with the contribution of solar energy in architecture and urban planning that emphasize features like orientating buildings towards the sun, adopting selective shading, compacting proportion and so on. All these factors, when carefully matched with the corresponding climate and environment of a particular area, can lead to the development of well-lit spaces.

The list of solar applications continues with its use in agriculture. The power of the sun has along been used by farmers everywhere to optimize and improve the productivity of crops. Techniques like fruit walls and sloping walls have been practiced to enhance solar energy collection and improve crop yields. Other applications of solar power in agriculture include powering water pumps, drying crops, and more. Greenhouse is another technology applied for the specialty crops that are not really suited to the local climatic conditions and require year-round heat to reap well. Yet another significant role of solar power is in the domestic field including technologies like daylighting, solar thermals, water-heaters and cooking. Photovoltaic cells and solar panels are implemented to convert sunlight into electricity. The list thus goes on with numerous applications of solar energy in our daily lives as well as specialized fields like chemistry labs where sunlight is converted into chemical energy. Some rare chemical reactions require solar energy to be triggered. Such reactions can be broadly divided into thermo-chemical and photo-chemical reactions depending upon how solar energy is used in the process. Finally, there's the big economical advantage of using solar energy which is probably the cheapest source of energy!

Installing a solar energy panel at home is one of the best decisions you will ever take. Not only will you be happy to watch your energy costs go down radically, but will also be glad to know that you are doing your bit for the environment, and ensuring a greener tomorrow for your children. The best thing about solar technology is that it can be realized with even the simplest of means. Building your very own solar system (and thereby bypassing the usual high expenses of a commercially available installation) is very much possible. A step-by-step guide, which clearly walks you through all the necessary steps, can prove to be really useful in this regard, especially if you are new to solar energy.

Solar Energy For Your Home - The Initial Outlay Is Expensive

By Bob Hobson

Yes solar energy for your home is very expensive but if you compare what you spend every month on electricity the cost will even out due to your saving. Residential homes are rearing towards solar power and realizing that eventually we will have no more resources available to supply the full load of electricity needed.

Electricity is becoming a luxury due to price hikes not only in the USA but globally. We are also depleting our coal resources. The beauty of solar heating is that after installation cost heat is free. As long as the sun shines you don't pay electricity.

Over the years the production of solar energy cells have increased radically due to the demand and the price of installation have dropped, so you will be able to find a really affordable deal. Literally everywhere you go you will notice homes that have solar energy. I personally have noted installation in the famous Kruger National Park and also in Botswana's parks.

After you have done some reading and research you can then decide whether you can do this yourself or maybe you need a contractor to do the job. As well as installing solar energy to the inside of your home you can also install outside. You can use solar energy to heat your pool, as well as replace the geyser. Solar energy will provide both heat and cold which is a bonus in Africa.

Solar power can operate independently and supply your home with a continuous energy supply. The only time you would have a problem is when there is a storm or in some countries where natural disasters occur, you would then end up with a weak and limited supply of energy.

The panels are installed either on the south facing side or the north facing side of your home. This depends where in the world you are residing. They are mounted on a swivel rack which allows the panel to catch the sun rays in all directions. Similar to the weather cock method.

It has been noted that in some countries that after installing a solar energy system the value of your home will immediately increase and in some cases tax exemption is granted to the owners. This is a bonus due to the inflation and cost of housing in these deflating times. Houses that have the system have a better change of selling as the new owner won't have high electricity bills to pay.

Solar energy is not only important to our homes but to everything that exists on the planet. We will save the natural resources like coal and natural gas supplies in the long term. And having solar energy in the home ensures that you can still cook and bake or watch your TV without interruption or spend hours with no electricity in the long term due to load shedding. We are also helping to eliminate toxic pollutants, and make the environment safer for future generations to come.

Electricity - Our Everyday Power Source

By Jerry Dyess

What is electricity? It is something that defines a lot of different effects and usually there are just two terms in particular. These are electric charge and electric current. The term charge is a way to define the properties of specific subatomic particles. Atoms can actually be composed of neutrons, protons, and even electrons, and protons and electrons are able to carry a charge, while protons are positive energy. Usually it's balanced, but there is a chance that there will be too many or even not enough electrons in an atom, and that will give the net positive or negative charge. Thus giving birth to the ion! This is what makes up an electric charge. Electric current is a charge that is moving.

These are the two electric definitions that you need to concern yourself with. No doubt you'll be dealing with one or the other every day. The thing that you really need to worry about is the delivery system. This is normally sent through outlets that interact with three pronged plugs. Two of those prongs create a circuit with both positive and negative. Though the electricity is sent through the device it tends to lose a lot of charge on the way.

The battery is an electrochemical device. It uses science and chemistry to make electricity. Essentially, every single battery has these features: anode, cathode, and electrolyte. These are things that are capable of producing a charge. Naturally the electrodes are not able to touch each other directly lest they cause a short circuit. Because of this fact they're indirectly connected by the electrolyte.

There is also a lot of misunderstanding about the terms used to measure electricity, with many people thinking volts describes everything. In reality there are three measurements: volts, watts, and amps. A good way to imagine how the three measurements work is to think of a faucet that has been connected to a washing machine. The voltage is the water pressure of the pipes leading to the faucet. Amps are a measurement of the gallons per minute that flow out of the faucet when it is turned on. Watts describe how much water the washing machine needs to actually work. Therefore it is watts that describes how much power is consumed, not volts. Volts actually measure how fast current can potentially be delivered.

That pretty much covers all that you need to know regarding electricity and the way that it is used. Try to remember these things when you're comparing batteries, using light bulbs, or even wiring a house for lighting. Knowing the terms and knowing how everything works will definitely help you out when you're trying to install something or even work with a currently existing electrical system. You can be assured of that, whether you're working with home electricity or business electricity.

The 1st Law of Personal Energy - You Have Four Sources Of Energy

By Gerry Geneva

Plato once said that a physician can't properly treat a disease until he/she has had it. There is a bit of truth to that. I find that it is especially true when you talk about adrenal fatigue or chronic fatigue. I work with people all the time who are always exhausted, yet they don't know what is wrong. After consulting with their doctor they don't feel any better because all the doctor recommended is eat better or exercise more. Although this advice is meaningful in some cases, a lot of the time is just not that helpful.

I've heard this story countless times. I myself struggled with the same thing. I was utterly exhausted all the time and I just couldn't figure out what was going on. That is, until I learned a few things about energy that completely changed my outlook.

Law #1 - Energy is more than just your physical body. Energy is all around us and we as energy beings draw energy from different modalities.

Just think for a moment about the varying situations you've experienced in which you have felt a surge of energy enter into your body.

For instance, do you remember when your college team won the championship game?

For you parents, how did you feel when you saw your little boy or girl for the first time?

Many relationships are filled with "spark" and "chemistry" leading to feelings of excitement and anticipation.

What about when you landed that big promotion?

Situations can create within us feelings of extreme energy and elation. And what's interesting is it may have had nothing to do with the amount of sleep you got the night before, or that you exercised the day before. You simply got energized from different modalities.

My point is, energy is more than just physical (i.e. eat better, get more sleep, get some exercise). We experience energy from all 4 areas of our being: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. If we want to get to the highest level of personal energy for ourselves, we need to focus on all 4 sources of energynot just the physical.

Stop Air Leaks And Make Your Home More Energy Efficient

By Jerry C Dyess Jr.

Summary: There are a lot of different spots where air gets into or out of our homes. You can fix many of these leaks yourself. It's easy, fun and will save you money as soon as you stop these leaks.

For some of these problem areas, better insulation or more energy efficient windows or doors may yield significant savings. But, these can be costly. Instead, why not take a few simple steps to eliminate those pesky air leaks?

Recaulking your doors and windows can prevent some air and water leaks. Remove the old caulk first - a putty knife or window scraper work well here; a screwdriver also works for stubborn caulk, but make sure not to gouge the woodwork in the process. Clean the window or door frame using rubbing alcohol afterwards to make sure the new caulk will stick well. Now, caulk the door or window, making sure to push the bead to get caulk into all of those little gaps. Remember not to caulk your window weep holes though unless you plan to replace them very soon! The best time to caulk is in spring and fall, when temperatures range between 50 and 70.

The type of caulk you use is really up to you, but it is best to use one which is light colored and paintable.

The same principle applies to skylights and any other place where there may be air leaks. For instance, where electrical lines, phone lines or air ducts enter your home are all worth investigating and if needed, recaulking. You may want to use cover plates to cover these areas after caulking. While these too will need to be sealed, they look a lot better than a large caulked area.

You can also caulk skylights as well as the spots where air ducts, phone lines and electrical cables enter your home: basically, anywhere you have an air leak. After caulking these areas, you may want to cover them with a plate. The plate also needs to be sealed after installation, but this looks much better than a lot of caulk!

Better still us to use an aerosol sealer to seal your ductwork; these sealants collect wherever there is a leak and stop air leaks. It's a much easier thing than going around your home with a roll of duct tape and it can seal leaks you could never reach.

Finally, address weather stripping along the bottom of doors and windows. This can become brittle and/or damaged over time. Sometimes you can simply slide in a replacement piece. At other times you may have to tip out the window or remove the door from its hinges and then physically remove and replace the entire weather stripping unit.

Last of all, leaks around electrical outlets and switches can be sealed. Especially on outside walls, these are common places for air leaks. Before you get started, shut off the electricity. Remove the switch plates and plug covers and feel for air leaks in the space. You can cover these leaks with foam inserts or if desired, a small piece of insulation or spray foam sealant. Once you've applied this and it is set, check for leaks again.

These are all easy projects which can stop air leaks, make your home more energy efficient and save you quite a lot of money in energy bills. Best of all, the savings begin as soon as you complete these easy projects; you may wonder why on earth you didn't do these projects sooner!

Natural Resources - Renewable Energy

By John Roberts

Simply put, renewable energy is the energy we use that comes from natural resources. These resources are replenished naturally making them ideal for energy consumption considering the massive amounts of energy consumed on a daily basis.

Biomass: Biomass is made of fully organic material like plant and animal matter. Wood, garbage and manure are all examples of this type of energy. It is considered renewable because trees and plants can always be regrown. When you burn wood it releases heat; this is considered biomass energy.

Hydropower: The energy produced from water is known as hydropower, sometimes called hydroelectric. Strong currents in water produce the electricity so the swifter the current the more that is produced. People have used hydropower for a long time, dating back to times when it was used to turn wheels to help grind grains for flour and cornmeal production.

Geothermal: Geothermal energy is the energy generated by the radioactive decay in the Earth's core. This is a continuous process there for it is consider a renewable energy source. Some people use this energy to heat their homes by digging deep in to the Earth to capture pools of warm water heated by this energy then pump them through their homes.

Wind: Wind energy is another source that has been around for a long time. Just drive through California and look at all the wind turbines in the fields. There will be wind as long as we have sunshine since this is what creates it. Wind turns large paddles that are connected to electric producing turbines. When they turn the turbines spin as well and electricity is generated.

The few examples of renewable energy sources listed here are not the only ways we are able to gather renewable energy. In fact, scientists are working every day to discover new sources and ways we can harvest those sources. The possibilities are almost endless!

How A Home Solar Energy System Can Save You Money

By Bob Hobson

You may be asking yourself how a home solar energy system can benefit you and your home. Hopefully when you have finished reading you will have the answers and be wondering why you did not consider it earlier. Having a solar energy system fitted will not only be one step forward in preserving the environment, but it will also be able to bring your energy bills down therefore saving you money.

With the amount of fossil fuels remaining we will run out of the energy we use now and will have to look for alternative methods in order to create electricity. The way energy is currently produced is mainly from fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are created believe it or not originally from the suns power.

The reason the sun has played such a big part is because of the energy in which plants need to survive. As well as needing water the sun also provides plants with food by a process called photosynthesis. After the plant has wilted and died it has not finished it's journey, as after a lot of years the plants remains are what becomes fossil fuel.

You may be asking yourself now why it is that solar power can save you so much money if it is such a big part in the making of fossil fuels, and the reason is this. The sun will give you energy directly from its heat or light, where as with fossil fuels people have to be paid to source them and dig them up as well as to be able to convert them to the energy we take for granted the energy companies have to pay their workers too. If only we could bypass this? Well we can, this is what solar power is all about.

The use of solar thermal energy is created by having solar panels installed onto the roof of your house or wherever they can soak in the suns energy. The suns heat is then used to heat the water you need to use in the house and this could save you the cost you have to pay for heating your radiator or taking baths.

Another method is photovoltaic, which works by using the suns energy and then being able to turn it cleverly into electric which we use for many modern day appliances, even the computer or laptop that you are now using to read this article.

A passive solar energy system will use the suns direct light to heat a water system, but you will find that as there is no need for a pump to circulate the water you will not need to use any other energy source.

An active solar energy system will need you to use an extra kind of energy source as they have to have a device within them so that hey can make the most of the sunlight and ensure that the the panels and our home benefit from any available sunlight.

