Environment: Make Solar Power

By Steve Taylor

The sun is the most abundant source of energy on the planet and nuclear fusion is expected to continue in the sun for another 10 billion years. With minimal effort, anyone can learn how to make solar power by capturing light from the sun.

Why is solar power better than other forms of energy production?

The solar energy solution is gaining popularity amongst the alternate energy solutions.

Solar power is one of the few, totally green solutions available to us today. What this means is that solar power does not use another fuel in order to work. It simple converts light from the sun into energy. Nothing bad is released into the atmosphere in order to generate solar power.

The cheapest solution out of all the alternative energy solutions available on the market today is solar power. What can be cheaper than converting light from the ultimate free source, the sun, into energy you can use to power your home? If you make your own solar power system at home and install it yourself, you can recover your initial costs in less than a year.

Storing energy: It is not possible to store power from your power company but you can store solar power to use in the future. Even at night, the energy you stored from your solar panels into a battery bank will provide you with power 24 hours a day. This means that when your neighbors have a power outage, you won't because you have a battery bank powering your home. Imagine how jealous your neighbors will feel when they see only your house has lights and a TV on while they stand outside in the dark.

Low on maintenance costs. Solar energy systems are easy to maintain. They do not involve high costs or too much effort, thus letting you reap the benefits of the solution comfortably.

Anyone can adopt the following solar power systems and start saving money right now with the following:

Solar cooking system: Solar cooking lets you cook without a fire or using electricity! I know what you are wondering. But before you wonder, let me put your mind at ease and dispel some of the rumors about solar ovens. You can cook light a regular oven (boil, roast, or bake). The only demand that solar cooking makes of you is being patient; a conventional oven heats up faster. However, this slower time is more than offset by the advantages of not having to pay your gas or electricity bill! There are even some studies coming out that show solar ovens are healthier than conventional gas ovens or the microwave.

Solar lighting: You can use all the lights in your house and all your electrical appliances without having to worry about your energy bill. You can use this power even at night thanks to having a battery bank to store the energy from your solar panels.

Solar heat system: You can heat your house during the cold months with a solar heater. You can even heat your water with it without having to worry about any energy costs.

Have You Overlook An Important Area When Saving Energy?

By Michael Edwards

Often overlooked in today's marketplace when using green products, is how to reduce your carbon footprint. Maybe a story about the use of CFL (Compact Florescent Lamp) bulbs will help illustrate the point. I was having breakfast at a local restaurant when my father (who was visiting from out of town) observed that only forks and knives were used in the place setting. It seems that customers no longer need spoons.

Well, we asked our server what was going on. She told us that "corporate" had put a new rule in place at all the restaurants instead of investing in green products. The rule was that no spoons were to be placed on any place setting. I grew up in an environment where a full place setting was always set before a hungry customer, consisting of a fork, knife and spoon. Now, "corporate" in its wisdom has said that only if a customer ordered coffee was a spoon to be given to the customer. I have a six year-old that uses a spoon for her fruit bowl; we had to ask for a spoon.

After inquiring why this had occurred, I was informed that "corporate" believed that there would be an energy savings and yet not a single CFL bulb was in use. I asked how that was possible; I was told that if an unused spoon was rewashed it was costing the company money and energy. So to prevent this energy loss it was better to not put the spoon on the table. The customer would just have to wait as their coffee or hot cereal got cold or until the overworked and over utilized server was done handling the other customers who needed spoons (more likely food).

I find it hard to believe that the amount of money saved would be significant as opposed to using CFL bulbs to save money. I seem to remember, just after high school, I worked in fast-paced restaurant chain. Everyday practice was to wash the plates, pot, pans and miscellaneous items in one or two baskets, followed by the glassware, and then wash the silverware in the last basket. So, where would the energy savings be if dishes are washed this way?

While pondering on this I looked up and noticed that the entire restaurant was covered in lights. Each light was an incandescent bulb and no green products like CFL bulbs anywhere. I stopped when I reached fifty bulbs that I could see from my table; I know there were more in back kitchen area, in the bar and adjoining rooms.

Looking around it was easy to see that most of the incandescent bulbs were in the 75 watt range. I asked and was told this restaurant was open 138 hours each week.

So I did a little comparison; incandescent vs. green products like CFL bulbs. Using a little math: 50 incandescent bulbs * 75 watts = 3750 watts per hour. To figure the total watts per week for the store, take the watts per hour 3750 watts * 138 hours the store is open per week = 517,500 watt hours per week. The grand total for one year would be 517,500 * 52 weeks = 26,910,000 or 26 megawatts for this store alone so I wondered what the saving would be using green products like CFL bulbs.

Looking up the restaurant chain up on the web reviled they owned 88 stores. So, figuring 50 bulbs is average and everything remains the same, a whopping 88 * 26,910,000 = 2,368,080,000 watt hours or 2,368.08 megawatt hours is used per year for this chain of stores without using green products or any CFL bulbs.

Now, what if we replaced all the incandescent bulbs with CFL bulbs? Well, a replacement for a 75 watts bulb runs 18 watts. So 50 bulbs times 18 watts would equal 900 per hour. Then we multiple 900 watts times 138 store hours and we get 124,200 watt hours per week. Then multiply 124,200 * 52 week we would get or 6.46 megawatt hours per year. Now, take the megawatt hours per year (6.46) times the number of stores (88) and we get around 568 megawatt hours per year for the whole chain using green products. If we do a little subtraction, we would get around 2,368 minus 568 = 1800 megawatt hours savings. I would say that they would be saving more than pennies if they were using green products like CFL bulbs.

Building a Wind Generator - The 4 Most Critical Parts of Your Wind Power System

By Ethan Cudney

There are many companies today who not only supply but will install wind generators for you. However, to be completely honest, most of these professionally installed systems are pretty expensive. If you are looking for a way to provide additional power to your home, but your budget is limited, then you should consider building a wind generator yourself.

You may not realize it, but building a wind generator yourself could end up only costing you around $100 - $200, rather than thousands and will be a very wise investment indeed. This one small investment in turn could end up saving you thousands of dollars on what you electricity bills would normally be.

Another thing you may not realize when it comes to building a wind generator is that many of the parts required can be purchased at your local hardware or DIY store or online. So thinking that you are going to have problems obtaining the parts that will prevent you from building it is simply not going to happen.

But before you do start building your own wind generator there are a number of things you need to take into consideration first. Below we look at just what some of these things are. If you keep these tips in mind it will help to ensure that you build a wind turbine system that will last a very long time.

Tip 1: The Base - The base of your wind generator should be one that provides enough support on which it can stand. The best material to make the base with is concrete. This will allow the supports of the wind generator to be held in place firmly no matter how strong and fast the wind blows.

Tip 2: The Tower - You should definitely try to construct the tower from metal. However, if your budget is limited then use the thickest plywood that you possibly can. This will help to ensure that you have a sturdy tower that can cope with all types of weather conditions.

Tip 3: The Turbine Blades - The blades you build or buy need to turn smoothly without any friction or any chance of them becoming hindered. If you've never built wind generator blades before you may want to buy premade quality blades, which will ensure that they provide you with ample amounts of energy. These can be purchased pretty cheaply at websites like eBay.

Should you decide to make your own blades you should create them using PVC or plywood. It is important that the size of the blades is in equal proportion to the size of the tower you have constructed. If you make the blades too big then the tower won't be strong enough to hold them up, whilst if they are too small then they aren't going to be able to return the levels of energy that you need to power your home.

Tip 4: The Gearbox - When building a wind generator yourself you must ensure that the gearbox you attach to your blades is a sound one. Ones that are too small or made from inferior materials will not allow the blades to rotate freely and so the levels of energy that they create won't be sufficient to provide you with what you need to power your home.

Solar Oven Designs - The Different Types Of Solar Oven Designs Available

By Tim McDonald

For several decades various solar oven designs have typically been used in third world regions where electricity or other fuel sources are hard to find. Solar cookers have been used effectively in sunny African countries like Sudan to not only cook food, but also for water purification and pasteurization.

But just because first world countries have enough energy supplies, it does not excuse us from using solar cooking at home and helping to conserve that energy. What's great about solar cooking is that it uses the power of the sun to cook food - though it may take 4 times longer than a conventional oven.

Over time many solar oven designs have been mastered, but they generally fall into three main categories: parabolic solar cookers, panel cookers, and box cookers.

Parabolic Design:

A parabolic solar cooker, as the name implies, is made from any reflective material in a parabolic (bowl like) shape that focuses sunlight to a single point. It is the most effective at cooking food quickly and efficiently, however, it tends to be more expensive and hard to make by hand. Furthermore, its fixed shape makes it less portable and raises some safety concerns.

Panel Cooker:

Similar to the parabolic design, the panel design focuses sunlight to a single point. However, it is less rounded and made up of a number of small, flat, reflective panels.

The panel shape is not as efficient as the parabolic shape, but it has the advantage of being foldaway, portable, and rather simple to make. These cookers can be found in a number of interesting deigns, but the simplest is by far the one made by folding one of those reflective windscreen blinds.

Box Cooker:

Very different to the other two designs, the box cooker works by trapping the sun's heat, instead of simply focusing it on a central point. It is designed in such a way that it let's light in, but stops that heat from escaping. As more sunlight comes in, the hotter it gets.

This results in the entire area of the box to get hot and be able to cook larger portions of food at a time. This design is by far the simplest to put together - all you need is a black cardboard box with one side covered in tin foil and a sheet of clear perspex or glass on top to hold in the heat.

What's great about most solar oven designs is that they can be built from everyday materials in a few short hours. Like a conventional oven or stove, they can be used to prepare anything - such as roasted meat, steamed vegetables, rice, fried eggs, and baked bread. And since a solar cooker is used outside, it will not heat up the kitchen and place stress on your cooling system.

And if you think that over 75% of American households use their oven or stove on a daily basis - a tremendous amount of energy could be conserved if more of us used solar oven designs during summer.

So get started cooking with solar today. There are a number of commercially available solar cookers on the market. Alternatively you can make your own at home by searching online, where a variety of free solar oven designs with full building instructions are provided.

Using Wind Power At Home Is Easy

By Lance Jensen

With population growth and the constant doubling of demand for energy, we must take action to save power for as power becomes scarce, its price increases as we are now seeing. Now it is possible for an individual to produce their own energy that is pollution free. Solar power and wind power are the two leading do it yourself energy solutions that can be used to replace conventional energy sources.

Wind power and solar power, through the use of a battery bank, reduces your electricity bills, saves the planet, and is a superior supply of energy during power outages.

This article gives you a few things to consider first if you are looking to build a home wind power generator.

You need to have an open area if you really want to save a lot of money off your power bill with a wind generator. Having an acre or more is the ideal setting.

Take a moment to think about the amount of wind in your area. If you do not have much wind flow, then a wind power generator will save you little. Ideally, you want to live in an area that has an average wind speed of 11 miles per hour.

Your house needs a lot of uninterrupted power supply. Combating those power outages is easy with the pollution-free wind power systems. You need no longer worry about a break in your work because of a power uncertainty.

A typical wind power system comprises of a tower and five blades to churn out wind energy. The length of the wind tower varies depending on the location of your house. You may need a longer tower if you are in low-wind zone; you can work with a shorter tower if you live by the beach. Using a wind generator, this wind energy can be converted into useful electrical energy to be employed at home for running various electrical appliances. You can even store the power generated for later use, making wind generators more efficient than convention power systems.

If you are confused with the wind power terminology, this bit of information will help you. The terms, wind power generator, wind mills, wind turbines, and wind generators are all used to refer to the same machine.

Must I Buy Wind Turbine Insurance?

By Sean Hernandez

Where can you buy wind turbine insurance? First let us cover some basics. Very few people have ever heard of the electric company requiring a million dollar insurance policy. Do not freak out if you are told you need such a policy by your local electric company. You need to know about this insurance requirement before you spend the money on your wind turbine.

So why does insurance even come into play? Well, in some cases it does not. It all depends on how you are wiring up your wind turbine. If you run your wind turbine straight to a battery bank and never connect it to the power grid, you do not need to worry about insurance. Where insurance comes into play is if you want your power meter to run backwards as you sell energy you produce back to the power company. In order to accomplish this, you must connect to the power grid.

In more and more communities across the country, the local electric company is demanding people have an additional million dollar insurance policy before connecting to the power grid. One such state I know this is common practice in is Texas.

A friend of mine wanted to install a wind generator for electricity but the local power company in Texas would not let him connect to the power grid unless he could show that he had a million dollar insurance policy. He called every insurance company he could think of and no one had ever heard of this insurance policy that he can buy. The reason that he wanted to connect directly to the power grid was so that he did not use a battery bank but instead could sell the energy produced back to the electric company.

Here is how we solved the problem. You need to call your local power company and tell them that you want a reverse meter so that they can measure the amount of energy you are feeding back into the power grid in order to assign you proper credit. There is specific wiring that you need to use that must be approved by your county. They require this specific wiring so that your system does not electrocute a lineman who is working on a line somewhere down from your wind or solar power generator.

Here is where you can save yourself a lot of headache. Do not call your insurance company and ask about a wind turbine or solar panel policy. There is no policy like this. What you do is get an umbrella policy on your homeowner's insurance. This type of policy covers more than what your homeowner's insurance policy does. You might have an insurance company that calls this "secondary insurance". Use the Internet to find an insurance company that will sell such a policy to you.

Just keep in mind that there are quality standards you need to follow if you connect to the power grid. You need a reverse power relay and an automatic transfer switch that will disconnect you from the power grid in case of a power outage. You also need to stay "in phase" with the power grid. When you buy a wind turbine, the manufacturer should tell you everything you need to know to do this. If you are building a wind turbine then the instruction book will tell you what you need to know.

The Downside Of Being Unhealthy

By Lesli Jambers

Are you the type who gets up in the morning feeling no enthusiasm at all to start the day right? Do you go through your daily activities in the office like a robot, performing your tasks in a routine manner that your office mates are calling you Robocop behind your back? When the bell rings signifying the end of the working day, do you breathe a sigh of relief and hurry back to your home in order to dive straight into the bed.

The situations mentioned above are the usual things an unhealthy person can experience over a period of time. Do you like the sound of it? Are you willing to go through this road for the rest of your life?

In contrast, a person who is healthy will wake up with fervor and passion the moment he opens up his eyes. He will also be more fired up to begin his daily chores, maybe even whistling along the way. He will also have plenty of time to socialize with his colleagues as he moves from one department to the other. At the end of the working day, he still has time to grab something to drink at the local pub or does some other chore like grocery shopping or reading books at the nearest library.

Do you see what difference a good health can make in the life of an individual? Being healthy is way better than being sickly. Therefore, it is vital that you strive to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, having regular exercise and visiting your attending physician. Read the succeeding paragraphs to know the drawbacks of being unhealthy.

The first disadvantage is it makes you look older than your actual chronological age. It may sound shallow but it is still the truth. This premise applies in the modern society where first impressions really matter, whether you like it or not. How you look counts as much as the data encoded in your resume. If you look pale and stick thin or if you have a blotchy skin and fat body, you might not be idealized as a good employee. This is due to the fact that bosses or human resource officers may think that if you cannot take good care of yourself, then you might also not learn how to take care of your work. They will remedy this problem by hiring someone more pleasant.

Second, being unhealthy will increase your risk of acquiring horrible lifestyle diseases like diabetes mellitus, hypertensive urgency and even cancer. Bear in mind that the typical person does not get sick in just a few minutes. Most of the time it takes days, weeks and even years of physical abuse on the body to show its ill effects. Recall if you were the type who consumes fatty, salty or excessively sweet food. If you answered yes, then you are classified under a high risk group. Your likelihood of dying young will increase if you do not get any physical workout like a thirty-minute cardiovascular exercise at least three times a week.

Then there is also the subject of vices like too much beer drinking and cigarette smoking. If you are always committing these mistakes, expect liver cirrhosis and lung cancer. Does that sound nice?

Third, an unhealthy state will make you grouchy. You will always come up with excuses not to go to the office. This will reflect badly on your work performance and might cause you to lose your job. If you want to avert this disaster, the take the first step to a healthier you by listening to the advice of your doctor.

DIY Solar Panel System They Do Not Want You To Know About

By Lance Jensen

Has an ordinary man solved the energy crisis by using trash to create a DIY solar system?

In a stunning show of intellect, a writer for Worldsnest, tapped an unlikely source to create a homemade energy system: the garbage can. He has created a 6 kwh solar power system for about $6,000. A comparable 6 kwh solar power system done with PV panels and a professional installer costs about $60,000.

After 20 years of the U.S. Department of Energy funneling tax paying dollars to big oil companies like Exxon and Chevron, neither of them could come up with a solution as cheap and as powerful as this. What a scam! The U.S. Department of Energy and big oil do not want this kind of solution to hit mainstream America because they can not make money off of it. The U.S. Department of Energy wants to be able to tax a solution, while big oil wants to keep you as a dependent customer. They can not stand a solution that involves you producing your own energy from the sun.

Big oil and their lobbyists that buy Congressmen will not let a DIY homemade solution reach mainstream America. They will not and can not allow you to create your own electricity completely free.

But it actually gets far more sinister than just this. Nigerians are being killed in the name of the Oil trade. Nigeria is just one country of many where in order to get oil from a country, we have brought great harm to the average person. In Nigeria, big oil executives are actually telling the government what poor neighborhoods they would like bulldozed in order to make room for luxury housing for oil executives and American workers. You can actually watch a video of houses being demolished and even churches all in the name of oil and gas for the American consumer.

In Burma, U.S. oil corporations financed and assisted the Burmese military junta with the torture and murder of villagers during construction of a pipeline. As the United Nations Security Council condemns the Burmese military junta, calls are increasing for foreign multinational companies to stop working with the Burmese military government. In the United States, much of the criticism has been focused on the California-based oil company Chevron. Chevron is one of the largest foreign investors in Burma and is the only remaining major U.S. corporation with a significant presence there. A Burmese citizen said, "Until the pipeline came, there were no soldiers in the area. In our village we were planting rice. When the pipeline arrived, we had to work for the white people more and more. The soldiers were forcing us to be slaves. If we refused to work, they said they would kill us. Because of the white people, our village was destroyed and we had to flee. They shot at my husband and he ran away in the jungle. I waited for him with my children. A soldier hit me with his gun. I fell and hit my head on a stone and lost consciousness. When I woke up, I saw my baby in the fire. She couldn't even cry. Her body was so burned and all black."

Now keep in mind that an average, ordinary American, albeit very intelligent, created an affordable DIY solar power system. The U.S. Department of Energy has been giving big oil companies like Chevron millions of dollars each year of tax payers money to create an alternative energy solution to break us from our dependency on oil. It sounds like big oil has been running a tax payers scam using the U.S. Department of Energy as the vehicle. During the Bush Administration and Republican control, the Department of Energy was staffed with pro big oil corporate executives and lobbyists. They have come up with very little and yet here is an ordinary citizen without any kind of multi-million dollar tax payer funded research budget, and he has created an affordable solar energy solution.

Here is the video. Prepared to be blown away.

Hydro Power - What Is Hydro Power And How Is It Used?

By Tim McDonald

Using the water's power is an age-old phenomenon. Over the years it has been employed for irrigation and working a variety of machines, including water-wheels. But today, it is used more importantly as a alternative energy source.

Electricity from hydro-power can be generated in three different ways: in hydroelectric dams, using the tides, and through the ocean's waves and currents.

Hydroelectric dams:

Hydro-electric dams produced up to 90% of the world's alternative energy, so it plays a vital role. Here, dams release water through huge turbines, which are spun by the force of the water.

The benefit to this type of hydro-power is the dam serves two purposes - to store water and to produce power. In fact, the water has so much stored energy, that it is capable of generating thousands of megawatts of power to light up an entire city.

However, many governments have come under scrutiny for using hydro-electric dams. These dams tend to flood a lot of land where thriving communities live. They can affect various plants and animals in the region, and cut-off the water supply for communities living downstream.

Tidal Power:

With tidal energy, hydro-power is generated as the tides comes in and goes out.

France and Russia have successfully used tidal power since 1966. One system is used in large bays and estuaries where water from the high tide is dammed up and diverted through turbines at low tide.

Although the tides are very predictable and consistent, the problem with this system is that the turbines only operate every 6 hours (once every tide).

A second, more recent, tidal system looks very much like an underwater wind turbine. Large windmill like turbines are sunk in shallow water, where they are slowly spun by shifting tidal water.

The nice thing about this tidal system is that the technology is advanced and derived from our land-based wind turbines. And water is much denser than air, meaning it takes only a small current to get the turbine spinning.

The drawback is that the current systems can only be built in shallow water, where tidal activity is greatest. This is very limiting since many other economic activities - like oyster farming - occur in the shallows. Furthermore, these structures can damage marine life on the seafloor.

Power from the oceans waves:

This is the youngest of the three hydro-power solutions. The system harnesses the power from ocean surface wave motion, where air displaced by waves is driven through a generator than spins a turbine. The end result is electricity. These generators can either be coupled to floating devices outta sea, or fixed along the shore where seas are rough.

What makes this technology so appealing is it potential to harness over two thousand megawatts of power that the ocean's waves contain.

But, as with all hydro-power solutions, it has potential environmental issues. Conservationists are worried about the impact these structures will have on the coastline's fauna and flora. Also, there is a possibility of water pollution if - for example - the hydraulic fluids accidentally leaked into the sea. This can be expected if the wave generators are constantly battered by rough seas.

Closing thought:

Man has come up with ingenious ways to harness the power of nature to produce electricity, hydro power being one of them. Although it is an important renewable energy for the future, there is still much controversy over its long-term environmental impact.

Knowing When It Is Time To Move Off-Grid

By Dale Green

A stand-alone off-grid system is any type of renewable electricity system that is completely independent of the utility grid. Although this may sound like a dream come true, collecting all of the actual facts can help you to determine whether this is the best move for you.

When you take that final step and set up a stand-alone off-grid system, you are firing your utility company and taking on this responsibility yourself. There will be no service truck coming out in the middle of the night if you suddenly lose power or pinpoint a problem from a power surge. You may very well find yourself respecting that money hungry utility company that you had learned to hate over the years.

If you are counting on saving money on generating your own power, think again. Generating electricity and storing for when you need it, even on a small scale, is very expensive. Large battery banks and engine generators are commonplace with off-grid systems and the initial and long-term operating costs can be very expensive.

The battery usually costs thousands of dollars and will only last for about fifteen years in operation. Since the energy comes from the sun, there will be ore energy to store in a day that may overcharge the batteries if batteries are not large enough. To avoid this, you will need charge regulators for the battery. What will happen to the stored energy that has not been used? Moving to off-grid system will require you to move your schedules as well to be able to catch up with the peak times of the supply. All these considerations and expenses do not correspond to your goal of saving money.

Using the off-grid system for the supply of your electricity may not work the way you planned or expect it. Sometimes your appliances will not operate properly, especially when the power is low. To keep the system going, a generator should be there to back up the system.

Aside from the expenses and the limitations of the system, you also have to consider the maintenance and labor to be applied in going off-grid. Your independence will require you to gain knowledge about the mechanics of the system in case some problems arise. Instead of hiring someone to do the necessary maintenance for your system, you will save more if you know how to do it yourself.

Being independent with your electricity system is not impossible, especially if you have the capacity to be so. But if your sources are limited and you are not yet stable in handling related problems and expenses regarding the system, might as well think of it first. While you are still on the stage of learning more about the system, it is good to stay grid-tied while installing your own off-grid system so you have an available back-up when your system fails.

The grid-tie system is enough for those who are new to using renewable energy. This is utilized by setting up an inverter that connects the utility grid to the main switch of the house. There is no battery needed and the excess energy will go back to the grid. When you are ready to move from grid-tied to off-grid system, perhaps the costs of the batteries and the whole set up is lesser by that time.

Going Green With Passive Solar Design

By Tim McDonald

Passive solar design is one of the simplest ways to improve your home's value and save electricity at the same time.

