1. The active water heating system is quicker and more efficient making it the most common system. Relying mainly on a pump or some type of mechanical device, the water is moved from the flat plate collector to the storage tank.

2. The Passive system for heating water is not as popular because it tends to be slow and may not keep up with demand. This water heating system relies on gravity to feed the water from your flat plate collector to the storage tank. Another reason it may not be as popular is that you must have your flat plate collector and storage tank at the correct angle for gravity to feed the water through.

Using solar power to heat water is very efficient and can be installed with little effort. It is a smart choice to use solar power to heat your water and is one of the first steps to going green. How Home Solar Power Systems Work

Using the Sun's energy to power your home can be split into two categories. There are passive and direct solar power systems. Passive systems generally take advantage of the Sun's thermal properties to generate heat. Thus solar water systems use the Sun's heat to make hot water to be used in the home. Creating rooms in the home or Sun traps that absorb thermal rays can also act as a form of heating for the home. However this article is more concerned with the direct use of solar power to create electricity in the home.

Electricity is created by utilizing sun light energy. The technology that does this is known as the photovoltaic (PV) cell. A cell is made from a silicon compound that throws an electron loose of the atom whenever sunlight of a certain frequency strikes the cell. When many cells are linked together in series, this forms an electric current.

A number of PV cells in a serial configuration is known as a solar module. When numerous solar modules are linked together in either a parallel or serial configuration they are known as a solar panel.

Solar panels are the devices that you may have seen on the roofs of houses in your neighborhood. They can be placed elsewhere, but the roof is often the most sensible place as it is likely to get exposed to direct sunlight and the panels can't be damaged or vandalized as easily or take up room in the yard.

The solar panels create direct current (DC) electricity. This is often pushed through a power inverter. The inverter converts DC to alternating current (AC). AC is used in the home to power most appliances.

An electrical service panel or breaker box then distributes the AC to various electrical points in the house or to the lighting system. A utility meter manages your electricity usage if you are connected to the grid.

An example of how this works is during midday. In theory this is the best time for your solar panels to create electricity. As you may be out or at work this will also be the time when you use little or no electricity. So the utility meter might go backwards indicating that you are generating electricity for the utility company.

There are two types of home solar power system - on or off the grid. On the grid is sometimes referred to as a net metering system. This refers to laws enacted in some states that require utility companies to pay a certain amount for the electricity that a home owner generates with their solar power system. Before these laws, the utility company would buy at a discounted rate making the installation of a solar panel less economically viable for the homeowner.

A true off grid system means you are not connected to a reliable power supply so you have the responsibility of creating your own energy. The primary source can be solar panels but there should always be a back up system in case you use more energy than you expected or the Sun doesn't shine as much.

Many people will have a fuel powered generator for this purpose. People more interested in renewable power sources might go for a wind power generator or some other renewable system. Another aspect of an off the grid system is that DC needs to be stored in a battery bank for use at night or when the Sun is not shining. This is another responsibility and space has to be found on the property to securely house the batteries.

Most people start with a grid tied system as it is easier to use and there is less responsibility. As you gain more experience you may think about going off the grid. This form of home solar power system will save you money on monthly utility bills but more work to run and maintain.

How Can We Reduce Our Water Usage?

Many people wander why reducing our water usage is such an important issue. Particularly as England is notorious for it's rainy climate. However, most people will be surprised to learn that some parts of the UK are experiencing water shortages. The key part to remember is that people should not start restricting their enjoyment of water. Due to the fact that we use domestic appliances on a regular basis, we do not realise how much water we end up wasting in the process. However, there are steps that can be taken to not waste water.

The average person in the UK uses around 150 litres of water everyday. The majority of this is used up in domestic chores around the house such as washing, cooking, drinking and watering the garden. We are using 50% more water than 25 years ago due to the technological advancements in domestic appliances around the house. We should think about our future and what steps can be taken to reduce water usage for long term benefits.

Tips on how to save water

Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth - Many people are often guilty of leaving the tap running while they are brushing their teeth. You should note that if you do this you are wasting 6 litres of water per minute. You can avoid this wastage by turning the tap off whilst brushing and rinsing at the end with a mug of water

Flushing the loo - You should be aware that flushing the toilet accounts for about a third of household water usage. Therefore it would help if you can avoid using it to flush other unnecessary items such as face wipes or other items that you can throw away in a rubbish bin. It has been reported that if people stopped flushing down items that can be easily thrown away in a rubbish bin, we would save about 27 millions litres of water a week

Taking a shower - A shower uses up less water than a bath. It has been estimated that a bath uses around 80 litres of water in comparison to showers which use around 30 litres of water. However, this will not apply to a power shower

Saving water in the garden - You can save water in the garden by using a watering can rather than a hose. Another point to note is that rain water is better for plants than tap water. Therefore you should strongly consider buying a water butt to collect the rain water for the garden

Use water-efficient appliances - If you are about to invest in a new appliance for the home, such as a dishwasher or a washing machine, you should look for one with an energy label. You should also try to look for a washing machine that uses less than 50 litres per wash. Try to do a full-load rather than a half-load when using the washing machine or dishwasher. You can save on energy this way too.

The New Rise of Alternative Energy

You hear more and more about alternative energies these days a lot of people have different ideas about just what it is. I wrote this article to try to clear things up.

alternative energy is commonly used to refer to sources of energy that are an alternative to coal, oil and natural gas. These fossil fuels have been the most common source of our energy for generations.

However our reliance on fossil fuels is relatively recent. It wasn't that long ago that ships were powered by sales and horses move goods and people on land.

Dutch windmills are an icon of the country. Windows are also closely associated wit old ranches of the American West.

Many people are surprised to learn that producing solar hot water heating systems was a commercially profitable business in the latter part of the 19th century and early 20th century.

I think you can see that our dependence on fossil fuels is relatively recent. Rather than something completely new, using alternative energies is a return to an older practice.

With that background, here's my working definition of alternative energy: energy from a source other than the burning of fossil fuels (again coal, oil and its derivatives and natural gas).

While many people automatically assume that alternative energy sources are renewable, that isn't necessarily so. For example, burning peat for heat is an alternative energy, but it is neither clean nor renewable.

Most sources of alternative energy have less environmental impact and burning fossil fuel. And most are renewable, meaning we don't have to worry about running out of them. These considerations have led to the increased interest in exploring alternative energy today

When people think about alternative energy solar panels and windmills are probably the most common things that come to mind. However there are many other forms of alternative energy are ready available (for example geothermal and biomass) and researchers are exploring some entirely new possibilities

My expectation is that in the not-too-distant future the tables will turn: what we consider "alternative" today will be the standard tomorrow. Burning fossil fuels will be oddball alternative.

Ensuring Safety For Plumbers

Be aware of possible oxygen deficiency and also that hydrogen sulphide, a by-product of sewage decomposition, can build up to unhealthy levels. For your own benefit, you should have a long lasting ventilation system in place for your job. Regular supply of fresh air will make some of the more challenging tasks get completed in a smoother way.