Which ever kind of system you choose you can be sure that you will save money on your bills, hopefully this article has shown you how you can benefit from not using fossil fuels as much which will mean that they will last a lot longer for generations to come.

The 2nd Law of Personal Energy - Energy Has a Rhythm

By Gerry Geneva

Life, like energy has a cycle. The trick is to identify these rhythms and maximize them if you want to have sustainable energy. Let me explain.

During the course of a normal workday, we expend energy in order to get work done. We also take breaks to refuel, recharge, etc. Think about how you feel if you skip lunch. Whenever you try to go against your natural cycle (which eating is part of) you are moving away from energy and towards exhaustion.

Listen to your body. It comes pre-programmed to tell you when you need rest and when you don't.

All of us are familiar with the Circadian rhythm whether we know its name or not. It's the biological clock inside of us that dictates sleep and awake time. The average person sleeps for somewhere around 8 hours per night and then has about 16 hours of awake time.

But what most people are not familiar with is the Ultradian rhythm. This is another biological clock within us but this one controls a different cycle. The Ultradian rhythm is about every 90-120 minutes, it varies depending on several factors. What it controls though is the level of energy you feel. Have you ever noticed that every 90-120 minutes or so you start to feel a little tired, hungry, bored, unable to concentrate, and maybe even a little anxious. Your Ultradian rhythm is responsible for that and its telling you that you need a break.

The ideal break would be that you get what's called "clean breaks", where you completely disconnect from what it is you were doing. Maybe we go and talk about the football game last night, or you call a friend and talk about anything but work. You should also eat a light snack such as a carrot or an apple. Likely you feel a little thirsty during this time and your body needs to be replenished with some water.

A simple look into your habits will tell if you are paying attention to this biological rhythm. Remember, going against Mother Nature is always a recipe for disaster. Yet this is what most of us does. We go to the break room and get our second or third cup of coffee in an attempt to stimulate our energy. We grab a soda, or get a sugary snack from the vending machine. What we forget is that we are setting ourselves up for a crash which inevitably occurs a couple of hours later and we will have even less energy that when we ingested these stimulants.

All you need to do is Google "side effects of caffeine and sugar" to get more details on what these chemicals do to your overall health and specifically your energy. I won't go into it here because there is a lot of information out there about it already. But just know that it is going against Mother Nature by trying to prop up your energy by ingesting unnatural stimulants, and there are always consequences to that.

In conclusion we all would do better to become more mindful of both our Circadian rhythm as well as our Ultradian rhythm. Both have a purpose. Here are some actionable suggestions to get you on your way to higher energy: buy a refillable water bottle, take some light and healthy snacks to work with you, and set the timer on your computer, cell phone, or watch to remind you to take a break every 90-120 minutes. These are very easy steps to get you on the road to increasing your energy levels.

UK Climate Legislation Means Business

By Daniel Stouffer

For many centuries now, since the dawn of the industrial age in 1750, as a society we have been almost totally reliant on the burning of fossil fuels to create the necessary energy and associated products that we need to survive. Sadly, however, this rampant production has had a significantly negative effect on our environment, something that we have only become aware of in relatively recent times.

The principal emitters of dangerous greenhouse gases have been identified under the new UK climate legislation which aims to take on the problem of climate change head on. These entities must take significant steps to reduce the large amounts of carbon dioxide emissions or face financial penalties appropriately.

While in an ideal world, each one of us would realize that the consequences of consumption are far-reaching and could have a devastating effect on our future generations, in reality politicians realize that this is not sufficient to make us change our ways. Corporate citizens are essentially driven by revenues and profits, although they may give relatively significant attention to environmental concerns. UK climate legislation recognizes that intent is not enough and must be backed up by hard action.

In the modern world, market forces are invariably used to dictate whether an organization is successful and continues to operate. The UK climate legislation recently introduced reasons that these market forces will now force organizations to be environmentally aware as well, by imposing a cap on the amount of carbon emissions that they can produce without penalty.

We have gone too far with out action and understand that we need to play catch-up in this respect. Therefore it is likely that the majority of advanced countries will adopt a "cap and trade" program of some kind as the consequences are serious.

Major organizations became liable to participate in the new UK climate legislation, even though opponents specified that such mandatory imposition would create unnecessary barriers to international trade and considerable difficulties in the global arena for those concerned.

The new administration of the United States is watching the UK climate legislation with a very keen interest and has indicated that it supports the concept. Many other interested parties will be watching the Carbon Reduction Commitment, the child of the British Climate Change Act of 2008 to see how it unfolds.

What Is Activated Carbon In HEPA Air Purifiers?

By Harry Pinello

Activated carbon in HEPA air purifiers may seem strange to you, unless you own a water purification system which uses carbon or are an aquarium hobbyist. Even so, you may not understand exactly what it is activated carbon does.

How Activated Carbon Is Used In HEPA Air Purifiers

The first time most people encounter activated carbon is in choosing HEPA air purifiers. When most customers begin searching for air purifiers, generally due to allergies or asthma, they really have no idea how they work. As they are further educated about HEPA air purifiers, however, they will learn that odors and chemicals are the cause of the vast majority of their respiratory problems. Most quality HEPA air purifiers are designed to take care of not only allergens, but also the odors and chemicals in the air as well.

Activated Carbon Before HEPA Air Purifiers

Activated carbon has actually been around for quite a while, and though it sounds quite scientific, our ancestors have made good use of it for at least the last two centuries. Back then, they already knew of activated carbon's extraordinary absorption qualities. In the early 1900's, the stuff was produced and sold commercially in the form of a powder. At the time it was only used to remove color from sugar or taste or smell from water. Although we didn't know it at the time, that was barely the tip of what this stuff is capable of. In World War I, the military discovered that they could use activated carbon in gas masks, filtering chemical agents from the air for the soldiers. The soldiers also used it for water purification, just like their ancestors. By this point, it was also available commercially as a granular form instead of just powder, which was when it began finding uses in even more situations.

What Does "Activated" Mean?

You're probably wondering why we're referring to this carbon as "activated." Is there such a thing as non-activated carbon? Well, the heat used in "activating" the carbon is what drives out the impurities in the carbon itself. This leaves a place for the impurities in whatever it is the carbon is cleaning to reside. So activating carbon is kind of like emptying a sponge, only with head instead of pressure. After activated carbon becomes full, it can actually be reactivated by re-heating it. This is, however, not a good idea, and is considered dangerous and impractical. Non-activated carbon is basically charcoal or soot.

Are There Different Types Of Activated Carbon?

There are a variety of types of activated carbon, and it is described in a variety of ways, but generally activated carbon includes a wide range of amorphous carbon-based materials. These materials have a high degree of porosity (lots of holes) and a relatively large surface area. Basically, this means it has excellent absorbent characteristics. These absorbent characteristics are why activated carbon works so well filtering air and water both.

UK Cap and Trade - Let the Market Decide

By Daniel Stouffer

In the war against global warming and climate change, economists and politicians have long advocated the use of market forces to help us achieve efficiencies. Indeed, Pres. Obama is known to take this approach and it has been recently introduced in Great Britain, as well. The UK cap and trade scheme has been put in place to drive down domestic carbon emissions through such market forces.

The UK cap and trade scheme sets an overall limit on the amount of carbon dioxide emissions that can be released to the atmosphere. The goal of the British government is to gradually reduce this each year up until the year 2050, by which time an 80% reduction will hopefully have been achieved.

Once the government has issued an overall cap in the amount of carbon emissions, any organization that wishes to emit any carbon as a consequence of its operation will need to purchase a limited amount of allowances. The fact that there is an overall cap imposed by the government means that the UK cap and trade scheme creates a real-time value for carbon, essentially creating a commodity.

As a tonne of CO2 will retain an actual value under the UK cap and trade scheme, it follows that an enterprise will be incentivized to reduce its reliance on carbon by introducing efficiencies within its cycle. As it will rely less on carbon emissions, it may sell its unused allowances on the market, trading to other companies who may not be as efficient. In this way, market forces will eventually force a reduction in overall carbon emissions.

It has been suggested with good logic that without direct programs it will be tougher to reduce carbon emissions within an industrialized society. The United States Congress is therefore currently considering a similar version to the UK cap and trade legislation and it seems that it is only a matter of time before a similar kind of operation is put in place.

To enable the UK cap and trade scheme to work, the Carbon Reduction Commitment, as it is known, carries significant penalties for those who are unable or unwilling to comply. The largest emitters of CO2, as dictated by their recorded electricity usage, must comply and trade within the newly created markets.

There is considerable pressure on those entities that must participate in the Carbon Reduction Commitment. Not only will they need to engage with market forces accordingly, they will be hit with additional fines should they find that they need to buy additional allocations. The government has said that they will publicize performance results to consumers, which could lead to negative reactions.

Those companies that need to participate in the UK cap and trade program are actively involved in the process of registration and preparation. Although the project does not start until 2011, it was necessary for a company to look back to 2008 to determine whether it needed to take part or not.

3 Simple Tips To Getting A Rejuvenating, Energy Recharging, Rest

By Gerry Geneva

One of the most frustrating things is waking up still completely exhausted. You might have slept for 8-12 hours but are still completely depleted upon waking up. If this is happening to you more than just every once in a while, these 3 tips will help you get the most out of your sleep once more.

Develop a bedtime routine. The first thing I would recommend is developing a nighttime routine. Just as most newborn babies need to be trained to sleep, you may need the same thing. For instance, to train a newborn to get used to sleeping at a certain time, you might want to start with a bath at 6:00 everyday. After the bath you then change them into their pajamas and give them a nighttime bottle. After than you may move the baby to their room and then read them a bedtime story. Finally you put them to bed.

You can benefit from setting a deliberate and consistent nighttime Im getting ready for bed routine. One cause for your lack of energy is your body is not getting deep and relaxing sleep. 7 out of 10 times, people start seeing an immediate boost in energy as soon as they take the time to create a nighttime routine. As part of your nighttime routine, remove distractions such as TV or internet or things that may stimulate your mind and body.

Second, ditch the sugar and the caffeine. We eat way too much sugar and drink way too much caffeine as a society. There are studies that show that as part of the Starbucks generation we are running down our bodies faster and faster. Sure sugar and caffeine might provide you with some energy. Thats why we do it. However, it is very short lived and probably one of the most inefficient types of energy.

Furthermore, our cortisol rise and fall throughout the day. This is an important part of our biological rhythm. When we ingest caffeine or sugar we are artificially stimulating our bodies to produce more cortisol. While this occurrence on an occasional basis isnt all that harmful, a continued constant pressure on the adrenal glands to produced more and more cortisol can lead to a condition known as adrenal fatigue. If you develop adrenal fatigue you will severely compromise your energy levels for the long term, making it difficult for you to get rest from your sleep, as well as feel sustained and energized during the day.

The third and final tip is to clean up your bedroom. I know its a very unusual tip to increase your energy levels but stay with me. All you need to do is try it and you will start to notice a difference. Have you ever had a big mess in your living room or kitchen and finally you got fed up with it enough to clean it. Once you were done and you saw the result, how did you feel? If you paid close attention to you body at that point, you may have experienced a form of reliefstress relief.

We gain energy from our surroundings. If we are constantly in a cluttered and disorganized environment, we will feel a sense of clutter and disorganization in our lives. Especially the bedroom. Have you ever noticed how the things that are closest to you in life are the things that affect you the most? Well, the bedroom is considered to be the part of the home that is closest to a persons heart. This is where you hide all your dirty little secrets, and where you can be your innermost private self. If the bedroom is cluttered it has a real emotional impact on you whether you are aware of it or not.

Leading psychologists say that what makes a dramatic effect on us are the thoughts we have before we close our eyes and the thoughts we have first thing in the morning. You can rest assured that by clearing up the clutter in your bedroom, you are clearing up emotional stress. And that is sure to provide a nice boost in your energy levels. Just try it and pay close attention to your energy levels. Its worth it.

By developing a nighttime routine, watching the caffeine and sugar you put into your body, and by cleaning up the clutter in your lives, especially in the bedroom, you are sure to see positive personal energy flow into your life.

UK GHG Emissions Should Worry Us All

By Daniel Stouffer

We have taken a long time to listen to scientists and environmentalists about the damage that has been caused to our environment by the burning of fossil fuels and the emission of dangerous greenhouse gases. Now, UK GHG emissions are coming into particular focus as the Carbon Reduction Commitment seeks to put an economic value on carbon itself for the first time.

The British government has decided to take action in advance of any international initiatives, enacting legislation to force the largest polluters to cut back on their emissions. Up to 5,000 of the largest consumers of electricity will, from 2010, have to account for their use and be forced to buy allocations from the government accordingly. As they use energy and release gases, they will give back these allowances.

During the 1980s, the US government introduced the "cap and trade" principle as part of the "acid rain" initiative. This is now being reintroduced by the British government as part of a lofty goal to curtail UK GHG emissions significantly by the year 2050. As such, an overall cap will be placed on the total amount of emissions permissible and users will have to trade between themselves to reduce their individual carbon footprints at the same time.