Passive solar design is a technique of using the sun to naturally heat and light up your home or office. This is achieved by using various building features and materials to improve heating and cooling efficiency. The best part about passive solar design is that it is relatively simple to implement, little maintenance is needed, and your home's market value can increase considerably.

When working out the passive solar potential of your home, you need to consider how it was built and what materials is was built from. The ideal position for your home would be either be on flat land or on a sun-facing slope. Also, in suburban areas, any trees nearby should be deciduous to shade your home in summer, and let through the sunlight in winter.

For any new building, it is best to build it so that the length faces the sun. Another factor determining your home's potential for natural light and heat is the shape, type and size of windows you use.

So how exactly does your home warm up from the sun? In 3 different ways:

1) Direct - this the heat generated from the sun shining directly on an object.

2) Indirect - this is heat given off from objects heated by sunlight.

3) Isolated gain - determined by the airflow in your home.

To ensure the most natural heat from the above three sources, a number of large windows should be placed on the sun-facing side of your home, allowing maximum sunlight in.

All that sunlight and heat in your home is useless, if it cannot be stored and used when the sun is set. The solution is to use heat-absorbent flooring and walls that carry on radiating heat long into the night. A simple way to reduce power cost in winter is to locate to rooms in your house that get the most sunshine at certain times of day. Also, shady rooms should be cut-off (their doors closed) from the rest of the house to retain heat better.

During summer, the right length roof overhangs or eaves can be used to control the amount sunlight and heat in your home. The eaves should be wide enough shade out the intense midday sun, but let the let low-angle sunlight through during dusk and dawn to light up and warm the home. Again, the right trees and shrubs can be planted to regulate the house's seasonal exposure to the sun.

For current buildings, the simplest passive solar design solution is to replace your windows with modern ones, that use various methods to store up 50% more heat. Although they are 10% to 15% more expensive, they pay for themselves in the long-term from all the power saved to heat your home.

Double-glazed or Low-emissivity (Low-E) windows let solar heat in, but keep in the indoor radiant heat. Another way to reduce heat loss is to ensure tight seals around all windows or by using multiple panes that have gaps between them filled with argon or krypton gas.

What also has an effect is the type of window frames you have. Wooden, fiberglass and vinyl window frames are better insulators as opposed to metal frames that conduct the heat too well. When it comes to buying your windows, make sure they are officially labeled either by Energy Start or the National Fenestration Rating Council (for the U.S.). These two bodies give ratings on how energy efficient and effective the windows are, making it easier for you to buy the right windows for your climate and budget.

The whole idea behind passive solar design is to use the sun's natural heat in such a way that it reduces your energy consumption and expenses. So before going out and getting the latest and greatest passive solar design and products, always weigh up the cost involved with how much you will save in energy bills in the long-term.

How To Fix A Toner Error On A Brother Printer

By Amy Nutt

With all of the high tech equipment that is coming on the market today, it is normal for people to encounter technical glitches and other problems. This includes computers and their accessories. A computer printer is one device that sometimes can have technical problems.

For a Brother printer, the message "Toner Error" is normally caused by the improper installation of the drum and/or toner cartridge, or the printer will not recognize the toner. To prevent the printer showing error or not recognize when installing a toner cartridge, follow the steps listed below which was retrieved from FixYa.com, a technical support and troubleshooting site for consumers with computer related problems:

1. Confirm that you are using Genuine Brother Cartridges. Brother strongly recommends that you use only Genuine Brother Brand replacement toner cartridges. Incompatible toner cartridges may damage the printer.

2. Make sure that you are using the correct drum and toner cartridge for your printer. Some cartridges can look similar to Brother Cartridges. Authenticate the part number before using the cartridge.

3. Make sure that the cartridge is not damaged. Remove the toner cartridge by carrying out the following steps:

a) Push the cover release button and then open the front cover. b) Remove the old drum device and toner cartridge unit. Place it on paper to prevent toner splatter. c) Hold lock lever down on the right and pull the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. d) Check the toner cartridge for any broken or missing components. If you find damage, you will have to replace the cartridge

4. If the Brother printer ink cartridge is not damaged, reinstall it into the drum unit. If it was damaged, get a new toner cartridge and reinstall it into the drum unit.

5. Reset the drum/toner unit into the machine and then close the front cover.

6. If the message "Toner Error' continues to appear on the display, unplug the printer and then open the front cover and remove the drum and toner unit.

7. Check inside where the drum was located. On the left side wall, check for a small, black plastic lever/actuator.

8. Check the actuator/lever to see if it is stuck. The actuator/lever is spring loaded and needs to move back and spring forward to operate properly.

If the lever does not move, spring back, or is missing, and your machine is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area or contact Brother Customer Service by calling 1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437)

If the lever moves freely and springs back, continue to Step 9.

9. Reinstall the drum and toner unit, close the front cover and then plug the printer back in.

Capitalism and the Nigerian Oil Trade

By Lance Jensen

The U.S. consumer buys a lot of oil from Nigeria. How much? Over 500,000 barrels per day. Nigeria is the 6th largest supplier of oil to the U.S.

When U.S. oil exploration companies found oil in Nigeria, in order to get the approval from the Nigerian government to drill, U.S. oil companies lied to the Nigerian government telling them that the money flowing into the country was going to be good for the Nigerian people.

This was a lie told to the Nigerian people so that oil companies in the U.S. could profit. What most U.S. consumers dont know is that their consumption of oil is killing Nigeria.

The oil trade has been killing Nigerians for years now. In the meantime, the oil companies have no remorse, in fact, they are buying the votes in Congress to delay or slow solar power development and our independence from oil once and for all.

The video below shows how the oil trade has benefited oil companies and politicians in the U.S. and Nigeria while killing ordinary Nigerians.

A kind of civil war is going on for who should control the oil.

The Nigerian government is demolishing average Nigerian homes and churches to make room for luxury housing for rich oil executives and their American workers.

A pastor is powerless as his church is demolished because of the oil trade. He says, "The oil boom has become the oil doom."

A woman who has just had her home demolished, in the name of oil, clutches her young children and begs, "I need help. I need help."

The Limbaugh Republicans who believe that all business is benevolent and all governments bad need to go back to school and learn about the Nigerian oil trade.

How many people in Nigeria have been killed in the name of oil? This is what happens in a post Republican control era where 8 years of Republicanism and small government have led to a devaluing of human life. It is much like the debate in America on Health Care where Health Insurance companies have denied coverage and charged extortion like monopoly fees forcing some 50 million Americans to be without insurance. These bible thumping Republicans have lost their way. The bible says that money and the pursuit thereof is the root of ALL evil. Yet somehow, this part of the bible is ignored by these Republican zealots.

Welcome to Corporate America after 8 years of Republicanism. Quanta, in their debut album, said it best: This is America Corporate America The place where only the rich count This is America Yeah America Why do they get to be paramount?

Benefits Of Home Wind Power

By David Glen

As more and more people seem to "go green" these days, it's kind of tough not to give a little contemplation to what a person can do to make his or her home more energy efficient. It is definitely wise to invest in an alternative energy solution like wind generators since people are projected to downsize considerable costs to aid in the flailing condition of the environment. Fortunately, there are recent developments in the field of renewable energy making it simple enough to craft one's own residential wind power generator.

So why pick a wind energy source for one's own home? There is a myriad of advantages in securing a wind powered generator other than putting the lights on in a house. First of all, it is naturally replenished meaning it is renewable. Great for the environment as well as it creates less greenhouse gases than most conventional sources. Also, the amount of wind power that can be possibly produced is at least elevated five times as the total energy consumption of the entire planet.

Second, low maintenance cost is involved in getting a wind power source. Residential wind turbines are very practical and are not that expensive. For instance, wind turbines don't entail much maintenance, so the only costs connected with wind power are those of building and installing the turbines. Subsequently, the costs are pretty insignificant making the wind energy almost free for home use. No wonder it is a great addition to a household's wind power generation system.

Wind powered generators will usually not be the only source of power, as the wind patterns may be unstable. The unpredictable nature of the wind can be inconvenient, but since homes are connected to a power grid as well there is a reliable backup plan.

With the rising cost of electricity, owning a wind turbine power system can eradicate the stress of rising electricity bills. Since wind is renewable, it won't run out. Wind turbine owners will see a decrease in electric bills while everyone else deals with increases.

Home owners with residential turbine systems will have a steal of independence from the utility company. If people live in an area that's windy, they should mostly consider installing a wind power source in their roofs, or a residential tower if they have one. They'll probably be surprised to notice how much cash they're going to ultimately save as well. Most residential wind turbines, especially the small-scale ones, have very a small number of moving components and do not require any regular maintenance. They are developed and designed to last up to several years and also operate automatically.

While getting a wind power source is very cost effective, it's also a guarantee that domestic power will not go out since the transformer for the wind generator will help hoard power for later usage. As long as home owners are not using too much electric power, that is.

What's more, there is never a need to worry about when the next big storm comes raging through while cutting electric lines on the neighboring streets. Adding a wind generator to one's residential wind power system is also a great way to cut energy bills and a thrust towards a more environmentally-conscious living.

Going Green Could Save Businesses Billions

By Philip Youngwood

Businesses could make massive savings on their energy consumption by introducing some simple energy saving measures, a new report has found. The joint report by the Environment Agency and the Energy Saving Trust (EST) advises that businesses could save up to 3.5 billion pounds per year.

Ruth Spellman, Chief Executive of the Chartered Management Institute, echoed this sentiment. Speaking on This Is Money she said 'climate change cynics need to recognise the business case for going green.

'A typical employer is likely to use excessive amounts of paper, ink and electricity. If so, a few simple changes, such as printing double-sided or turning off computers at the end of each day could save money.'

New technologies could help boost a business's green credentials and help to reduce the amount spend on utility bills. Video, web and teleconferencing in place of travelling to meetings would help to save time, money and carbon dioxide emissions.

Setting month by month targets will help firms to keep track of their improvements and help them to identify further ways in which energy usage and CO2 waste could be cut.

Business is currently the biggest contributor of carbon waste in the UK, according to figures released by DEFRA (Department for Environmental, Food and Rural Affairs). Total emissions total 191 million tons of carbon in 2007, equivalent to 35% of the UK's total emissions.

The effect of environmentally friendly policies could be more far reaching than simply reduced bills and emissions. Recruitment researchers have found a link between levels of employee engagement and corporate sustainability policies, as green energy issues become increasingly important to younger employees.

In fact, the significance of CSR issues in the minds of employees has become so strong that many recruitment websites have whole sections of their sites dedicated to job listings with environmentally friendly firms.

A Basic Introduction To How Wind Turbines Work

By Jim Samposzi

Since the downturn of the world's natural state, many ecologists and other people who are concerned have been looking day and night for a different source of power. Many have found very promising sources but most are not adequate enough to completely replace other, more natural unfriendly ways of gathering electricity. Our societies still depend on generating power by way of hurting our ozone layer, and air quality.

Wind turbines are structures that harness the force of air to turn a series of blades. This mechanism, sometimes called the rotor, passes the built up wind through a shaft and then through the gearbox, which in turn, sends passes it along to the generator. This process takes place easily and efficiently, but is not able to provide energy for all needs. Wind turbines mostly are installed for farms for automated grain machines and many other machines that depend on a generator when someone cannot be present. Wind turbines are in the thousands in the western parts of our nation, typically in Wyoming and the pacific coast. They are found mainly in fields and remote areas throughout the countryside.

The blades on these devices or pitched. This is so because if the blades were not pitched, they would not turn with a light wind; this would result in a loss of possible power. In addition, these blades cannot start up with winds that are above 55 mph. The reason for this is to reduce the chances of damage to the unit. In addition, a brake exists inside that halts the blades from spinning - if the wind is too heavy, the turbine can be destroyed. In addition, this rotor, does not turn on in winds not capable of reaching 8 mph because its just not worth it.

These power generators are standard in design but rather amazing in capability. Wind turbines all have what is called a yaw drive and yaw motor. The yaw motor and yaw drive allow the rotor to position and re-position it when there is a shift in wind pattern. This mechanism allows for premium harnessing of electricity; if wind turbines did not have this, they would at times be idol at the smallest change of wind pattern.

These incredible machines apply to a few uses but are used mostly by individuals in rural areas. But, wind turbines are known to make loud noises and residents that live close to a collection of them have been known to complain. And, in other areas, some of these large cells of turbines have stationary wind turbines that no longer run. Many individuals are working to get rid of them, while many owners of these fields have no clue where to relocate the wind turbines to.

Although they are capable of harvesting power, some turbines are seen as ancient and no longer needed; other people in the energy industry continue to conceive new and more capable types that are capable of producing more power than ever. A Canadian individual, for instance, has come up with a wind turbine capable of generating 50 kilowatts of electricity! This is a huge milestone and it will be interesting to see if others like it get put to work on generating power.

DIY Home Solar Energy - How to Generate Free Electricity

By Morgan Upchurch

DIY home solar energy offers may benefits to the home owner. It is an excellent means of supplementing your normal supply of electricity that you are currently purchasing from your local power company. In doing so, you will lower your utility bill substantially and save yourself money.

In addition to saving money, home solar energy also saves our environment. The fossil fuels we have all been relying on for so long for our power and fuel, are not only diminishing rapidly, they are leaving behind a carbon footprint that has had a devastating impact on your world. We can each do our part to reverse this trend by using alternative energy sources.

Now that China and India have greatly increase their use of fossil fuels the cost of this limited resource is soaring. They too are adding to the pollution unchecked. Combined with the numerous problems in the Mideast, where much of our oil originates, fuel costs will only continue to rise.

The slowdown of the economy and the rising cost of fuel has made a DIY home solar energy system an excellent option for homeowners. It only makes sense to consider this option. Building solar panels for your home can be done easily by finding plans online that will take you through each step. You can find downloadable e-books with plans or actual videos that take you through each step of the process.

DIY solar panels are very affordable too. If you've ever looked into manufactured solar panels you know they are expensive. By building your own panels using photovoltaic solar cells strung together, you can create your own power for significantly less than the commercially manufactured solar panels. And they work just as well.

The cost of a DIY solar panel is approximately $200. Manufactured solar energy systems for a home are close to $20,000. This is an incredibly large difference in price and makes it well worth your while to consider the do it yourself option. The great thing about DIY solar panels is that they do not require any special construction knowledge to build. Furthermore, you don't need any special materials. Everything you need is available at your local home improvement center.

If you're a little intimidated by the idea of building a DIY home solar energy system for your home, start out slowly. Get some plans and build just one. Even one will create enough free electricity for your home to operate all your appliances. Once you get the hang of it, you can continue to add panels. Each one will be easier than the last.

It is possible, and not even difficult to accomplish, to generate enough electricity with home solar panels to eliminate your utility bill entirely. It is even possible to create an excess of power that you can then sell back to your power company for a profit. Free energy, can you imagine that? You should, it's completely doable.

The Perks Of Being Healthy

By Lesli Jambers

Health has become an important concern for many people in the world today. This is due to the fact that stressors are found everywhere and has caused many people to get sick and even admitted to the hospital for a few days or so.

This has resulted to the mushrooming of many restaurants serving healthy food like organic and vegetarian products, gyms with tailor made programs for their clients and supplementary products like tablets and capsules in the pharmacy.

The next few paragraphs will spill the details on the perks that a healthy person can gain if he is consistently subscribing to a balanced diet, maintaining a regular exercise program, and visiting the general physician regularly. Read on so that you can apply them to your life.

The first advantage when you are healthy is that you will have a great performance at the office. How is this possible? Simple! You can easily do more because your body is in optimum condition. You can achieve many chores and at a faster rate when compared to your officemates who are having a sedentary lifestyle. You are packed with more energy and enthusiasm to last you throughout the long and tiring day. Mental alertness will not pose as a problem during important business transactions and board meetings. Sooner or later, your big bosses will definitely see you like an Energizer bunny and will commend you for it.

Without a doubt, this go-getter attitude will make you stand out from the rest. Other employees will surely wonder what it is that you did that has caught the big bosses' attention. More often than not, your higher ups will reward you with a raise. In some instances, if they are more generous, they will offer a promotion. This is a very attractive lure to think about.

Second, you will avoid getting a lot of lifestyle diseases like diabetes mellitus and hypertensive cardiovascular disease. It is common knowledge that most diseases are a result of poor or wrong nutritional intake such as excessive fat, cholesterol and sugar in the diet. Add to that the almost zero level of physical activities those employees, especially those who are stuck in their office cubicles, are having.

Third, being healthy means that your body has the capacity to live longer. Longevity will help you do more things life especially if you have already retired from your day job. You will have no need to hire a private duty nurse. Instead, you can go on your own to wherever you want to. You can also opt to take your grandkids along with you to the zoo or to the museum for a bonding moment. You can do this even if you reach the ripe old age of 100.

Fourth, it will aid you in dealing with other people in a more pleasant way. If you are at an optimum level of functioning, you have a clear mind to carry out life-changing decisions. You will also be at ease in daily meetings with your superiors and subordinates. This can lead to a positive aura on your part and you will gain a lot of positive attention and commendations. If you compare yourself with sickly or unhealthy people, you will see that they are like grouches with the proverbial chip on their shoulders.

A Guide To Buying Your Own Pellet Stove For Family Use

By Chris Channing

The cost of energy and heat is quickly on the rise. With Winter coming up, even further costs could put a strain on a family's budget. One type of heating stove, the pellet stove, is a way that a family can get the heat they need, while also saving money in the process thereof.

At a glance, you won't notice many differences between a normal wood-burning stove and a pellet stove you would see in a local store. Most of the differences are present on the inside- such as the fact a pellet stove has special machinery to burn pellets of organic material rather than logs of wood. You can obtain pellets made of recycled material to ensure you are doing your best to help the environment.

Maintenance for a pellet stove can be complex if you have no experience with stoves. A pellet stove has more parts than your average wood stove, since it has a feeder, often a motor of some sort, and other parts that require attention once in a blue moon. The owner's manual should keep you up to speed, but you may also consider finding a model that is simple if you don't think you can handle the heat.

A pellet stove will need another source of energy to work the motors of the stove. This can be done through electricity, and often is, but a blackout in energy or having the stove in a remote location would require that you have the option to use gas. Verify that the model you have is able to use gas as a secondary energy source.

Pellet stoves are going to be large in size. They also have requirements for where they are installed. You wouldn't want to install it in an area near burnable items, for instance. The best location is usually in a garage if applicable- but do be sure that the specifications are followed before buying the stove. That way you know your purchase won't be in vain.

Pricing is important when shopping. Don't go for the least expensive model without giving it a second thought, but also lose the type of thinking that demands you pay more for quality. Instead make the buying decision based on what you need. A heavy duty model is unnecessary for the home- and will cost thousands of dollars. A smaller model for home usage may only be several hundred or more.

In Conclusion

The pellet stove is a great addition to any home. It provides a great amount of energy for the cost of the fuel source, can be used to burn recycled products, and is rather inexpensive compared to other stoves. The savings will start rolling in as soon as you install it.

DIY Home Solar Energy - Make Your Own Solar Panels

By Morgan Upchurch

There are so many reasons why you should take advantage of DIY home solar energy that it's actually kind of hard to know where to begin. The greatest benefit that leaps out to so many is the opportunity to create an endless amount of free electricity to power your home.

As China and India continue to increase their use of fossil fuels the problem has only worsened. It is time for us to turn the tide and lead the world to cleaner, more affordable energy alternatives. Much of the oil we are currently using comes from the Mideast. It is time to free ourselves from our dependence on this unreliable and unstable source.

A DIY home solar energy system is an alternative energy source that is a viable option for the majority of homeowners. Anyone can build a solar panel using plans available on the internet. Search under solar panel plans and you will quickly find eBooks that you can download, videos that will take you through the process step by step, and more.

Constructing your own home solar energy system is relatively inexpensive, especially when compared to commercially built and installed solar panels. You can build your own photovoltaic solar cells and string them together into a solar panel that is every bit as good as a commercially constructed one for a fraction of the cost.

Commercial solar energy systems for a home of average size can run upwards of $20,000 and above. You can build your own solar panel and install it yourself for about $200. And once more, there are no special skills required to build your own solar panels and all the parts that you will need can be purchased at your neighborhood hardware store.

You can begin your foray into DIY home solar energy slowly by building a single panel which will generate enough electricity to run many of your household appliances. When you begin to become proficient at building the panels you can build more and add them to what you have already created which will of course enhance your ability to generate electricity free of charge.

In fact, if you build enough solar panels, you can generate enough electricity not only to power your entire home, but to produce an excess that you can then sell back to the power company. No longer will you be paying them, they will be paying you! That is a concept worth thinking about! What's most exciting about DIY solar panels is that they make it possible for anyone to create their own electricity.

Tips For Using Renewable Energy Sources

By Randy Yale

A great place to start a renewable energy campaign is in the home. Converting to renewable energy sources means using environmentally-friendly renewable energy. Renewable energy is naturally replenished energy generated from natural resource, such as sunlight and wind, and even from the rain, tides, and geothermal heat.

In 2006, about 18% of global final energy consumption came from renewables, with traditional biomass, such as wood-burning, and hydroelectricity being the largest renewable sources.

In your home, this might involve installing solar panels, a wind turbine or maybe an EPA-certified wood stove that uses renewable firewood. Here are a few ideas as to how best to get started:

1: Calculate your Energy Need.

One motivator is simply to look at your utility bills for the last year and see what you spend in electricity and gas. Renewable energy options often are cost-saving in the long-run. And know that if you are running energy-gobblers, like that high-voltage hair dryer, then you'll need to high-performance solutions.

2: Research your Climate

Your options are affected by the climate. It makes sense, of course, that if you have a lot of sunshine, solar energy might be the best option. And if you live in a windswept location, you might want to look into wind turbines.

3: Contact the National Energy Agency

The mission of the national energy agency is to promote sustainable energy. They would be able to answer some of your queries about renewable energy or at least point you in the right direction. And they would have a wealth of tips for how to cut down your general household energy consumption, such as switching the dry cycle "off" on your dishwasher, letting your dishes dry naturally or hanging your clothes out to dry. Energy agencies also would ask you to check that you have adequate insulation and start replacing replace old appliances with EPA Energy Saving appliances.

4: Switch to Renewable Energy Sources

Maybe start by looking at installing a solar oven or a solar hot-water heater. You can have solar panels installed for hot water heating, or to power appliances like computers and fans. Or install a wood-burning stove for the winter months. Just make sure it's an EPA-certified wood stove, as they use far less firewood or pellets.

With global climate concerns, the costs of energy rising, and government involvement, renewable energy solutions are becoming more of a viable solution for individuals.

An Introduction To Residential Wind Power

By David Glen

Anywhere that there are relatively strong winds is a good candidate for a wind energy system to partially or even totally replace the power from your local utility. A residential wind turbine can help you to meet the energy needs of your home or business, significantly reducing costs. These turbines may be and often are used along with a solar power system, since many of the parts needed for one are also used for the other. A wind turbine is installed on a tower and transforms the kinetic energy of the wind into electrical energy which may be used to provide power in the home.

The majority of homes which have a residential wind power system use power from the local utility company in addition to their wind turbines. The reason for this is that most wind turbines have a cut-in speed (usually 7 to ten mph). If the wind speed falls below this, then power must be drawn from the local grid. When the wind is moving faster than the cut-in speed, then the turbines begin supplying electricity to the home, reducing the need for electricity from the utility company. If you generate more power than you use, it can be fed back into the power grid - and your utility company will pay you for it!

The typical wind turbine system owner sees a savings of around 50% on their electricity costs; depending on weather conditions and the home's energy needs, this may be slightly more or less.

Wind systems are very sensitive to the average wind speed in the area, so if it were a concern, a turbine owner should have at least an average wind speed of 10 miles per hour and be paying at a lesser fee for electricity.

You can easily find out your area's average wind speeds to determine if a wind power system is like to work well for your home. If your area is a breezy one, you may find that you can generate much of your own electrical power by installing a residential wind turbine.

A typical residential wind system makes less noise and does not interfere with a television's reception at all. A wind turbine is easily rigged to virtually any residence without the hassle to change any appliances or wiring. In most cases, the utility will set up a second utility meter to gauge how much excess electricity it is purchasing from the turbine owner.