Use appropriate clothing and equipment

Plumbing can often require you to work in wet areas. In order to avoid and slips and falls,you should use appropriate footwear. It is important also to clear up any form of clutter so that you can move around quite easily. All of your tools and equipment should be kept in good working order at all times. Any form of equipment that involves cutting should be kept sharp. A useful tip to avoid injuries is to cut away from you face and body. Eye protection is extremely important, particularly if you are cutting or grinding materials.

Regular breaks

It will be much healthier for you to take regular breaks during your tasks. This will keep you well rested and healthy. Taking breaks keeps your mind active and fresh. You will also be in better shape to take on longer and more strenuous projects.

The job of a plumber should not be taken lightly. As we have seen, plumbers often have to engage and work in some dangerous conditions. However, if appropriate measures are taken, you can ensure the safety of your well-being.

Electricity Costs High - Look at Natural Gas

You might not be aware of it, but the price of natural gas can affect the price of your electricity, even when you're not burning gas. You see, the cost of fuel makes up about a third of the costs of electricity, and in Texas, that's based mostly on the price of making power via natural gas fired generation methods. When the price of natural gas changes, so does your power bill. This can cause some pretty confusing results if you don't know what's happening. Sudden price increases may seem completely unexplained

The Texas Electric Choice Act of 1999 allows retail electricity providers to make changes to their prices twice each year, basing those changes on the current cost of natural gas. This lets the market and customers benefit, because the price of power always reflects market conditions. If you're not happy with the price of your power, you have the option to pick a new supplier if you can find one that will offer you better terms. The Act, simply put, lets Texans choose where their power comes from. That allows you to pick a supplier that generates power the way you choose - helpful for people who are worried about the impact of their usage.

So, how does that price get determined? First, a composite price for natural gas is calcuated from the NYMEX Henry-Hub natural gas index. A ten day period is chosen, and the closing forward twelve month prices for every business day out of those ten days will be averaged. Then, there's an examination of the price that's arrived at - if it's more than four percent higher than the price that set the fuel factor currently being used, the supplier can file for a price increase.

The percentage by which the price of natural gas has increased is applied to the current fuel factor to make a new fuel factor, which will affect your bill in either twenty days or in forty-five days, depending on whether or not the supplier decides to request a hearing. The longer period will apply if a hearing is requested, and prices go up if the provider is successful in the hearing.

Increases in your electricity costs might seem confusing, but they're really incredibly simple. When natural gas prices go up, so does the price on all electricity in Texas, even the power made without using natural gas. If you see something unusual on your bill, don't forget to take this into account.

You probably have pondered about why anyone should have these large windows on their houses. A few things need to be understood to build your own solar power house. Where you locate your windows depend on where you reside. But in most cases the sun actually rises more to the southern side of your house.

So choose that side of the house to install the windows on. This allows for natural warming to occur, with the sun flowing into the windows. Make sure that no trees or other obstacles stand in the way of the sun directly shining into the house.

Don't use dark colors in your home to decorate with. Instead use bright and light colors that will attract the heat more evenly and benefits you more.

The materials needed to do this only cost a slight more than what a regular house would be with no solar power. Solar power is a great one time investment, after a short time you will get your investment back.

Overtime when you totally rely on the sun to heat your home and all the other functions it can perform you will not have a monthly bill because you don't pay for the sun every month like you do with other power sources. Use ceiling fans to reduce the amount of time you may need to run your air conditioner.

Ceiling fans can produce a more even amount of heat and air without having hot and cold pockets throughout the home. Use metal insulated doors that will keep out the cold and bring in the heat. Keep the doors closed during the time of day that the sun is shining in on that side of your home in order to save the heat inside your home longer.

Living in a solar power house lets you live green by conserving natural fossil fuel resources. This will also permit you not to fret on the cost of your gas and electricity, due to the fact that you will be utilizing the A #1 source for power without harming our environment.

Why Should We Harvest Rainwater?

One of the privileges of living in the UK is having easy access to water. However, there are areas in England which are experiencing water shortages. This will come as a surprise to many. Therefore this will be a wake up call to many of us who take our water for granted. There are methods of saving water, and once we start doing this, we will reap the benefits.

This is when rainwater harvesting comes in. Rainwater harvesting is simply collecting rainwater that would otherwise go to complete waste. The idea behind it, is make use of water that falls out of the sky which can easily be used for a wide variety of purposes as an alternative to just relying on mains water supply. Rainwater harvesting is not a new concept as it has been practiced for centuries, and still is in various countries.

Using the water butt

One very cost effective way of collecting rainwater is to place a water butt on your down-pipe and save the water for use in the garden or for car washing. If you have a big garden, you could even fit two water butts next to each other from the same downpipe.

If you are not that satisfied with using a water butt and wish to go one step further, you can try upgrading to a simple harvesting rainwater pump and filter. This pump is useful for creating a pressurised system that can then be used in conjunction with a hosepipe; great for watering the garden or washing the car using a hosepipe.

How can I use the rainwater?

You can use rainwater for outdoor purposes such as topping up swimming pools, washing windows watering the garden, and cleaning patios. As well as saving on drinking water-use, rainwater is beneficial for other purposes too. For example, it encourages less build-up of calcium deposits in appliances.

The use of rainwater around the house

Once the rainwater is filtered, it can even be used around the house to supply toilets or washing machines. However, it is important for the rainwater to be filtered and siphoned in order to make it suitable as a source of non-drinking water.

The type of tank that will be installed next to the house will be dependent on a number of factors. For instance, where you live, the number of people living in the household, and the amount of water you will generally need. Once the correct tank has been installed , the rainwater is then filtered and pumped into a header tank in the loft of your home where it is distributed into a household and non-drinking supply. Please note that some modifications will be required to your internal plumbing in order to separate the rainwater supply from your fresh water supply.

Some final thoughts

It is very likely that water rates will continue to get higher, making water harvesting sound more and more like a viable option to the home-owner. If we stopped to think about this in more depth, we will realise that most of our domestic water usage such as toilets and dishwashers do not actually require water from the mains supply. The long-term benefits of harvesting rainwater far outreach the notion of continuing to waste rainwater that could be used in the house. The potential savings in water bills is also something to think about.

Is Do It Yourself Solar Power Really Renewable Energy?

When a home owner decides to go with solar energy. The power company must have a full list of contacts to be able to call you in case of a power line failure. When you are pushing electricity back into the power lines, and the power company shuts their source down. Your source is still pumping power through the lines. To an unknown repairman this mistake could be deadly.

All in all solar power is the best known alternative with helping the global warming crisis. The heat is used up, unlike the heat that is given off from huge industrial power plants.

A Profitable Trip to the Dump

People are either attracted to or repelled by dumps. I know a kid who will drop anything he is doing at the moment whenever I mention I am taking a load to the county waste facility. He loves nothing more than to peer over the edge of the drive up disposal ramp and look down into the deep dumpsters and see what people don't want anymore. He might not have the stomach for this if it were the actual landfill we had to visit but I have a feeling that his inquisitive nature would still win out. He says things like "that's a perfectly good sofa" or "that lamp would look good in my room". He is inadvertently healthy with his "reuse, recycle" mindset. When I tease him about wanting to run a junkyard like Fred Sanford from his favorite old sitcom, he just grins and gives a half nod. But I know today's trip to the dump may well be taking him in the right direction when considering a future career.