UK GHG emissions only represent part of the problem worldwide, of course but it looks like individual country initiatives will be the way forward as the overall problem is addressed. Industrialized nations lead the way, although a new initiative is expected from the Copenhagen protocol in 2012.

The problem of carbon pollution can come from energy production, distribution, usage or can arise when consumers use the product or when something is recycled. The British government intends to get a good grip on the problem of UK ghg emissions over the next four decades through the introduction of the Carbon Reduction Commitment.

From across the ocean, legislators in Washington are keeping a close eye on how the Brits tackle in UK GHG emissions. This is seen as being radical legislation and the politicians in the USA may not be ready to be quite as aggressive, yet.

Those who fail to reduce their carbon emissions once the scheme gets underway will face potentially serious repercussions. In addition to the fact that they will need to purchase additional allowances according to their production over quota, they will feel adverse publicity from exposure according to a league table to be published by the government. It is likely that those who fail to reduce emissions will also not realize economies and efficiencies that big competitors will surely see.

Major companies, commerce and industry across the USA are paying particular attention to the problem of UK GHG emissions being addressed by the Carbon Reduction Commitment. Whatever happens in Britain may well be reflected within future plans in the USA.

Fat Dudes And Energy Drinks

By James Richardsen

Have you ever turned your head at a restaurant only to see a fat guy wolfing down a big burger? Did it leave you a little less excited about what you just finished ordering? Or did it make you remember the diet you "resolved" to stick to? While I often have the same response, I feel it twice as bad whenever I see anyone guzzling down and energy drink. Many marketing dollars have been spent on these energy drinks to make us think they will help us "improve performance", "look and feel better", but the truth is pretty dire.

All it takes is a quick look at the nutrition label to resolve that these drinks have absolutely no business in your body. This is especially true if you have any concern about your health and your weight.

The number one reason to stay away from energy drinks is that they contain absurd amounts of sugar. Your typical Rockstar energy drink has 102 grams of sugar in just one can. According to the USDA, the recommended daily amount of sugar you are to consume is based on the total calories you consume during the day. For instance, if you are on a 1600 calorie diet daily, you are to consume no more than 22 grams of sugar per day. Ouch! A Rockstar will put you 4 times over the recommended daily amount... and that's just for a single drink. And if you are concerned about your weight, put this equation into your head. More sugar equals more weight.

The second reason you should avoid energy drinks is because of the stimulants manufactures add to give you that "boost in energy". Typically you will find guaranine, taurine, caffeine, and/or ginseng added to these drinks, in addition to sugar. All these ingredients have been know to cause: insomnia, high blood pressure, tachycardia (rapid heart rate), difficulty breathing, seizures, anxiety, arrhythmia ( irregular heart beat ), heart palpations, and various allergic reactions. Oh yeah, did I mention that each of these stimulants is extremely addictive?

In many countries (i.e. Canada) manufactures are required to put a warning label on these types of drinks. It may surprise you to find out that Red Bull have been banned in France, Holland, and Norway among other countries because of the amount of caffeine it contains. Sadly the ban was initiated shortly after an 18 year old died from drinking 4 cans of Red Bull at a French sporting event.

The final reason to avoid energy drinks is that they put you at risk of dehydration because they are considered to be diuretics. What this means is they accelerate the rate at which urine is produced which in turn reduces the amount of water available to your body. Americans are already dangerously dehydrated as a nation as only 34% of people say that they drink the daily 64 ounces of water recommended by the USDA. Any nutritionist will tell you that 64 ounces is just a starting point and that the average person needs more water than this. Because fatigue is the first sign of dehydration, it is recommended that you monitor the amounts of fluids you are taking in if you feel chronically tired or weak. You may be interested to know that drinking more water is one of the little known quick cures for fatigue.

I can't imagine any successful athlete who needs his or her body to perform at its top level week after week would result to drinking energy drinks as a source of energy. Yet if you watch some of these energy drink commercials, that's exactly what you are lead to believe. After researching energy drinks, you'll realize that they are especially dangerous to drink if you are exercising because the combination of sweating with the diuretic effects can easily lead to severe dehydration.

I sometimes watch these energy drink commercials and laugh to myself because they lead you to believe professional athletes drink this stuff nonstop. I can't imagine Kobe Bryant guzzling an energy drink and then feeling up for the game 7 final of the championship. Digging into the research further you'll find that drinking energy drinks while exercising is especially dangerous because the combination of sweating and the fact that energy drinks are diuretics leaves you dangerously exposed to dehydration.

As a personal diet consultant and an energy expert, I wouldn't recommend energy drinks to anyone. This is only more so true if you are trying to gain more energy, become healthier, or lose weight. Instead I would recommend picking up a bottle of water, you will feel much better.

Carbon Reduction Bill -- From The UK To The USA?

By Daniel Stouffer

There have been a number of attempts to put pressure on individual corporations, producers and emitters of greenhouse gases to force curtailment. Generally, reporting of carbon emissions has been voluntary, although there is now evidence of legal initiatives including a carbon reduction bill already passed in the UK and one under consideration in the US.

The carbon reduction bill in the UK is known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment and is in the process of rollout during 2009. Companies that are affected, estimated to be 5,000 of Britain's largest carbon emitters, must get ready for registration by assessing whether they are liable by looking back to 2008 for information.

The British government moved quickly to introduce a carbon reduction bill following the passage of the Climate Change Act. Benchmarks have been set for carbon reduction dating back to the Kyoto Protocol, but this is the first time that legislation has been imposed upon businesses to comply and to actively engage in a reduction of their carbon footprint.

While the United Kingdom has moved decisively, a lot of people in the United States are wondering whether legislators in Washington will have the will to pass a similar carbon reduction bill in this country. The US House of Representatives has indicated that they wish to see something similar to the UK legislation, but the ACES Act as it is known may not survive through the Senate unscathed.

The UK government specified that the largest emitters of carbon gases use at least 6,000 Mwh of electricity per annum. This is being measured through half hourly meters and this figure is used as a trigger to prompt companies to register and participate. Several key details are still being worked out during the course of 2009 but once the initiative gets underway there will be considerable repercussions should an organization fail to perform adequately.

Could a similar carbon reduction bill be passed in the United States? The UK initiative reflects what many industrialized nations have called for, for some time. However, traditionally the USA has not been at the forefront of this movement, although the change in administration may now significantly alter things.

While they are waiting to see whether they may be impacted in the future, US organizations that fear a carbon reduction bill could now look at the Chicago Climate Exchange for a version of a voluntary carbon trading scheme. Within this market, allowances and offsets are traded on a voluntary basis, although rules must be strictly adhered to once a company has agreed to participate.

There seems no doubt that carbon reduction bills and corresponding legislation will be popping up around the world in increasing numbers from now on. There is more and more evidence pointing to a dangerous acceleration of climate change, which must be addressed.

By Ferdinand Emy

Earth Friendly Products is a company dedicated to helping the average person change their lifestyle so that they minimize the sum of damage done to the environments. By searching for environmentally safe preferences to products such as bleach, Earth Friendly Products has taken tremendous steps towards protecting the rain forests and minimizing the environments footprints left in the average home.

In order for Earth Friendly Products to be considered for manufacturing, there is a process the company goes through to insure their products are as green as possible. Before manufacturing begins, the scientists and workers demand many questions. Does gathering the materials for this product damage the rain forest? Does this product empty the habitat of endangered species? Will making this product cause pollution? If all of the answers to these questions, as well as many more, are no, then research and development of the product continues. If the answer is yes to any of these, Earth Friendly Products would not utilize the materials. This philosophy has ensured that Earth Friendly Products maintains the highest standard of quality for their products and the protection of the environment.

There Is No Waste With This "Green" Light Bulb

By Timothy Forestts

Everywhere you turn, people are talking 'green'. It is fun to watch as products and ideas continue to surface that are helping our planet become less wasteful in energy consumption. Items that we never dreamed could possibly be replaced are now slowly disappearing with new technology presenting, literally, a better light bulb.

The light bulb has been marveled ever since its presentation in 1879 by Thomas Edison. At first an alternative to using kerosene lamps, it was hard to imagine something better than a light bulb coming along. However, today the regular incandescent light bulb is one of the most energy wasting products that there is. Nonetheless, it is also the cheapest product of its kind.

Another type of lighting that gained popularity in the 1920's was fluorescent lighting and was first used in commercial buildings and garages where more light was in demand. Even though at the time it seemed good, today we know how bad it is for residential use. Some of the many drawbacks of fluorescent lighting, for starters, is the fact that it is filled with mercury. It is also sensitive to temperature extremes, intermittent flickering is common and then there is disposal.

It seems that energy consumption, sometime in the 1970's, really began to take form and thus the birth of the tungsten halogen lamp or quartz lamp. The light from this bulb is far better than the incandescent light bulb, also needs lower voltage and its life span is much longer. It is becoming more popular only recently with emphasis on energy consumption but before people were not so quick to change, in part, because of the cost.

In the 1960s the best discovery of all was made and the alternative lighting was known as LED. This is a product made of a silicon element which is able to convert electrical energy to light energy, but without any of the disadvantages that regular light types have. This type of lighting was invented by Nick Holonyak and he has received many honors for this amazing innovation.

The LED (light-emitting diode) is totally different from other light bulbs as we know them. If you've ever had an electronic device, you may notice a small red indicator light that shows whether the unit is on or off. This is a LED light. There is no heat given off, no distorted tint, no moving parts, a long life span and energy efficient.

This technology is being worked on all the time now and as a result there are bulbs being used as replacements in street lights and decorative lighting, as well as for LCD displays of flat screen televisions. Although the costs associated with this technology are high at first, the savings and other benefits outweigh that. Pretty soon all light bulbs will be replaced by the energy efficient and saving LED. This only shows that it is possible to make a better light bulb.

Small Scale Wind Energy Discovered

By Dale Green

Though we may just be starting on it and learning it, harnessing wind for energy is not a new phenomenon for the man kind. We only need to look at our history to know that this has happened before. Our ancestors have used these renewable sources of energy for water in faraway areas and even extracting the grains out of the crops.

According to the historical records, vertical wind power was used by the Egyptians to grind their wheat about 3,000 years ago. These days many companies are thinking of utilizing these kind of vertical windmills on small scales. These are particularly useful in places where the wind flow is not steady or the wind is constantly shifting direction.

The power needs of a single house hold will be sufficiently met with a three kilowatt version. Moreover, this is rather noiseless, does not need a lot of land or height. It's also environment friendly due to its unique rotation and design and does not pull in birds or bats while working.

Some of these designs are quite artistic in nature. A specific kind of model has become quite popular in the UK and can be found in different places. Charging points are being set up adjacent to the vertical towers by Mercedes Benz in collaboration with the makers of these units. This will help in generating power for a yearly mileage of about 30,000 miles for their new electric car called the Smart fortwo.

A 500 watt unit is also installed in the garage of Jay Leno along with a bigger 10kw model in his garage which measures about 17,000 square feet. Though, these days the preliminary investment and installation charges are astronomical ($20,000), slowly as the demand for these units will increase, most residential owners will be able to afford these units. Many of Jay Leno's practically applied ideas can be found at the Popular Mechanics website.

Not just targeted toward residential areas, the vertical turbine is being put to use on rooftops of hotels everywhere from London to New Zealand. Recently, a new company presented its model at the US Botanical Garden in Washington, that had been independently tested in Utah, bringing rave reviews. Still relatively new, this small (many under six feet in height) offer feasible options that many thought there would never be available to them.

Another version of the vertical windmill that is based on sailing engineering. The vanes on the turbine are covered in solar cells so together, solar and wind work as one in creating all of the power you may ever need. Patents and awards have been market for the past decade and new operations are moving worldwide. If you are sold on the idea of wind or solar but didn't want a monster of a turbine close by or your rooftop covered in expensive, heavy solar panels, this combination could work for you.

Its quite an exciting time as people are delving more into the past and understanding the ways of harnessing these renewable energy options. A lot of new inventions are taking place which can be explored in the websites based on green energy. The Germans are quite ahead of every one else when it comes to promotion of the wind energy. You don't need to compromise on anything that doesn't sound real since in the near future you will be spoilt for choices in the market.

Oxygen is a Key to Good Health

By Christian Goodman

That which does not kill us, makes us stronger. That's a great quote when wanting to lend support to someone after a negative experience. It is however, especially in my line of work, mis-leading. I believe it would be more accurate to say, That which does not kill us right away, can still kill us in little ways, every day.

Yes for those who know my personality, that's a bit dark. The point Im stressing today is that just because one hasn't suffered a major trauma such as head injury, near drowning, stroke or heart attack, it doesn't mean ones body is immune to oxygen deprivation.

Its generally accepted for each minute the brain goes without oxygen, there is a 10% increase damage caused. After 3-5 minutes however, ones chances of survival are greatly diminished.

It also depends on the type of injury. Someone who's drowning is still getting some blood to the brain as compared to someone in a choke hold that is getting no blood and therefore, NO oxygen to the brain. In a situation like that, death could occur within seconds.