You can choose from ready to install wind turbine systems which are ready to go with a minimal amount of work or purchase the parts you'll need to build and install your own residential wind power system. If you're mechanically inclined, you can save a tidy sum by installing your own system, though a ready to install system has the advantage of coming with customer support in case you have any questions as you install. Homeowners should ponder which of these systems is best for their home and decide accordingly.

Installing wind power generation at home also helps the environment. Wind turbines generate no pollution and by means of wind power, they can counterbalance tons of air pollutants and greenhouse gases which all cause climate change.

You Do NOT Need Solar Panels To Slash Your Energy Bill

By Todd Dornan

I lowered my energy bill without solar panels. Almost everyone thinks that the only way to lower your energy bill is with solar panels. This is not true. I was about to lower my energy bill by 23% and now I'm going to share with you exactly how I did it.

Window Insulation - The best thing you can do to lower your power bill is to make sure your windows are insulated properly. If you only have single pane windows, you are losing a lot of money. Single pane windows are terrible insulators. You need to upgrade to double pane windows. Double pane windows will save you a lot of money. Take a room by room approach as double pane windows are expensive.

Attic Ventilation - The next best thing you can do to save money each month involves attic ventilation. Attics need to vent air correctly this is why they usually have vents. If the vents get clogged with dust, your attic will get too hot during the summer. You should clean out the vents in your attic. If your attic does not have vents, you should consider having a few put in. You can go to your local hardware store and purchase attic ventilation kits.

Air Conditioner Filters - A dirty air filter makes your air conditioner work much harder which means it takes more energy to do its job. Changing your air conditioner filters once a month will save you money off your monthly energy bill.

Change Your Stove Fan Filter - The fan that is located above your stove will get backed up with grease quickly. Fortunately, there is a filter in this fan that catches all that grease. The problem is that most people do not know that this fan even has a filter so they never change it. When this filter is clogged with grease, your fan has to work twice as hard costing you even more money.

Save Money By Turning Off Lights - You should go around to all your lights and lower the wattage on all your bulbs. Do not leave lights on when you leave the room. Do not use outside lights. A single outside light that uses a standard 60-watt bulb will cost you about $10 a month. Forget using dimmer lights as they don't save you very much. Use fluorescent lights whenever and wherever possible.

Learn How To Calculate Energy Costs - You need to learn how much the things in your home are costing you in terms of energy cost each month. The formula is wattage / 1000 x hours used per day x your kWh charge (found on your monthly bill) / 30 days in a month = total cost of energy per month for that appliance. Let us do an example problem. If you are using a central air conditioner for 10 hours per day during the summer, it is costing you: 4000 / 1000 x 10 x 0.15 x 30 = $180 a month.

How to Make Your Own Homemade Solar Panels

By Danny Ramirez

Everyone knows the bad news about the economy and our shrinking supply of oil. As a result, a lot of people began searching for alternative energy solutions. An entire new industry has popped up in the homemade solar panels sector. So why the buzz about these homemade solar power systems? For one, they reduce the dependency on oil. But what makes them so popular is that people can build their own solar power system cheap, I mean under $200 cheap! These homemade solar power systems use solar panels to charge a battery bank. The battery bank can power everything in your home, even during the night.

Now anyone can lower their power bill by 80% or more by building their own, homemade solar panels and solar power system for less than $200! There is a business called Earth4Energy that sells a step by step guide that explains how to do it.

The features of the guide are: Full and detailed instructions which can be easily understood by a layman or the unskilled for how to make a solar panel, exactly how to obtain the components available in your neighborhood hardware store for building the homemade solar power system, detailed instructions on how to construct a wind power generator that is not available anywhere else, and a money back guarantee if you are not saving hundreds of dollars per month on your energy bill after using the system for eight months.

There are also videos that explain things if you are a visual learner.

It still seems incredible to me that anyone can follow this guide and build a homemade solar panels and wind power system and save 80% off their monthly energy bill. I think the reason we do not hear about this in mainstream media more is because of special interests blocking this kind of technology. Think about it. The big energy companies hate you for producing your own energy and the government hates you because they can not tax it.

I built my own homemade solar panel system and am saving about 40% off my monthly power bill. The reason I am saving only 40% is that I'm starting off small, with only a few panels and a very small battery bank. I plan on expanding my solar power system when I get more money.

DIY Wind Turbine - Learn How to Harness the Wind

By Teegan McElroy

The development of alternative energy sources is becoming more and more popular among homeowners every day. The rising cost of energy and the growing awareness of the limits of our non-renewable energy resources have made seeking new means of generating power the right direction to take. DIY wind turbines and solar panels for home use can be constructed and put in place for a very small amount of time and money.

DIY alternative energy projects are very inexpensive and easy to build. Anyone can construct a wind turbine for less than $200 and provide all the energy needed for an average home. Solar panels can be built for less than $200 as well. Linked together these panels will generate electricity for your home. Everything you need can be purchased at your local hardware store or home improvement center and the tools required are probably already in your toolbox.

Building wind turbines and solar panels is so easy that anyone can do it. All you need is a set of plans. Many plans are available on the internet for under $50 and some include a video to will walk you through the process step by step. These easily obtainable plans and videos make building alternative energy generators at home a snap.

Ready-made wind turbines built by manufacturers can be quite expensive running into the thousands of dollars. So if you're loaded and want to save some time and effort then go ahead and get a preconstructed windmill. But I'm guessing because you're reading this article that you would prefer to do it yourself and spend your money on other things.

Did you know that you can save thousands of dollars a year on your electricity bill by using alternative energy sources like the wind and sun? You will absolutely receive savings from the IRS in the form of tax breaks for using wind and or solar power. In addition to that you will also increase the resale value of your home.

We will be seeing more and more people taking advantage of readily available renewable resources such as the sun and wind to power their homes. All over the world in just about every civilized country people are turning to DIY wind turbines and solar panels. Not only is there a substantial savings in generating your own electricity but there also is a palpable satisfaction derived from knowing that you are doing your part to reduce your carbon footprint.

How much energy you create using DIY wind turbines will depend on a couple of things. If you happen to live in an area of the country where wind is abundant you will be able to produce a large amount of energy. In a less windy location you will be able to produce less. The size of the wind turbine also has an impact on the quantity of energy it can capture. Studies have shown that on an average day, a DIY wind turbine can power an average home with just a few hours of moderate wind.

A wind turbine generates electricity through a simple process. As the wind turns the blades on the windmill, kinetic or physical energy is created. This energy is then trapped and stored in a battery where it can be used whenever it is needed. With this stored energy, the wind does not need to be blowing in order to have a supply of energy.

A DIY wind turbine can save the average individual up to 80% on their power bill. Some people can generate enough power to provide electricity for all of their needs. Those who have the perfect set up are able to create more than enough energy. The excess energy can then be sold to the local power company to create income. In the best case scenario you will not only save money, you actually make money.

Are Scrappage Schemes Really Environmentally Motivated?

By John Vincent

Scrappage schemes abound throughout Europe and America. All of them offer financial incentives to scrap working but older vehicles as trade-ins for brand new ones. In order to qualify the owner must consent to the older vehicle being crushed after the sale is complete.

These Scrappage schemes have all been hailed for addressing environmental concerns. Some regions even state emissions requirements for the new vehicles being bought.

This environmental angle has also been pushed by the motor trade. For example the chief executive of the UK's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Ltd has been quoted as saying "smaller, lower CO2-emitting cars are taking the lion's share of registrations, which will have a positive impact in reducing emissions..."

I'm sorry to say it's actually a load of nonsense. There is no environmental benefit to scrapping a perfectly serviceable car and replacing it with a brand new one. In fact the opposite is true as it takes more energy to produce one new car than it does to run an existing vehicle for an additional 100,000 miles.

So are our world leaders being advised incorrectly? Are they being sold an environmental lie? No I don't think so. I think you'll find they know exactly what they are doing. We live in Capitalist societies and our motives and those of our governments are almost always entirely economic.

But getting the dirty old bangers with stinking black exhaust fumes is a good thing I hear people cry and I have to agree. But Scrappage isn't the answer. The people who drive dangerous heaps on a shoestring budget are quite simply not the target audience of the schemes no are they? People close to the poverty line can't afford to buy brand new cars even with a 10% reduction in purchase price no can they?

The people who will take part in, and benefit from, Scrappage schemes are middle income, middle class professionals. They are the group of society most likely to be considering the purchase of a brand new car and also, coincidentally, the same group of people most likely to be persuaded by a cleverly worded advertising campaign about saving the environment. Unfortunately they are also the drivers of the older but perfectly serviceable vehicles which we should be encouraging the continued use of rather than buying new.

If you're taking what I've said with a pinch of salt but are still reading this article, might I suggest you actually ask the new car dealers what vehicles they have scrapped under the scheme. I believe you won't find very many smoking old bangers on the list.

Using a Skip to Clear Out Your House

By Lily McKinnon Smith

Every once in a while we all need to have a clear out. If we dont de-clutter our lives of all the junk that we accumulate then we will surely sink beneath it all. It can often be cost effective to book a rubbish skip for the purpose as it allows you to throw away all of your junk in one convenient go rather than making repeated trips to the local council tip.

Additionally it is increasingly common that these days many of the better skip companies will segregate your waste for recycling rather than just tipping it in landfill. There are several advantages to this, firstly it will ease your conscience as you are helping the planet rather than pollution it, but also, you are saving future resources through your recycling.

When skips are full, the company will come and collect them and all of the waste will be taken to a sorting pad to be separated. Once all of the wood, plastic, metals, glass etc. have been separated from each other, they are then stored in bulk for commercial processing later on. The hire of the skip costs the customer no more than a traditional skip that would just empty it all to landfill, and the company makes up for the extra labour costs by selling the resources taken from the skips on to production line companies.

Working out how big you need your skip to be can be tricky. It is better to hire one that is slightly larger than you anticipate that you will need because it is better to not quite fill one than to fill on completely and either have to hire another one or just not get rid of all of your waste.

You can also order lockable skips to prevent fly tippers from filling your skip for you. It is an age old problem that has caused many arguments between neighbours since time began, but there is nothing more irritating than paying for a skip and having someone in essence steal it from you. For this reason, lockable skips are a huge boon and will help you to relax.

If you wish to have your skip placed out on the street, then complying with health and safety laws is a must as you could find yourself liable for an accident if one should occur. However, your skip hire company should be able to take care of most, if not all of it for you. You will need a street permit from the council to put it out on the road which the skip company should do for you without any extra charges, as well as fitting it with sufficient night lights and coning off the skip.

A Brief Description of Indian Furniture

By Michelle Santana Smith

Indian furniture is recognisable by its distinctive style and design and is usually made of a dark hardwood. The individuality of any piece of Indian furniture gives any room a warm personality and its reputation as beautiful cultural furniture is demonstrated by the intricate artwork and craftsmanship that is clearly visible on every piece.

The materials used to make Indian furniture are usually, rosewood, sheesham or mango wood. The wood usually carries a traditional, rustic heir with it and most pieces are very versatile and will fit in nicely in any kind of room.

Many pieces of Indian furniture have a beeswax finish which provides it with new sheen, as well as accentuating the old, traditional warmth conveyed in the wood used. It is this warm, traditional feel that makes Indian furniture popular mainly as bedroom furniture.

Something that is quite often used in Indian furniture to give the pieces more of an artistic look, is a jali. This involves carving almost a latticed screen into an area of the piece, usually including a particular pattern or design into it using geometry and calligraphy.

The shisham tree, an Indian native deciduous tree, is used to make the shisham or sheesham style of Indian furniture. Also known as Tahli, Indian Rosewood Sisu and Sissoo, its preferred habitat is along riverbanks but can grow more or less anywhere and trees have been seen up to 1300m tall.

In the shisham trees native lands, the average temperature is between 10C and 40C, however is has been known to range to below 0C and above 50C, meaning that the shisham tree can withstand a massive range of temperatures. Not only this, but it can survive 3-4 months of drought as well as an average annual rainfall of 2000mm making it one of the most tough plants in the world.

Mango wood is a stunning hardwood with a distinctive grain pattern and an overall rustic look. It is used to make several ranges of Indian furniture, one of which being mango cube, which is usually enhanced by staining the wood dark brown with a clear lacquer finish, again giving it the rustic antique look while remaining polished and perfect.

Indian furniture is most commonly used as bedroom furniture due to its attractive, warm and rustic feel, however because of its versatility, it will make a suited addition to more or less any room.

Hot Tubs And Solar Power

By Pat Janeski

The environment is on the tips of everyones tongue now days and interest in saving energy is high. The sun and wind are getting more attention than ever as an energy source and people want to learn how to harness that power. Solar cells are dropping in price and more people buy them and the technology is perfected.

Anyone looking for ways to save electricity might be looking into buying a solar hot tub instead of the regular kind. Unfortunately though, there really isnt such a thing as a solar hot tub on the market. There are several reasons for this but the main one is that the technology is too expensive. You see, a hot tub or Jacuzzi needs to be kept warm 24 hours a day and the sun is obviously not out that long. Therefore, some sort of solar capability along with a battery and energy storage would have to be made for such a thing as a solar hot tub to work.

Another reason why they dont exist is because there are few places in the country that get enough sun for this idea to be remotely feasible. Demand for such a unit does not exist and so manufacturers will not make something that they cannot turn a profit on. A hot tub that runs 100% of the time on solar power is just not something we will ever likely see.

People who are still interested in such an idea may want to look into buying their own solar cells and constructing their own makeshift unit. Of course you want to make sure that you live in a place that gets plenty of direct sunlight or you will be wasting your time. Additionally, this is not something that a novice will be able to do easily. Something like attaching solar panels to a hot tub and actually having it work would be something best left to an electrician or someone with experience.

At this time of heightened awareness of the environment, you might think that some hot tubs would be made to use with sunlight. However, it seems this is not the case and anyone wishing to make their own solar hot tub should do some legwork and research first. Make sure you go to a hot tub dealer and ask what models might be better for such a transformation and they might be able to get you started down the right path.

Just Exactly How Does Residential Solar Power Work?

By Sam Deane

Every day when you feel the heat of the sun on your back you are benefiting from a form of solar power. That giant star in our solar system provides heat for the earth and light. However, we must ask ourselves, What is residential solar power and how does it work?

Basically Residential Solar Power Is ...

The energy given off by the sun is a form of radiation. Planet Earth and other planets get the benefit of this life-giving UVA or UVB radiation. Put another way, the benevolent sun is showering the earth with its warmth and light.

Most of the sun's rays are bounced back into space as they enter the Earth's atmosphere, but enough of is absorbed by the earth, giving us enough energy to fuel every home across the planet. Sadly, we still have not yet achieved this level of solar power production.

All those solar panels you see on rooftops and in back yards. They are a lot more streamlined these days. There was a time when only the rich could afford solar power for homes.

I'm about to get technical with you now. Don't worry. I'll go slowly!

At this point I am about to start talking in scientific terms, but bare with me. It wont be for long I assure you!

The Science of Residential Solar Power

Solar panels are made up of a grouping of photovoltaic solar cells. These cells are almost always made of silicon or some other semi-conductive material. They are then arranged uniformly, positive to negative, end to end, to create the solar panel device.

You get the best effect by placing this panel at the south of the building to capture the largest amount of sunlight. When the sun hits the solar panel, the sun's radiation is absorbed into the solar cell as energy.

The light energy (photons) hits the solar cells and electrons are knocked loose.

Now that they are freed up, they rush to the other end of the array and in their motion, the selfsame electricity you use to power your appliances in your home is made.

Right now though, the electricity is still in a DC format (aka Direct Current). Traditional houses require AC current (aka Alternating Current), so some more work needs to be done to render this a useful operation.

Here, the residential solar power system starts to work its magic. The electricity from the solar panel is sent to a DC disconnect device. This device interrupts and changes the flow of the electricity from the array.

Right about now, you can use one of two methods to send the electricity around your home. You could directly connect your residential solar power system to your homes electricity system. You will then have to pass the electricity through an inverter to transform your DC current into AC current.

You are almost ready to use the electricity. It passes through the inverter to be used by your AC outlets in your home.

The other option is to invest in a few deep cycle batteries and direct all that extra solar energy you don't use in the day into them so they can store it for a later time when you might need it more.

Conclusion

Using residential solar power will reduce your domestic utility bills. When you do introduce your solar power system you will know that you are ahead of the curve, foreseeing the future that, without doubt, will be crying out for alternative energy sources that are renewable and sustainable.

The Useful Magnetic Energy Generator For Electricity Generation

By Jozel Max

The magnetic properties are utilized by the magnetic power generator to provide free electrical power to the household. This is essentially achieved by utilizing the strength of the magnets on the inside of generator. The major advantage for such an energy source is its permanent type, provides clean output, and environment friendly nature. This sort of energy to power the household energy requirements is almost free of cost using this power generator.

The generator uses the attraction and repulsion properties of magnets to generate current throughout the day. The device provides efficiency close to 500% as suggested by experts who have studied this generator model. Another major advantage is that while distributing power from the energy sources of this generator there is no need of any power lines. The energy can be distributed to the household by avoiding the use of power cables. In order to maintain the generator certain diagnostic tests need to be done on the generator to provide an assessment regarding the state of the system.

This generator does not allow any sort of harmful emission to spread into the surrounding atmosphere and prevents the spread of excess heat into the environment. Another distinct feature is that it controls the spread of airborne matter into the environment. The generator keeps working without being bothered by any sort of climatic changes happening around it.

The magnetic power generator prevents excess heat from coming out of the generator and affecting the surrounding environment. It also stops harmful emission from getting into the environment. In case of airborne related pollution, the generator has certain controls put in place to prevent the spread of such particulates into the environment. Another important feature for this generator is that the climate changes do not influence its working capabilities.

Certain high-speed types of magnetic generators are used in a variety of power appliances. These generators are small and extremely efficient while generating power. Another advantage is that they are made of magnetic bearings, which does not require lubrication and have less maintenance issues and costs.

These magnetic bearings help create generators which are small, cost effective, and faster in power generation as compared to other generators. These magnetic bearings also help reduce the weight of the generator, making it lighter and easy to handle. The design for these generators can be made without having any gearbox, since the generator has the capacity to operate at the speed of the driver. This removes the maintenance worries associated with lubricating and maintaining the gearbox.

Distributed power applications use this kind of magnetic-bearing technology in their compressors and produce more electrical energy per horsepower as compared to the conventional generators.

The main areas of operation for these magnetic energy generators are operations with demand of power supply that has the problem of controlling or scheduling, operations where potential sources of energy have not been used, used to provide power to remote, off-grid locations and helps provide power for rescue or reconstruction operations at disaster sites.

Transitioning Alternative Energy

By Dale Green

Our planet has been very abundant in offering us renewable sources of energy for our needs and providing alternative energy in many different forms. Many corners of the earth have used renewable power in one way or another but usually just where mechanical electricity, powered by petroleum, was not readily available.

The sun, wind and properties of the earth itself, will never cease to feed us the energy that we crave but we have to be willing to develop, store and generate its current form into usable power for our use. With our fossil fuel supply now being depleted, a serious approach is being taken to transitioning into alternative energy sources.

Generating energy from these alternative fuel sources is not very complex since the steps utilized to turn fossil fuels into crude and refine it into different types of gas, diesel and petroleum blends were all unknown processes at one point. What is needed is the application of this innovative skill towards alternative energy research.

While the transition of moving from one form of energy to another is foreign to most people, such a step is necessary for those wishing to preserve the world as we know it. This can help us not only control global warming while still maintaining the lifestyle people are accustomed to.

One example of a renewable fuel and the price tag involved is solar electricity. The cost of purchasing all of the solar equipment is still more expensive than our present mechanically generated power. This is one of the changes that we have to learn to bear in transitioning into alternative energy. It is impossible to just stop using petroleum-based energy and replace it with solar or wind power overnight. There are going to be many changes and expenses for everyone to bear.

Generating electricity is basically the same as it was when it was first discovered in the early 1800s by British scientist Michael Faraday. There are seven different methods of changing energy into electrical energy but the most common is electromagnetic induction, transforming kinetic energy into electricity. Putting even the basics of electricity to work for us in an entirely different mode, however, takes a bit of training, education and skill.

Photovoltaic technology has been developing at a high rate of speed and is very promising. The problem with these types of photovoltaic solar panels centers on the fact the cost will be much higher than the costs of mechanically generated power. Capacity is now growing at a rate of 40% and countries such as Germany, Japan, and states such as California and New Jersey are leading the way. Hopefully, in the near future, the market will grow and that will alter the situation to where solar power becomes more feasible than petroleum.

There will always be better methods associated with creating new sources of power. These developments will come after looking over both our past mistakes and wise decisions. This will eventually lead to the proper development of alternative energy source that work properly and in a cost effective manner.

Installing Your Own Solar Powered Pump Fountain

By Tim McDonald

If you have been thinking of making a more eco-friendly garden, have you considered getting a solar powered pump birdbath? Actually, have you thought of making one yourself?

So how will a solar powered pump birdbath benefit you?

The benefits are:

a: The moving water in the fountain stop its from going stagnant

b: The fountain is wireless and does not have to be plugged in

c: The pump runs on DC power, so no inverter is needed.

d: It requires little power (about 6 volts) so you only need a few small solar panels.

e: The fountain usually operates during the day when the birds are out in the sun, so batteries are not essential

f: It is possible to make the entire system your yourself, helping you save money

g: The birdbath is wireless making it very portable.

So, what do you need to make your own solar powered pump fountain?

The easiest way is to simply buy a birdbath with a pump and fountain already fitted. Then all you need to do is wire up some small solar panels.

The more inexpensive, but do-it-yourself method would be to buy a birdbath that is capable of housing a fountain. Then all you need to do is buy the pump, tubing, wiring, solar panels and batteries (optional).

If you want to save money, and build your own system, then you will need:

A Birdbath

It does not matter what birdbath you buy, but make sure there is a place for the fountain to be added. A few options for you would be copper, terracotta, cascading, ceramic, or resin birdbath fountains.

The Fountain Attachment:

Depending on whether you want the water to trickle or spout out the top, you can get the right attachment from most hardware stores or garden centers.

Small DC Pump:

Next is the pump. Usually a small birdbath only needs a small 6 volt DC fountain pump. But if you have a larger birdbath that pumps more water, and at a greater height, then a larger pump will be needed.

Thin, Flexible PVC Pipe:

This tubing generally should be narrow enough to keep the water pressure high, so that the water can be pumped properly. My advice would be to visit the nearby garden center and have a look at what piping is used.

Silicon Sealant:

This is one of those essentials that you should already have lying around the house. It will help seal all those joins and also protect electrics from water damage.

Solar Panels:

This is what sets this off-grid system apart from conventionally powered birdbath fountains. The pump will help determine how many solar panels you need. For a 6 volt DC pump, you will need at least a 6 volt solar panel, but rater double up on the solar panels for times when the sun is weak.

NB: You have 2 alternatives for the solar panels:

1 : Buy a small commercial portable solar power kit from a department store such as Target.

2 : The cheaper, DIY route and make the panel yourself. Luckily this is actually rather simple for anyone to learn to do. So if you want to learn to make your own, then carry on reading to the end...

For the solar panel to operate effectively it needs to be fitted in a frame and angled in the direction of the sun. Placing it under a tree will not help.

Can anyone build this birdbath?

With the right tools and parts and a the right attitude you could have a fully functional solar powered pump birdbath in an afternoons work. It really depends on your level of experience, but many of our friends (even housewives) have managed to make their own fountains.

If you want you could also add some type of power storage to the system. That way the batteries can store power, which can be used to operate the pump 24 hours a day. To have this option you will need:

1) Deep cycle battery:

You will need deep cycle battery that is capable of storing a charge for a long time. A 12 volt one should be more than enough to power a 6 volt pump.

Charge Controller:

This is not essential, but it prevents your battery from over-charging. So it can really extend the life of the battery. It will be wired up between the solar panels and the battery.