A walk through a metal and plastic bone yard like Fred Sanford's lot,(aka junkyard) is an antiseptic experience when compared with a visit to a landfill site. Archaeologists, those people who like to dig, haven't skipped a beat when it comes to exploring the mountains of refuse we are building in this country. Like forensic sleuths, they don face masks and take samplings at various depths to draw conclusions about our history over the past century. Shreds of clothing, newspaper and food packaging tell a lot about how people live their lives. But there are other thought arresting environmental conclusions these archaeologists share with us.

The evidence these archaeologists are unearthing is no joking matter and environmentalists have been trying to shake the public awake on the subject for years now. A few awful facts point to an impending disaster not far down the road: The lifespan of Styrofoam in a landfill, or anywhere for that matter, is to this point unpredictable. None has ever yet decomposed. A plain old soup tin takes somewhere between 80 to 100 years to disappear and an adult diaper can be found on the landfill scene for as long as 200 years or more. The poisonous truth of these numbers needs an antidote rapidly.

Why would I mention adult diapers here in particular? Diapers of all sizes currently make up about 10% of a landfill's bulk. I am a Baby Boom tail-ender and I can see the writing on the wall. The average length of time a baby wears diapers is two and a half years. Incontinence, unfortunately, becomes an issue at the other end of life's spectrum, all the while as scientific advances continue to increase our life expectancy. My son wore diapers for two years until he got fed up with them. But who knows how many years I will need to use adult diapers before all is said and done? Diapers in a compressed and oxygen-starved landfill can take centuries to finally return to dust. It is safe to distastefully project that Boomers booms-booms will be around far longer than anyone would want unless we can figure out a way to positively manage this.

Like Sanford's world, there is still a little color in garbage. At the dumping station, household, office and construction debris are assigned to color categories of White goods or Brown goods depending on their recyclability. Appliances like dishwashers and refrigerators fill the White category which is recyclable; toasters, vacuums and old computer components are placed in the Brown category and cannot be recycled. The Brown goods dumpster is the one this boy most appreciates, peering over the rail and uneager to leave. Deep thought leading to innovation must be given to this subject of nonrecyclables, both the hardware objects in the dumpster and other brown colored goods that are not as pleasant to view.

Where his ponderings and inventiveness will take this trash-attracted boy, I cannot say. But I have an inkling these trips to the dump are more significant for him than I realize. Taking my cues from him, I am conscious that we all need to pause and consider our trash with a revolutionary eye for our children's future.

Unclogging Bathtub Drains

Most of us have battled with a clogged drain at some point in our lives. For some of us, it has become more of a frustrating routine. Many people automatically call a plumber to fix the problem, however, it is important to note that a clogged drain can be dealt with quite easily; with the help of some tools.

What can you do to clear out the blockage?

If you look closely at the clog, you may be able to identify what is causing it. In most cases it will probably be bits of hair or some soap which you should be able to easily pull out. The thought of doing this is obviously not very attractive, however it should solve your problem. Sometimes a pair of tweezers or some bended wire should do the trick.

Plunge the clog away

If you cannot pull out the substance causing the clog easily yourself, you should try using a plunger. A plunger is cost-effective and very easy to use. There should be enough water covering the bottom part of the plunger. Then place the plunger over the central part of the drain and push down and up several times exerting pressure,

This method is useful as the pressure of the plunger usually clears up the clog and opens up the pipe. To test whether you have cleared the clog, you should lift up the plunger and the water should drain away easily. If it does not, you should try the plunging method again.

Try the snake method

There's a lot more news about alternative energies recently. Different people have different ideas about just what it is. They also have different ideas about how long alternative energy has been around. I wrote this article to give my perspective on

One way to look at it is to consider alternative energy an alternative to "standard" energy. Since the mid-1800s standard energy has pretty much meant fossil fuels - coal, oil and natural gas.

Our current perspective blinds us to the fact that the emergence of fossil fuels as the dominant form of energy happened only recently in world history. Wind, animals and hydropower were the dominant sources of energy until the mid-19th century.

Dutch windmills are an icon of the country. Windows are also closely associated wit old ranches of the American West.

Another example of earlier uses of what we now consider alternative energy is solar hot water heating. Several progressively better and more convenient solar water heating systems were available commercially in the early 1900s. At one point nearly 1/3 of the homes in Florida use solar hot water.

As you consider the above and similar facts I think you can see that the dominance of fossil fuels has been very brief and very recent. As it becomes harder and more expensive to meet our energy needs with fossil fuel, we need to return to other sources.

Having said all that, let me give you my current definition of alternative energy: energy that comes from a source other than fossil fuels

While many people automatically assume that alternative energy sources are renewable, that isn't necessarily so. For example, burning peat for heat is an alternative energy, but it is neither clean nor renewable.

Most sources of alternative energy have less environmental impact and burning fossil fuel. And most are renewable, meaning we don't have to worry about running out of them. These considerations have led to the increased interest in exploring alternative energy today

Although most people think about solar panels and windmills when they think about alternative energy, the field is really much broader than that. it's very exciting to see all the research being done in areas such as biomass, tidal power, geothermal, solar chimneys and so forth.

I think we can safely expect that the use of all forms of alternative energy will increase until they become the new standard.

Countries are implementing a number of initiatives to control global warming. In the U.S. and several foreign countries, laws and treaties have been established to reduce air pollution. At last count, 30+ states offer tax incentives, rebates and cash-back programs. The cash back programs require the utilities to reimburse you when you generate more electricity than you use.

Why is Reducing Our Water Usage So Important?

Most of us probably take our water usage for granted. After all, it is so easy to leave the tap running casually in the background while we carry on with our tasks, or to not pay much attention to a dripping tap, even though a dripping a tap can waste a lot of water in a year. It is the little details that count and why now people should start taking steps to avoid wasting water. Although England is known for it's rainy climate, most people are unaware of the fact that certain parts of England are experiencing water shortages. The idea is not to stop our enjoyment of water, but to simply take some steps to avoid wasting water.

The average person in the UK uses around 150 litres of water everyday. The majority of this is used up in domestic chores around the house such as washing, cooking, drinking and watering the garden. We are using 50% more water than 25 years ago due to the technological advancements in domestic appliances around the house. We should think about our future and what steps can be taken to reduce water usage for long term benefits.

What can we do to save water?