Other factors such as environmental can occur, which isn't generally accepted. The effects may not be immediate or even noticed at all at first, but can cause the body to deliver reduced and/or polluted oxygen to the brain and body.

An excellent example of this would be heart disease. Known as the silent killer, damage to the heart can occur for years before it is made known, via chest pains, heart attack, etc. Keep in mind that the organs work together and when one of the major organs fails to operate at a proper level, all of the organs can suffer.

If high blood pressure has caused the heart to enlarge, this has in turn, affected the muscle and it is more than likely that the heart isn't pumping blood properly to the other organs, including the brain.

Sleep apnea could be another example. Mild sleep apnea or snoring can cause extreme tiredness and overeating " due to the fact that the body will try to get its energy from somewhere. While moderate to severe apnea can definitely cause high blood pressure and other negative health issues.

The weight increase on its own can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and other health issues, and associated psychological issues, over time.

We may disagree to what extent our earth is being polluted, I dont think anyone will disagree that pollution is occurring. This is another example and is scarier to me because barring any congenital or genetic health disorders, this is the one arena I feel I have the least control.

Like seen in some sci-fi movies, the sun doesn't have to be blocked and the earths population dwelling underground for there to be a very real adverse affect to our health caused by pollution.

This pollution affects the oxygen molecules being delivered to our brain and other vital organs. Studies now show cancers, viral infections and other diseases are occurring or exist in great quantities due to the increase population.

I want you to consider my programs, before you decide that we are fated to ill health. They are all natural, safe and most importantly, these breathing and relaxation exercises work! I have had great success with the following programs which are aimed at delivering vital oxygen to the brain and body: High Blood Pressure, Alzheimers (coming soon!),Weight Loss Breeze, Migraine and Headache Relief, Vertigo and Dizziness and Stop Snoring.

Lower Energy Prices in New York

By Choose Energy

In the middle of the nineties the government of New York made the decision that it would commit to the restructure of their electric industry. This was aimed to aid businesses and regular consumers because the rising costs of electricity were causing serious problems. Too many monopolies had been formed in the electric industry, and this simply had to be broken if reasonable prices were to be brought to the market.

Even though the deregulation process has been ongoing in the natural gas industry for years as a result of oil embargos in the 1970s, little has been done with deregulation in New York concerning electric utility operations and rates until much later, since they are much more complex in terms of operations, rate policies and distribution among various power consortiums. As a result of this, experts believe that electric utility restructuring will have a far greater impact on electricity costs charged to consumers and the manner in which operations are handled in the coming years. To understand deregulation in New York, there are a few concepts that we need to understand better.

What is a utility? It is a commodity which can be touched, or even felt, and is very important to the public. Commodities of this nature can be classified as electricity, water, and of course natural gas. Having the ability to deliver these commodities is paramount to the operation of a city. For example, power lines need to be maintained and delivered through the power grid using a meter.

Finally both the state and the federal lawmakers decided that the regulation of electricity was in the favor of the general public. In order to stop the utility companies from charging unfair prices as they had been, the government permitted individual companies to sell services without being challenged within a certain area. Naturally this meant that the company could charge whatever they wanted, and people would have to pay for it if they wanted the lights to be on in their house.

In spite of the safeguards regarding prices that the Public Service Commission had supposedly set up, there was really nothing said about the actual prices that there being charged. It was a very rare occasion when the PSC actually stepped in and tried to work out the problems that were going on. This wasn't good because it's not like the customer really had a choice in what to use for power!

The whole idea behind deregulation in New York will help a customer to select a power company. This means that they'd be able to pick any power company they want instead of the one that's been in the area for so long. There is a chance that this will allow people to save money, considering that can choose a company offering a better rate for kilowatt hours.

Regardless, there is one huge problem with the deregulation. There is still a delivery cost for the power, and that is determined by the local provider. After all, they are the ones who are forced to repair the power lines int eh service area. Due to this little loophole a customer might end up seeing delivery charges that are larger than the actual power cost. Now you have to ask whether or not it's actually cheaper to go with another power company.

It's something that's never really said in the advertisements for the alternative power companies. If you plan to go with one of these companies then you'll need to look into them and see what the deliver charge is. Sad but true, you'll just have to make sure you are getting a decent deal.

Changing To A Programmable Thermostat

By Tal Potishman

In today's current economic climate, most homeowners are struggling more than ever in trying to find ways on saving money. Many are looking to lower their energy costs and improve overall energy efficiency. Many environmental organizations are striving to get the nation to go more 'green' in their lifestyles. One of the ways in which a difference can be made that does not require a huge lifestyle adjustment is to get a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat is a great energy saver and lifestyle improver.

What is the main difference between a non-programmable and a programmable thermostat?

A programmable thermostat has the advantage of changing the set temperature at predetermined times during the day, while a non-programmable thermostat will stay at the same temperature the whole day. With a programmable thermostat you do not need to worry about adjusting its setting before leaving the house or before going to sleep.

Programmable thermostats have both the comfort factor and energy saving ability. They are good at providing comfort in the home and reducing temperature at the right time saving energy. Programmable thermostats contribute to homeowners having a more convenient lifestyle. If this appeals to you, then you may want to think about making a purchase.

A more improved Lifestyle

With a programmable thermostat you can control how you want to heat your house. For instance if you are on your way to work, you can set the temperature to be lower when you're gone and have it set to kick back an hour before you return. This way you get to save on energy while you're gone, but still have the comfort of returning to a warm home.

Saving during the winter season

The winter months tend to be the most expensive for homeowners. However, with a programmable thermostat, you can save substantially. Providing that homeowners ensure that the programmable thermostats are set properly, they can benefit from huge energy savings. In order to maximise energy savings, homeowners have been advised to turn their thermostats back 10 to 15 percent for eight hours, while away at work or asleep at night.

The Secret To Stop Being "Tired And Wired"

By Gerry Geneva

The constant barrage of stress eventually takes its toll on us. In our fast paced and hectic lives we end up exhausted and gasping for breath. It seems the old set of stress management techniques no longer works; we need to instead focus on energy management.

Our generation in particular is facing increased difficulties. That's not to say that those that came before us faced only good times. But things are quite a bit different, and because of these different challenges, we need a different set of skills to face them.

Look at technology alone. Sure it brings to us tremendous advantages, but at the same time it brings increasing stress over a constantly ringing cell phone, an unending string of emails, and the luring distraction of the internet. Even just deciding what to watch of TV can be a challenge because of the abundance of choice. These challenges are just piled on to the already existing challenges of work, school, kids, school activities, bills, etc.

The first tip to end the tired and wired feeling is to learn to work in smaller chunks of time. We are too distracted. If you get out of the "grey zone" of work, you can stop the zombie like state of just getting through the day. Let me explain.

The typical workday may start at 9:00 in the morning and end at 5:00. Often phone calls and emails start the day earlier and end the workday later. Instead of sitting down at your desk and doing a marathon through the day, you might consider breaking your day into small chucks of 90-120 minute blocks of time. Focus for 90 minutes then take a 10-15 minute break where you completely disengage. You will start to feel your energy levels surge.

The second tip is to develop rituals, particularly a nighttime bedtime ritual. Rituals get us into state through a variety of physical and mental actions. Think about a professional basketball player getting ready to step onto the court, or a concert pianist about to take the stage. What are your rituals to get you out of the "work" state and into the nighttime "I need to rest" state?

Its not surprising that we feel tired and drained all the time when our minds constantly race until the very moment we fall asleep. And then we toss and turn all night because our minds are still wrestling with the problems of the day.

If you take a moment and develop a nighttime ritual, a deliberate set of steps to instruct your body that it is now time for bed, you will notice an immediate difference. Eat a snack, read a book, listen to some soothing music, dim the lights, turn off the TV. You need to instruct your body that it is now time for rest.

Any parent knows what happens to a child that has missed its window of opportunity to get a nap in. The child may transform from an otherwise delightful and playful kid into an absolute terror. Often they become very cranky, whinny, difficult to deal with, even mean. And to make matters worse, even though all they need is a nap, it becomes harder and harder to get to sleep.

As adults we have that same window of opportunity. Too often we miss it and work passed it. We start behaving like a 1 year old who missed his nap and then complain that we can't get to sleep or that we aren't getting rejuvenated from our sleep. We need to learn to listen to our bodies when we get tired and stop everything to get to sleep before it's too late.

Adrenal fatigue syndrome is showing up more and more in health media. It has been called the "21st century stress syndrome" by experts and occurs when our adrenal glands get overworked. Even with their extremely small size relative to other organs, our adrenals are responsible to how we feel, and the energy stores we have to use. If they get overworked, you will start to feel lethargic and lacking in energy.

If you find that you are very tired all the time and even a vacation or retreat is not recharging your system, you may be suffering from adrenal fatigue. The good news is that you can fully recover from it. And you don't need expensive medicines or treatments; you just need to learn to better manage your energy. It's definitely something you won't regret.

Give Up Plastics!

By Anne Tong

Plastic is perhaps one of the worst chemical materials that humans have invented in recent decades. Plastic is generally non-biodegradable. Thus, it causes serious environmental problems and posts huge biological hazard to living organisms. A huge amount of plastic wastes is being created every day. The resulting pollution is destroying our ecosystem, with the ocean being one of the largest victims.

Plastic is commonly used in a wide rage of applications as they are cheap, durable and easy to produce. However, also because plastic is cheap, people often just throw away plastic products soon after its first use and create huge damage to the environment.

Because of urbanization, pollution is mainly concentrated in cities. These materials are difficult to decompose, and will stay in the earth for many centuries. Hence the environment will be greatly polluted.

Apart from plastics, as synthetic polymers can be easily shaped, which can be made into thin films as bits and pieces. They are used to produce durable and disposable carry bags and packaging. Similar to plastics, these materials are non-biodegradable, and will remain in the same form when thrown out after using it.

As reported in the latest studies, there are 105 million tonnes of plastic produced per annum. People in India where only 2.5 million tonnes are produced use only 4 kg of plastic annually, while people in western and European countries use 70 kg annually. Nevertheless, the use of plastic is growing around the world.

Apart from that, the number of plastic waste in the ocean is also increasing. The majority of the objects found on the beaches are packaging materials and polymers.

This greatly ruins the life and habitat of marine life. Turtles and seabirds are the ones which bear the most. As you can see, plastic pollution is one of the most serious problems in the world, even greater than the problem of the ozone hole and global warming.

In order to protect ourselves from this deadly danger, we should use enduring and reusable jute bags or canvas bags instead of non-biodegradable carry bags. In the case of manufacturing companies, they should use other substitutes such as brown papers for packaging and wrapping. As for supermarkets, they should use paper bags or jute bags instead of plastic bags.

British Carbon Reduction Roars Ahead

By Daniel Stouffer

In terms of legislative approach, all eyes are on the United Kingdom over the next few years to see how the British carbon initiative outlined within the Climate Change Act of 2008 will pan out. While traditionally reticent, the British have been very proactive in this arena and do not plan to let the grass grow beneath their feet.

The Climate Change Act prompted the UK government to outline its aims for the future. British carbon initiatives plan "to improve carbon management and help the transition towards a low carbon economy in the UK and to demonstrate strong UK leadership internationally, signaling that we are committed to taking our share of responsibility for reducing global emissions in the context of developing negotiations on a post-2012 global agreement at Copenhagen next year."

Even though there is a post-Kyoto protocol agreement in the works, expected to come in sometime during 2012, British carbon reduction plans have nonetheless been pushed forward aggressively. Experts and environmentalists have shown that the overall threat to the climate is getting worse and it is necessary to take aggressive action as soon as possible.

The Climate Change Act establishes a carbon budgeting system which will help the UK government move towards the achievement of a considerable goal -- to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% by the year 2050. The budgeting system includes projects that run over a set of five years and the first budgets are set to run between 2008 and 2022.

While there are likely to be a number of international actions as well, it is interesting to see that the British carbon legislators have said that they "have regard to the need for UK domestic action on climate change," which may mean that they will place this first before any conformity to other standards.

The Carbon Reduction Commitment followed immediately on the heels of the Climate Change Act of 2008. This heralded the first legislative emissions trading scheme of its kind. Mandatory participation is required subject to qualification and there are a number of economic incentives for those who can reduce the size of their carbon footprint.

While the fact that only 5000 organizations are participating in the UK's "cap and trade" scheme may seem a rather low number, it should be noted that these organizations represent significant contributors to the problem through a large consumption of electricity. As a means to address carbon emissions and climate change, it will be interesting to see how market forces can really help.

Legislators in the United States are looking with keen interest at the British carbon reduction plans, as they themselves consider the passage of similar legislation designed to introduce a cap and trade system domestically. However, within the USA it seems that such sweeping action is not likely to be taken without a considerable process of debate and delay.

Spacious Easy Grow Greenhouse for Plants

By Benedict Perez

Easy Grow Greenhouse shelters the elements under it from heavy rains that can drown these tender plants causing their untimely demise. It is also an ideal place and size for our favorite plants to grow and for other seedlings of trees to nurture. The greenhouse is not really green in color but it is called as such because it houses greens or plants, and plants usually have green leaves. It protects growing plants and trees from the harmful elements of the environment such as the extreme heat of the sun or the gusty winds that comes around without warning.