Other than it being really cheap to make, the big advantage of making your solar powered pump fountain is that once you have that skill it is there with you forever. You could even make it as an eco-friendly gift for your friend's next birthday.

About the LEED Green Associate Exam

By Charles Andrews

Throughout history man's technology has only managed to do more bad to the planet than good. Technology certainly made our lives easy but at the expense of our planet. Much of the technology we use today is responsible for many evils done to our environment. If we don't begin to shift quickly towards green technology the time when we find ourselves in trouble we cannot dig ourselves out of is not very far. People such as like those of LEED Green Associate believe that education is the key.

When you look at green technology it gives you all the convinces of regular technology minus the harm it does to the planet. However a couple of decades back green technology was considered impractical because it was too expensive to implement. This in turn slowed down the momentum of green technology.

The latest news however is that the resistance towards the cost of implementing green technologies have lost momentum. Today people realize the savings they get when they implement green technologies in their lives. This is a boost for green technologies in the right direction.

President Obama announced increasing investment in green technologies. The growing movement has shown potential for the future of sustainable energy. The stimulus package which has been set forth is planned to create 3. 5 millions job opportunities for the green sector over the coming two years. However the private sector is still lagging behind in terms of progress.

However the private sector's reasoning behind green technologies is not totally unfounded. In the beginning green technology was expensive and difficult to implement, this meant that many small businesses just stopped thinking about them. They didn't want to invest in something in which the return was so low while the investment was very high. However in recent years the demand for green technology has meant that there has been a steady decline in the cost.

The National Association of Realtors have reported that the cots related to sustainable and green construction technology has decreased to quite an extent. In the most recent estimates green construction will cost around 1-1. 5% higher than normal construction costs. However if you look at the energy savings it stands at around a 25% savings average.

What LEED Green Associate really does is it educates people about various green technologies and their implementation. Keeping in mind that the future of our technology in coming years is almost exclusively going to be green, people need to be trained to speed up the process. What used to be thought of as an expensive exercise is now considered a slightly expensive alternative to conventional technology.

When people see the amount of money they can save with such technologies it's not a hard thing for them to invest a few extra dollars in green technology. Today the possibilities that this great technology holds is boundless. What is required though is education about green technologies and how it should be used. The trend towards green technologies has gained momentum but more momentum is required in order for these technologies to fully replace conventional ones.

Solar Power and Green Energy in Your House

By Chris Ulrich

Solar energy is one of the hottest conversations in today's marketplace. With government incentives at record highs-and some utilities paying you to convert to solar-now is the time to learn more and find out how you can save money with solar energy.

But what is solar energy? How does it work? Can it really generate electricity?

Solar energy reins-in the power of the sun. When sunlight hits photovoltaic cells (they look like giant computer chips made of silicon) the photons in the sunlight make all electrons to be freed from the silicon. If you can catch those electrons, you have electricity.

Think of it like this: you are playing billiards (shooting pool) and you shoot the cue ball into another ball. What happens? The white ball bounces insets that other ball into motion as well.

When sunlight hits the solar cell, it ricochets off and pushes the electron in motion. Electricity is made of electrons. The more electrons you can push in motion-and harness-the more electricity you can generate.

For an great article on solar energy and other green energy, visit this page at NASA http://www.nasa.gov/centers/ames/greenspace/clean-energy.html

How does this help you in your home? The government is pushing hard for solar energy. $19 billion dollars has been set away to help advocate solar energy throughout our country. The federal government as well as many state governments and utilities, will literally pay you to start using solar energy.

Why would they do this? First, we want to reduce our dependency on foreign oil. Second, burning fossil fuel is terrible for the environment. Solar energy, on the other hand, is completely clean. There are no byproducts. There aren't carbon emissions. It is a very clean and pure way of generating electricity. Third, the government wants to develop the solar industry in this country which will create more and more jobs and opportunities.

Solar energy is not cheap, however. Solar energy for a house can cost $25,000. Do not stop reading this article! There is great news. The government and utilities will rebate you up to 70% of the cost of the system. In this example, you would get tax credits and rebates for around $14,000. The net price to you is $6000. If you were to finance this, you can pay about $50-$75 per month. You may say this much or more in your electric bill! Even if you don't, you not only done something tremendously for the environment, but have also increased the value of your house by about $20,000! If you're going to resell your home, this not only increases value of nature home more desirable than other houses on the market.

There are also laws preventing local government from raising your taxes when you add solar energy to your house. We cannot give you specific tax advice-you must consult with your accountant or attorney.

Home Solar Now Very Affordable In Australia

By Sam Stoker

Something like this should be done in the United States. But it will not. Big oil has too much money and can buy too many votes. They block legislation like this in the U.S. The U.S. who invested solar panels and started the solar power industry continues to fall further and further behind the rest of the world.

But this is not a negative story about big oil in America or Republicanism but instead the great news for the home solar industry in Australia.

The Senate in Australia passed the Renewable Energy Target (RET) bill which gives $7,000 to anyone who installs at least a 9 panel (1.5kW) solar energy system.

The Coalition and business and green lobby groups pressured the Australian government to split the RET portion of the bill from the disputed Emissions Trading (ETS) bill. Previously they had both been one bill but as the fighting heated up over the ETS bill, it was clear that it was better to split the RET and the ETS into two separate bills and so that the RET portion of the bill could be passed.

The home solar discount of $7,000 is for grid connected homes and buildings only. The home can be a rental home, a principal place of residence, a vacation home or a commercial building. The rebate threshold in earlier bills of a household taxable income of $100,000 has been removed.

The home solar credits scheme is ingenious in that it assigns a value of 500% the market value of what are know as RECs or Renewable Energy Certificates.

RECs started in Australia in December 2001, and are designed to place a monetary value on the displacement of greenhouse gases. One REC is equivalent to approximately one mega Watt hour of electricity produced, or about one ton of abated greenhouse emissions. They provide financial incentive to place less reliance on the burning of fossil fuel.

Depending on your latitude and how many sunshine hours you receive, there are usually 31 RECs attached to a 1.5kW solar energy installation. The value of a REC is subject to market variation, and they are currently trading at approx $35. This equates to $1,085 value in RECs for a 1kW installation. Under Solar Credits, this figure is multiplied by five, to give a total discount of $5,425.

Home solar credits will apply to the first 1.5 kW of capacity installed. For systems above 1.5kW, customers will be eligible for the standard 1:1 rate of RECs. Home solar credits/RECs are issued by the Office of Renewable Energy Regulator (ORER) for the lifetime generation of the system, and customers can elect to either assign them to the installer to keep the upfront cost of the solar energy installation down, or hold on to them just as you would a share portfolio.

So there you have it. This is something that could be easily done in the United States but big oil and energy companies do not want you producing your own energy. They want to keep you as a paying customer and are willing to destroy the world in order to do that.

You Can Save Money And Energy With Solar Lights

By Peter Emerson

People's requests for solar lights are growing more and more, they are even becoming more popular amongst house holders than regular light bulbs. If you care about the safety and protection of the environment you live in, it's the right choice for you to get solar lights.

The reason why solar lights are so well known to be safe to the environment is because they don't need electricity to work, all they do is feed on the natural energy they get from sunlight and that's exactly how they glow in the dark.

This also means that they are budget friendly as well, since they use absolutely no electricity this means no electricity bill no matter how long your solar lights remain glowing.

Solar lights are meant to provide your garden with extra unique beauty at night. But they are not only used in gardens, solar lights are used in almost anywhere you want to decorate. They are good for decks, patios, backyards, sidewalks and even your front door.

The best part about solar lights is that they needn't any wires to connect to. This means less mess and complicated tangles, not to mention having the privilege to put your solar lights wherever you want in your outdoors without any problems.

Unfortunately, there are things you must be well aware of before choosing a spot for your solar lights outside which include making sure that enough sunlight reaches that place during the day.

Outdoor solar lights need approximately 7 hours of sunlight a day in order for them to work properly during the night, if not, you will begin noticing that your solar lights aren't glowing as much as they used to.

If you experience different changes in the way your solar lights work, like if a few of them stop working or they don't glow as bright. The biggest chance is that you need a new battery.

Not getting enough sunlight can easily make your battery life span drop low, and that's the problem most people face. However, if you follow step by step, using your instructions manual and getting at least I know a little bit about them.

Solar lights aren't exactly the kind of bulbs that require a lot of care, they need to be washed continuously because of being outside day and night, day after day can wear people out sometimes.

Fortunately, cleaning solar lights is very simple, all you need to do is slightly wet a small towel or piece of cloth until it's a little damp and then you can wipe your light bubs until they are crystal clean again.

Solar light bulbs are made of light emitting diode making them extra durable than any other phone or care you'll ever see.

If you are using solar lights for your outdoors there is less chance of a fire starting as solar lights are 100% safe to you and your environment.

A Simple Solar Panel Watt Calculation

By Tim McDonald

With green living becoming more and more important, many people are starting to install home solar power to supplement their power, and reduce their electric expenses.

But when you install solar power, how much do you actually have to generate to say cut your bills by 50%? And what kind of costs will you be looking at?

This is the process we followed, when calculating our home's solar power needs and the investment required.

1 - How Much Power Do You Use Per Day?:

Your first step is to work out the average daily kilowatt hours (kWh) used. This can be done by looking back at your last twelve months power bills, and see how much power used per month, and get the monthly average. This will give you a better estimate of your average power needs by eliminating the effect of the seasons. It is calculated by adding up all 12 bills and dividing the total power used by 12. If you do not have the the past year's bills, then look at your most recent one.

Now take your average kwH per month and divide that by 30 to get your average kWh per day.

- Let's use an example: If our monthly energy usage is 800kWh, then the average daily power used is: 800/30 = 26.7 kWh a day.

- So to reduce your electricity bill to half, 26.7/2 = 13.4 kWh of solar power per day is needed.

2 - Work Out Your Solar Panel Watt Requirements:

To do this, you first need to determine how many usable hours of sunlight your area receives per day. This is where a solar insolation map comes in handy - you can view one from our original article on our website.

Once you know your daily sunlight hours, go back to your daily kilowatt hours needed and divide it by the daily sunlight hours, then multiply it by a factor of 1.25 (takes into account energy losses from the solar panel watt wiring, battery , and inverter)

- From the previous example, if you live near California where the average daily usable hours of sunlight is 5.5 hrs, the solar wattage needed is:

13.4 kWh needed / 5.5hrs of sunlight x 1.25 = 3.045 kW or 3045 Watts a day.

This tells us that our solar panels must be capable of producing at least 3045 Watts of electricity.

3 - How Much Will This Power Cost You?:

Next you need to work out how much it will cost to buy solar panels that produce at least 3045 Watts. Currently the highest average cost for solar panels in North America is $4.85 a Watt.

- In our example: It will cost us at the most 3045 x 4.85 = $14,768 to install solar panels to halve our power bill. And that's before wiring, charge controllers, batteries, inverters, and electrician costs.

4 - Take Government Rebates and Credits Into Account:

Before thinking that your solar power investment is going to be $14,768 to only halve your power bill, you need to subtract any tax rebates and subsidies on offer.

With the new renewable energy tax credits going into effect from January 1, 2009, and state-side rebates from states such as New York, Connecticut, New Jersey or California, our solar installation costs will be much lower than expected.

- Let's use our example: If we were from California we would receive tax rebates of about 20% of the cost, and a federal tax credit of 40% on the remainder. So after rebates and credits, our solar panels would cost us:

$14,768 - $14,768 x (20%) - $14,768 x (1 - 20%) x 40% = $7,089.

Since there are many factors that go into calculating your solar panel watt costs, please only use our steps as a rough estimate. Some things were impossible for us to take into account, such as special offers by solar installation companies, where they offer you discounts on the full installation (including charge controller, inverter, battery, grid-tie electrician costs, etc).

However, from the example, you can see that for Californian to reduce their power bill by half, they would have to buy $14,768 worth of solar panels, costing them $7089 after rebates. A cheaper option would be to learn to source affordable and even free solar cells, and build your own solar panels. This can be done by following a relatively inexpensive step-by-step solar power manual, such as Earth4Energy.

LEED Green Associate - The Future Is Green

By Mathew Compton

Today we as human beings have managed to destroy a good part of our planed. We have outlived our stay under the earth's atmosphere and in many ways have made existence and evolution of the earth impossible. The way things are going are not the way they should because if they do we will find ourselves in trouble we won't be able to get ourselves out of. The LEED Green Associate is dedicated to teaching and helping people save our planet.

Building green is one of the most beneficial things we can do to protect our planet. Many people have often taken the cost of going green so negative that efforts were not made in the right way to make a shift towards green technology.

The good news is that cost resistance towards green technology is slowly loosing ground. People have begun to realize that the expense of the environment is nothing compared to the high energy costs. This positive shift is thus giving green technology a boost in the right direction.

The biggest boost by the government to green technologies was given when president Obama in early 2009 announced an increase in green technology investments. The package is designed and set forth with the potential of creating 3. 5 million jobs in the green sector over the next two years. However even though the public sector is gaining momentum the private sector is still not sure.

However the private sector's resistance towards the cost of green technologies is not totally unfounded. When green technology first began to take its first steps it was expensive. However the costs required a commitment to our future as well as to the green movement. Back then the return on investing on green technology was not a lot. However today technology has evolved and as the demand rises the costs have gradually declined to quite an extent.

The National Association of Realtors have reported that the cots related to sustainable and green construction technology has decreased to quite an extent. In the most recent estimates green construction will cost around 1-1. 5% higher than normal construction costs. However if you look at the energy savings it stands at around a 25% savings average.

The LEED Green Association is a place where people can come to learn about green technologies and their implementation. Since its now realistic to think that green technologies are the technology for the future its also now realistic to think about getting your self an education in green technology. What was not expensive is now well within the reach of many people and is fast becoming a fact of live for many others.

Today the American president has taken the first step towards green technology by investing in the green movement. The government has begun to show support for the potential and the future of sustainable energy. New for 2009: LEED Green Associate

By Vin DeAngelo

Conventional technology has managed to do more harm than good for our planet. In a way human beings have managed to out live their welcome on the planet by making many plants and animals extinct. This has made it difficult for people to live in harmony with Mother Nature. If things proceed the way they are then it's not going to be long before every one of us will find ourselves in trouble. This is why institutions such as the LEED Green Associate educate people about green technologies.

How to Ensure Efficiency of Fluorescent Lights

By Tom Sanderrs

Many people already know that fluorescent lighting is the best way to conserve energy. Going this route is also advantageous for people so that they can gain a better financial control of their electric bills. It's certainly become a trend wherein lots of people are contributing to the energy efficiency vogue. However, people are still asking questions on whether it's more efficient to leave fluorescent lights permanently on or not. Concerns also rise especially when it's about having many fluorescent lights in just one area. There are other issues and that's why this article will try to focus on these questions. Read on for a more comprehensive view on this matter.

Warming-up Time

A common question is about the energy fluorescent lights need when turned on. This is both a valid and inaccurate question, because people refer to the warm-up period. People want to know if this process requires a lot of energy each time and the only good answer is that it does a little bit. Studies prove that the process of starting-up a fluorescent light requires more energy after being switched on.

Leaving the Lights On

Energy is not expended in large quantities and that means that leaving lights on will not save you any money or energy. In fact, you will waste energy by leaving lights on for long periods of time. On top of that, you will also take away from the lifespan by leaving the fluorescent lights on.

Switching On and Off

Another concern that many users of fluorescent lights have is whether or not the lifespan is affected by frequently turning the light on and of. This is definitely a valid concern and it is also true for all types of lights, not just fluorescent ones. This has been proven by studies and so if you want your fluorescent lights to last longer, don't constantly turn them on and off.

Energy-Saving Bulbs

The following two types of lights are examples of newer, more efficient fluorescent light designs:

Compact Fluorescent Lamps: Compact fluorescent lamps replaced the older incandescent lights. However, the plugging ends are shaped similar to incandescent bulbs and they fit into any light fixture.

Electrodeless Lamps: Electrodeless lamps were basically designed to have a longer lifespan than most other fluorescent lights. True to its name, these lamps do not have electrodes in them. Fluorescent lights all basically burn out because of the electrodes; and removing these makes the lamps last longer.

Finally, some tips for your fluorescent lights. First make sure that you turn off the lights you don't intend on using and secondly, before deciding on which fluorescent lights to purchase always compare the choices based on watt output, quality and price. This way you will always have peak energy efficiency.

DIY Solar Power - Harness the Energy from the Sun to Generate Electricity

By Kelly Shine

Can you envision a better scenario than generating free electricity to power your home on demand while doing your part to protect the environment? Well that is exactly what is within your reach when you take advantage of DIY solar power. You can even generate enough electricity to sell back to the utility company for profit. Just think about that for a minute.

As all homeowners realize the cost to heat our homes and provide power for our TVs, computers, appliances, etc. is quite expensive and you can bet it's not going to get any cheaper. As a matter of fact, developing nations such as China and India will be consuming fossil fuels such as heating oil and natural gas at an ever increasing rate which will only make these finite resources all the more expensive.

By tapping into the energy of the sun however, you now have an infinite amount of energy that can be converted into electricity. The sun is the most powerful entity in our universe and each and every day it radiates its energy to our planet. We now have the technology to harness that energy and convert it into electricity so why in the world wouldn't we take advantage of that?

What makes this option even better for the average person, is that it is an easy to do and affordable endeavor. A DIY solar power system can take the energy of the sun and convert it into electricity easily and quickly without creating any pollution. Building your own solar panel will cost less than $200. If you have looked into buying a commercially manufactured system, you know they cost as much as $20,000. So a DIY system is an incredibly cheap way to go.

Building a DIY solar panel is a project that is fun for the whole family. Start by going on the internet and purchasing a set of plans. They don't usually cost more than $50 and often include a video step-by-step guide as well. You will find that building a panel with photovoltaic cells is a simple process.

Basically the way a solar power system for the home works is that the very first panel you install will save you a percentage of your electricity bill depending upon how many solar cells are in the panel and how much sun you receive. As you add more photovoltaic solar cells and panels to your system your energy savings will increase.

Some people have found the building of solar panels so easy and such an enjoyable project that they have made panels for their neighbors. They have learned to make panels in less than two hours and are able to sell them for $500. That's a $250 profit for two hours of work! As the demand for solar power rises, it is a small business venture that will only do better and better.

In addition to saving money on your utility bills, DIY solar panels have other advantages as well. The government is now allowing a tax deduction for any source of renewable energy used in your home. DIY solar panels are certainly eligible. They also will increase the value of your home. You can't lose investing in alternative energy sources and adding solar panels to your home is so easy to do!

Hiring A Skip

By Lily McKinnon Smith

Everyone is familiar with cupboards, attics and drawers being so full of junk that you cant fit anything in them any more and every now and then, every house needs a good clean-out of all the junk thats been accumulated over the years. Usually, the most cost effective way of doing that is to hire a rubbish skip, and throw it all out into one conveniently placed container rather than drive back and forth to the local tip.

Its increasingly common in the modern day industry that skip hire companies will sort your waste into recyclable and non-recyclable. The advantages of this are of course that rather than simply creating more rubbish to sit on a landfill site and further pollute the planet, you will be helping to create new resources for the future.

It can often be tricky trying to work out how big you will need your skip to be. It is always best to opt for one slightly larger than you anticipate rather than to fill one and not have the room for all of your waste.

Lockable skips are available from most companies and these are a great way of preventing people from fly tipping, i.e. filling your skip with their own junk. It is a problem as old as skips themselves but it can now be stopped by lockable skips.

If you intend to have the skip parked in the street you will need to obtain a street permit from the council. Your skip company should be able to do this for you without any additional charge or problems, they will also ensure that the skip is coned off and has suitable night lights. Complying with local health and safety is vital as you could find yourself liable if an accident were to occur.

The Benefits Of Using Water Softeners

By Tal Potishman

Using a water softener can change your life forever. Although it may appear like luxury spending at first, once you start to see it's life-changing benefits, you will find it hard to go back. It is simply one of the best investments you can make to ensure long-term money and energy savings.

What is the difference between 'hard' water and 'soft' water?

When reference is made to 'hard' water it means that it contains more minerals than ordinary water. The minerals that are particularly relevant here are calcium and magnesium. As the calcium and magnesium dissolves, the water becomes more hard. A significant amount of calcium and magnesium causes the water to become even harder. Water softening is the process of removing those ions that make the water hard. These ions are usually calcium and magnesium ions.

Green Benefits

Water softeners have a number of enhancing abilities. They are useful in helping to cut down on carbon emissions by removing the build up of scale that forms insides pipes and heating systems. The government carried out some tests that confirmed that the improvement rate was 5.6%.

Using water softeners in your home will mean that you will need to invest less in soaps and cleaning products. Your appliances around the house will run a lot smoother as water softeners help increase the life-span of the appliances. You will also save money on visits by service engineers to maintain and repair the appliances from the damages of limescale.

Some commentators have not been very impressed by water softeners, questioning their real benefits. They call them time-wasters because they use water to regenerate. However, many have argued that this is not the case today. The water softener regenerates the effectiveness of the resin used to soften the water by washing it with brine, usually once a day.

Since it came into place around a 100 years ago, the industry has worked on improving its ability to operate on less water usage. Most of the contemporary water softeners meet the Building Research Establishment's (BRE) Code for Sustainable Homes specification for acceptable performance, which is for regeneration to use no more than 4% of the total amount of softened water the softener produces.

Lifestyle improvement

Using water softeners will drastically improve your lifestyle at home. You will not have problems with your shower blocking any more, and your sinks will stay clean. The reduction of scale will keep your boiler running efficiently. Your hours spent in cleaning will be vastly reduced as your shower cubicle will stay clean for weeks and need limited polishing up.

Savings in the home

Installing a water softener has other benefits too. The amount of money you will save will be huge, as you will not have to spend money on various cleaning products, such as scale removers, shower cleaners, and floor cleaners etc. The most substantial, but perhaps less obvious savings you will make will be on your hot water heating system by removing its scale.

Finally, water softeners will not just benefit you economically and environmentally. Once you have enjoyed the luxury of washing and showering in scum free water, you will find it difficult re-adjusting back to hard water.

Go Green with Solar and Wind Energy

By Chris Ulrich

Depending upon where you live, solar energy and/or wind energy can be something that you can use to assist reduce your bills and enhance the environment.

Solar energy has been discussed for decades, and has gained strength in recent years. Newer solar energy systems are far more adept than their predecessors, and over the last five years the cost has come down greatly. More competent systems have been constructed, are becoming cheaper to manufacture and allow you to save more electric at a lower cost.

Wind is also picking up speed (pardon the pun) in the green energy market. Meanwhile countries in Europe have utilized wind energy for more than 100 years, practical use to produce electricity here in the states has actually gained tremendous attention over the last several years. The new devices designed specifically for home users that can harness the power of wind and produce electricity right into your house.

To take advantage of green energy, you do need to be a homeowner. If you are renting an apartment or renting a house, it would'nt make sense for you to put in a solar energy system. If you are even allowed to bring one in, you may not come close recovering costs connected with that system.

For homeowners, the results can be amazing. First, when you set-up green energy (whether wind or solar) it may raise the worth of your house greatly. In this rough real estate market, it can make the difference between selling your home and not selling your home. Because many homes are not yet equipped with green energy, those that are equipped are in high demand.

Solar power systems (also called solar energy systems) operate with solar panels to capture the beams of the sun. Technically, they rebound the beams of the sun, and in doing so release electrons. Those electrons are then obtained and used as electricity. More electrons to capture, the greater power you produce.

Most people will still be affiliated to the utility company for electricity. Solar energy does not work at night and wind energy does not generate when there is no wind. Therefore, you do maintain your account to the power grid for supplemental electricity. This definitely works to your advantage: utilities will definitely buy electricity back from you when you obtain more than you can use. For example, if you are out of your home for the day and shut off all of your electronics, lights and other equipment, your electricity demand in the house will be extremely low (you should of course leave your refrigerator connected). While you are out, you're solar and/or wind systems keep generating electricity. If you are not home to utilize it, it can be pumped back into the power grid and can be utilized by your neighbors!