Brushing your teeth - Many people leave the tap running while they are brushing their teeth. If you are one of those people you are wasting 6 litres of water per minute. You will save a lot of water if you turn the tap off whilst brushing and rinse at the end with a mug of water

Flushing the loo - You should be aware that flushing the toilet accounts for about a third of household water usage. Therefore it would help if you can avoid using it to flush other unnecessary items such as face wipes or other items that you can throw away in a rubbish bin. It has been reported that if people stopped flushing down items that can be easily thrown away in a rubbish bin, we would save about 27 millions litres of water a week

Have a shower instead of a bath - You will save more water if you shower instead of having a bath. This is due to the fact that a bath uses around 80 litres of water in comparison to showers which use around 30 litres of water. However, you should note that power showers use up much more water

You can save water in the garden - Using a watering can rather than a hose will be very useful in saving water. Another useful point to note is that rain water is better for plants than tap water. It would be advisable for you to buy a water butt to collect the rain water for the garden

Domestic appliances in the home - The modern dishwashers and washing machines are more up to date on energy saving. You should take advantage of this and invest in an appliance that comes with an energy label. Also, doing a full load when using the dishwasher or washing machine will assist you in saving energy

There are many places around the world where this is possible, but the overall concept is regional in nature. In other words, the power made in Vegas, stays in Vegas. The electricity generated in Colorado, stays there as well. This is not generally a bad thing since larger cities in places like Idaho are deriving a nice chunk of their power from the wind turbines which lessens the need to use coal power needed for other places like Los Angeles.

With a brand new focus on green power sources, we are positive that Wind power is at the start of a huge surge. Think about this technology for your house.

Home Wind Power really has what it takes to be a major source of power throughout the world although this is sometimes brushed over in magazines and newspapers that tend to focus on the huge wind farms that dot the countryside.

The thing is the technology for generating electricity from the wind is getting better and better all the time. We are now at a point where pretty much anyone can se it and get a DIY Wind Turbine up and running in next to no time. It's not the gigantic type that we have all seen in pictures or the TV, they are turbines that will fit in a back yard and provide enough power for a home or an office.

As users, we rarely get all excited about an issue until it starts to affect our financial situation or how we go about our days. But, fuel soon returned in abundant supplies and secondary energy sources fell beneath the average users radar screen once again. Now, in 2009, the ordinary consumer is seeing gasoline prices move higher and found a realization that global warming will be affecting finances soon. Alternate energy is back in the brains of the common consumer and, perchance, this time for good.

Where did solar go? - Solar power for the home was a big seller during the energy crisis of the 1970's. Many familys found tri-pods of solar panels on their roofs gathering what power they could. These units were found mostly in environmentally aware Washington, but soon they were found all across the World. Unfortunately, the solar power cell of the 1970's just wasn't all that cost-efficient and cost quite a bit to put in and maintain. As fossil fuel returned to the market there was small need for solar cells in a time of spectacular consumption. Companies have available empty roof space and the choice of trying something on a larger scale to see if it works versus continuing to pay higher fuel bills and environmental costs. The whole concept is extremely self serving. There is no environmental consideration involved. If the company doesn't use solar panels they have to pay fuel costs and air clean-up expenses along with variable fuel charges. They try out the Polycrystalline solar modules and see if they work now. If they do, the company can; commit to a full solar panel program with even more efficient solar panels, significantly reduce fuel costs and almost eliminate air cleaning needs along the way. There is little environmental about it. It's just good business. After industry gets rolling, solar panel costs will drop like a stone and the consumer will jump on board because it's just good business.

The Reality of International Emissions Trading

As governments look for means to control costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the concept of international emissions trading comes into focus. Just as commodities are traded on the global market, the intention is to allow companies to trade off any unused emissions between themselves.

International emissions trading aims to take advantage of economic incentives, which are being put in place with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In this way, it is hoped that air pollution will be reduced prior to the advancement of regulations.

Governments realize that certain companies may need to emit a larger amount of environmentally damaging gas than another. In an international emissions trading scenario, the government will issue credits to each company allowing them to emit a specified amount of gas. Thus, if one company needs to emit more than the other, they can trade credits. This procedure is known as cap and trade.

The cap and trade system is in use in the European Union and was first seen in the United States during the "acid rain" program. The system is expected to lower carbon emissions worldwide, as part of the global treaties put in place to control greenhouse gases.

There is automated carbon emissions tracking software that enables a company to track their carbon footprint in real time and take inventory of direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions. This data shows a companys impact on the environment, identifies areas of reduction, and manages emission allocation opportunities.

Under international emissions trading, companies that pollute less are rewarded for their efforts, while those that are major contributors to pollution pay more for their emissions. The concept encourages enterprises to lower their emissions in an effort to reduce global warming.

The United States and other governments are active in the introduction of laws and treaties to help reduce global warming. There are a number of chemicals known to be particularly impactful. Chlorofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, hydrochlorofluorocarbons, and carbon dioxide, for example. Regulations call for the elimination of products that contain these gases, and as such, refrigerant gas used in heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems or commercial refrigeration and air-conditioning systems is being phased out.

Free market environmentalism is seeing as the great incentive behind the success of international emissions trading. Governments simply set limits and companies can trade within those limits, with the powerful incentive of cost savings driving their voluntary emission reductions.

Basics of DIY Wind Turbine Construction

You've finally decided to go green and make your own wind turbine to power your house - once you've collected all the parts, how do you assemble everything?

Here's a brief 9-step tutorial on how you can now assemble all the parts to construct your own wind turbine:

Part 1: First, buy (either from your local hardware store or eBay) or find all the components - including a DC power motor, PVC pipe, metallic sheets, tower, hub, charge controller, deep-cycle better, AC inverter, dump load, and enough nuts and bolts to connect 3 blades to your hub and tower.

Part 2: Now, cut your PVC pipe into an approximately 3 ft. long piece, and cut the pipe itself into 4 pieces (since you need 3 blades). Shape each blade so that one side comes to a 2" point. The blades should each be between 4' and 6' long.

Part 3: Now, make holes on the narrow end of your blades so that their positions align with the holes in your hub.

Stage 4: You may then weld or bolt a coupling in the middle of your hub, and then join the 3 blades to the hub and then attach the hub to the motor shaft " small steel bars measuring 12 by 2 should be fine in most cases.

Phase 5: Align the blades and the hub by marking each blade with a number and making sure that the same blade does not land at the bottom every time " if so, then you may have to scrape some metal off your connected metal bars.

Part 6: Take the DC motor shaft and slide it into the hole in the middle of your hub, also making sure that the hub itself is securely fastened.

Part 7: Now, look at your tail shaft to figure out the height and make a hole through the top part of the tower, above where the tail shaft's upper end will go.

Part 8: Next, cut the tail shaft from your metal sheets so that it's about 3' to 4' long, and attach it to the tower using a flat bracket.

Stage 9: Ensure that the hub and the blades are connected to the tower and then wire the remaining components to one another. You must connect the DC motor to the charge controller, which is to be connected to the battery and then the battery to the AC inverter, which will ultimately go into your utility box. The gauge or cross section of the wire required here will depend on the materials you have used. Ask your electrician for help if you're unsure of this step.

This is a very quick overview of the DIY wind turbine construction process, but you should now have a fairly good idea of what it takes to make your own wind turbines.

The wind turbine described above should generate 300-500 watts of power, assuming that your mean wind velocity is a minimum of 10-20 mph.

Why We All Should Use The Power Of The Sun - Several Really Great Reasons

It warms up our faces and grows our food; solar energy is our life blood and gives us everything that we need to live on. Using its potency, however, has escaped the worlds people, or at least until relatively recently. Exploiting the sun's full potency may be a long way into the future, but until applied science shows us the true possibilities of the sun's power we can use what we have as a matter of necessity, economic need and personal responsibility.