This particular shelter allows plants to grow undisturbed coupled with proper care until such time that they become full grown. By the time they are ready to survive the elements of the natural environment they can be re-potted or moved to their respective spots. This type of greenhouse provides either temporary or permanent shelter mostly to ornamental plants. These plants may be relocated every now and then from inside and outside of the shelter.

Easy Grow Greenhouse keeps plant-eating animals away from devouring the greens found inside. This is another purpose, aside from giving shelter to whatever is being housed under or inside them. It is a perfect place to shelter and protect our growing plants and trees from the harmful elements of the environment, like the scorching heat of the sun or the opposite that is from heavy rainfalls that can fill the plant pots or vases leaving them soaking to death.

Having a greenhouse is also a hobby for it needs some maintenance. Just like any house, it needs to be cleaned, organized and must be looked after. The maintenance of one greenhouse depends on its size, designs and materials used. Some materials may not need repainting while really need to be coated every now and then to maintain its appearance.

Easy Grow Greenhouse features shelves where you arrange and rearrange your pots. It can also be found on some websites on the internet if you browse and visit them online. This is one type of plant shelter that can house as many plats as you can because of its design and style. It has louvers for proper ventilation and to allow friendly sunrays to shine on the greens within.

Produce More Organic Fertilizers with Compost Tumbler

By Benedict Perez

Compost Tumbler is a large tumbling vessel which can be stationed in any area of your backyard or garden space. It transforms organic wastes and biodegradable materials into healthy plant foods which is the main product of this compost maker. An organic plant food is an essential nutritional source of plants having the elemental nutritional value needed by plants.

It is a neat substitute of the open compost pit and has a lid to avoid mess and accumulation of unwanted pests. The open pit is too vulnerable to all pests and any type of disease-causing bacteria. This innovative compost vessel greatly helps in keeping away or eliminating undesirable organisms from harboring in it. Compost Tumbler is one implement that is truly helpful to the environment because of its function.

The soil and the main products of the earth need to be regularly fed with the most essential food. This essential food is the organic fertilizer to help them to survive and grow healthy for the benefit primarily for human consumption and that of other animals. Human beings, the plants and large animals and other lower forms of devouring creatures make up the entire symbiotic system which is basically dependent on the green things.

The soil is an incremental element for growing the plants that supply the food chain. Organic fertilizers, compared to chemical fertilizers, are the best foods for soil and plant. These do not contain the harmful toxins that can be naturally absorbed from the soil. The chemical fertilizers are proven to be detrimental to the produce of the soil and ultimately to the environment. These chemicals are obnoxious that can apparently damage the natural order of the environment.

Compost Tumbler is indeed a great innovation that has contributed to the welfare of nature. This compost maker manufactures the non-toxic products which are needed by the soil and the green leafy products of the soil. The soil and plants need to be fed with organic fertilizers and not the harmful chemical fertilizers.

Light Bulbs That Don't Waste

By Timothy Forestts

No matter where you go nowadays, people are always talking about "green" products and ideas. There are also more and more of these coming onto the market and the goal is to help the planet by wasting less energy. As a result, products we never thought would leave are being replaced with new technology. One example is the light bulb.

During the 1920s, fluorescent lighting was used in garages and commercial buildings where it was a good replacement for the regular light bulb. Fluorescent lighting produces up to 75% less heat than a regular light bulb, but it also had its drawbacks that kept it from being a suitable replacement for residential use. The problems with fluorescent lighting were the large tubes filled with mercury, the temperature sensitivity and intermittent flickering, as well as the problems of disposing of the lighting.

Today, thanks to Nick Holonyak, we have a much awaited lighting alternative discovered in the 60's called LED. He has deservedly received many honors and is referred to as the "father of the light emitting diode". It is made of a silicone element which then converts, without the faults found in other lighting types, electrical energy into light energy.

The light emitting diode, or LED, is different from all other light bulbs. LED lights are the same as the red indicator lights on electronic devices which show if it is on or off. What makes these lights different is that LED lights give off no heat or distorted tint, they have no movable parts and have a long life. On top of that, they are also very energy efficient.

New technology is running with this great new invention and have designed bulbs to replace street lights, decorative lighting and LCD displays in traditional flat screen TVs. The initial installation cost is still relatively high but the savings and benefits are so great that before long, every light bulb will be replaced with the energy saving LED. Who says you can't build a better light bulb? It has just been proven that you can.

How to Get Tax Credits While Saving Future Dollars

By Jerry C. Dyess, Jr.

Summary: The IRS is offering incentives to make energy efficient improvements to your home. But these come with strings and caveats. Be sure that what you are planning will qualify before you commit to the expenditure.

The government absolutely wants you to improve your home's energy efficiency, and to that end is offering tax credits for you to do just that. However, only some things you do will qualify for this credit, and strings are attached to those. Even so, if you qualify for these credits, it's certainly a good thing to have.

First, you need to know that energy tax credits can total 30% of expenditures (existing homes only for - windows and doors, metal roofs, insulation, asphalt roofs, ventilating, heating, and air conditioning systems [known as HVACs], non-solar water heaters as well as biomass Stoves) up to $1500 over a 2-year period (tax years 2009 and 2010). The credit is NOT for each year. Further, it is NOT for each adult owner of the home, unless they file separate income tax returns. A husband and wife filing a joint return, for example, could receive up to a single $1500 credit. Two adults (married or living together in the same home) could receive two such credits if they filed separate returns.

Besides that particular tax credit, there are also unlimited and longer-term tax credits totaling 30% of the cost, with no upper limit and good through the year 2016 for new construction and existing homes. This tax credit applies to solar water heaters, geothermal heat pumps, solar panels, small wind energy systems, and fuel cells. The tax credit for fuel cells is limited to $500 for every half kilowatt of power capacity.

Installation costs are only allowed for doors, windows, insulation and roofs.

And, to keep the confusion to a dull roar, you can only claim the tax credit for up to what you owe in taxes. Thus, if after other deductions you owe no taxes (even if you had tax payments withheld), you cannot claim the credit. And, if you don't owe enough taxes, you cannot carry over the credit (unless you install the items under "longer term" described above.

The good news is that you can claim both the $1500 credit and the unlimited credit as long as you satisfy the requirements for each.

You will also need to make sure that what you do qualifies for the credit; to do this, it's best to check with the manufacturer or the company you are working with. You should get what's called a Manufacturers Certification Statement that's been signed by the company/manufacturer to certify that it has indeed qualified for the credit. And as with anything in relation to the Internal Revenue Service, make sure you keep documentation -- receipts, the Manufacturers Certification Statement, and anything else you need -- so that you have proof in the event you should be questioned on it.

When you file your taxes, you'll need to include Form 5695 to claim this credit. Make sure you have the latest draft of the form; you should find the energy tax credit notation on line 52.

If you are thinking about this credit as a way of helping to offset the costs of viable energy-efficient home improvements, then you should visit the Energy Star web site to get more information. Check back periodically as the web site managers seem to be doing a good job of keeping information current and addressing questions. The web site's address is

http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=tax_credits.tx_index

Finally, you should also read the IRS rules on these improvements and credits carefully, and/or check with your tax advisor or other tax expert, if you have someone.

Using Junk In Your Craft Business

By Kay Lauren

Many people enjoy creating their arts and craft projects these days because it's a challenging way to create something that's beautiful and sometimes useful. Most homemade craft projects are made with art materials bought from an art store, but some artists are looking towards using more recycled items to make new crafts. People who make jewelry have been putting together jewelry out of junk materials for years and that skill has now moved into other arts and crafts areas.

Creating a craft project out of junk is often a great way to reduce the overall cost to make any piece of art. A lot of people are trying to be more "green" these days, so art projects made from junk supplies will be popular if you sell your items at a art show. Re-purposed materials used in clever ways is appearing in a lot of different areas these days, including in clothing, jewelry, purses and even in decorative home art.

Just about any material can be cleverly used to create beaded jewelry. Many people even make necklaces from bicycle chains and old DVDs. If you are looking for ideas on what sort of re-used materials you can utilize you really do not have to look any further than a local garage sale. Consider reusable craft supplies like the leather found in old handbags, shoes and wallets that can be sliced into long strips and twisted into something new.

Some supplies may need to be modified to make sure they do not have any sharp corners or could hurt anyone. When you are making crafts out of recycled supplies you'll probably need to make sure the supplies are free of dirt and not hazardous. Be sure to clean any possible grime off anything you take from the trash.

Making art made out of recycled materials could be your ride to a more monetarily lucrative future. The next time you throw something away you may want to stop and think about what type of art project you could make out of it. By using junk to make art you'll be helping the planet and maybe starting a new artistic trend of your own!

Thinking Of Giving Your Bathroom A Makeover? Think Again

By Tal Potishman

Giving your bathroom a makeover can be one of the most exciting projects you can get involved in. With the advent of tv makeover shows making their way across our screens, full of handy tips on how to get started, the thought of doing a makeover is more appealing than ever.

Many of these DIY experts advise viewers to mix and match from different manufacturers in order to save on cost. If done the correct way, this can lead to some great results. However, there are drawbacks with this as well, as it is very easy to make mistakes. It is one thing hunting around for great bargains; it is another to mix and match completely the wrong way leading to terrible results.

Be wary of colour inconsistencies

It is not just the cost saving aspect of it that has people shopping around from different suppliers. It all comes down to individual preference. Some just like the idea of making purchases based on the individual product's appeal. Whilst this can be quite fun, it is important to note that it is also risky business. If you are worried about colour inconsistency in your bathroom, you may have a problem on your hands if you shop around from different suppliers. Sometimes what appears at first to be the right colour may not be and only becomes obvious once you have the entire bathroom suite fitted.

Colour consistency is very important if you wish for your bathroom to look uniform. This is why many experts advice on buying not only from the same manufacturer, but also from the same range. This will provide you with colour consistency, and whilst this may appear overly fussy, it is better to spend a little more this way rather than take a risk with buying from different suppliers and ending up with a disastrous result. Spending lots of money on bathroom renovation means you only want the best result and nothing less. Colour consistency is especially important within smaller bathrooms. This is due to the fact that the sanitary ware is located within very close proximity and so the differences will be more noticeable.

Try not to clash

However, mixing and matching sanitary ware from different suppliers does not just cause colour inconsistency. You may have a piece of sanitary ware in the bathroom that may be causing a clash with the other pieces in the room. This will knock off the overall uniformity of the bathroom that will neither coordinate nor compliment the rest of the bathroom.

You should not be put off by purchasing a unique looking basin or bath if it appeals to you. However, some home-owners take it one step further by trying to have three radically different styles in their bathroom which ends up spoiling the overall look.

If you wish to go down the more selective route, it is best to select one type of sanitary ware you want to provide the focus, and the others should be from the same selection. This way you will have an overall coordinated look!

DEFRA Carbon Initiatives Break Ground

By Daniel Stouffer

The British have, like all of us, their own fair share of acronyms, but consolidated some of them when DECC absorbed DEFRA and BERR in an attempt to more effectively address the big problem of climate change. They have certainly made massive strides forward as the government promptly introduced the first far-reaching, legally binding legislation to the marketplace.

The DEFRA carbon approach resulted in the Carbon Reduction Commitment, a child of the Climate Change Act of 2008. The British certainly moved quickly on this to meet what are termed carbon budgets for the first years of the program. The CRC is an innovative climate change and energy saving program which has been designed to create a quantum shift away from traditional thinking.

It is likely that many will seek to mirror the effects of the British government's novel approach, should the DEFRA carbon scheme be successful. The British government has worked with considerable speed, especially when you consider the traditional constraints of the European Union system.

The Carbon Reduction Commitment is designed to place a financial incentive on carbon emission reduction by, for the first time, establishing carbon as a commodity and fixing a price per ton. The government is at pains to point out that the scheme should benefit those who are forced to participate and not be seen as yet another administrative burden.

Those who participate in the UK government's DEFRA carbon scheme are likely to realize benefits in the region of around $1 billion over the next 10 years or so. The Treasury Department points out that there will be no net revenues to the UK's version of the Treasury Department as all income will be recycled back to participants.

Although the UK government is very proactive in establishing the benefits of participation, there will in addition be considerable penalties should a company taking part in the DEFRA carbon scheme not perform efficiently. The Carbon Reduction Commitment will be the subject of a league table, which will be published for all to see, detailing those who achieve the most in terms of carbon reduction.

Is expected that as many as 20,000 organizations in the United Kingdom will be expected to participate in the CRC, but that only 5,000 will actively participate by documenting their carbon liabilities and by purchasing allowances from the government.

The UK has set considerable goals in the fight against climate change and global warming with the introduction of this sweeping legislation. Commencing in April of 2010, the goal is to reduce carbon equivalent emissions of at least 4MTCO2 per year within 10 years. This is a reduction of 26% of emissions compared to a 1990 baseline but only the start of a push to achieve huge reductions by the year 2050.