When you do this, the utility company pays you for the electric that you send into the power grid-generally at the same price as they would charge you! It's a amazing phenomenon to watch when you step outside your house, look at your power meter, and see it turn backwards!

Getting started with solar and wind is an easy process. However, you do need to do your research and speak with an expert. Be sure you get all the facts before you start and, as with any other major spending, make sure you are working with someone reputable.

DIY Vertical Wind Turbine Made Easier Than Ever

By Teegan McElroy

If you are a person who is interested in alternative energy sources and are a do-it-yourselfer, a DIY vertical wind turbine may just be the perfect option for you and your family. People throughout the world are excited about the possibilities now available for creating energy from wind for their homes. Especially as they begin to realize how inexpensive and easy it is to do. A vertical wind turbine has some advantages over a conventional wind turbine and looks different. The blades on the vertical turbine are perpendicular to the ground.

They can actually look pretty funky and the great thing about them is that you can become very creative when constructing your own. This differs from a conventional wind power generator that basically looks like a windmill, which actually is exactly what it is. You can use the same plans as you would a traditional wind turbine while making the obvious modifications for a vertical turbine.

The fantastic thing about building your own wind power generator, whether it is a traditional wind turbine or a vertical turbine, is that it is a very inexpensive project. For less than $200 you can purchase everything you need from your local home improvement center or hardware store. Furthermore, you do not need any specialized tools and may have most of them already in your tool box.

Building a DIY vertical wind turbine is a terrific family project as well. Kids love to be involved in this hands on project and they can learn so much in the process. They will not only learn how wind can be turned into electricity, they can also learn about the importance of reducing their carbon footprint on our environment. Children who become involved in family projects and particularly in the building of a wind turbine take great pride in their accomplishment ownership of the results.

One of the advantages of a vertical wind turbine over the traditional wind turbine is that they are more efficient. Vertical blades take up less space and therefore there is room to add additional blades. More blades do not capture any more wind but they do allow the turbine to respond to less wind and therefore are able to produce energy with just the slightest breeze.

Wind may not always be available just when you want it to operate your turbine, but fortunately, the energy created by wind when it is available can be stored for future use. The turbine is designed to capture wind energy and store it in batteries for future use. So you have electricity available even when there is no wind and your turbine is not working.

Another advantage of the DIY vertical wind turbine is that it takes up less space than a traditional wind turbine. It is ideal for use in small spaces and perfect for the homeowner who has a limited area in which to place a traditional wind turbine. It is small enough to be used by people who own condominiums or live in apartments. They can be placed on a deck or patio and are less conspicuous to your neighbors. They are just as powerful in their ability to create electricity for your home.

Constructing your own wind power generator is not at all difficult. There are plans available on the Internet for less than $50 that will walk you through the entire process. As stated before there are no special parts or tools required and just about any able-bodied person that has the ability to follow directions can do it. It is much easier than many would imagine.

Yet another advantage of utilizing a diy vertical wind is the fact that the power can be stored in batteries and used just about anywhere you go including camping and for other outdoor activities. The IRS also allows for tax deductions for people that take advantage of alternative energy sources such as the sun and wind to create electricity for their homes.

Start Those Autumn Home Improvements Now

By Tom Millner

The long sunny days of summer are nothing but memories but that doesn't mean you have to stop upgrading your home. The warm weather between humid summers and frigid winters make interior and exterior home improvement plans easy to begin and even easier to finish. Fall is the perfect time of the year to begin on home improvement projects for a number of different reasons.

It's a good time to put in some new trees in your yard, freshen up your flower beds with some new bulbs or maybe even strengthen up any retaining walls or stone walkways you may have. You might want to think about getting your house ready for winter by checking to make sure your roof is in good condition and your windows are all properly sealed with weatherstripping. If you're a DIY kind of home-owner then you'll want to take advantage of the cooler weather to take care of exterior projects like sprucing up the landscaping, caulking around your windows or even painting your house.

If you're planning on having company visiting for the holiday season then you'll obviously also want to start sprucing up your home's interior with deals on paint. This is also a good time of the year to purchase home improvement supplies because many big home stores begin having their largest sales around this time. You may be able to pick up some good deals on left over summer furniture and even pool chemicals. Local landscaping centers will be trying to get rid of most of their plants in stock and will be preparing for the winter months.

Most contractors are especially interested in serving home owners because they know the colder months will be slow for them. The fall is also a great time to hire independent contractors to work your home because their busiest time of the year is just ending. You'll find lots of deals being offered by home improvement contractors around this time of year in an effort to close out as many jobs as possible before the quiet holiday season. Big home improvements can be expensive, so you may want to see if you're eligible for an FHA Title I home improvement loan of some sort.

You might want to take it easy in the fall, knowing that you'll be able to do lots of interior home improvement projects after the holidays. As a homeowner you'll have plenty to do when the leaves start falling - including raking leaves, cleaning out your gutters and decorating for Halloween and Christmas. You can inspect your heating system, increase the insulation in your home and even clean out your chimney if you have one. Even if you just want to just relax this fall, you might still want to get your house ready for winter.

Home improvement companies are hungry for work and some are even helping you pay for their jobs through them. Home supply stores have lots of sales available now as their season is winding down. This autumn is looking like a great time to start those home improvement projects from a financial perspective as well. Home equity loans are available at historically low interest rates and appear to be steady for now. All in all, it's a great time to start some of those fall home improvements!

Build a Home Made Solar Panel for Fun and Profit

By Teegan McElroy

The cost of electricity continues to rise in cost just like everything else these days. If you are like most of us, you are thinking of ways to cut your expenses. If you have ever thought about building your own home made solar panel, now is the time to do it. Not only will you be able to reduce your utility bill but you will be doing your part to protect our environment.

Building your own solar panel is really a very easy to do project. They are constructed of photovoltaic cells that are strung together to form a panel. The sun then heats the cells and energy is created. This energy is converted to electricity. The sun is an incredibly powerful and effective source of energy and readily available.

The sun produces an unlimited supply of free energy and adds no pollution to our planet, like fossil fuels. Harnessing solar energy is an excellent solution to both our limited supply of fossil fuels and the growing concern over the harmful effects of pollution.

Many homeowners may already have considered installing manufactured solar energy panels, only to discover the cost is prohibitive. Commercially purchased solar panels can cost as much as $20,000 to purchase and install. It would take some time to earn back the cost of this investment in lower energy bills.

Building your own home made solar panel on the other hand can be done for less than $200. Quite a difference in price isn't it? Once more, there are no special skills required and the parts and tools necessary to construct your very own photovoltaic solar panel can be purchased at your local hardware store or home improvement center.

People who have built homemade solar panels have seen a significant reduction in their utility bill right away. Depending on the side of your panels, how many you have, and how much sun they receive will determine how much electricity you can create. It is possible to create enough power to completely eliminate your power bill. Some people have even created a surplus of electricity and have sold it back to the utility company at a profit.

Constructing solar panels for your home have even more benefits. A tax deduction is available to any homeowner who uses alternative energy sources, like solar and wind power. The addition of solar panels to your home will also increase the resale value of your home.

Constructing a home made solar panel will most definitely lower your utility bill each month and save you a chunk of money each year. It is also 100% environmentally friendly and will help save the environment. Solar and wind energy do not add pollution to the environment the way fossil fuels do. You will be saving yourself money, but you will also be saving our planet. It's a win-win situation.

Solar Power Is Easier Than You Think

By Lance Jensen

If you do not have the money to professionally solar power your home, you need to learn a few things about solar panels.

The first thing you are probably wondering is if it is possible to buy just one solar panel to power your entire home. This is one of the most common questions asked by people looking into installing their own solar power system. You might even have a list of things in your home that you would like to put on this single solar panel such as an air conditioner, dishwasher, TV, and so on.

I'm sorry to tell you that the answer is no. It is impossible for a single solar panel to power an entire house. I've lived off the power grid for 15 years and solar panels have come a long way. Even with the latest technology and most expensive solar panels on the market, you would need about 15 solar panels and a dozen or so deep cycle batteries. If you live in the desert or any environment where you really need to run your air conditioning a lot, then you will need even more. Your air conditioner is the most power hungry "appliance" in your home.

What you need to learn is that nothing in your home can be run off of a solar panel. Things in your home are run off a battery bank. The solar panels job is only to keep your battery bank charged. You might think this is just clever semantics but it is not. Voltage spikes are very bad and can fry computer chips in all sorts of appliances. This is why power strips have voltage spike protection in them. If you plugged things in your home directly into a solar panel, every little cloud or bird that crosses between your solar panel and the sun would send a massive voltage spike to whatever you are running off it causing it to fry. You must have a steady flow of electrons coming into your home to power things. This is precisely what a battery bank does for you.

You may want to use solar panels to power your whole house excluding the air conditioner. For your air conditioner, switch it over to gas.

If you are not home during the day, turn off your air conditioner. Let your solar panels and battery bank generate electricity and sell back to the power company during the day. Then, at night, when you get home, turn on your AC.

You should be able to cut your bill by 75% or more doing this as long as you don't live in too hot a climate and thus don't have to run your AC that much at night.

DIY Wind Energy - A Simple But Powerful Way to Save Money

By Tristan West

There is an awful lot of talk about going green these days, especially with the election of President Obama and the seemingly eco-friendly Democrats dominating Congress. As individuals we can do our part by tapping into diy wind energy to create electricity to power our homes. It is surprisingly easy to do and very cost effective.

On a national or statewide level when we think of wind power we think of huge wind turbines, usually a whole farm of them spinning in the wind generating vast amounts of electricity. It can be intimidating in a way just by the sheer vastness of them. But that is not at all the case when discussing a residential wind turbine.

In addition, building a DIY wind energy turbine does not cost a fortune. In fact it is incredibly affordable. For less than $200 you can buy everything you need at your local home improvement center or hardware store. The materials and tools you need are not anything out of the ordinary.

And it is rather amazing to think about the cost of building your own DIY wind energy turbine. Believe or not, you can construct your own wind power generator to create electricity to power your home for less than $200. And it does not require any special tools or parts. In fact, all the parts that you will need can be purchased at your local hardware store or home improvement center.

Everyone has at least seen a picture of an old fashion windmill. While the newer wind turbine does not look like this type of windmill, the principle is the same. Used for generations as a source of power in the Netherlands, the interesting windmills we see in photographs and paintings have served a very important purpose.

In the past, windmills were used to harness power to crush grain into flour. Our purposes are different and our windmills are more advanced, but the method is the same. Now, wind turbines are used to create the power we need to run our appliances and heat and cool our homes.

There is no question that if you live in a windy location, you will be able to generate plenty of electricity using a conventional wind turbine. But even if you live where there is a limited amount of wind, you can produce wind energy effectively using another type of wind turbine. A vertical wind turbine is a different type of wind turbine design that has several advantages.

Of course, the windier the climate that you live in, the more electricity you should be able to generate. But if you do not live in an especially windy geographic location you can still take advantage of DIY wind energy. There are basically two different types of wind turbines. There is the conventional, which is the one that we are used to seeing, and then there is a vertical wind turbine.

Creating electricity with DIY wind energy is easier than ever to do. No matter whether you choose to construct a traditional wind turbine or a vertical wind turbine, you will do your part to eliminate our reliance on fossil fuels and their impact on our environment. An added bonus is the money you will save on your utility bills each month. Depending on where you live and the type and size of wind turbine you use, it is possible to eliminate up to 80% of your power usage from your local power company. Some people even generate all of their power.

In addition to tapping into alternative forms of energy such as diy wind energy to create electricity for our homes we will also be doing our part in weaning ourselves off of polluting fossil fuels. There is a great deal of satisfaction to be had from knowing that we are taking advantage of renewable resources to meet our energy needs.

Using Water Softeners In Your Home

Water softeners are not only great for the home, but they are also environmentally friendly, helping to reduce carbon emissions by removing the build up of scale that forms insides pipes and heating systems. The improvement rate was 5.6% according to some tests carried out by the government.

Using water softeners in your home will mean that you will need to invest less in soaps and cleaning products. Your appliances around the house will run a lot smoother as water softeners help increase the life-span of the appliances. You will also save money on visits by service engineers to maintain and repair the appliances from the damages of limescale.

Some commentators have questioned the validity of the supposed benefits of using water softeners. They claim that they are time-wasters because they use water to regenerate. However many have claimed that this is simply not true.

Enhanced lifestyle

As mentioned earlier, using water softeners will drastically improve your lifestyle at home. Little problems you used to have before like your shower or sink blocking, you will not have to deal with any more. You will notice a reduction in scale which will keep your boiler running efficiently. Furthermore, your time spent in cleaning will be greatly reduced as your shower cubicle will stay clean for weeks and need limited polishing up.

Immense savings

Spending large amount of money on cleaning products such as such as scale removers, shower cleaners, and floor cleaners will be a thing of the past once you have a water softener installed.

Fluorescent Lighting and the Advantages

By Tom Sanderrs

One option for electric lighting is fluorescent light. This technology is based upon the chemical reactions of neon gas and mercury which cause phosphor to glow and emit visible light. The degree of illumination is dependent upon the amount of energy supplied, but the light is substantial enough that it makes a great light for any home. This article will provide you with more information on fluorescent lights.

An Alternative to Incandescent Bulbs

As an alternative to incandescent bulbs, fluorescent lights make a good choice for several reasons. The main advantage is that fluorescent technology is different in that it uses gas discharge and electricity to create light while incandescent bulbs rely on heat reaction. Fluorescent lights are more energy efficient and convert more of the power supplied into visible light. The luminous efficacy factor of fluorescent lights is approximately 22% and for incandescent bulbs only 10%. That is a main reason for the popularity of fluorescent lighting.

Financial Benefits

Fluorescent light bulbs are more expensive to purchase, but nonetheless in the long run will save you money. Many make the mistake of thinking that since incandescent bulbs are cheaper that they will save money. This is wrong, since regular bulbs require a lot of energy and the more energy efficient fluorescent lights will help lower your electric bill.

Longer Lasting

Fluorescent lighting definitely lasts longer than the average incandescent bulb. It's estimated that fluorescents have a lifespan that's six times longer than incandescent lights. What's more, they can be turned off and on multiple times without you worrying if they'll quickly burn off or not.

Less Heat

Fluorescent lights do not give off any noticeably substantial heat. This makes it perfect for rooms where too much heat is just too much. Some rooms require a certain room temperature so that equipments can properly function. In other areas like crowded spaces, fluorescents are advantageous for people who want to focus on their work without being bothered by the heat. However, these features of fluorescent lights make it improper to place in rooms for mood lighting and decor ambience. On the other hand, some newer designs of fluorescents are able to produce substantial light moods but these tend to be more expensive.

Fluorescent lighting definitely has a lot of advantages. But before you go, here's a few advice on fluorescent lights: If you don't have basic knowledge of electrical installation or electronics, then don't try to install fluorescents yourself. A lot of fluorescent lights are best left to the professionals. You'd do well to heed this advice. Always use your common sense whenever you're installing or repairing the lighting in your house, whether it's an incandescent or a fluorescent light.

How to Build Your Own DIY Solar Cell Made Easier Than You Ever Thought

By Kerry Watts

With the finite amount of fossil fuels available to us being used up at a record pace the ability to construct a diy solar cell will become a skill that a great many people will want to possess. Solar cells absorb the energy from the sun which offers us an infinite amount of energy each and every day that we can convert into electricity to power our homes and offices.

Whereas commercially manufactured solar panels are incredibly expensive, a DIY solar cell is surprisingly affordable. For as little as $200 you can construct a photovoltaic solar panel for your home. In addition, everything you need is available at your local hardware store or home improvement center. Better yet, you don't need any special skills or tools.

Residential solar panels are made of many single cells hooked together. These cells are most often made of a material called polysilicon in residential solar cells. It is the cell itself that generates the energy needed to create electricity and the more cells you have the more power you can generate.

The solar cells used in a DIY solar cell is manufactured using silicon oxide. This is the same substance used in the commercially manufactured solar panels as well. The silicon oxide is heated in an extremely hot furnace and refined to 99% purity. A further refining process brings it up to 99.5% and then it is ready to be used in solar cells.

After the silicon oxide has been refined and still in the melted state, boron is added it to it. Boron helps convert the energy of the sun into electricity. The purified silicon is then crystallized. They are now referred to as p-type solar cells and are positively charged.

The cells are then immersed in a bath of negatively charged chemically treated water. An anti-reflective layer is then applied so that the sun's rays are absorbed and not reflected. It is the anti-reflective layer that gives the solar cells the dark look that we have grown accustomed to seeing. Conductors made of aluminum and silver are then added to conduct the newly created electricity.

The final step calls for the cells to be set on a panel. They are actually very fragile so they must be protected from potentially damaging objects such as hail and anything else that may damage them. The protection must also be transparent to allow the sun's rays to penetrate into the solar cells so thick glass or plastic that is transparent is usually used. Frame it up on the sides so it is a solid panel and it is ready to be installed.

Solar cells are very efficient in their ability to convert the sun's energy to power. One DIY solar cell may not produce enough energy to power your home, but several strung together in a solar panel can. Solar panels are a power generating option that has the ability to make a huge impact on your energy consumption from other sources and will, without a doubt, reduce your utility bill each month.

Flush Mount Ceiling Fans - A Great Option For Low Ceilings

By Erika Sundelin

A ceiling fan is a great option to keep the air circulating in a room. Perhaps you have seen ceiling fans in your friend's homes with their vaulted ceilings and wondered, if you could add a fan to your home with flat eight-foot ceilings. The answer is yes, if you use flush mount ceiling fans.

Traditionally, a ceiling fan was supported by a down rod. The rod was a piece of conduit that allowed the fan to be mounted several inches below the ceiling. It attached the motor to the ceiling and served as an electrical conduit for the wires that supplied the fan with power.

Older readers may remember older department stores with a balcony having ceiling fans in the front part of the store that had down rods that lowered the fan ten to twelve feet from the actual ceiling Flush mount ceiling fans, do not have the down rod, but have the motor in a housing that is mounted flush with the ceiling.

Ceiling fans can help you to use less power year round.

During the summer, the fans should push the air down. The resulting breeze helps people to feel cooler and to set their thermostats higher, thus saving power.

In the winter, reverse the fan and leave it on low. The heat that collects near the ceiling is pushed toward the floor for even heating of the entire room.

During the fall or spring, you may be able to turn off all other heating or cooling, open the windows and enjoy the breeze of the fan.

With very low ceilings, a light kit may not be an option. If you have the room, light kits can easily be added to the fan. Kits are available in many styles and can be found to match both your new fan and room decor.

When installing a ceiling fan be sure to change the electrical box to one rated for ceiling fans. Plastic electrical light boxes are not designed to stand up to the weight or vibration of a fan. Using these boxes could allow your fan to fall, damaging the fan and possibly causing injury to your or your family.

To correct a vibrating fan, see your owner's manual. There you will find instructions about balancing the blades.

Choose a flush mount ceiling fan for comfort and energy efficiency.

The Benefits Of A DIY Hydrogen Generator

By Alexis Jameson

You've probably heard about how many good things can come out of running your car from hydrogen, but the possibility might have seemed out of reach. Yet once you get started with a DIY hydrogen generator, you'll find it doesn't have to be. You might be doubtful that the process will really work, but will only need to try it for your proof.

Once you make the decision to try this, you will need to make investments, if not in terms of money, in terms of the time it will take to be sure you're doing everything right. The first thing you need to do well is getting the fuel. Your car will be powered off a type of gas called Brown gas, also commonly referred to as HHO.

Many people are doubtful that you really can get something like gas out of such an ordinary substance, but you'll be able to do it with ease. This is a very flammable substance that must actually be separated from the water. This sounds like a big deal, but all you'll need to do in order to get it done is go buy a hydrogen kit.

This kit will save you a lot of trouble once you really start working. Otherwise, you might have to start things from scratch, but this provides a lot of what you need ahead of time. You might also worry that you don't have the right car for adapting to these new needs, but this shouldn't be a concern either. Almost any car can be easily modified.

You shouldn't listen to the people who tell you all your efforts aren't really worth it. The main thing you're going to get once you go through this is a lot of money in your pocket that would normally have been lost at the gas station. On top of that, you know you're doing something good for the planet at a time when it really needs it.

Gas costs quite a lot and having to pay for much less of it is the main reason people turn to this option. You often don't realize how much you were throwing away until you don't have to any more. When as much as $900 a year stays in your pocket because of the change you made, you'll definitely notice that.

Environmentalists also push this option because it puts a lot less in the way of bad fumes into the air. Making your car a hydrogen powered one can quickly become just one part of living a green lifestyle. The cash you'll be able to spend on other things will make you feel good enough, but this positive feeling just adds to the benefits.

Understanding The Role of the Throat Chakra

By Estee Taschereau

In the energy body there are seven primary chakras, or energy centers. These centers can be viewed in a similar way like our organs, playing important roles in our lives. In this article we will talk about the function of the throat chakra.

This word, chakra, comes from an ancient language known as Sanskrit. It means wheel, which is the perception seen when viewing these energy centers clairvoyantly. Each of the seven primary chakras serves us in a certain aspect of our life. The throat chakra is our communication chakra.

When we speak of communication our first thought is of an exchange of words between two people. Communications are not restricted to words alone. We have sign language, using symbols and gestures to make a point.

We also communicate through our eyes, our smile, and the way we move our body. Our tone changes, the volume of our voice influences the message given, as does the emphasis on certain words.

Our communication is far more than just the words we utter, though our primary focus is on the vocal aspect. In the energy body and the throat, or communication chakra, the chakra itself is more of a passageway to relay the collective message from our knowledge, perception, heart, and emotions.

There is another aspect of the throat chakra that is called the inner voice. This ability connects us body, mind and spirit. Our inner voice is the conduit to connect to our own emotions, feelings, perceptions, knowledge and our higher spiritual powers.

Another part of the throat chakra is telepathy. While this name is often recognized many of us believe we have little or no experience with this ability. Telepathy does not use the physical means of communication, so there is no evidence of how much we really use this style of communication.

As you can see, there is really no mystery to the throat chakra. Our energy body serves us in the physical, helping us to experience and express ourselves. Understanding more about chakras and our energy bodies can give you greater understanding of yourself. Awareness brings us closer to ourselves, giving us more power in healing ourselves.

How to Take Advantage of Windmill Generator Plans

By Sandy Hill

Building your own wind turbine to create your own alternative energy source is a very viable option these days. If you are a do-it-yourselfer you are probably ready to jump on the band wagon and get started. The first step to take is to track down a set of windmill generator plans that will provide you with all the direction you need to take you through this project. It is very expensive to buy a readymade windmill, but fortunately, a DIY wind turbine is very easy and inexpensive to construct.

You may already know that a manufactured residential windmill would cost in the neighborhood of $25,000 to purchase. Windmill generator plans will cost you only around $50. And to make it even more doable, the parts for the windmill can be purchased at your local hardware store or home improvement center for less than $200.

You probably have all the tools you need already in your tool box. But if you don't, they are nothing out of the ordinary and again, are available in your local stores. Building a DIY windmill is a very satisfying project and worth undertaking.

Building your own wind turbine is such an affordable project that you will most likely recover the cost of materials and plans within several months of the time your wind generator goes online. A tax deduction is also available for source of alternative energy added to your home.

How much electricity your windmill will generate is pretty much predicated upon how large it is and how much wind it will get where it is constructed. We have all seen those giant wind turbines on the windfarms. They produce electricity that is measured in megawatts. In other words, enough to power up an entire neighborhood.

A home doesn't use very much power relative to a city or town. Under average conditions, a residential wind power generator can supply a significant amount of a home power needs even as you stay connected to your power company's power source.

There is no doubt, however, that the amount of power generated by a residential wind turbine will be significant enough to save you a substantial amount of money each year. Using windmill generator plans you will be able to build a residential wind power generator that create electricity that is then stored in a battery to be used whenever you need it.

There is one decided downside to wind energy that is rather obvious but I will state it anyway, when the wind does not blow and the blades do not turn, no power is generated. It is much the same thing with a solar panel. When the sun does not shine it cannot produce electricity because there is no energy being absorbed from the sun.