Maybe you are fairly happy with the status quo of today. Maybe you feel all is fine and you don't feel the need to change a system that's worked for over a century. If you do, consider a few of these benefits to solar power and you may just recognize its potential in a somewhat more responsible, yet selfish, light.

But I don't care about the current situation? Maybe everything in the world is all right as far as you are concerned. The very last thing that you give a damn about are plants, clean air and pure water. Heck, the drinking water turns up every time you turn on the tap, the heater comes on when it's cold, the light switch brings you light. What is there to worry about anyway? Smart Grid Projects Save On Costs, Environment

In an effort to reduce harmful greenhouse gases that cause global warming and in a move towards energy independence, business enterprises and entities, in addition to the retail sector, are putting in place smart grid projects. The goal is to save on energy costs.

There are a number of different smart grid projects available to business entities. Companies can select, according to their particular infrastructure, from renewable generation techniques -- solar panels or wind power --, energy management software to monitor and report the usage of energy, or smart meters, which have been shown to be particularly effective at monitoring electricity use.

As time goes on, regulators and policymakers at the federal level, together with environmentalists, are increasing their push toward energy efficiency. The recent economic stimulus plan introduced by the Obama administration introduced billions of dollars to help modernize the country's energy grid. Business entities have been told to tap into this federal funding to help them improve and update their energy infrastructure.

As the retail sector and other business entities move towards electricity and other energy efficiency, reliability and security, there will be a greater reliance on information technology in playing a major role in providing the means to success. Information management will be of utmost importance to achieving interoperability of an entitys infrastructure of devices and systems.

In order to leave a lasting legacy in energy independence, smart grid projects are being reviewed in several key areas. For example, business entities can track how that power is used and can control their own usage, they can implement the ability to lower their bills by allocating some of their usage to off-peak, they can drill down their energy usage to the device level, and they can better fulfill their needs through demand response.

Because certain energy types are a major contributor to global warming, smart grid projects will benefit the environment immensely by reducing pollutants, greenhouse gas emissions and water usage. Action is needed in order to preserve the health of our planet in the future.

A major document is expected to be released in September 2009, directed by the U.S. Congress as one of the initiatives aimed at energy efficiency and independence. The National Institute of Standards and Technology, part of the US Commerce Department, is to create a Smart Grid Interoperability Standards Roadmap. This roadmap will establish priorities in distribution and transmission, set the building to grid standards for commercial entities, industrial to grid for the industry sector, home to grid for residential consumers and will also establish business and policy issues as well as cyber security.

Energy management software will be one of the keys to provide companies with extensive information about their consumption as energy costs continue to rise. This will be a valuable tool to compare usage throughout their sites and locations, and by combining historical with real-time data, will be able to manage usage, control costs and implement energy efficiency projects.

True Costs of Wind Turbines

Many times people get lured in by advertisements claiming that he can build a windmill in his backyard, but they hardly tell you about specific cost attached to each part of the windmill.

Some say that you could do it for under $50, but this is tough unless you happen to have lots of spare metal and other hardware at your house already.

What materials will you need and what will they cost? Here's a quick overview:

1) First, you need a generator - try to get a 30-40 vdc one on eBay for between $30 and $50. This will work well at lower wind speeds as well.

2) Sheet metal for the construction of the tail and body is available online or at the store for around five dollars.

3) You'll need PVC pipe to make the rotor blades for your wind turbine - this is available for around $10, either online or at the hardware store.

4) To attach the blades of your wind turbine to the motor, you need a "hub" - either make it yourself from circular metal alloy, or buy it at your hardware store for $10.

5) The easiest way to get a "tower" to support your wind turbine is to pick an old satellite TV tower - or you can buy the spare parts for $10.

6) A deep-cycle battery for energy storage can be purchased online for around ten dollars, but you can probably get one free at a golf course or forklift distributor that may have old batteries.

7) Battery protection in the form of a Charge Controller will cost around $25.00 on Ebay.

8) A dump load for the reception of any extra energy will not cost you anything if you have an old water heater or back-up battery pack around.

9) If AC power is being used, you need an AC Inverter. If you need one, you can get one for between $50 and $75, depending on the wattage needed.

10) Finally, expect to spend about $10 on hardware and tools to attach the blades and hub, like screwdrivers, sockets, grinders, jigsaws, and sandpaper.

We see that the costs of constructing a wind turbine are between $160 and $225, but if you have a few of these items already, theoretically, you could accomplish this for under one hundred dollars!

Learning how to make your own electric car is not as tricky as you might think as there are many kits available that include everything you will need. You should try and get as much information as you can on electric cars and converting gas cars as this will help you recognize issues and problems that may occur when you are making your own electric car. If this is the first time doing this conversion having someone with experience around can be a great help.

It is recommended that you convert a lightweight car to an electric engine as lighter cars can get the most savings when using electricity versus gas. Though it is possible to convert any car from gasoline to electric. It is also recommended that you convert a car with manual transmission, as automatic transmissions tend to use up a lot of energy. You also won't stall out as much as it does not matter which gear you start in when the engine is electric.

Many individuals look for an inexpensive car to convert but you don't want the car to fall apart anytime in the near future. Converting a car to electric will take a lot of time and you want the car to last. So do not chose the cheapest car on the lot but make sure you get a reliable car that will last. Also make sure the car has a good spot to mount the batteries, as having the batteries where a passenger will sit is not recommended.

It is recommended that you use an electric conversion kit as you are guaranteed that all the parts will fit and work together and it will include all the wiring and other equipment you will need for the conversion. These kits have been road tested so you know that they will work. You can get all of the parts together yourself but it may make things more difficult as certain pieces may not work with other parts.

It will take you a few weeks if you are working in your spare time but basically you are taking out the old gas engine and installing a new electric engine. Make sure you follow all of the directions and see if you can get help from, a friend, particularly one who is good with cars.

When converting a car make sure you can use the car for what you intended. An electric car works great as a commuter car but if you are interested in driving long distances with a heavy load in the back then an electric car is not very economical.

DIY Wind Turbine Crash Course

You've managed to gather all the parts you will be utilizing for your wind turbine, you have also estimated your wind turbine expenditure, and you are now fully determined to construct your own windmill. How do you assemble all the items you have gathered?

Here's how you do it in 9 easy steps:

Part 1: First, buy (either from your local hardware store or eBay) or find all the components - including a DC power motor, PVC pipe, metallic sheets, tower, hub, charge controller, deep-cycle better, AC inverter, dump load, and enough nuts and bolts to connect 3 blades to your hub and tower.

Phase 2: To start with, cut the PVC pipe into a 3 ft long piece, and then cut the pipe into four pieces " 3 will be used for blades, and one shall be a spare. You will have to shape each blade so that one side tapers into a 2 point. The blades should of approximately 6 ft long " they could be smaller, but surely not smaller than 4 ft in which case they may not spin easily.

Part 3: Now, make holes on the narrow end of your blades so that their positions align with the holes in your hub.

Phase 4: Now, attach a coupling to the middle of your hub and join the 3 blades to this hub, attaching the hub itself to the motor shaft - you should be able to do this with 12" by 2" steel bars.