Wind Energy - Clean and Abundant Power For America

By Jerry D.

Wind is free and almost always blowing. It is a resource that we have only just begun to take advantage of. As the production of power from fossil fuels becomes more politically complicated and environmentally hazardous, the use of alternative energy generating sources will become more are prevalent. The interesting question is ? what percentage of our total energy production will wind power provide in the future?

Research shows that wind power has the capability to become a major contributing source of the US power supply. A new Department of Energy report shows that wind energy could provide for twenty percent of the total energy needs in twenty years. So by 2030, we could have one fifth of our electricity needs solved by the power of wind.

As the Department of Energy examines the various scenarios of energy production and consumption over the next decade and beyond they have compared outcomes. They have looked into the varying effects different levels of production would have and the possibility that they could occur. Their report contends that wind energy has the capability of meeting more than 20 percent of our country's needs by 2030.

In order to generate 20 percent of our power from wind energy by the year 2030 the construction of new wind generation stations would have to pick up its pace. If you increase the rate of production to the point where in nine years we could produce 16,000 MW per year then we would then be able to reach the twenty percent mark by 2030.

The wind energy industry has the potential not only to decrease the cost of electricity but to generate new jobs and a new growth industry, something our economy could use in its recovery efforts. The growth potential needed to maintain the level of production thought to be possible would mean as many as 150,000 new jobs in the wind power industry. Adding in peripheral jobs created by the growth of this industry, such as electricians, steel workers, accountants, and lawyers, the new job number would reach a half million.

The fact that wind power is a great option for our environment is an enormous benefit, but so too is that fact that we would have complete control over this power source. We would not be in the position we are in with our use of foreign oil.

Wind generation equipment does not have a negative impact on the environment. They will take up some space somewhere but wherever they are placed can be used for additional purposes, such as farming or livestock. It does not have the negative impact on the environment that drilling for oil and coal mining does.

Wind power also consumes no water, which is something that will be of increasing importance by 2030 or even sooner as many states will experience water shortages that may verge on a crisis in the future. The fact that wind power can provide for our electrical needs without destroying habitat or taking up lots of a precious natural resource makes it a very attractive alternative to the current system.

Home Heating Using the Sun

By Alexei Nevic

We have all gotten used to having heat on demand, but the ways that heat is generated are largely inefficient.Using solar energy to heat our homes, schools, and businesses is not only more energy efficient but cost effective too.Heat from the sun can be captured in several ways, even in winter. To be able to harness the sun's heat you will need a solar source. This is something that will attract the sun's rays and trap the heat that is generated by them.A sun room is a good example of this.

Sun rooms are attached to the house and are typically constructed of floor to ceiling glass panels. They are usually built to face the full morning sun so as to get the full effect of the heat. The glass intensifies the sun's rays so that everything in the room is heated. This is a very efficient and generally economical way of heating.

Here's some other forms of solar power heat:

Thermal mass that absorbs and retains the heat of the sun while it is shining and then disperses it after the sun goes down.

A natural ventilation and solar heating system, the Trombe Wall, uses air channels to trap heat between glass and a solar mass facing the sun. That sunlight is then absorbed and stored in the wall before being circulated through vents in the top and bottom of the wall. The wall uses this to radiate the heat.

A solar chimney is another solar ventilation system. It is made of a thermal mass that is hollow on the inside. The chimney warms the air inside of the chimney and causes the heat to rise. This rise allows air to vent and circulate properly.

A good way to ventilate a building is using solar cooling. This is done by absorbing solar heat and cooling it by making ice with a solar powered steam engine attached to the cooling device.

There are of course many ways to heat and cool our homes and businesses, but the methods listed above demonstrate the ways it can be done using only the sun. This is one of the better ways because it uses only natural resources rather than through methods that use non renewable materials.

The Solar Power Modules Report

By Arman Plank

How do you compare different solar panels? You measure the wattage power per panel. number of Watts Output when it is illuminated under standard conditions of 1000 Watts/meter2 intensity, 25C ambient temperature and a spectrum that relates to sunlight that has passed through the atmosphere.

Solar prices are falling fast, especially with thin-film technology. From early $27 per Watt Peak (Wp) prices to an expected $1 in the near future. At $1 Wp, grid parity will have been achieved in Photovoltaics (PV) and will be able to compete with the prevailing price of electricity.

Solar panels that cost less than $1 per watt to produce are on their way, as Colorado State University's new method for low-cost, high-efficiency solar panels looks set to begin mass production. They will be sold for about $2 per watt to the public, about half the cost of current solar panels. The cost reduction comes from a new, continuous manufacturing process which uses cadmium telluride thin film rather than the more expensive crystalline silicon.

The lowest thin film module price is at $2.49 per watt (1.89 per watt) from a Germany-based retailer. As a general rule, it is typical to expect thin film modules to be at a price discount to crystalline silicon (for like module powers). As thin film manufacturers expand production, prices are expected to drop dramatically.

Thin Firm CdTe (Cadmium Telluride) modules to generate relatively more electricity under high ambient (and therefore high cell) temperatures. Which means it is more efficient should there be high temperatures.

Advanced thin film design produces high energy yield across a wide range of climatic conditions with excellent low light response and temperature response coefficient. Frameless laminate is robust and can take a variety of shapes, is cost effective and recyclable as well.

The measurement of kilowatt-hours per kilowatt installed is an important factor. Calculate the average total solar watt output per dollar outlay. In most cases, when you are reach $0.15/kWh or better, you are competitive with your electric company.

The kilowatt hour is a convenient unit for electrical bills. 48- volt systems are a lot more expensive overall to setup. There are battery banks, inverters and cabling costs to consider. Still they are are a lot more efficient that 12v systems. A 1000w system would produce about 4 Kwh per day. Energy usage of a typical electrical customer in one month is several hundred kilowatt hours. Most families use between 4-9 Kwh per day. Get a do it yourself solar power kit and experiment utilizing this energy saving technology.

Go Solar Power And Save

By Allen Anderson

It comes as no surprise to many that our energy sources are depleting at an accelerating rate with no end in sight. Thus, the search for alternative energy has begun, and that journey begins with solar energy. Apart from the easy availability, solar energy helps control environmental pollution. The reason most of us havent thought of using solar power for our personal use is because of the stigma that it is expensive and troublesome to install.

You will, however, be surprised to know how easy it is to employ these power solutions. You are actually going to be saving money each month on your electric bill by using solar power. Being able to save money on your electric bill is all good and nice, but youll also carry the pride in knowing that you are reducing your carbon footprint on the planet, which your children and childrens children are going to thank you for. If you decide to learn how to make solar energy on your own, the costs will be cheaper because of less labor expenses.

This article hopes to accomplish to dispel any misconceived notions of solar power as well as to introduce its many uses around the house.

Solar power can be used to cook food. A solar cooker is a cooking mechanism that doesnt need any fuel to cook. It is a small box in which you can cook a meal for up to 5 people. Did you know that you can cook food with solar power? You can boil food, roast, and even bake all kinds of food. A solar cooker doesnt reduce your cooking methods. Stay the versatile chef that you are without sacrificing your meal by using a solar cooker. The only limitation, if it is one, is the time it takes to cook your meal as it takes just a bit longer than typical stoves. However, a solar cooker is still a great option if you are looking to cut down on your energy bill and do your part in saving the environment.

Another use of solar power is the having a solar home lighting system. This is when you have a solar house lighting system that converts solar energy into electrical energy. You maybe asking, But how does that work? Theres no sunlight at night when you need lights the most. This is possible because the energy is stored during the day in cells for use later in the nighttime. The solar energy is stored in the solar cells.

Installing a solar lighting system can almost fully eliminate your electric bill.

Solar heating system: Installing a solar heating system in your home helps cutting down your electricity bill along with saving the worlds quickly-exhausting power.

If the sound of a solar heating system sounds like someone breaking into your savings account, be assured that that is not the case. Solar heating system installers make it a point to create solar power solutions for homes that are aesthetically pleasing and cost effective for their customers. Placing a solar heating system is a worthy investment as people have seen a ROI within a three to four year time frame, thus being free heating after that.

Wind Energy - Clean and Abundant Power For America

By Jerry D.

There is no question that fossil fuels present many problems both to our environment and our economy. Every day new studies are being done to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of our alternative energy options. Wind power is one of these options. It is free and it is always available. In fact, we have already begun to generate some wind power. It is not yet clear how much this alternative energy source can meet our consumption needs.

Not only would the new wind generators create low cost electricity, but their creation will create a lot of jobs in a whole new industry. And this would be a new growing industry with almost guaranteed growth potential. The production levels mentioned would equate to 150,000 jobs in the wind power industry and over half a million new jobs total counting all of the support industries like lawyers, accountants, steel workers and electricians.

One huge benefit to the USA and a major factor in the decision to implement this plan, is that not only is wind power environmentally friendly, it is a domestic resource which means that we would have significantly more control over our power supply then we do now with an oil based system.

Another benefit is that wind power and wind generation does not have an impact on the surrounding environment. The stations will need to be located many places throughout the country, but the land that they used can be shared with other purposes, such as farming or grazing livestock. It does not damage the environment the way oil drilling and coal mining does.

A huge advantage of wind power is that it produces energy without using any water. Our water supply is shrinking. It is believed that by the year 2030, many of us will be facing water shortages on a regular basis that may reach crisis proportion. Wind power is an excellent option for all of these reasons.

Solar Power for Dummies

By Dale Green

Today there are classes to teach us anything and everything we ever wanted to know about solar energy. Many people just want to know the hard basic facts to kick them around in your had and see if they start to make sense. If that is you and you'd like to learn more, start slow, then continue reading.

Start by creating a project to teach you all about solar energy. You will need a battery. Car batteries will not work, as they aren't designed to deep discharge. They have very thin plates to keep their weight down. For solar batteries are different. They will need to provide long periods of deep discharge with just a few hours of a full recharge during the sunny time. Golf cart batteries are perfect batteries to use for this project. They are slow to discharge due to the thick plates, and don't need a lot of charging. With just a small amount of amperage, these batteries are very heavy. So many may need to be banked together for a large application of electrical use.

The next item you need are the solar panels. The size is not as important as the voltage. The voltage must be higher than that of the battery. Case being, if there is less power going into the battery, there will not be any power coming out of the battery, thus, your panel has to have more pressure to push into the battery. The wattage also must be higher. You can purchase one large panel or several small panels as long as the volts and watts equal what you need.

Determining the amount of electricity your going to need will measure how big the battery needs to be. With a little bit of work, you can follow this rule of thumb: Watts equal volts times Amps. The formula will begin by adding up the volts and Amps of everything that will need to run on solar for a grand total.

The number of amp hours will determine the hours of your panels to be used in 24 hours during the time of full sun. Estimated 6 hours total sun ours, take 1/6 of an amp times it by 14 volt panel. You will come up with 2.33 watts, rounding that up to 3 watts. You need a 14 volt, 3 watt panel to generate just one amp of solar power for your pond pump.

Now that you have power that is stored in your batteries, we need to convert the DC power over to AC in order to provide your electrical products. You can get an inverter which comes in all different sizes, and some have many options. A simple inverter unit is sufficient. It just needs to support the loads that you are going to draw through it. Estimated voltage that some motors have is 7 times their rated power just to start up.

Connections and the condition of your cables are very important whether it can support the load of current. Don't try and cut corners or skimp when buying small wire that will burn out (making it dangerous to catch other things around it on fire).

There is going to be a lot of maintenance and checking on the process of your energy and battery function. If you think you are ready to learn more, now is the time for a class.

Green Energy - Alternatives To Fossil Fuels

By Neil Schlossman

Fossil fuels are predominant in today's energy system and account for more than 85% of the world's energy consumption. Today, the need for energy is enormous, plus it's constantly growing and will continue to do so. How can we meet the energy demands, if we predominantly depend on fossil fuels? We can't, and sooner or later we will have to find alternatives.

There are two reasons why - energy supply and environmental issues. Fossil fuels are limited resources and cannot be replaced. They were formed, as their name suggests, from the fossilized remains of plants and animals over hundreds of millions of years. In other words - they are non-renewable. When the supplies run out, and they will run out, that's it.

The second reason is pollution. We use fossil fuels by burning (combustion) which produces many pollutants - carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds. Emissions from the consumption of oil, natural gas, and coal, are responsible for approximately 80% of yearly carbon dioxide emissions in the world. This affects both our health and the environment.

Fossil fuels definitely don't have a bright future. We know that the future belongs to renewable energy sources that do not pollute the environment. Not to mention they come in unlimited supplies. Solar, wind, and hydro are the main forms of renewable energy today.

By increasing the use of alternative energy sources, we could slowly start decreasing our dependence on fossil fuels. The best thing about renewable sources is that they will never run out.

The main drawback of renewable energy is the cost. It's true, low fossil fuel prices made it difficult for alternative sources to compete. But this is changing. Technologies are improving and the cost of green energy has fallen dramatically over the last few years.