If you are ready to undertake this money saving project, a set of windmill generator plans will get started on your way. Before long you will be noticing the impact on your utility bill. While one wind turbine may not eliminate your bill entirely, two just might!

How to Grow 2-Inches Taller in 2-Minutes

By C. Ludlow

I'm really not exaggerating. You can appear 2-inches taller in just 2-minutes.

It's simple to grow taller. First, however, let me show something to you. Go stand in front of a mirror. If you look at yourself from the side you'll notice that if you're like most American's, your head is jutting forward. This is from excessive time sitting with poor posture.

Modern have dictates that you will spend most of you time sitting. Unlike our ancestors who spent most of their time doing physical labor, we spend most of our time on our rears. In our cars. At the office. All day long we're sitting.

What this does is it causes muscle imbalances to occur. When you sit for most of the day the muscles on the front of your body become tight. Just think about this for a second. Imagine you could look down at yourself right now as you read this. Youre probably in sort of a half-fetal position.

Now, back to your mirror exercise. When you look in the mirror sideways you probably noticed that your torso curves forward slightly, as do your shoulders.

All of this sitting and hunching forward essentially makes you shrink. I was speaking with a client some time ago and he told me that when he went in for his physical his doctor told him that he was an inch shorter. The reason why is because his posture fell apart over the years. If you look at his head, it rests not over his spine but in front of his torso over air. Not good.

To grow taller in two minutes all you have to do is think S.B.D.

SBD or shoulders, back and down is little mental affirmation that you can say to yourself that will revitalize your body and mind. It will give you energy and height - of all things. What you should do when you say it is push your shoulders back and down into your back pockets. This will make you appear and actually become taller.

This is not about making you just appear taller. When you repeat the mantra, "shoulders, back and down" you will be more confident, energized and in all actuality, if you measure yourself before and after - you will be taller! That's all that there is to it! Congratulations!

Windmill Generator Plans - A Simple Solution to Soaring Energy Costs

By Teegan McElroy

If you are interested in alternative energy sources of energy such as wind power to create electricity for your home then it is strongly suggested that you get a hold of some quality windmill generator plans and take the job on yourself. The reason being that it is actually relatively simple to build your own windmill while buying one from a commercial manufacturer on the other hand can be extremely expensive.

If you were to attempt to purchase a residential windmill you would find out that they cost up to $25,000. A set of windmill generator plans will only cost approximately $50 and all the parts you need are available at your local home improvement center or hardware store for under $200. You will be able to save a substantial amount of money by building your own windmill.

A DIY windmill does not take any special skills to construct either. Nor does it require any special tools. It can actually be a rather enjoyable project that will in the end give you a great deal of satisfaction when completed.

It could take you decades to recoup the cost of a commercial windmill, while the cost of a DIY windmill will be recouped within a few months of installing it. There is also a tax deduction allowed by the IRS for utilizing alternative energy sources

Any residential windmill can only generate as much power as the wind available in the particular location. The more wind, the more energy can be produced form the wind. In addition, the bigger the windmill, the more energy it produces. The windfarms with their extra large wind turbines can easily produce enough electricity for a neighborhood.

For home use, you don't need nearly that much power. Generally, a residential wind power generator will provide the homeowner with a significant percentage of their home use needs. Normally, they will need to supplement it at times.

What it will absolutely do is save you a substantial amount of money on your utility bill each and every month. Windmill generator plans will allow you to construct a residential wind power generator that will not only create electricity for your home but will also let you to store it in batteries where the energy source can be tapped when the wind is not blowing.

The wind does not always blow and the sun does not always shine. This is the one drawback to this type of energy source. But the ability to store energy during the time that the wind is blowing and the sun is shining makes these alternative energy sources a viable option.

Don't delay. If you are seriously interested in saving money by generating your own power, you will want to purchase windmill generator plans and get started creating your own electricity. It won't be long until you notice your utility bill begin to shrink. And if you're really ambitious, you could add a second windmill and generate all the power you need!

DIY Wind Turbine - Learn How to Harness the Wind

By Tristan West

The first thing you need to do is purchase a set of plans. Plans for DIY wind turbines and solar panels are readily available on the internet. Some plans include a video that will show you step by step how to build the alternative energy project of your choice. These plans are usually less than $50.

Manufactured wind turbines can be purchased, but they are extremely costly. For those who are absolutely convinced they cannot build their own turbine or who dont mind spending thousands of dollars to buy a readymade turbine can do so. But chances are, if youre reading this article, you think a DIY windmill project is within your capabilities and might even be a very satisfying undertaking.

Did you know that you can save thousands of dollars a year on your electricity bill by using alternative energy sources like the wind and sun? You will absolutely receive savings from the IRS in the form of tax breaks for using wind and or solar power. In addition to that you will also increase the resale value of your home.

People throughout the world are turning to renewable energy options. Home owners in civilized countries everywhere are building DIY wind turbines and solar panels and reaping the benefits in lower energy costs. They are saving money and happily doing their part to reduce their carbon footprint on our planet. This trend promises to continue into the future with more and more people creating their own energy.

You may be wondering how much energy you can produce with a DIY wind turbine. This will depend on several things. First, the amount of wind in the area in which you live will play a big part in how much energy you can generate. The more wind the more power. Secondly, the size the wind turbine itself will determine the amount of energy that can be captured for future use. An average sized DIY wind turbine can produce enough energy to power an average home with just a few hours of moderate wind.

Homeowners who build and use a DIY wind turbine can expect to save 80% on their power bill. If the conditions are right you can eliminate your power bill entirely. Better still, it is possible to generate more than enough electricity to meet your needs. This excess energy can then be sold back to the power company and generate income for you. Not only will you save money with a DIY wind turbine and DIY solar panels, but you will know you are doing the right thing for the environment.

Save Money With A DIY Hydrogen Generator

By Alexis Jameson

The high cost of fuel is a concern to everyone today. In addition the pollution caused by our gasoline vehicles should also concern each of us. What if you could take the same vehicle you have today and double the gas mileage for that same car? Well, for less money than it takes to fuel the average SUV, you can build your own DIY hydrogen generator.

Just as the more expensive hybrid technology stores the excess energy available when a vehicle is coasting to a stop, the hydrogen generator also stores that excess energy. Most of today hybrid vehicles use batteries to store the excess energy that is just wasted by conventional automobiles. The hydrogen generator stores the excess energy by converting water into hydrogen and hydrogen oxide.

Hydrogen and hydrogen and hydrogen are both very reactive gasses. They would prefer to burn and be transformed back into water. Therefore, when these gases are mixed with gasoline, they increase the power rating of the fuel. They give your car more power and noxious emissions. As a matter of fact, the only emissions from burning hydrogen or hydrogen oxide is water. Since there is no carbon in these two fuels, there is no carbon monoxide produced by them. Since your vehicle cannot be powered on these two fuels alone, but must still rely on gasoline, there will be some carbon monoxide produced, but less than if the car was running on gasoline alone.

DIY hydrogen generator plans and kits abound on the internet. The first patent for a hydrogen generator was applied for in 1916. The needed parts are available in local hardware stores and are very simple. In fact, the wide mouth mason jar and plastic mayonnaise lid may be in your kitchen right now. In addition you will need assorted nuts and bolts and vacuum tubing. If you have to buy everything, you will spend about 65 dollars. You may be able to save that amount in two to three fill ups at the gas station.

Why should you build a DIY hydrogen generator? First you will save money. As the price of gasoline continues to rise, imagine getting two times the fuel economy out of your same vehicle. That inefficient SUB could boost its fuel economy to 20 or 30 miles per gallon. If you already are driving a fuel efficient vehicle, imagine 30 to 60 Miles per gallon. If fuel reached back to four dollars per gallon, the savings will be even more significant.

In addition a DIY hydrogen generator is good for our environment. Your vehicle will suddenly become more efficient in burning the gasoline it uses with fewer emissions. Think of the clean air we could leave for our grandchildren with this technology.

Thirdly, engines equipped with a DIY hydrogen generator last longer than those that do not have the generator.

Using Saving Light Bulbs Save Dollars The Greatest Alternative Is Saving Light Bulbs 10 Good Reasons To Use Efficient Light Bulbs

By Justin Luyt

Lights in an average home consume around 20% of the total electricity. It is the reason anything that might reduce the consumption of energy will greatly lower the energy bill, while at the same time reducing pollution. Luckily, saving power through seeking alternatives can be a wise decision by making use of energy efficient light bulbs.

Regular incandescent types of light bulbs produce light through heating a minute filament inside a bulb. The heat production does account for about 90% of the energy that is consumed. The energy efficient light bulbs are largely fluorescent and much more efficient since they hardly require heat to produce light.

Most have queried the amount of energy they are able to save. The average they can is about 66%. However, this is not the only way to save on money through their usage. The bulbs last longer than the regular incandescent energy bulbs. They might cost more, but their purchase will guarantee a good save.

The energy light bulbs last around 10 times more than the incandescent bulbs. As much as the florescent energy bulbs cost much more, their lifespan with the combination of the energy saving will provide you with substantial savings. The conservative estimates are that, you can save around $4 for every light bulb you install in your home. If you can replace 25 bulbs, you save about $100 annually.

If every household in the United States took advantage of the energy saving light bulbs, there would be a significant effect. There would be more purchasing power as well as pollution cut down, which the electricity generating plants cause.

Fossil fuels burning for electricity production have always created greenhouse emissions. Due to electricity consumption, an average home produces lots of gasses more than your standard car. These emissions are vastly cut down if you install the energy saving light bulbs. You will be doing your pockets a favor as you conserve the surroundings if you use them today.

As compared to incandescent light bulbs, the compact fluorescent saving energy bulb could save about 36 dollars on every bulb. After about 500 hours of using, their high cost is matched. Regular light bulbs have a lifespan of 500 to about 2,000 hours. However, the energy saving power bulbs have 8,000 hours as the guaranteed lighting period.

There are minute traces of mercury within the compact florescent light bulbs. A home user has no problem with this. The only problem will be an improper disposal. The compact florescent should be disposed in a way they can easily be recycled, and properly.

Apart from the mercury issue, the fluorescents are very beneficial to the vast environment. In fact, if every home replaced the incandescent bulb with a florescent energy saving light bulb, it will be like removing a million vehicles from the highway.

History of Fluorescent Lighting

By Tom Sanderrs

Fluorescent lighting has been around for more than 150 years. The research and development of the technology is due to the hard work of many brilliant inventors and scientists. If you'd like to know more about the history of fluorescent lights, then read onward.

Starting in the 19th Century

The earliest fluorescent lights were first invented in 1856 by Heinrich Geissler. He had found that gas-filled tubes were able to produce some luminance when they're stimulated by electricity. It's amusing to know that he had not intended to discover this. Nevertheless, his inventions became an important part to the future development of fluorescent technology. As the end of the 19th century drew close, many scientists experimented with Geissler's findings and adapted them to their own work. One of these was the late great Thomas Edison and he expanded upon Geissler's work (and other scientists) and created the first long-lasting light bulb that we know today.

Early 20th Century

The first successful fluorescent lighting happened in 1901. Peter Cooper Hewitt invented a bulb filled with mercury in a sealed tube. The tube's ends were fed with electricity which in turn excited the low pressure mercury, making it produce some UV light. This did not really become a true hit due to the fact that it gave off odd light. It was only in 1926, when Edmund Germer improved upon the technology, making the fluorescent light more stable and tweaking it to produce a more pleasant color, that the fluorescent light bulb finally became an instant commercial success.

Middle of the 20th Century

As World War II was approaching, General Electric, or GE, purchased the patent for fluorescent light from Germer. This was the beginning of worldwide promotions for this new type of light bulb and it was even showcased at the World's Fair in New York during the year 1939. Only during the war did energy efficiency become a priority and as a result incandescent lighting was being replaced with fluorescent lighting which was more energy efficient. The use of this bulb in businesses caused the demand for fluorescent bulbs to increase dramatically.

Last-quarter 20th Century

After the war and up to the 1960s the fluorescent light bulb was often used by businesses and even many organizations. Although a great alternative to incandescent bulbs, fluorescent lighting wasn't compatible with residential light fixtures because the bulbs did not fit. GE changed that during the 1970s when the company developed the Compact Fluorescent Lamp, or CFL.

Near Future

Starting in the mid 1990s, the Green Movement has been increasingly popular and has made fluorescent lighting a major option for people who want energy efficient products in order to reduce negative impact on the environment. More recently, US President Barack Obama has been pushing for the Green Economy proposal which strives for more energy efficiency and therefore will make fluorescent technology even more important.

Fight Global Warming Use Renewable Energy

By Jozel Max

The erratic changes in weather are without a doubt caused by the pollution stemming from the current excessive use of fossil fuels is creating a hostile living environment around the world. The storms and intense weather conditions are creating storms that are seldom survived by the human race. The entire population needs to join forces and use renewable energy sources before the world becomes obsolete.

Electricity is one of the privileges that have become a necessity to those that have it. The most common type of renewable energy sources used to create electricity is the sun. This is referred to as solar energy. The second most popular method of generating electricity is by using a windmill; these are expensive and require a lot of land. Then water can be used in the form of a water wheel, but water is becoming more and more in demand. A winning type of energy making equipment does not require any source to function but itself.

While a person lives in a climate that has fall and winter as a cold season, there is the problem of heating the residence or business venue. Heat can be made by a number of fossil fuels which create air pollution, causing dangerous greenhouse gases that make deadly acid rain. Solar energy can be used as a method of heat, even in the winter the sun is burning hot.

Another important renewable energy is the use of biodiesel products. This fuel is a diesel fuel that can power any diesel using engine. There are a number of uses that can do nothing but help the air pollution problem. Diesel engines have supplied the transportation industry with legitimate ways of fueling the economy for years, and now the introduction of biodiesel products need transitioned into the only fuel method.

Gas motors can be converted into using electric power or an ethanol type of fuel that is made from corn. Ethanol has been outvoted because of the corn used for production. Corn is in high demand because some cultures use corn as a huge part of their diet. Now there are vehicles that operate on water. Water is also diminishing.

Anytime a person thinks about getting the waste taken out of the home by a garbage company, only put into the dump what can destroy itself by being broken down naturally. Landfills and dumps are polluting the underground water sheds as well as the air that is needed to survive as a human race.

Another big cause of the existing global warming is the laziness of some people. American hard work with the hands of our forefathers created this wonderful country, and hard work will save this country and possibly the world. Take the video games and the television from the kids and show them how to do things outside. Good old American blue collar labor will assist with eliminating the privileges that are not helping anyone.

The saga will continue until the world's population as a whole decides to work together instead of fighting about whom should have the most money. Since most renewable energy sources are fairly inexpensive money is not the problem, it is mere corporate politics.

What Are The Main Causes of Land Pollution?

By Elizabeth Hammes

Are you looking for some inside information on pollution? Here's an up-to-date report from pollution experts who should know.

Some contaminants will degrade overtime, but many will remain in the soil and may pose a risk to human health. Click the link to the left on Contaminated Land Strategy for further information. Pollution to rivers, groundwater, canals and ponds can occur by the leaching of contaminants out of the soil into water courses through the natural drainage of the soil. This in turn can effect aquatic plant and animal life and contaminate human drinking water.

Metals such as cadmium and lead can have adverse effects on human and animal health if they are allowed to accumulate in the food chain. The occurrence of high concentrations of heavy metals in agricultural top soils is generally very localized. Contamination may be due to high levels of heavy metals, organic substances and other potentially harmful compounds. Levels of these contaminants may, in certain circumstances, be harmful to people or the environment. Sulphur dioxide also results from various metallurgical and chemical processes.

The best time to learn about pollution is before you're in the thick of things. Wise readers will keep reading to earn some valuable pollution experience while it's still free.

The state governments are equally culpable in that they fail to strengthen the environmental laws or even enforce those that exist, whilst the rights of communities are tossed aside. It explains the major statutory duties on farmers and land managers in relation to environmental protection, and provides best practice advice on preventing pollution and protecting natural resources, whilst allowing economic farming ventures to continue. The eight sections cover issues such as the use of fertilisers and pesticides, buildings, storage facilities and handling areas, waste management and water use. Norwegians were therefore able to lead the world in environmental responsibility and to avoid boom/bust impact on their seacoast cities. Most important, Norway has been stashing the oil profits in a public, socially responsible "Pension Fund" that will support the Norwegians' famously high living standard for many generations to come.

Land pollution is a global problem and affected the lives of millions of people and caused several deaths and health problems. Land pollution contains noticeable trash and waste along with the soil itself being polluted. Ways to help companies reduce industrial land pollution include supporting those organizations that are actively seeking to reduce waste and voting for laws that restrict or heavily punish companies that are not in compliance with environmental regulations.

The amount of contaminated and polluted land has been steadily decreasing as many high value sites have been cleaned up as part of re-development projects. Pollution from existing industrial sites is strictly controlled. The statement of contamination status of the site and its suitability or unsuitability for any use is available. The implications of the LBWF Contaminated Land Strategy are explained in detail in the attached documents. This strategy has been developed to be consistent with national and local LBWF objectives and policy documents.

Now might be a good time to write down the main points covered above. The act of putting it down on paper will help you remember what's important about pollution.

The Risks Of Carbon Monoxide

By Tal Potishman

Carbon monoxide is a force to be reckoned with. Once inhaled, its affects can be so devastating that it can even cause death within minutes. Carbon monoxide poisoning can come from a number of different sources, whether these be at home or at work. A lethal gas; it is odourless, invisible and only needs a faulty appliance to make its way to its victims. Once it has been breathed in, it replaces the oxygen in the blood, killing off cells and starving vital organs of oxygen.

Many reports have indicated that some 20 million households in the UK are not protecting themselves by taking necessary precautions to detect the gas. Some of the early symptoms to look out for are feelings of nausea, dizziness, headaches, and forgetfulness. The general nature of these symptoms suggest that they can be easily missed or misinterpreted. This is even more so when the person affected moves out of their environment and their symptoms clear.

What can be done?

As there are risks of carbon monoxide poisoning at home and at work, if you are not careful, you can get affected. However, there are some important steps people can take to minimise the dangers of exposure. Once people start to take necessary action, they will be better equipped to deal with any emergency that arises.

If you are about to go on holiday, you should first check if there are any gas appliances where you are staying. Admittedly, this may seem like an usual thing to think about, however it is important for your safety. You have the opportunity to ask to be moved to another location if there is a gas heater at your location. It is also advisable to take a carbon monoxide detector.

How to deal with an emergency

In an emergency situation is best to remain calm and not panic. It is important to stop using the appliance straight away if you suspect a carbon monoxide leak. Only start using it again once it has been checked over by a qualified and registered engineer.

It is advisable to get plenty of ventilation into the affected area. You can do this by opening all the windows and doors. Make sure the entire area is vacated. You should move any persons affected by carbon monoxide poisoning outside into the open air and try to get them plenty of oxygen. You should also call for medical help right away and make sure the persons affected get plenty of rest.

Once the medical professional reaches the affected person, ensure that you immediately inform them of your suspicions of carbon monoxide poisoning. This is essential as the person affected will need to get the appropriate treatment. Also, do not make the mistake of smoking near the contaminated area, or doing anything else to create a spark such as turning the light switch on and off.

Coping with Dry Skin

By Mona Jones

Dry skin is quite often sensitive too, which just makes it more difficult to deal with. Dry sensitive skin is taut because of the deficiency of natural oils and has a tendency to develop small expression lines that will evolve into wrinkles. Moreover, this kind of skin makes one more exposed to allergic reactions, rashes, capillaries rupturing and sudden flushes. Therefore, the taking care of dry sensitive skin proves quite a challenge at times. It is worth mentioning the fact that it afflicts people regardless of age, colour or gender.

You need to follow rigorous rules in your choice of cleansing, moisturising and make-up products when you have dry sensitive skin to take care of. First of all, you have to reduce the amount of products you put on your face. The fact is, the more chemicals you use, the higher the chance of developing rashes. The products have to be fragrance-free and hypo-allergenic so that you don't get red, irritation blotches. Blusher and foundation can pose some difficulties for dry sensitive skin.

Try not to use too much make-up in order to allow your skin to breathe adequately. When you are shopping for make up, other than looking for the hypo-allergenic label, you should also try to ensure that they are oil-free. Furthermore, foundation and blusher should be water-based because they don't clog your pores. Moreover, oil-absorbing foundations are not recommended for dry sensitive skin, because they will make your epidermis even drier.

It is also not recommended that you use exfoliants or astringent products on dry sensitive skin because they can irritate the thin epidermis. The same thing has to be said in relation to cleansing: over-washing of the face means removing the natural oils that lubricate the skin, which will result in an increased dryness.

Furthermore, the day-time moisturiser ought to have an incorporated SPF (sun-protection factor) of at least 15. However, although you may like sunbathing, dry sensitive skin doesn't really permit you to enjoy such outdoor pleasures.

If you have dry sensitive skin, don't expose it to the sun in order to tan it, because you will only achieve premature ageing and possibly even fairly serious health issues. And last but not least, a warning must be given that you should change some of your cosmetic products for other ones along the lines mentioned above.

If you decide that you should to change to another skincare brand, it is very important that you test the product on a small piece of skin in order to test whether it provokes any allergic reactions.

The Many Important Benefits Of Resveratrol

By Heather Crystal

Resveratrol, a phytoalexin found in many dark skinned fruits such as raspberries, cranberries, red grapes, blueberries, mulberries, and red wine, has gotten a lot of attention in the media in recent years. Phytolexins help protect plants against fungal and bacterial infections, and the natural anti body is also rich in antioxidants which can benefit humans. Clinical studies have suggested that this natural compound can help to prevent heart disease and cancer, aid in weight loss, slow down the aging process, and offer many other important health benefits.

It has been discovered that Resveratrol is contain in Japanese knotweed as well as red wine. When it was discovered that red wine contained a high amount of Resveratrol, it seemed to help provide an explanation for the French Paradox. The paradox that had puzzled researchers and experts for quite some time is that the French do not have high levels of heart disease despite having diets rich in saturated fats.

There have been clinical trials done that show that Resveratrol helps to reduce the risk of heart disease. It is rich in antioxidants and it has been shown that this natural compound can help to protect the blood vessels in the heart and prevent blood clots from forming in your heart's arteries. The presence of Resveratrol in red wine might help to explain why the French have a fairly low rate of heart disease despite having diets rich in saturated fats.

It is also known to fight cancer by helping to prevent the body's normal cells from undergoing malignant changes. There have also been clinical studies done with mice that show that Resveratrol helps prevent estrogen in a woman's body from forming breast cancer. The compound also has anti-aging properties as well as other important health benefits.

Losing weight is something else that Resveratrol can help you with. Your metabolism will be sped up and toxins broken down from all of the antioxidants contained in the substance. You will begin to cleanse your body of harmful toxins and you will start to burn of body fat quite naturally.

Would You Like To Live off the Grid?

By Dale Green

Is the idea of moving away from the city to live off the gridone which you've been thinking about? A lot of us have entertained the idea at some point or another, at least idly. It used to be that living off the grid was something that only survivalists or those who just happened to live in extremely isolated areas did. However, it's something that a lot of people are now thinking about; often when looking at their ever-increasing electric bills! If you're interested in living off the grid and have some property in a remote location, then you'll want to make sure you're prepared to make this big change in your lifestyle.

If you're building a new home on your property, then you should decide on what sort of power you want to use in your home before construction begins. Since you're moving here to live off the grid, you should make your energy source part of your home from the ground up.

If you want to use solar energy, then the important thing is that your property will get enough direct sunlight to generate the power you need. You'll get the best results from your solar power system by installing it to face south. Before you install this system, you'll also want to know how much power you'll need to generate to supply your home with electricity and provide hot water.

Are you living somewhere with plenty of wind? Then wind energy will be the answer for you for your power needs. You also can combine wind turbines and wind generators with the solar power systems. This is a great way to provide all your power needs.

Now you will also need to think how you are going to support yourself, if you are so far off the grid, that you have to quit your job to live there. This means often times developing new talents or ones that have been dormant for years.