The type of wire you need to use depends on the materials you've used - ask your electrician for help if all else fails.

The Basics of Wireless Network Installation

The appeals of Wireless network installation are numerous. The first, of course, is a limit to the number of wires running through a home or office. A wireless network also allows for a very simple installation, since your knowledge of wiring and electrical work can be minimal, but still be adequate for installing a wireless network.

Additionally, the wireless configuration allows you to have a great deal of flexibility in how you locate equipment around the home or office.

In order to set up a wireless network that is internet ready, you will need only two primary components.

The first is wireless LAN (or Local Area Network) cards. It's important that each PC on the network have its own wireless card.

They need to be inserted into an unused PCI slot located inside of a PC. The antenna portion of the card should be at the back of the PC with the antenna extending up.

Installing the LAN card is not a complicated operation, and can be accomplished by a novice in computer installation. Simply open the computer case carefully and find the slot where the LAN card fits. There is likely only one available, but any computer that does not have a built in wireless system will have a LAN slot.

Ground yourself by touching something metal or plastic to dispel static, then screw the card into the slot with the screws provided. Make the electrical connections, replace the PC covers, then start up the computer. You'll need to intall drivers specifically for that LAN card. Repeat for each computer that will be on the network.

The second component of a basic wireless network is the wireless router. These routers allow you to share a single internet connection between numerous computers. Depending on the router's specifications, they can accommodate between four and sixteen computers on a single wireless router.

If you have internet from your cable provider, they may have supplied a cable modem, but those are rarely wireless. You'll need to plug a wireless router into the modem, then route your PCs through it. If you have a DSL or ADSL connection, purchase a DSL modem.

You'll then configure your network. Log onto your router/modem through your PC. Read the owner's manual for the router for specific directions. You'll want to direct it to automatically assign IP addresses to any PC attached to it. It's recommended that you stick to basic network configurations and use the 192.168.01 as the first IP address and the 0.9 as the ending address, which gives you the potential for eight additional devices to be installed, if you like.

You want your router to be the primary gateway and also the primary DNS, so both of these boxes should be set to the router IP (182.168.0.1). Other boxes should be blank or contain default indicators.

The next step is to go to the Network Connections screen in a PC start menu, right click on wireless network and go through properties to indicate that you want the router to obtain an IP address automatically.

Power From The Sun - Free Solar Energy

The Sun is like a giant power station, making solar energy for us each and every day. Without this daily dose of solar power, Earth would not be even close to the same. Literally the difference would be like night and day.

The term solar energy is used to describe electromagnetic radiation released by the sun. This radiation is extremely important to the Earths biosphere, and is the source of our existence. It is the catalyst for life as we know it on our planet.

Electromagnetic (EM) radiation comes in many different wavelengths. We describe EM radiation based on its wavelength with Gamma rays being the shortest, and Radio waves the longest. Earths solar energy falls in the middle, composed of infrared, ultraviolet, and visible light waves. This is a good thing because all wavelengths between Gamma rays and Ultraviolet rays are harmful to humans and most other things on Earth.

Solar energy is the primary element for Photosynthesis, the method by which plants make energy for growth. Plants in term provide us with food, wood, medicines, and more.

The Earths natural landscapes, they absorb solar energy and produce heat. It is the heat absorbed by mountains and plains that create local wind patterns. It is the heat absorbed by the oceans that creates the famous currents. Solar energy is responsible for thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes. It melts the mountain snows which form many of our rivers.

The mountains, plains, oceans, and lakes, they too absorb solar energy and convert it to heat. Gradually everything becomes warm and wind patterns develop. Glaciers melt and create rivers. Rain storms distribute water, fill up aquifers, and sustain forests and plant growth. Ocean currents are set in motion.

Each and every day we should all be giving thanks to the Sun. It may be the most important element to our existence which we take for granted. Imagine if one day we woke up and there was no Sun? It would be like losing power at your home, but a million times worse. Probably most people would fall into an immediate panic.

Thinking about it like that, we should probably all wake in the Morning and give thanks to the Sun. It is the single item in our existence we take most for granted. What if the Sun disappeared for one day? Just think of the mayhem and chaos this would create. And think of all the solar energy that would be lost all over the world.

So if theres one thing for sure, its that solar energy is here to stay. We are solar energy, its the reason we can see, and reason we can eat. It is embedded in virtually everything that surrounds us. When the Sun goes, we will go with it.

The time has come now to discuss solar energy in different terms. Mankind has become clever these past few generations, and developed new methods to harness this energy. We now have ways to convert solar energy directly into electricity. And weve developed several new inventions for absorbing solar energy and making high temperature heat.

With all the choices on the market its hard to know exactly where to start. What kind of benefits can be obtained by harnessing solar energy? How practical is it, and how much money can be saved in the long run? The truth is, in utilizing solar energy everybody will have a different idea and different purpose. Its best to begin with a discussion of the various technologies and their rewards, and allow the reader to form his own concepts for moving forward.

Want to Make Your Own Homemade Solar Cells?

You may be interested in making solar cells for your own house - clean energy is one of the latest and fastest-growing trends in the world.

Many sites and resources claim it's "easy," but this is actually quite far from the truth - it's time-consuming and expensive, especially if you want to power your entire house.

What's the problem with homemade solar cells?

1. You need to buy lots of equipment at the hardware store, like copper foil sheets, wires, and an electric stove.

2. You also need to spend an hour or so heating up the copper piece, and then cooling it down so you can use it - and 1 hour per cell adds up.

3. The hard reality is that you will need thousands of solar cells if you want to power your house completely with solar energy. You can do the math: you'll need thousands of hours of free time to pull this off.

Of course this will cost money as well, but you will be saving in the long run - as it would likely take half a year of nearly full time work to go full solar DIY.

Solar panel installation is expensive, but the parts themselves are not expensive: it's all because of the installation and assembly of the panels.

A much smarter DIY project would be to purchase some cheap pre-made cells and save money on assembly and installation.

So, is making your own homemade solar cells always a bad idea?

If you have tons of spare time, then go ahead and make your own solar cells - but the rest of us would be better served by buying the parts used, and then doing the assembly work ourselves.

Are Homemade Solar Cells a Good Idea?

You may be interested in making solar cells for your own house - clean energy is one of the latest and fastest-growing trends in the world.

Many sites and resources claim it's "easy," but this is actually quite far from the truth - it's time-consuming and expensive, especially if you want to power your entire house.

So what is wrong with a DIY solar cell project?

1. You will need to go to the hardware store to buy sheets of copper and wire along with an electric stove, separate from your kitchen stove.

2. An hour or so is needed only to make a single solar cell. This is because you have to heat it up with an electric stove or electric heater, and then you have to let it cool down so that you can test it.

3. You would need thousands of solar cells to power a house - and without thousands of hours of free time this will prove to be a costly, lengthy project.

Therefore a simple question may haunt your mind: if homemade solar cells are so problematic, what's the better alternative?

If you still want to build your own solar panels, try looking on eBay for damaged cells.

This would cost money but this would also save you precious time and money - which you would have lost if you had made your own solar cells.

And while it is true that having solar panels installed is expensive, it is not because of the parts. It is because of the installation and assembly of the panels.