Alternative energy sources are definitely the way of the future. But how smooth will the transition from fossil fuels be? That's up to us and is certainly something to consider sooner rather than later.

Modern Building Design - Is It Green Yet?

By Mary Smith

Green building design is an effort to design a building is such a way that it minimizes impacts on the environment and on people. Buildings designed in such a way can reduce the energy spent during construction and in operating the building throughout its lifespan. A wide variety of new materials, techniques and building practices have been developed over the past few decades to help building designers accomplish these goals.

The use of sustainable materials is one important characteristic of a green building design. Materials that qualify as sustainable include those that are available locally or those that are recyclable. Non-toxic materials as well as those that are reusable or renewable are often chosen as well. Orientation of the building on a site is another common characteristic of a green design. Building orientation can minimize unfavorable local weather conditions or take advantage of the sun to save a considerable amount of energy over the lifetime of the building.

The specific techniques and methods of construction chosen by the building designer can minimize the impact of the construction process on the environment. Use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power may be part of green building design. High efficiency water, waste and energy systems can reduce both the energy required, and environmental impact of the design over the lifetime of the building.

The global economic crisis has not reduced the trend towards sustainable building. Public demand and government initiatives have lead to a projected increase in green building. More than ever before, the public expects that products, services and even companies will be sustainable.

Even countries such as Malaysia, Mexico, Britain, South Africa, India, Israel, Canada and others have sustainable building design initiatives. Each of these countries has considered, explored, recommended or implemented green building standards or initiatives.

The unprecedented public demand for all things "green" has spurred a bevy of competing green building standards. The best known is the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System created by the US Green Building Council. Dozens of others exist, yet there is no national green building standard.

The lack of a strong national green building standard has led to some problems. Some buildings that claim to be green are in fact not green at all. Some companies feel they cannot compete without a claim to one standard or the other. In the worst cases, the issue of sustainable or green practices and materials has never even been considered, much less implemented.

The importance of green building design has taken many years to catch on. It has now become an important global trend. Some experts believe the trend towards green building will continue to grow. Others say green building design and practices will become less discretionary and more mandated. It will become standard practice. We're not there yet, but governments and the building industries are moving quickly in the right direction.

Wind Power - Cheap Abundant Power

By Jerry C. Dyess

Studies are being conducted by the US Department of Energy as they attempt to evaluate the situation. They report that in twenty years as much as 20% of our energy needs could be supplied by wind power. In fact, it has the potential to produce one fifth our electricity by the year 2030.

The D of E report looked at a scenario with wind playing a major role in energy generation by 2030 and also looked at the opposite scenario where we make zero investment in wind energy. The initial findings show that the country has even greater wind energy potential than would be needed to reach the twenty percent mark.

One huge benefit to the USA and a major factor in the decision to implement this plan, is that not only is wind power environmentally friendly, it is a domestic resource which means that we would have significantly more control over our power supply then we do now with an oil based system.

The American Deregulation of Electricity Service Providers

By Jerry Dyess Jr.

During the late 20th century, the American government initiated the deregulation of the electrical service provider industry in the United States. The belief behind the initiation of this project was that if the electricity service provider industry was deregulated it would save both businesses and consumers. While the natural gas industry has been slowly doing through the deregulation, process due to the complexity of calculations for the electric industry little has been accomplished. It is believed that restructuring the electric utility industry will have a significantly greater impact on not only the way operations are handled but also on the overall cost of energy for consumers. In order to understand deregulation there are several other prerequisites that need to be understood.

In the simplest terms, a utility is an entity which is created to provide a tangible commodity or service that is considered to be something vital to the well being of the general public. These commodities include electrical power, water, or natural gas. In addition, the utility has the responsibility for producing the commodity, transporting it (in the case of electricity through power lines they have erected), and ultimately distributing it on the retail level to the individual consumer through a meter and connections to the power grid.

Since utility service is such a vital need, it has been determined by both state and federal lawmakers that it is in the public's interest to regulate how it is provided. To keep utilities from causing the consumer to suffer price gouging and to encourage widespread access by individual consumers, the government originally gave individual utilities certain monopolistic rights to sell energy within a specific territorial area, known in the industry as the "service area" or "franchise territory." In the days when the utility was first conceived of, it was believed to be less expensive to provide any given mass market in a defined geographic territory with utility services from a single supplier because of the high cost of distribution. This monopoly was accompanied by the right of the utility to regulate price as well as service terms and conditions that the consumer had to abide by.

Because of their monopoly status in a given location, utilities are regulated at both state and federal levels. Federal jurisdiction regulates wholesale interstate transactions while state regulation deals more with consumer-level issues like rates and the quality of service. Despite the safeguards that were supposed to be in place in the form of a Public Service Commission, up until recently the consumer has had very little to say in the amount of rates charged by the utilities and had very little recourse open to them since they had no other choice except to go with the one utility that was operating in their area.

Recent America electricity deregulation legislation was designed to allow the consumer to choose a power company which has a more competitive rate charged for Kilowatt hours (KWh), offering a potential savings to the individual energy consumer. This also helps theoretically because a consumer is free to choose a utility which produces electricity using a more environmentally friendly renewable generation source for electricity like solar or wind generation as compared to the burning of coal which currently accounts for over a third of all power generated in America. Despite this deregulation, only 19 states have implemented or are implementing restructuring to a competitive market. The rest have either halted studies or have taken no steps to transition over despite advantages that the American power consumer could see.

Developments in legislation, signed in 2009 by President Obama however may see a renewed interest in deregulation. This legislation offers incentives for service providers who switch to cleaner, renewable forms of energy such as solar and wind.

In addition, individuals like homeowners or businesses that install smaller generation systems will be offered monetary incentives to help pay for the costs of the initial system. This legislation also compels electrical utilities to purchase any excess wattage that the individual generates which is above and beyond what is needed to power the business or home. A net meter, a device that keeps accurate track of wattage bought from or sold to a utility, can provide not only a significant possible energy savings to the owner of the generation system (experts estimate a savings of between one to two billion dollars annually between the years 2012 and 2042), but also serves to provide additional energy that is not dependant on dirty, dwindling fuels like burning coal that not only is less efficient to use, but is also more costly in terms of the devices needed to be factored in to make them cleaner and less injurious to the environment.

The more clean generation systems that come online, the closer we will be to catching up with the countries that already are trying to switch over to renewable fuel technologies. As one expert put it, so long as the sun shines, there will always be a free source of fuel, either via sun or wind generation.

Solar Power for Home

By Miles Novak

There are many different ways to make use of the light and heat energy emitted by the sun. Some common ideas include:

- Passive solar energy: taking advantage of the heat displaced by the sun to help regulate home temperature

- With the help of mirrors, thermal solar collectors can amplify the heat of the sun and pass it on to water or other substances

- The light emitted by the sun can be converted into electricity with photovoltaic cells

Passive Solar Power: this simply refers to taking advantage of and controlling the heat and light displaced by the sun. When done properly and effectively, this can have a great impact on your monthly utility bills. Some easy things that can be done to ensure your home makes the most of the passive power of the sun:

- The most important step in taking advantage of the suns heat is to have a well insulated home. Ensuring that walls, ceilings, and floors are adequately insulated can have a tremendous effect on maintaining a constant home temperature. Also check for insulation in spots such as around windows, doors, and electrical outlets.

- Another effective technique for keeping warm air in or cold air out is using curtains. Similarly, window shutters or clear insulating strips can also do a good job at regulating inside temperatures.

- Strategically placed vegetation, both inside and outside can help prevent heat from entering your home. When placed around windows or door ways, plants serve as a sort of heat barrier and can surprisingly keep a house quite cool in the summer. In addition to this, plants also provide fresh air, which is a nice thing to have!

Solar Power to Heat Water: since the sun is the hottest thing around, it makes sense to use its tremendous temperature output to heat your home. By concentrating this heat output, one can easily warm water or a space (temperatures can reach up to boiling point!).

A common device that is used to heat up water or air is known as a "thermal collector". This device is basically a glass covered panel that holds metal plates (usually dark). These plates absorb the heat, and in turn transfer it to the substance that is to be heated. The heated substance (water, air, etc) can either be used immediately or be collected in a well insulated storage tank for later use.

Finally, light emitted from the sun can be captured and converted to electricity. Basically, this is achieved through a reaction that happens within the photovoltaic panels which results in charged electrons creating an electric current. This can then be stored in a battery or used directly.

Recycle Your Boxes After Moving

By Amy Nutt

Moving from one home to another can seem overwhelming. There are so many things to consider, from shutting down one set of utilities and getting started with the next, painting, rearranging, trying to get adjusted to a new neighborhood and if you have children, getting them settled into their new school. All of this is time consuming and stressful. Then comes moving day and you may be completely undone by the huge number of boxes stacked in every room of your new home.

You may be hesitant to wade into the ocean of boxes because you fear you will never be able to finish unpacking and finding a good place for everything. The last thing you may be thinking about is what to do with all of those boxes once you have emptied them, but they will have to go somewhere. So , just what are you going to do with all of those empty boxes?

Recycling Works

Of course, you could simply throw all of those boxes away, but that is not your best solution, First of all, that simply moves the problem from one place to another. Now instead of the boxes being stacked in your rooms, they are piled up outside, waiting for garbage day. Second, the number of plastic garbage bags you will need to hold all of those boxes is itself detrimental to the environment.

A better solution is to recycle the boxes. This is easier on you and helps the environment. Boxes can be easily flattened by cutting the tape at each end. Then you simply have to stack them into piles of similar sizes and bind them together. They take up very little room like this to be stored until your community picks up recyclables. If the area you are moving into does not have regular recyclables pick ups, call the town hall. They may schedule a pick up for you or they can suggest a near by facility where you can drop them off.

New Home, New Habits

Many people see moving into a new home as starting with a fresh page. Everything is new and different and it is the perfect time to develop new habits before you get set in your ways. Make sure that the new routines you establish are beneficial to your family and the world around you.

Why not make recycling a regular part of this new lifestyle from the outset. Recycling is an easy habit to maintain once you get started. Teach yourself and your family the environmentally responsible way to live from the first days in your new home, when there are many changes happening. Don't wait until you have gotten settled in because by then you may have already established a routine and separating your recyclables will seem like an additional chore. Done from the beginning, it will soon become a normal part of your daily life. A good way to break into this habit is to start from the very first day in your new home by recycling your boxes after moving.

How to Keep Your Heating and Air Conditioning System Running at Top Efficiency

By Jerry Dyess

With energy costs recently skyrocketing, it is crucial for all homeowners to be aware of how to get the most out of their heating and air conditioning systems. No matter if you use central air conditioning or individual units, oil, or gas heat, these essential utilities can be very pricey if you do not do correct upkeep on them. In addition, depending on where you live, you may have to use them for many months of the year.

In the this article we will be giving homeowners a number of valuable tips on how to get the most out of their heating and air conditioning systems.

Tip 1 - Even if you are talking about hot or cold air, you must make sure that you always have good airflow. The leading reason why airways become clogged is soiled air filters. That is why it is vital that you check your filters once a month. If you see that they are worn or soiled, simply visit a hardware store and buy replacement air filters. This easy suggestion can save you hundreds of dollars annually on energy costs.

Therefore, it is imperative that you check your filters at least once a month. If you find that they are worn out, simply go to your local hardware store and buy or order replacement filters. This simple tip could save you hundreds of dollars a year in energy expenses.

This will eventually raise your utility rates and make your system wear down quicker than it should. If you can manage it, you can always clean your condensing coils by running them under the hose. Make sure you handle them gently and do not use a strong stream of water. The fins in the condensing coils are fragile and if they are damaged you will have to buy new coils, and they are costly.

As well, you can clean your evaporator coil with some dish soap and warm water. You can use an old toothbrush to clean the insides but be cautious as to not damage the fins.

Tip 3 - Fallen insulation and crumbled or damaged duct lines will affect the temperature in your home. If you find either of these issues, then you must contact your service company to come and replace them for you. Do not go crawling around your attic trying to find the issue yourself unless you have a lot of experience dealing with insulation or duct repair.

Hint 4 - Finally, it is a great idea to buy a service agreement from your local service firm. These agreements are usually cost efficient and will provide you with a trained professional that will come to your house and check your system two times a year and will do any maintenance repairs and do all the necessary cleanings on all your filters and coils.

Do your due diligence to see which company gives the most ideal service agreements, as they will vary in cost and features. Same as having our automobiles serviced, having the heating and cooling systems in our homes serviced is a way to prevent problems from happening and a great investment that will save you significant amount money per year in energy fees.

Alternative Lawn Care Is Easy

By Andrew Caxton

Over the last several years, a variety of alternative lawn care methods have been sought by those looking for another solution. These products are unique because they do not have chemicals in them. This makes them eco-friendly. Experts say that the use of chemical based fertilizers, pesticides and other products can not only poison your lawn, but affect the health and well being of your family, too. Most often, you will not notice these adverse health effects on your family. Yet, if you have pets and children, they are especially at risk for these effects. Being careful with the use of these products is a must.