For example, if you were raised on a farm, you may be able to support yourself with a small organic farm. This is a lifestyle which meshes perfectly with the idea of living off the grid using only clean, sustainable energy sources.

If you're a writer or an artist, then you may be able to continue your current line of work and live off the grid. You'll have a peaceful place to create your work; and you can sell it online and keep in touch with the outside world via email and phone (make sure that the area has cell phone reception and that you can get on the web though).

Do you find the idea of living off the gridattractive? It can be a viable way to live for many people - just keep in mind that you'll have to be careful about your power usage. You'll have to produce all of your own energy; and being an energy hog and living off the grid are not compatible.

Best Times To Visit Russia According To The Climate

By Kenneth Elliott

Since Russia is a large country, it has a continental climate. Russia is not protected from the Arctic and North Atlantic influence and it has mountains that block the moderating temperatures from Pacific and Indian oceans. Large areas of the country are covered by snow for six months. So before you go to Russia on a holiday, make sure you get your timing right. No matter what time you go, there is always something to do but if you are specific about what you want to do, you will have to keep an eye on the climatic changes.

Russia has two main seasons, winter and summer. The winters are extremely cold and long with only about six hours of daylight. In Moscow, it is only in the mid summer which is July and August that the temperature is pleasantly warm. It gets little rainfall as most of the precipitation comes in the form of snow. November is the time when the season changes to winter and this time is quite unpleasant.

The most popular travel destinations of Russia are Moscow and St. Petersburg. A good time to visit the two cities would be May and June. Both the cities will be vibrant with a lot of carnivals, concerts and such other special events. The warn season lasts for about four months and the people of Russia will be rushing around to make the most of the summer. If you want to come during winter season, you can go snow boarding in Khibiny Mountains in January and February.

Around the beginning of July, St. Petersburg will experience daylight all day long. These White Nights are special and are worth experiencing. Autumn in Russia is beautiful with the bright trees and sunny weather. People are out to make the most of the time before snow comes in and the winter begins. This is a nice time to be visit Russia.

Siberia is another destination of visitors on holiday who visit Rusia. The unique landscape, the Baikal Lake and the Altai mountain make Siberia a must visit place for a few days. This area is very remote. If you want to get away from society for a little while this is the place to go. Because it is so remote it gives a feeling of being disconnected from the world. The climate change in Siberia is also quite remarkable, you may want to fix the time of visit depending on what you wish to do in Russia. Krasnoyarsk located along the river is a beautiful place if you are in Russia for sightseeing.

The only time you should not visit Russia is November. It is usually rainy and cold and not at all fun. September and December is party time in Russia and you will have loads of fun if you plan your visit around this time. In September you may get to hear Russian and foreign musicians play.

From mid- October to mid- April, it will be too cold to camp outside so skip this time also if you are looking for outdoor activities, except snow boarding of course. Careful planning of your activities will make sure that no unpleasant surprises are sprung on you by Mother Nature.

Handling Low Water Pressure

By Tal Potishman

Dealing with low water pressure in your shower can become very much a nuisance, particularly if you are not used to it. This is especially the case if the water pressure becomes so low, that the flow of water comes down to a trickle. Low water pressure is normally caused by two different appliances being used at the same time, such as the washing machine and the shower. Your shower might be working fine one minute, however you notice a massive change in the pressure when another appliance in the house starts getting used.

In most cases, you will notice that the low water pressure occurs in other areas around the house. However, if you notice that the problem is only occurring in the use of your shower, than it will be advisable to get the shower checked for any obstructions that may be causing the low water pressure.

So what are the reasons for it?

There can be a number of contributing factors to why you are experiencing low water pressure problems. Often low water pressure is caused by pipes that are damaged or leaking. Some pipes are so old that they have been damaged by corroding. Before anything is done, it is important to have the cause identified first.

Other potential causes of low water pressure can include:

Faulty design or installation

Water leaks

Service pipes getting blocked

Temporary reductions in pressure due to maintenance works of water mains

Where your property is located also plays an important part in determining your water pressure. For instance if you are based at the top of the hill, it is likely that you will experience low water pressure as opposed to if you were based at the bottom of the hill.

What time of day you use the water can also make a big difference. During the daytime the demand can be quite high which can result in low water pressure. The rest of the day, you will probably experience high water pressure due to less demand.

Many of the older houses or houses that have been built with galvanized iron pipes, it is inevitable that mineral deposits will build up. Hot water and horizontal pipes are an additional contributing factor to this. If you feel that this is what is causing the problem, it is advisable to call a professional plumber in to check the repair work you will need to do.

What is the obligation of the water companies?

The water companies have to keep us supplied with water constantly, and the pressure needs to be enough so that the water can reach the upper floors of the house. However, this does not apply to buildings which use commercial pumped systems, such as blocks of flats.

If you are finding it difficult in dealing with low water pressure, and wish to take action, the smaller things you should check yourself. However, it could be that your problems are on a much wider-scale with leaking pipes and pipe corrosion. In these circumstances your plumber should be called to repair the problem and prevent it from getting any bigger.

Solar Energy Heating System - What They Are & How To Use Them!

By Jim Martin

Get answers to all your questions about solar energy heating system and find out if they are a healthy alternative.

Solar energy heating system: Meaning and significance

The rays of sunlight produce radiant energy. When this radiant energy is transformed into several other energy forms, it is called solar energy. When this solar energy is tapped, processed in order to convert it to generated heat (i.e. thermal power), the technique is called solar thermal energy. Several alternative purposes, like heating water, cooling the space, warming up the space as well as production of process heat, are served by the use of solar energy heating units. To raise the temperature of water, solar collectors are used in these solar heating cells. The modern, up-to-date techniques that are used ensure that these systems function at high levels of efficiency as well as deliver top-quality output. Since these solar heating systems are sophisticated and use the latest technology, they can even help users effectively get back a significant portion of their initial investments on the system.

Get to know how a solar energy system works

Solar energy heating systems can be used to warm water in domestic homes. In such cases, evacuated tube collecting devices as well as plate collectors that are flat and glazed are included in the heating system. For increasing the temperature of swimming pools, plate collectors that are unglazed are used instead. At several industries and other profit-making institutions, techniques of concentrating solar power are used to generate process heat. An inverter, two (or, three) solar energy collectors and battery sets make up the main constituents of an average solar energy heating system. Greater amounts of solar energy can be trapped if more number of solar collectors is used. The radiant energy that the sun generates gets captured by the aptly designed collectors. After trapping the radiant energy, it is converted to DC electrical energy. Then it is passed on to the inverter, which transforms the DC current into AC electrical power that can be put to practical use. Silicon is used in most cases as the semiconductor element that is used inside the solar collectors. The presence of the inverter is crucial, since it helps the heating system to generate electricity at requisite rates. The final users might also find some amount of electricity lying in excess, even after all their power requirements have been met. In such cases, the excess amount of electric power is stored in the batteries. Such storage is important, for this electricity can be retrieved by the solar power system later for future usage. If there are still some extra amounts of electricity available, it can be sold off to owners of the organization. As a result, some savings can easily made by the users.

The entire solar power heating system is regulated, and the efficiency of its batteries is determined generally by a charge controller. Several wires, hardware materials and testers are also required in the solar energy heating system, so that the batteries can be continuously kept functioning, and the entire cell can be set up. However, not all domestic gadgets and appliances can be run by using the solar energy heating systems. Nor is it able to provide enough power to meet the entire requirements. Even so, these systems are of extremely high utility for displaying exactly how a solar power generator actually functions.

Advisability of using a solar heating system: A health perspective

There are quite a number of additional health benefits that would be available only if a solar heating system is used. In the presence of enough amounts of solar energy, a low temperature of air helps people feel comfortable. The users are also able to cut down on excess electricity expenses in cases where the air is at low temperature levels. The chances of spreading of a number of diseases is also lowered, since pet dander, dust, bacteria, dirt and other viruses are prevented from being flown about across the entire house during the winter season. In cases where the breathing passage becomes too dry, infections might occur in this passage. A solar heating system helps to prevent such a scenario. Solar power systems do not generally disturb the interior arrangements of furniture, since they do not take up an unnecessarily large space. Neither do these systems have blowers, ensuring that no sound disturbances are generated. Thus, the cells are sound-free, and can be kept within the reach of kids as well. In comparison to the traditional baseboard heating units or the forced hot air cells, these solar heating systems offer much greater economic advantages as well. Numerous companies are indeed cropping up by the day, with each boasting to possess the most advanced solar technology. The more efficient systems do cost a bit higher than the other units as well. During the night, these solar heating units need not work either, and the energy stored by the batteries is used at these times. A basic understanding of these systems and their functioning can help you acquire the one you need. Thus, you should ideally select the solar heating cell that would perfectly match your requirements. That would indeed make the world a better place to live in for the future generations.

In order to know the correct technique of setting up a solar energy heating system, you should consult a training guide. Proper installation procedures of the system are also provided, so that it can keep the environment clean. A training manual would also help you know the ideal place for setting up the system, the wiring techniques that should be used, and the precautionary methods that should be adopted. You can also get to know how to get the batteries for free, and the other components at relatively cheap prices. Once all this information is available to you, installing a solar energy heating system becomes much easier.

What Are Solar Power Systems: Learn the FACTS here!

By Jim Martin

Find out important facts about solar power systems and the various factors that make them so popular, in this article.

Most people now are aware of the benefits of solar power systems, which can generate electricity from the rays of the sun. This widespread awareness is undoubtedly, mainly because of the ever-increasing popularity of these systems in all parts of the US, as well as in various other nations. Hence, an understanding of how these systems function should be an interesting study. The process, in which the solar power systems can trap, store and process energy to produce electricity, as also their method of working on a cloudy day when there is no sun in the sky, would form the main focus of this discourse.

The silicon wafers present in the solar power systems are equipped to trap the photons in the rays of the sun. These photons can then be transformed into DC electrical power. Once this DC current is has been converted to 120 volt usable AC electric power, it can be attached to the electrical framework of the building or plugged into the electronic grid systems directly. However, a major disadvantage might be the fact that, not everyone associated with the working of the solar power systems know the merits or demerits or the hazards associated with it. Thus, one needs to be extra careful while choosing the system. Past records of the company and its business history need to be studied.

Different factors have to be kept under consideration, when one selects a solar power system. Such important factors include: i). the add-on features that come with a grid-tied solar system, ii). Chief parts of the system, iii). Monitoring the progress of the system, iv). The main factors of success, v). The ways to operate and properly maintain the unit.

Solar power systems with grid-tied facilities: For generating a continuous supply of power throughout the day, grid-tied solar power systems are considered to be ideal. These systems are also relatively cheap as well. One of the undesirable features of a normal solar power system is that, while the systems can easily generate power at all times during the day, they stop working as soon as the sun goes down. However the grid-tied solar power systems can store the extra electricity generated in the grid, so that it could be easily retrieved and utilized at night. Excess electricity that is produced during the day time can also be sold off for money. This in fact, helps in offsetting the cost of the system. In the absence of these grids, battery backups would have been needed, and that would have incurred much greater expenses.

Chief components of solar power systems: At the core of the solar power systems are the solar or photovoltaic cells. Generally, a 'module' is created by assembling several of these cells. Once some of these modules are attached together, we can create a solar panel. The panel then needs to be installed at such sites that receive abundant sunlight during most parts of the day, such as on the rooftop. Even those who are not experts have frequently seen these solar panels, which are rather prominent anyway. Hence, the panels can be said to be the point of introduction of people to solar power systems.

Apart from the solar panel, there are other crucial components of the system too. An inverter is one such, and it is responsible for transforming DC electric power into 120 volt AC electrical current that can be put to practical use. The inverter needs to have the requisite cycles too. For connecting the different parts of the solar power system, wires are generally used. For setting up the solar panels in the best way, clamps and holders (made of non-conducting materials) are used. Racks can fix up the panels on the roof. If any of the above components is not present, proper functioning of the system becomes almost impossible.

Monitoring progress via the web: Users can easily keep a close eye on how the solar energy systems are functioning, by making use of several web browsers. Portable devices are used for this monitoring purpose as well.

Main factors of success - Most established suppliers of solar energy units are aware of these factors. The success factors include monitoring the climate to facilitate the process of electricity generation, and determining the direction in which, if the system is placed, it would yield the best results. As a case in point, if there is fog in the morning at San Francisco, chances are that the best yields of electric power would be available in the middle of the afternoon. TVs and computers that have been powered but are kept plugged in, and any other such 'phantom loads' need also be eliminated to ensure that the system operates at best efficiency. If all the above factors are closely examined, and all requisite measures are adopted, the system is more likely to operate in an effective manner.

Mode of working and maintaining the system - The solar power panels need to be thoroughly cleaned at least once a year. The batteries (if present) used in the system need also be replaced after every 5 to 10 years.

There are several benefits to be enjoyed once solar power systems are installed. You should ideally consult a manual that offers detailed instructions on the procedure of installing the system, the best spot where it should be placed, as well as wiring the system. Such a guide would also let you know how you can get the components at reduced prices, the batteries for free, and the safety measures as well. All these instructions would help you greatly in setting up efficiently your home solar power system.

Solar Power Roof Vents: Make Them Work For You

By Jim Martin

Discover how solar power roof vents work and find out the advantages and disadvantages of using them, right here!

Solar power roof vents: Understanding the concepts

In the modern day world, most people are aware of the tremendous benefits that solar energy holds out as an energy resource. In fact, in the past few years, we have been using solar energy increasingly, indicating that this energy source is indeed invaluable. The rays of sun comprise of waves of electromagnetic nature and these waves get absorbed in the atmosphere of the earth, and radiant energy is generated as a result. Several different usable forms of energy can be obtained, as per human needs, from this radiant energy. When solar power generators are applied to store, harness and convert radiant energy to other forms of energy, it is called solar energy. Solar power roof vents are found to be the most in-demand of all different types of solar power generators that are currently available. This is not surprising, since the solar power roof vents do indeed have a lot of extra benefits to offer.

Need of installing a solar power roof vent and the working techniques involved

For adequate ventilation facilities of any house, having roof vents, whether run by electricity or solar power, is an absolute must. During the summer, the roof tiles in any home get heated up by the radiant energy that the sun generates. This in turn, results in the warming of the entire air in the home. Hence, to keep our homes cool, proper ventilation facilities, particularly in the attic or the top floor, is required. Also, many of our everyday household chores (like, cooking, cloth-washing and having a shower) generates large amounts of water vapor, which also needs to be ventilated out. Hence, every house should ideally have a well-designed roof vent.

For keeping the air inside your home cool, you should ideally opt for solar power roof vents. They can function at all times of the day, unlike the conventionally used roof louvers. These roof vents have the capacity to tap and store sunlight and convert it to solar energy. Electric power can then be generated by harnessing this solar energy. At the core of these solar power vents resides a motor working at high efficiency, and this is what makes the electricity. Environment friendliness is one of the major features of these solar power roof vents, and they can also help users save on excess consumption of power. A typical power vent is generally regulated by a thermostat, and these devices stop working as soon as their temperature rises beyond a certain level. Unlike them, solar power roof vents keep the rooms of a home properly ventilated all round the day, since they do not stop working. No waste products and/or pollutants are produced as well. The raw material used by these roof vents, i.e., sunlight, is also obtainable totally free of cost. The method of working of the vent resembles an active ventilation process, since external air enters the home through the attic, and is driven out via the solar roof vents. When people use these solar vents, the temperature inside the home remains low too. As a result, air conditioners need not be used much. This keeps the electricity bills within reasonable limits as well.

There are two separate principal components of an average solar vent: a DC motor of 24 volts and a solar panel. It is aimed at capturing and storing solar energy directly from the sun. The DC motor then receives this energy, and converts it to electrical power. The solar panel can easily collect solar energy even on days that are cloudy, with diffused light conditions, or on days of bad weather. Apart from the above, the technique of using solar power has certain other added advantages too. For example, no extra electric wiring networks are required for installing the system, and the unit is generally put up independent of the dome. The dome used is generally of a low profile and is galvanized. In most cases, it is made of rust resistant steel.

Merits and demerits of solar power roof vents

If used in the proper manner, the solar power roof vents are great for saving power. The power-saving capacity of the vents however, depends on a few factors. These include the amount of space in a home that is taken up by the attic, the expertise with which the attic had been insulated, the rate at which electric power is received and the ventilation facilities that is present. Passive air convection is the technique of working of most conventional attic vents. However, the solar power vents help to keep a home more or less cool all round the day, since air is forced into the house at all times by these vents. However, usage of solar power roof vents is not without its associated disadvantages. For example, if a house, or a building, has a drop ceiling, solar power roof vents cannot offer too many benefits. The same is the case with homes that are already so designed as to facilitate free and smooth circulation of air. However, the solar energy powered roof vents are being used more and more today. Indeed, these vents are ideal for lighting up your house by using solar energy, and for driving out excess amounts of moisture as well.

There are multifarious financial, and ecological benefits to be enjoyed, once solar power roof vents are installed. You can install a solar power system in the home, on your own too. However, prior to doing so, you should ideally consult a guide, which explains the proper methods to install the system, the place where it should be set up for the optimal output, and also for formation about the wiring. Such a manual would also instruct you on how to acquire the components at rather cheap prices and the batteries totally free. You must also know about the safety measures. If all this information is adequately garnered, you can easily set up an efficient solar power system at your home.

Combi Boilers

By Tal Potishman

Most of the recent reports suggest that more people are purchasing high efficiency combi boilers than ever before. In fact they are so popular that they are accounting for over 70% of the entire marketplace. There are many reasons why combi boilers remain such a popular choice. The installation process is quite manageable, they are easy to run, and using them is not hard either. In examining the different options, it is important for the customer to know what they are looking for, and which boiler will suit those needs. This is especially important now, given today's economic climate.

The current recession has changed the dynamics of consumer spending. Purchases that were once easily made before without a caution to the wind are now a thing of the past. However, heating and hot water are fundamental human needs, and something that people don't mind spending a little money on.

Many of the reports indicate that gas central heating and hot water is the UK consumer's main choice and the combi boiler is the most common choice of boiler. With advancements in technology happening every day, it is possible that this might change over the next decade or so, however in this present time, combi boilers remain a popular choice.

Advantages in using combi boilers

There are many reasons why combi boilers are so efficient and easy to use. They are useful in providing all the heating and hot water you need. However, they are useful for other purposes too. For example, if you have shortage of room, you do not need to worry with a combi boiler, as it is small and compact enough to fit inside a kitchen unit or even under the stairs. In addition, you do not waste unnecessary hot water as it is only created when it is actually required. As it does not store hot water, there is no need for a tank or any other additional plumbing.

Disadvantages of using combi boilers

One disadvantage with combi boilers is that they are not easy to repair if something goes wrong. Most consumers opt to replace the entire unit if the problem is quite extensive and cannot be fixed. However, this is not always the case, and some installers are able to fix the problem rather than replacing the entire system.

Another bit of adjusting that some consumers have to do is getting used to the delivery time of useable hot water. You may be used to receiving hot water within seconds of turning the hot water tap, however will not be too pleased if you find yourself waiting a bit longer. The reason for the delay is because with a combi boiler, the water flow rate is not as good as a traditional storage cylinder. It is possible for some people to get used to this, however many manufacturers are now pushing for improvements to be made.

Should I purchase the combi boiler?

Like most other boilers, combi boilers have their positive points and negative points. It all depends on what you are looking for and what will suit you best. As purchasing a boiler is a long-term investment, is best to seek some professional advice first. This way you can consider all your options before reaching a final decision.

What Is The Water Fuel Cell?

By Alexis Jameson

Did Stan Meyer have a gold mine when he first came up with the concept of water fuel cells being used in cars? Most people would tell you no, it's not a possible situation, it isn't scientifically possible. But he did drive around in a vehicle which was said to contain the water fuel cell in it. So what is the true story, and will we ever really know?

A water fuel cell is where water can be used to power a car. A device is placed into the vehicle, which will separate hydrogen and oxygen. This hydrogen will than propel the car and have you running not on gas anymore, but on water fuel. Simply put it's a technology that could save tons of money.

Wow now if your car could really run on water and the Earth is made up of 70% water? Yes the implications there are humongous. In fact many feel that Meyer was removed from this world in order for the oil companies to survive. After all with such a huge supply of water, and oil being so expensive? Well you can get the main idea behind that point very easily.

Interesting to note on this subject is that the first internal combustion engines were actually ran on hydrogen. If they knew of this technology so long ago, why isn't it used more often? Must you really question who has the control in the world? Many people believe that what Meyer started was shortened effectively by his early death. In fact it's thought that his death was not really an aneurysm, but some sort of government conspiracy to stop his knowledge from reaching the people.

Conspiracy or not? Will you ever prove that Kennedy was not assassinated by Oswald? Right you get the point behind all this water fuel technology. It's a battle between two opposing teams and in the long run the one with the most money will come out on top. But isn't that a bit ridiculous?

Should life be more about making the world a better place to live in? In fact if you were to change over every vehicle that operated on gas to a water fuel cell, would we have any more wars? Think about it, war is fought over oil or some other thing in most cases, if we don't need oil, what will there be to fight about?

Plus the amount of pollution that is in the air would no longer be there, oil would not need to be taken from the ground, no tankers who accidentally spring a leak in the water and kill billions of sea life. Let's look at the water fuel cell a bit closer and see if it will really help us out.

DIY Solar Energy - Discover How to Slash Your Power Bills

By Vincent Vega

There is simply no doubt about it, DIY solar energy is seeing a major surge in popularity. It really is no surprise though when you consider the rising price of energy and the increased awareness of how we manage our planet and its resources. And this lousy recession that we can't seem to get out of certainly adds to the attractiveness of harnessing a renewable energy resource, in this case, the sun.

The use of solar panels can assuredly lessen our electricity costs to the point where an electricity bill becomes a minuscule part of our budgets. In addition, if you are determined you can add together enough solar cells and solar panels to completely rid of your electricity bill entirely. One could even generate extra electricity per month that they could turn around and sell it back to the electric company as well.

With the extraordinarily high fuel costs that we have observed over the last three years, people currently and perhaps for the first time in large numbers, actually taking a closer and serious look at alternative energy sources. We have certainly become gratified when it is not costly to do so, however with the rising expense of utilities the time of gratification has ended. We simply cannot afford it any longer.

DIY solar energy becomes more alluring when you add in the great tax advantages that people who use the alternative energy get. Not only that, but the Obama administration favors and promotes the use of renewable, natural energy sources such as solar and wind power energy. It is safe to assume that we will see a larger rise of this trend in the future.

Most likely the biggest problem with DIY solar energy is the initial expenses involved. Purchasing solar panels and having them installed involves a lot of money. It can cost tens of thousands of dollars to convert an average sized home to use solar energy. Photovoltaic cells are very expensive, and are a huge part of this costly venture.

But what if you could make your own solar cells and string them together into solar panels? Not only will you save thousands of dollars on parts and labor but you will also enjoy the long-term savings that come with solar energy. Not only will they pay for themselves over time but they will also increase the resale value of your home.

Well I have good news, it absolutely is possible to build your own DIY solar energy system and you can do it for as little as $200 per solar panel. And the surprising thing is that it is really not that difficult to do. With parts and supplies you can get from your local hardware store or home improvement center and common household tools, you can build your own solar panels and generate electricity to power your home.

There are many amazing instructional programs available on the internet that actually help you out with everything involved in building your own solar energy system for your home and as well teach you how to construct wind power generators for an extra power energy source. For the cost of $50, you can have the program that you want sent to you straight away to your computer so that you can start immediately with no wait involved.

A do-it-yourself solar energy project is not nearly as difficult as one may think. With just using common household tools you'll have your first solar panel completed in no time and will begin generating electricity from the sun. Then it will be you that will be radiating from the satisfaction that you will not only be saving a substantial amount of money, but will also be doing your part in reducing our carbon footprint.

Thinking About A Water Fuel Cell Car?