But the process I just mentioned is simultaneously easier and more economic than making your own cells by yourself. Therefore, my suggestion is that you buy the necessary cells and assemble them yourself without trying to make everything yourself.

So is it a bad idea to try to make your own solar cells?

They may cost money to set up however ultimately, they recoup the cost and save money in the long run.Solar, wind, and water are renewable sources of energy that are friendly to the environment. Basics of Personal Wind Power

These days it seems like everyone is looking to go green. If youre one of those people who is thinking of using wind power to keep your house powered up, youre not alone.

There are several choices in using wind power to get rid of you electric company, the cheapest and quickest of which is to buy a wind turbine that has been manufactured for homeowners.

To totally power your house, you are looking at an investment of anywhere from $5000 to $20,000. Assuming you have average electricity usage, this investment pays for itself within about 10 to 15 years.

This return on your investment is tolerable, but to get the most bang for your dollar, the best option is to go the do-it-yourself route and build your own wind turbine.

Youll need to put together the following materials to build your own wind turbine:

Youll see that building your own wind turbine isnt as easy as putting together your own solar panel. Youll notice that this is due to the fact that the wind turbine is more mechanically complex.

The best part is that a homemade wind turbine will output more power than a solar device. If you do it right and have enough wind you could get up to 500 watts from one wind device. This means you'll only need a few to power yourself solely on wind.

Before you begin you should make sure you have enough wind to make it worth you while, otherwise all your work will be for naught. Your best bet is to only use wind turbines if you average wind speed is at least 10 mph. If you are in a low, tree-covered area, then wind power probably isn't you best bet.

If you aren't in a wind friendly area your best bet is to go with solar panels instead.

High Power Photovoltaic Solar Panels - The Next Generation

A solar panel is basically a device that enables the collection of and conversion of solar energy into electrical energy or even heat.

The Concept of Solar Panels

Solar panels are also known as photovoltaic panels and the atoms that are present in these panels are excited by the action of the sun's energy. These atoms are present in a silicon layer that lies between two panels known as protector panels.

A formation of electric current takes place as a result of the action of the electrons from the aforementioned, excited atoms, and these are then used by a myriad of external devices. The history of solar panels dates back by hundreds of years, when their sole purpose was to heat the water for use in homes. Many-a-times specially shaped mirror is used for the concentration of light onto a tube of oil. Due to this action, there is a heating up of oil and as these heated oil travels through a vat of water, it instantly results in the boiling of this water. The steam that is a resultant of this process of boiling is used to turn a turbine for the generation of electricity.

The History of Solar Panels

It was in the year 1839 that the photovoltaic effect was discovered by Antoine Cesar Becquerel, a French physicist. His experiment in this regard involved the placement of an electrolyte cell in an electrolyte solution; two metal electrodes made up the electrolyte cell.

When this device was exposed to sunlight, Becquerel found that the generation of electricity saw a marked increase. It was in 1883 that Charles Fritts coated sheets of selenium with a thin layer of gold and built the first genuine solar cell. Over a period of time many experiment were conducted and discoveries were made when it came to solar cells. Albert Einstein also published his thesis on the photoelectric effect, during this time and also won the Nobel Prize for his research.

It was space satellites that made large scale use of solar electrical energy for the first time. By 1980, the United States of America, produced a solar cell which provided an efficiency of nearly twenty percent, this efficiency was increased to around twenty four percent in the next two decades and currently there are a few companies that are manufacturing solar cells that offer efficiency levels of nearly twenty eight percent

The Working of Solar Panels

Pure silicon forms the basic element of all solar panels as its makes for an ideal platform that aids transmission of electrons. This material is used on the plates that form a solar panel. Solar panels are also created by combining silicon panels with other elements, with negative or positive charges.

The Silicon atoms are exposed to the bombardment of photons when negative plates of solar cells are faced towards the sunlight. Once all free electrons are drawn away from the plates, enough electricity is generated to power various electronic appliances that do not require too much electricity to power them.

Features and Types of Solar Panels

Basically there are three types of solar panels, namely mono-crystalline solar panels, polycrystalline solar panels, and amorphous solar panels. The life expectancy of solar panels depends on the type of solar panels selected by you; generally its around twenty years or so.

Solar panels do not require sustained maintenance for their upkeep although; if lead acid batteries are used then they must be checked every six months and topped up with distilled water if required. If you are looking for a solar panel for your needs and do not know what size to go for, then the best way would be to calculate your average consumption of electricity on a daily basis. This would give you a fair idea of what kind of solar panel to go for. The Basics of Solar Panel Construction

Existing instructions for solar panel construction make it sound much more complicated than it actually is.

The fact is that constructing solar panels yourself is not difficult unless you do not have an understanding of what you are trying to do and a concise plan to do it.

I will give you a brief overview and show you how simple the process is:

1. First, decide if you actually need to construct your own panel. You might have an easier time of it if you just find one that someone else is throwing out or needs to give away - and that could solve your problems quickly.

2. If you want to do it anyway, here's the quick-start guide:

You might be very enthusiastic about completely eliminating your utility bills, but I would not attempt this as your first project.

You should start from a small project in the beginning and then expand on your work. Try to make a 40 or 50-cell solar panel at first phase, observe how it works and then follow through towards the bigger one accordingly.

Lets get started with your first solar panel project:

To begin with, get the needed supplies together. You need 40 or 50 solar cells, which can probably be obtained on Ebay, some plywood (You can have it precut if necessary.)You also need solder, a rosin flux pen, and tabbing wire.

Next, place the cells in a series, face them down and then drop a small amount of solder on each of these tabs one by one.

Next, wire together all the cells so that the wire goes from the back of one cell to the front of the next cell (you connect the tabbed parts on each one). This is the most tedious part of the whole process.

Then, each individual row is required to be connected in parallel and then you have to fix the cells to the plywood with silicone.

And in the end, at the bottom of the plywood, drill holes to pass the positive and negative wires from the solar cells. These wires are then to be connected to the inverter at first and then to the power box on your house.

If you're uncertain about how to connect everything at the end, call the electrician or the power company for assistance - better safe than sorry.

This is a very quick overview, but you get the basic idea from this article. Making your own solar panels is not difficult; the most tedious part of this whole process is wiring the solar cells together, and youll get better at it each time you do it.

How to Find Cheap Solar Cells with Minimal Effort

While theres much to be said for do-it-yourself energy projects, homemade solar cells are extremely time-consuming and take a lot of work.

If you are not planning to make your own cell then the alternatives left are " either to find them (possible only if you have a friend at a solar company) or otherwise you will have to buy them.

The first place you can look to find low-cost solar cells is at the hardware store. Highway patrol is another good source that sometimes can have solar panels left over from car crashes.

However, the easiest way to find solar cells at a reasonable price is to search for damaged solar cells online through eBay.

First, search eBay for broken solar cells or chipped solar cells which will throw open a number of bids.

Dont forget to read the descriptions before bidding to make sure the cells are not damaged beyond repair. Also check to see that they all are about the same size so that they can be assembled together on a single panel.