Additional Risk

As well as harming your health, these chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides can also hurt the fragile Earth's environment. In some studies, evidence has been seen of these chemicals altering the soil in various ways and then contributing to polluted ground water. The fact is, with all of these potentially dangerous risks evident, it is important to consider alternative lawn care methods.

Products To Consider

The good news is that alternative lawn care products are readily available today. Not all of them, though, are 100 percent organic and that means you need to be careful when selecting the right alternative lawn care products to use in your home's environment. Anything that is not 100 percent organic can still contain harmful chemicals that do damage to your lawn and to your environment. To know if the product is effective, look for an organic seal on the packaging. Anything that is not 100 percent organic should not be used because it still does not protect the environment as it should.

Finding the right alternative lawn care product for your home is important, but do take into consideration the type of grass and your climate when making your selection. Various types of grass need different types of nutrients from these products and the products you select need to provide this. The climate effects how the grass grows, which means that you may find that you do not need a lot of product to maintain a healthy lawn. Choose grasses that are suited for your climate. These grasses will be able to handle the changes in your climate naturally and may not need too much additional product applied. When you do need to find a product that is going to provide health to your lawn, always choose alternative lawn care products.

Constructing a Windmill to Make Electricity

By Pam Eisenberg

Because utility costs are rising, learning about constructing a windmill to make electricity is a wise idea. Over time, people interested in harnessing wind power began to catch on to the benefits of wind-driven energy. In fact, such a method of power generation showed more promise than most other techniques. Ongoing engineering of these power plants is occurring even today. And though many windmills can be quite large, more than a few are available for personal home use and power generating.

Windmills Today: Windmills are cheaper than ever because of the economies of scale realized from mass-production. In fact, it's become more practical than ever to build a personal home windmill. It can also generate most, if not all, of a home's energy needs. Commercially-made units can cost as much as twenty-thousand dollars. This alone makes constructing good personal mill a better idea. And they can be made for as little as two-hundred dollars on top of it.

Take Care to Build it Right: Plenty of diagrams and blueprints for these do-it-yourself windmills exist. Purchase a good set and follow the instructions closely. Use the right tools, too. In reality, they're pretty easy to construct but people fail when they try to use improper materials or rush through the project. Also, the best parts and accessories many times are free or really cheap. Don't be trapped into buying expensive parts you don't need.

Windmill Components: Windmills have only a few basic components. All will have a fan system of some type, usually with several blades. The best ones have a radius of about four feet. These fans are connected to a motor that generates direct current (DC). The fan and motor sits atop a small tower, about seven to fifteen feet above the ground. Also, ensure a rudder's been connected to the rear of the motor. This will enable the fan to always face into the wind, as the motor rotates on its axis.

Power Collection: Once the motor generates power, it has to be stored in some capacity. Generally, a bank of batteries serves this purpose. They hold power for future use in the house.

DC to AC Power Conversion: All mills need to use what's called an "inverter." This device converts the wind-generated DC power over to usable household AC (alternating current) power. Also, make sure a controller module is used. It prevents the batteries from being overcharged by the DC motor.

Watching Your Power: Many meters exist which display battery power available for immediate usage. They show power in the batteries themselves, and also show how much power is being used in the house right at that point in time.

System Complexity: A wind-powered household mill system can be as simple as that. You can also run it separately from the local power grid, or use it to supplement the power you derive from electricity power lines and the like. Also, tying in solar panels to the windmill system can help you make and store power on windless days. At the very least a good windmill-power storage-power conversion and monitoring system will lessen the cost of purchasing electricity by a significant amount.

Toxic Waste Cause Harm to Environment

By Amy Nutt

When most people hear the term 'toxic waste,' they tend to think about large corporations and even construction sites where large amounts of it are being dumped every day. The truth is toxic waste is anything that could be dangerous for living creatures. This includes things around the average home from mouse traps to cosmetics and most cleaning supplies. If people aren't careful about how to dispose of them, they could cause severe harm to the environment as well as themselves.

The biggest problem with most toxic waste, even the stuff that just sits around in the house, is that it can't be dealt with like other materials. Toxic materials should never be poured down the drain, flushed down a toilet, dumped outside, or thrown in the trash. Most things that contain these toxins will give specific instructions somewhere on the label on how to safely dispose of them. Local dumpsites will also have knowledgeable people who are able to inform people of how to get rid of the hazardous waste. Some landfills will also accept this waste for an extra charge.

Recycling is another option for people who need to get rid of toxic materials. As an example, ash is actually a toxin if it is in extremely large quantities. It can harm the environment when it is just tossed outside. Instead of someone throwing their ashes out they can actually reuse them as an ingredient for making things like candles and soap. Other toxic materials can be reused in a similar fashion such as plastic bottles or tires. They can be used for art projects and even useful items such as flower pots or playground materials.

People who share with their neighbors also have a handle on dealing with toxic waste. Many times people want to dispose of things because they won't use it anymore but rather than dump it there is the option of giving it away. Paint, cleaners, and other around the house items can be given away to other people who will use them. That means that there will be less of it to throw away. When people only need a product for a one time occasion, it would be better for them to ask a neighbor to borrow it than buy a whole container of something. Saving products for a later date is another way to reduce the amount of toxic waste that occurs.

Of course the best way to toxic waste management is to completely prevent it. Just about every household item that is toxic has a 'green' product that has little to no toxins in it. For cleaning drains, people can actually use vinegar and baking soda as a safe method for unclogging and cleaning dirty drains. Stores also sell non-toxic products and will label all of their products that do contain serious chemicals. The safe products will be in the same area as the chemical filled ones and will only be higher in price by a very small percentage. Online websites also offer alternatives to using hazardous materials.

How Do Solar Panels Work?

By Walter Hull

Solar energy is an excellent source that has the potential to greatly reduce environmental pollution. Unfortunately, it's recognized as an "alternative energy" since it isn't an energy source used by a majority of the population. One of the main reasons is that it's still quite costly to manufacture. Right now, calculators and decorative outdoor lights are a couple of the most popular solar powered gadgets. The question remains, how do solar panels work? How does setting up a small panel, directed towards the sun, turn the sunlight into the electricity that keeps those pretty, bluish bright lights lighting up the walkway all night long?

Solar panels are made from special materials that absorb the sun's rays and turn them into electricity that can power all sorts of electronic devices. Devices that we use electricity for everyday without thinking twice about could be powered by solar panels.

A budding technology used today for solar panels is photovoltaic (PV) electricity. It involves the use of specific materials that convert solar energy into electricity. The electricity can be used right away or it can be stored using DC batteries. Either way, we've got power!

These materials have been recently developed and they release electrons when prompted by sunlight. Another name for a photovoltaic panel is a "direct energy conversion device". All of these effects take place on an atomic level without any moving parts.

Historically, only space age technology used photovoltaic panels. Space stations and satellites used them because they were a reliable source for continuous solar energy conversion. The extra bonus that using them in outer space has is that the sun's radiation is at least 50% stronger than it is here on Earth.

People who live more than a mile from an electrical grid are better candidates for solar power use especially those in residential homes. It's significantly more expensive to install power transmission cables than it is to install a solar panel kit. If you fit this criterion then solar energy to power your home is a smart way to go.

Still, how do solar panels work? Understanding solar energy can help answer this question. Solar energy's made up of two kinds of radiation, and the most desirable for solar panels is called "beam radiation". This is what we feel when soaking up sun rays on the beach in June, when there's not a cloud in the sky. Clear days are the best for collecting beam radiation, but the solar panel needs to be placed strategically to gather the most direct sun rays possible if you want to get the most from your solar panel.

The other kind of radiation from the sun is called "diffuse radiation". This shouldn't be relied on for the sole energy to be absorbed by your solar panels. This is what we feel on an overcast, cloudy day or if chilling out under a shady tree. To rely on this type of energy from the sun as your main source of sunlight is far from practical.

For solar panels to work efficiently, a sunny location is mandatory. Beam radiation is the most effective since it's the strongest. Most of Western America qualifies as a good locale for beam radiation those states are good candidates for the use of solar energy, but northern climates and coastal states are usually quite cloud-laden and sadly, not worthy of 100% solar-reliance.

Solar panels can be set-up to meet your specific needs. 12 volt, 24 volt, and 48 volt DC systems are the most common. The life expectancy of 12 volt solar panels is well over 20 years and they fall in the range of 12-14% efficiency.

Today's production of solar panels consists of using supremely pure silicone semi-conductor materials. This is primarily what makes the use of solar power so expensive. Luckily there are new materials in the making and they're particularly geared toward lowering the cost of production, thus lowering the cost for the consumers. Cadmium Telluride based solar panels are an example of new solar energy technology, and if these materials are successful in the final outcome then the price of solar panels should greatly decrease, making our environment that much cleaner as more and more people convert to solar power.

Soon enough, solar energy won't be considered "alternative" anymore. You want to consider certain things if you're planning on converting to solar power before making a decision, but it's a step in the right direction for the environment. The benefits outweigh the cost when it comes to our planet's health. Energy independence has become a common goal for many, and if you want to use solar as just a back up plan, then the choice is practically already made for you. The planet will benefit immensely once solar energy is accessible to everyone.

What About Clothes Organic?

By Ferdinand Emy

By buying clothes that are organic, you accomplish many goals. Foremost, you put a stop to chemicals from fertilizers and pesticides from being introduced into the environment. Chemicals from fertilizers and pesticides are responsible for damage to the ecosystems directly near farms and plantations, also as damage to ecosystems that are downstream of the growing sites.

A outstanding example of this is the dead zones in the Gulf of Mexico, which is further agitated by the utilise of nitrogen and phosphorous heavy fertilizers which run off into the rivers. Additionally to this, some of the pesticides utilized cause damage to endangered species, such as bald eagles.

When you decide to buy clothes that are organic, you need to assure if you wish your clothing to follow under Fair Trade ordinances. Fair Trade, or the assurance that all workers in the manufacturing process are given fair compensation for their effort and work, is a growing trend, especially among those who are intent in organic products. Fair Trade, coupled with Organics, is believed by many to be an excellent way to encourage the planet's sustainability. The downside to this is that Fair Trade goods are by and large more costly than other items, as the cost of production is increased. When you couple this with the fact that organic cotton is more pricey than those exposed to fertilizers and pesticides, the cost can be notably higher.

Additionally to not utilizing pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, clothes that are organic are less apt to irritate the skin. This is due to the fact that harmful additives, more often than not employd to put a stop to wrinkles, aren't added to the clothing. Formaldehyde, the primary bonder utilised in wrinkle-less cotton is a known allergen, irritant and is known to cause deformities in infants and cancer. While the levels of formaldehyde found in non-organic clothing poses little threat to humans, those with allergies can suffer unpleasant side effects should they be exposed. Formaldehyde is banned in cosmetics in Sweden and Japan.

Because clothes that are organic lack anti-wrinkle chemicals, you may find that caring for your novel clothes may be challenging. Notwithstanding, there are organic products designed to lower the hassles of caring for organic clothing. Once you have buyd clothes designed of organic materials, you will want to use gentle, organic laundry soaps. Harsh chemicals and lower the durability of soft fabrics like natural cotton. Plus, these soaps are biodegradable and leave no lasting damage to the surroundings.

Nigerian Oil Killing Fields

By Lance Jensen

The U.S. consumer buys a lot of oil from Nigeria. How much? Over 500,000 barrels per day. Nigeria is the 6th largest supplier of oil to the U.S.

Oil companies in the U.S. promised that the flow of money into Nigeria was going to make life a lot better for the people.

U.S. oil companies could careless about the Nigerian people. They did not care about the welfare of the Nigerian people anymore than U.S. Insurance companies care about the welfare of their members. All that the U.S. oil companies wanted to do was to take the oil as quickly as possible. What most U.S. citizens do not know is that their consumption of oil and gas is killing the average Nigerian.

Worse, big oil executives have known what is happening to Nigeria because of the oil trade for years now, but still they continue to use their Washington lobbyists to delay solar power development.

The video below shows how the oil trade has benefited oil companies and politicians in the U.S. and Nigeria while killing ordinary Nigerians.

A kind of civil war is going on for who should control the oil.

Average peoples homes are demolished in order to create luxury housing for foreign oil workers and oil executives.

A pastor who has had his church demolished in the name of the oil trade laments, "The oil boom has turned into the oil doom."

As the big oil companies demolish a woman's home, she clutches her children and cries, "I need help! Someone please help!"

The Limbaugh Republicans who believe that all business is benevolent and all governments bad need to go back to school and learn about the Nigerian oil trade.

How many people in Nigeria have been killed in the name of oil? This is what happens in a post Republican control era where 8 years of Republicanism and small government have led to a devaluing of human life. It is much like the debate in America on Health Care where Health Insurance companies have denied coverage and charged extortion like monopoly fees forcing some 50 million Americans to be without insurance. These bible thumping Republicans have lost their way. The bible says that money and the pursuit thereof is the root of ALL evil. Yet somehow, this part of the bible is ignored by these Republican zealots.

This is what America has become after 8 years of unchecked Republicanism where government is seen as evil and business as good.