By Alexis Jameson

Gasoline prices are rising every day, and many people are searching for a more economical solution. Many have decided to make use of water fuel cell technology, but many others have a lot of questions about this option. These days, though, you might have to take whatever you can get, so it's good to look into this option.

Oil is becoming increasingly hard to come by, but water is still as easy to find as ever. Several years ago, nobody would have believed it is possible to fuel a car with water, and many are still doubtful that such a thing is even conceivable, convinced that somebody is trying to trick them. It can be helpful to know there are several myths surrounding this issue.

What you must realize is that, technically, the water isn't really powering the vehicle. What it is doing is letting its fuel cells and the car battery extract from it a gas known as HHO. This works in addition to the gasoline you already put into your car and reduces the amount of it required to get the car running from place to place on a regular basis.

It's natural for people to be worried about their safety when trying something new, especially when that involves the potentially dangerous combination of a car engine and a very powerful type of fuel. Fortunately, because of the way the cells work, your engine will only ever get exactly as much HHO as it needs, and never an excessive amount.

When people make claims about the creditability of this option, they usually point to how few people are actually selling such products. However, it must be remembered that it is still a relatively new idea. Also, the field poses a huge threat to the giant gas industry currently in place, and you can understand how such a thing might not be so popular.

If you're interested in making use of these cells but don't have the money to buy a new car, you can simply make the cells on your own and use them on your existing car. You'll only need to spend about $200 on a blueprint and instructions, which you'll be able to follow so that you can turn your car into one that will save you money and the environment from extra pollution.

As you can see, water fuel cells do indeed exist and have many great qualities. Let go of your apprehension and make use of this new technology today.

DIY Wind Power - Unlock the Power of the Wind

By Sandy Powers

As energy costs rise and our natural resources of coal and oil diminish, solar and wind power has gained a place of prominence in the world of renewable resources. Residential wind turbines grow in popularity day by day and over the past decade have had a serious impact on the DIY wind power market. If you are one of those people who are considering this form of energy to supplement your home energy needs you will be able to harness the natures energy to not only produce energy but to save you money in the process.

Wind power and solar panels are becoming a more and more popular option among home owners. People are becoming aware of the beneficial nature of this type of energy. Not only is it a continuously renewable resource but it does not harm the environment and leaves no carbon footprint. Natural energy generation is the responsible energy option and as technology advances it becomes more feasible for the average person.

So How Does DIY Wind Power Work

Whether you refer to wind power generators as turbines or windmills matters little. The two names are pretty much synonymous. Wind power generators, or turbines, or windmills if you prefer, have blades that rotate by the power of the wind and that turning motion, or torquing of the axis captures the energy that is converted into electricity.

The spinning of the blades is what is known as kinetic energy. Kinetic is simply another way of saying physical. The kinetic energy then spins the blades and the energy is collected by the motion generated from the wind. Simply put, the faster the blades spin, the more energy is generated. In the case of a home wind generator, that energy is collected and stored in a battery and can be tapped at any time when an electrical power source is needed.

Can DIY Wind Power Really Save Me Money

There are a lot of variables in the equation as to how much money you can save using DIY wind power, but the bottom line is that you will save money. How much is determined by how much wind you have and how efficiently it is captured.

DIY wind power systems are very inexpensive to build. For under $200 in materials you can buy everything you need at your local hardware store or large home improvement store. And what makes this project even better is that it is easy to build. Almost anyone can undertake the construction of a home wind power system and do so with success.

Power Needs of the Average Home

One of the big concerns of anyone considering the DIY wind power option wonders how much energy they need to produce and what is required to produce it. Most homes use approximately 100,000KWH of electricity a year. An average home use wind turbine will generate between 5 and 15W of electricity which is plenty for most homes. An additional advantage is that if you do create more electricity than you use, most power companies will buy it from you thus generating an additional source of revenue for you.

The only down side of homemade wind turbines is that they can be noisy. If properly maintained they are not exceptionally noisy. When the wind blows, the movement over the blades creates a whistling sound. Improperly cared for parts will make extra noise as does any moving machinery. Keeping the properly maintained and oiled is extremely important for minimizing sound. It is also a better option to build your turbine out of PVC rather than wood as wood will not hold up nearly as long.

As stated before, constructing your own DIY wind power is not difficult. It is a project that can be handled by just about anyone that is enthusiastic enough to take it on. It can actually be quite enjoyable... and very fulfilling.

An Introduction To The DIY Hydrogen Generator

By Alexis Jameson

The money isn't by any means the only reason to switch over to a DIY hydrogen generator. There are also the many things you'll do for the world around you, in terms of plugging into a whole new source of energy and turning away from the oil we have to drill to get. Yet, the money probably is the most important factor for yet. With normal gasoline more expensive than ever, a better option sounds more appealing all the time.

In case you aren't familiar with what a hydrogen generator actually is, it is something that will allow you turn water into elements that can be used in Brown's gas. This fuel is then used to power the vehicle without having to use the kind of gas you normally would, and letting the car basically run on water.

While you could just go get a hydrogen car, it would be very expensive if you could even find one. When you can't, making the generator is your next best option. This probably sounds like a lot of work, but it's really much less threatening than it seems, depending on how you go about getting things done.

Your first option is the easiest, though it will also be the most expensive. How expensive it will be depends on how smart a shopper you are, because you're going to need to look for a hydrogen kit. They make these for both cars and trucks, but also for all types of vehicles in a more universal model.

Then, there are a couple of methods that will allow you to save money. Either way, though, you'll need a guide and the right tools. One option is to buy everything you need and start from scratch. You'll find that most of the materials you'll need are very easy to find and are extremely affordable.

If you feel up to taking things a step further, you'll be able to spend almost nothing. This is because the materials in general are so common, you'll be able to scrap most of them from items already in your garage. You'll need to put time and effort into this, though, so make sure you feel up to the task ahead of time.

No matter what you decide, you should aim to fit in with your skill set and budget. In the end, though, no matter how much money or time you have to set aside, you'll be glad you made this decision. Your wallet will thank you and you'll feel good about doing your part to help the world as well.

Benefits Of Plastic Pipes

By Tal Potishman

Plastic piping has been around for many years and is quite popular. This is due to the many unique qualities it possesses. Some of them include:

Green benefits: plastic materials can be recycled

Low transportation costs: Due to their lightweight nature

Low friction loss: As the surfaces of plastic pipes are generally quite smooth, they require less power to transmit fluids in plastic piping compared with other piping systems. Furthermore, they offer less frictional resistance to the fluids flowing through them and help minimise the build up of scale and other deposits

Minimal energy requirements: This is in comparison with other non-metallic materials and there is also minimal increase of energy requirement over the lifetime of the piping

Good chemical resistance: Plastic piping has the ability to handle a wide variety of chemical solutions

The list outlined above are just some of the advantages of using plastic pipes. Plastic piping also has a much lower thermal conductivity than other piping materials. The lower thermal conductivity helps eliminate or greatly reduce the need for insulation later.

Mostly known for its lightweight nature and its flexibility, plastic piping is becoming more well known and popular amongst consumers. The smaller pipes are quite popular for having the ability to be easily manoeuvred around through obstructions.

Why is plastic piping used?

In the industry, plastic piping is used to transport fluids, or anything that can flow from one destination to the other. Most of the piping engineers are ultimately responsible for finding the most safe and efficient manner possible for transporting the fluid to wherever it needs to go. In selecting the most suitable piping material for the job, a number of factors come into consideration.

Plastic piping is not seen as being a suitable replacement for more traditional piping materials such as concrete or metal. This is because the weight of the load being transported or the corrosiveness of the fluid are all important considerations. It depends on what qualities the plastic pipe has.

Plastic pipe verses Metal pipe

There are many reasons why a plastic pipe can prove to be a worthy opponent to a metal pipe. It is cheaper to install and can even do the job better than a metal pipe in some cases. There are many reasons behind this. Plastic pipes are more resistant to corrosion than metal. It will be hard to find a plastic pipe jamming, or sticking because of rust or corrosion. In addition, the smooth surface of a plastic pipe allows it to keep its condition for many years. However, metal pipes are bound to scale and corrode over a period of time.

Most engineers are aware of the unique qualities of plastic piping, and realize that they are not substitutes for other conventional pipes. Plastic piping is usually chosen for its lightweight, and non-corrosive properties. There are many different types of plastic, suitable for different purposes.

Using Anti-Scald Products

By Tal Potishman

Much of the ideology behind ant-scald taps, valves and showers stems from helping to prevent people suffering from injuries through scalding in the shower. Many of the public institutions have been quick to recognise the importance of these devices and have installed them in their bathrooms. However, they have not increased in popularity with the public yet, as their benefits are not so widely recognised. Anti-scald devices are particularly beneficial in homes with the elderly or very young children.

You may have grown up in a house where you were used to using the shower and screaming at he top of your lungs every time someone flushed the toilet or used the washing machine, as it caused the water in the shower to change from reasonably warm to scalding hot or freezing cold.

Although you may be used to this and can quickly react to prevent yourself from getting injured, you will need to be more cautious with young children in the house. This should be especially the case if the change in temperature is particularly intensive. A reasonable temperature is necessary in the house for young children or the elderly. It should be noted that young children and the elderly have particularly sensitive skin and will be subject to suffering serious burns if the water temperature changes suddenly.

An anti-scald shower is advantageous as you will not have to deal with this problem because the water will never turn too hot or cold. In addition, any use of domestic appliances around the house such as the dishwasher or the washing machine will not affect the temperature of the shower. The valve may control only the shower, or if it is a diverter valve, both the shower and tub. It will work to keep the water temperature at a safe level, despite fluctuations in water supply lines.

You can get anti-scald valves for your tubs and showers as they will help minimize the risk of being scalded by hot water. However, be aware that whilst anti-scald valves help minimize the chances of you getting scalded, it does not offer complete foolproof protection. There is still potential for being harmed if you do not use them properly.

A pressure-balanced shower valve is designed specifically to compensate for changes in water pressure. The shower valve looks normal from the outside, however it has a special diaphragm or piston mechanism inside that moves with a change in water pressure to immediately balance the pressure of the hot and cold water inputs. The valves are there to maintain the temperature of the water.

It has been reported that there are around 20 deaths and nearly 600 serious injuries in the UK each year due to people not having adequate ant-scald equipment installed in their homes. It is our responsibility to ensure that more people become aware of the dangers involved in not having adequate protection installed in their showers. Anti-scald devices should be installed in every bathroom so that the hot water can be properly provided in the safest manner possible.

Computer Viruses and the Negative Impact on Business

By Amy Nutt

Computers are very detailed machines that function by set rules, codes and languages. Everything follows a pattern and schedule in order to operate efficiently. Computer viruses can affect the cosmetics of a computer such as the screen and display appearances or the simple functions such as the way the keyboard operates or the functionality of the drives. Some of these symptoms may seem to be only a minor inconvenience, but when you see these signs you should wonder what may have caused the change and what else may be going on that you can't see. Other symptoms can include loss of files, decrease in memory space, slow operation and damaged programs.

The writer of the virus determines how they will infect the system as well as what they want the virus to do. In most cases, a virus will perform damage to the host system, and may do this while performing another function such as retrieving information, and then spread to the remainder of the network.

A computer virus is similar to a medical virus in that it often occurs even when precautions were taken to prevent it. Particularly malicious viruses steal information and data, which may be confidential. This may be customer or client information of a personal nature whether medical, financial or some other form. It may be company information specific to employee's records, user names and passwords or other functions of the business. Information may simultaneously be erased. It can pick up information from any other computer in the network. It can locate other users and obtain their information.

There are many programs available and they are a must-have for an individual's personal computer and certainly for that of a business. Strong measures must be taken to prevent viruses within a company, as one infected computer is opening the door to the entire network, putting clients, customers and even employees at risk. Businesses should understand that the condition of their system is susceptible to change with every employee that signs into the network. Training should be instituted to prevent damage by teaching employees how to determine what is safe use of the system, how to update their protection programs and how to know if something is questionable and when to bring it to the attention of the IT department. It is always helpful to set up the virus protection programs to run automatically and the individual systems or the network as a whole can be set to automatically update the programs that are install along with fixes and patches as needed. In addition to anti-virus removal programs a filter may also help to block viruses.

While the anti-virus is placed inside the firewall, a filter is placed on the outside and closer to the server. Users may be limited as far as what can be received and may not be able to open attachments. This will undoubtedly create an inconvenience, though it is in the best interest of the company and will save money by eliminating loss of business if a shutdown is needed to correct a problem. A virus usually spreads very quickly and for a large company this can be costly. Prevention is always the least costly way to reduce the risk of virus.

Flushing Your Central Heating System

By Tal Potishman

There are a number of reasons why you should consider flushing your central heating system before you decide to install a new boiler. Below are some of the signs to look out for that your central heating may need flushing:

You notice that your heating system is slower than before in starting up

Your boiler starts to make unpleasant noises

You've noticed the formation of sludge

Your radiators need bleeding quite regularly

The treatment of your water will largely affect how efficiently your boiler runs. The treatment of your water is so important that it can even affect your heating system and boiler's longevity. Most people are not actually aware of this and an investigation carried out of 90 mains central heating systems showed that less than half were treated correctly and some of them hadn't had any element of chemical flushing at all.

The poor treatment of water has not been helped by reports which suggest that many new boilers that are installed in the UK are often installed within existing heating systems where old radiators and pipework are commonplace. The differences in overall efficiency between flushed systems and non-flushed systems can be demonstrated by some tests that were carried out. Unsurprisingly, the results indicated that the systems that had been flushed showed a 6% improvement in efficiency in the heating system in comparison to an old system.

It is important to be aware of the fact that most central heating systems are exposed to the atmosphere allowing oxygen to enter the water. This results in sludge building up in the pipework, which can result in a wide range of problems if left untreated.

Therefore it is important to note, that just installing a new boiler is not enough if you do not make sure that your water treatment is up to standard. In order to maximise the full efficiency of your boiler you need to ensure that you focus on your water treatment otherwise your investment will be wasted.

So what benefits will you gain from flushing out the central heating system?

Flushing ensures that the whole system is cleaned, including underfloor pipework

The noise coming from your boiler will be fixed

The treatment prevents further corrosion

The negative aspects of using the flushing system

How successful the power flush is will depend on various factors. In some cases, the level of corrosion in the central heating systems will be quite extensive. In these circumstances the flushing process is unlikely to solve the problem.

If your system has been neglected for a substantial amount of time, there may be severe corrosion in the pipework, or the boiler and it is quite likely that even after the power flushing some radiators will not work properly.

How Saving Light Bulbs Can Put Your Child Though College

By Justin Luyt

With energy cost on the rising|increase) and as we are set in a recession, reducing expenses are most families priority. Families don't frequently think about it, but energy saving light bulbs can save homeowners quite a lot of money on their utility bill. But before you decide on buying energy efficient light bulbs, look at the initial initial cost.

I admire Jack Welsh and the other day I head over to the GE Lighting website. I was quite impressed by the calculator they had on this website that helps you see how much money you will save by installing energy saving light bulbs. It calculates it based on 4-hour usage and a electricity rate of $0.10 per kWh.

By only swapping out 4 100-Watt regular light bulbs with 4 x 26-Watt energy saving light bulbs, it is calculated that indeed over 1 year you will be saving $42.22. The reason I used 4 x 100-Watt bulbs as an example is only because that is how many we have in our TV room.

In my house I found 40 x 100-Watt bulbs, 25 x 60-Watt bulbs and 4-track bulbs. According to the GE savings calculator I will have an annual electricity savings of $625 if I will replace all my standard bulbs with energy saving light bulbs. That being said, to go and buy 65 energy saving light bulbs for this project, it will cost me $325.

To establish how much of our investment we will get back in the first year: ROI= [(Payback - Investment)/Investment)]*100 [(625-325) / 625)] * 100 48%

My first year, I will see a ROI of 48%. Only after doing these calculations does it become clear that upgrading lighting in your home to energy efficient light bulbs, could be well worth it to your pocket within the first year, even if the initial capital layout might feel a little steep.

If you think that the the average home has between 50-100 bulbs and that changing one 100-Watt bulb to an energy efficient light bulb will save you around $10/year, it quickly becomes clear how this will be one of the best investments you can make for your family.

To Make Residential Solar Power Generation

By Daniel Bridgette

We should think about renewable residential solar power energy as how best to rather than should we adopt it. The world is now pressed more than ever before to take drastic action to combat the harmful side-effects of conventional fuel like oil and gas. Actually, green and renewable energy sources such as wind, water and sunlight are nothing new. They have been around for centuries and with the renewed interest and the associated technological advancement in them, they are ready to take center-stage indeed.

The plus-points of renewable residential solar power would be simply overwhelming if only people can just get out of their misplaced comfort zone. Morally and politically, we shouldn't be held ransom by our dependence on conventional fuel like oil and gas. It's everybody's environmental responsibility to help out the energy fiasco in whatever small ways we can. For instance, we can make solar power or build wind generator in our backyard or garage. There are benefits for the world and incentives for the individual too for good measure.

Solar energy is the direct form of solar to make solar power. All other forms of renewable energy are technically of solar origin. Their panels are quite a common sight in residential housing estates these days and those photovoltaic shingles actually look hip but the best thing about them is that they are much more efficient than before and longer-lasting. The installation of residential solar power is also eligible for various government incentive programs and benefit funds and subsidies.

Wind energy is currently the fastest growing natural power platform in the world. It's indirectly a form of solar energy in that wind is temperature-induced air movement as a result of the heat from the sun. Like sunlight, wind is also inexhaustible and basically non-polluting although windmills are known to generate some noise. There are usually regulations in tower height, appearance, safety and noise level to comply with in regard to residential wind power systems. Ample real estate is necessary for the wind tower and the surrounding space also.

Most people are sold on the advantages of homemade power systems but initial cost is a common concern. DIY will overcome this setback in a breeze as it brings down the cost to only a fraction of retail prices. There are then the camp who thinks DIY is complicated and only for the handy but there's news for them too. Many homemade wind power generators and solar power system guides and handbooks that are readily available on the internet have proven to be very successful with rather regular folks.

If that's necessary, people could adopt alternative renewable energy sources while still staying within their comfort zone of the grid. Instead of continuing to put up with the ever-inflating bills from the electrical companies, why not switch primarily off-grid and make use of the grid only on a secondary basis like as a backup? This will prove to be a wise move as it saves both the green in the forests and in the pockets too.

Save Money On Your Electric Bill - Build A Wind Turbine For Your Home

By Kevin Patel

A wind turbine for home use is a simple device to harness the amazing power of the wind - the invisible force that is working all around you.

Wind power is often lost because there have not been efficient ways to capture it. But the truth is, people have been using wind power for centuries on a small scale - just remember the windmills in Holland! (Along with dutch men with wooden shoes and tulips!) Now wind power is coming onto the commercial energy scene and is going to be harnessed on a commercial scale.

Just build a wind turbine for home use!

Where Does Electricity From The Wind Come From?

A wind turbine often looks like a skinny stick with blades on the top. The wind pushes these blades, and the blades in turn, cause a rotor to circulate, creating an electrical impulse that can be captured as electricity.

Although there are two types of wind turbine designs (horizontal and vertical axis), the horizontal axis design is the more common, and probably the one you're accustomed to seeing.

Horizontal axis turbines features the main rotor shaft and generator at the top of the turbine. The horizontal axis is pointed into the wind. Most of these horizontal axis have a gearbox that allows the blades to turn quicker to generate more electricity. The tower is what creates turbulence because it is immobile and resists moving with the wind. The turbine can be pointed somewhat upward and stand well above the blades. The blades are made of durable material capable of withstanding high winds.

You may have already seen wind turbines sprouting up like giant sunflowers on windy mountain tops or coastlines. They have been around for decades. Although some people have concerns that they can kill birds and the like, this is much less likely to be a problem for the small wind turbine you will be building for home use.

Types of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines

Prior to modern wind turbines, we had windmills. Windmills were generally made of wood, short and squat, and had giant wooden blades that stretched all the way down to the ground. Windmills and also waterwheels, were used to grind grain and do milling.

Rural windmills were common in Australia and Holland before being used in the United States. Farmers found that this type of windmill was good to pump water and electricity to the barns and fields. This windmill had several blades and can still be seen today in fields. They were constructed of metal usually in order to carry electricity for lights or maybe a radio.

Modern turbines are what we have now standing in fields across the country. They feature three blades that are pointed at the ends. The reason for their unusual shape is because they have been proven to exceed wind velocity up to 6 times more, allowing for high efficiency and reliability. It's amazing how engineering improvements can be made with all the computer technology we now have available.

The advantages of this type of wind turbine include stability, tallness, durability and strength. The disadvantages may include: difficulty operating near the ground, hard to transport overseas, difficult to install, not in big demand, whether they affect radar negatively, and structural damage done to the turbines with storms and wear.

If you have been considering building one or several turbines for home use, you will benefit greatly from all the improvements in windmill technology that have taken place. Wind turbines are a great source of supplemental energy (supplementing regular electric service, or solar energy) in many places.

Land Pollution Causes And Solutions

By Jason Lawrence

The following article includes pertinent information that may cause you to reconsider what you thought you understood about topics like water, air, land and ocean pollution. The most important thing is to study with an open mind and be willing to revise your understanding if necessary.

The final type of pollution is land pollution, which is caused by putting trash into landfills, industries burying industrial waste, acid rain, pesticide pollution, etc. Land pollution can pollute the soil to the point that people can not live in an area, have to evacuate their homes and go live somewhere else, can kill plants and animals, and can eventually seep into water sources and cause more pollution.

Air pollution affects the air, water pollution affects the water and marine life, land pollution affects the land, destroying life, environment and noise that can affect our hearing. Pollution is gradually destroying our planet and unless we take drastic measures to control it, it will destroy life on planet.

The best time to learn about pollution is before you're in the thick of things. Wise readers will keep reading to earn some valuable pollution experience while it's still free.

Planning applications are inspected to see if any proposed developments may be on potentially contaminated land and requests conditions to be placed on those that are to ensure that any clean up necessary is carried out. It has agreed a strategy for inspecting and determining whether land may be contaminated and is currently prioritising these.

The Environmental Health Unit of the Council will usually become involved if the contamination is on private land, or if there is a threat to the public at large. Oil spillages and other spillages on the road, for example, would normally be dealt with by the Fire Service who may involve the Highways Cleaning Agency and the Environment Agency.

10 Ways to Reduce Waste in the City

By Amy Nutt

Waste can be anything from physical objects that become litter on the ground to chemicals and other environmental pollutants. Many people want to be able to reduce the amount of waste or waste management they contribute to their city, but it can be hard to know where to start.

Here are 10 ways people can make a difference without even going too far out of their way:

1. Recycle. Local recycling centers all have bins that can be purchased to separate recyclables from the trash. Most cities also offer a pick-up service either weekly or bi-weekly. 2. Reuse. Another of the three 'R's, reusing as many things as possible seriously puts a dent in the amount of trash that goes out. Did the queen size sheet get torn? It doesn't need to be thrown out because there are lots of people who could make use of the fabric. Same applies for broken down electronics and furniture.

3. Drink water. A filter for the refrigerator is a great way to prevent a plastic bottle build up in the trash can and keeps people healthy too. 4. Volunteer. There are many highways that need to be cleaned up and anyone can volunteer to do it. If that seems overwhelming, even just picking up one piece of trash from the ground a day can make a difference over time.

5. Keep a cup. Refills are available at a lot of gas stations and food places. Many will sell special cups that are able to be washed and will offer a discount on the price of a drink when refilling that cup. 6. Avoid over-packaging. Besides asking for paper instead of plastic, people should also consider the packaging on the things they buy. Single wrapped bread, bulk items, and reusable container products all reduce potential waste.

7. Cook. Cooking in the home means fewer wrappers, packages, and other pre-made food waste. It also gives the opportunity to make healthier meals and create smaller portions. 8. Careful shopping. Some products want people to pay more because they will last a lot longer. Despite the higher prices, that's a good reason for people to make the extra investment. It will save the environment and even a wallet to buy a product once and have it last for ten years than buy a product for a third of the price and throw it out every year.

9. Buy an upgrada