For slightly more money you can also search for transparent cells or newer cells by major companies, such as Evergreen Solar. This alternative will cost a bit more, but it will make it easier to determine how many cells youll need to use on a panel.

How much would you be spending?

This entirely depends on the condition of low-cost solar cells when you bought them from eBay, but if you follow what we suggested above, you would not be spending more than a few cents for each cell.

Fully efficient and professionally manufactured cells like those from Evergreen Solar would be costly; however, you may not have to pay in excess of approximately ten cents for each cell.

In addition to the above, the shipping charge will cost you quite a bit. Sometimes you may also pay upwards of $20 depending upon the location of the seller and the shipping method.

By a quick calculation here, you may have to spend approximately $30-$50 for 500 chipped solar cells on eBay " which may not be sufficient to totally do away with your electricity bill, but quite substantial enough to bring it down and make you richer by thousands of dollars every year.

In our quest for becoming a greener Earth, one of the best solutions is the continued usage and utilization of hydroelectric energy. Hydroelectric energy is created by utilizing the gravitational force of falling or flowing water. This process is quite reminiscent of the way that wind energy is created. Most people dont know, but roughly 7% of the utilized power in the United States is created using hydroelectric energy.

The primary way of achieving this is by utilizing dams. By creating a dam, and preventing water from flowing in a river behind it, it is possible to create an enormous amount of potential energy. Once released from the dam, the water flows through a turbine and an electric current is created which can then be utilized. This energy can be used to power homes and businesses.

This rather elegant method of creating energy without drilling for coal or burning fossil fuels enables us to benefit from a natural resource to create hydroelectric energy. This energy source not only does not pollute the Earths atmosphere but also reduces green house gasses, and consequently, the threat of global warming. Better yet, this energy is virtually limitless, as the water from streams and rivers is provided by rain fall and is naturally replenished.

Obviously, hydroelectric energy can only be used in countries where such water sources are available. However, fortunately this is the case in many countries. An additional advantage of this energy source is that it is relatively cheap; after the hydroelectric power plants are built, they are easy to operate and do not require a lot of expenses. Better yet, this is just the beginning: the technology continues to mature, so it is expected to become cheaper and more widely spread.

No matter where the energy comes from: sun, wind, water, fuel or coal, we clearly are dependent on it, as it is used in a great variety of ways. Thus, using water to obtain electricity is one of the best alternatives for the reasons we mentioned. Not only it can be used to power home appliances and factories, but it could also be used to store energy which is later reused in vehicles. In conclusion: it is expected that as this technology continues to mature, it will become cheaper and more widespread.

The net meter is an interesting device in its own right. About 35 states use an electric meter that records usage in both directions. When rotating clockwise it records the electricity you use. When the same meter is running counter-clockwise it is reducing your electric bill. Some call it an electrical bank. It's almost like pumping water into a water tower where it is stored to be used at a later date.

The risks are mostly financial. The main areas of concern are: not enough wind and possible equipment failure. In both cases, the propeller is not turning and no power is generated. Unlike solar though, the wind can theoretically be blowing 24 hours a day, and every minute the propeller is turning means more in the electrical bank.

One of the nice offsets is the rebates and tax credits you will get for installing a unit. In some cases, $11,000 or more is paid to you to offset the cost of the windmill. In California, this could bring the cost of install down to around 4,600 dollars.

Is this for everyone? No. The space the unit takes up, the 35-50 foot monopole, and city codes and permit fees have to be considered. What about a city? Could a city use this to offset operating costs? Could a city planner's office install 20 or more units on unincorporated land and offset the cost of running city offices, fire and police departments? It is worth a look.

Household Heating And Saving Energy

The first person of any real significance to bring energy conservation into the public eye was President Jimmy Carter in 1977 during Americas oil crisis. He advised Americans to dial down the thermostats in their homes to conserve heating fuel.

Although this was said over thirty years ago, it still applies today, its the very simple concept of, the less energy used, the more will be conserved, and turning down the thermostat is probably the most simple and effective method of using less energy.

Heating larger rooms is usually the most expensive part of the energy bill for most households. A step as simple as turning the thermostat down by around one degree can make around a two percent difference in your overall heating bill.

Your boiler will be responsible for maintaining the difference between the outside and inside temperatures. There can sometimes be a big difference between the two of these, especially in winter. If this difference can be reduced at any time, it should be done, even if it can only be reduced by one or two degrees, this will still make a difference because the heating system will have to be switched on for a shorter amount of time.

The main flaw in this theory is of course, that your house will get colder. Well, the former president addressed this issue as well, his solution was simply, put some more layers of clothing on!

At first these changes in temperature may be difficult, but after a while, wearing sweaters and thick socks in the house will become what you naturally do when you wake up or come home.

Of course, these principles are the same the other way around. During the summer months, it can be tempting to have your air conditioning on quite high to keep your house cool from the sweltering heat outside, but the same concepts should apply for this as they do in the winter, but turn the temperature the opposite way.

To summarise, you should try to have the temperature of your house as close as you can to the temperature outside and adjusting your clothing appropriately so you can achieve this to a greater extent.

How Important is it for the City to Recycle Items?

Almost everyone understands the importance of recycling our byproducts, but in this age of consumption it is more important then ever that cities and municipalities encourage this and provide more easily accessible resources for recycling in order to keep local communities from drowning in a sea of trash.

Most households use and discard an incredible amount of products that could be easily recycled every week. Nearly every byproduct we use has the potential to be recycled to some extent or another. The list is long and includes plastic beverage containers, newspaper, cardboard containers, aluminum soda cans, egg cartons, old phone books, etc., etc. While each household is responsible for recycling its own consumer products, the city should also be responsible for providing a safe and easy way for those individual households to drop off their recyclable items.

Many towns and cities have local drop off locations where the residents can dispose of their recyclable trash for free. Not every city makes these resources available, however, and few advertise their existence and location to the public. Sometimes the information is made accessible in the community pages of the local phone book. Some cities even rely on the local trash disposal company to provide special recycle bins to their customers, but they tend to charge an extra fee for each extra bin.

The city government must take the initiative to promote county recycling within their community and to make the receptacles more readily accessible. Recycling is a necessary and beneficial resource for any community. By making recycling drop off points easily accessible and well known to their own residents, the city stands to enhance the productivity and standing of their community while even making a little extra money for the city coffers. Many recyclable items, such as aluminum cans and glass bottles, generate a small return from the recycling company and when submitted in bulk the result can be a tidy sum that could be used to benefit the community in many ways. Planting trees, providing funds for the local little league team or purchasing textbooks for schoolchildren could all be free money well spent.

The initial cost of setting up a city recycling location can be minimal in comparison to the return on such an investment, and it doesnt have to be fancy, just functional. Once the drop off location is established, the city must make its presence well known to the residents in order to make full use of its potential. The city employees and administration itself should lead the way by recycling all of their suitable trash and placing recycle bins in all city buildings. In addition, the city could start a campaign to reduce and reuse, which has become popular in many rural areas.

With so many disposable items being used and discarded every day all across the world, it is mandatory that cities get more involved in the trash habits of its townsfolk. To the city that commits to leading the way for more community wide recycling, the benefits can outweigh the landfill.
