Interview with a Mechanical Engineer from the UK's North Sea!
How long have you been working in the industry? I've been working as a mechanical engineer in the industry for the last five years.
How did you get into this line of work? Prior to working in the Offshore industry, I was in the Royal Navy as marine engineer for six years. After I left I simply transferred my skills to the offshore sector.
What does your current job involve? I'm currently employed by Sparrows Offshore which is a lifting and mechanical handling contractor to the oil companies who operate in the North Sea. At the moment I'm working as a plant maintenance technician. Our company leases the heavy lifting cranes found on the offshore platforms. Our cranes can sometimes be in operation for 24 hours a day in a variety of harsh weather conditions, so it is essential they are frequently inspected and serviced to ensure they remain fully operational.
How long do you work on the oil rig? I'm currently contracted to work 154 days in each year, with a maximum of three straight weeks in one go. As my employer has heavy lift crane equipment in a number of locations, both in International locations and in the North Sea, my job means I'm never in the same location for long.
What do you most enjoy about your job? I enjoy a challenging task, and the flexible lifestyle that my job provides. I also enjoy the travel involved, and working in international locations.
What is your most memorable experience in the North Sea? I've have some great memories in the North Sea, it would be hard to pick one. I enjoy working alongside some highly skilled and experienced individuals. The teams you work with offshore really make a difference to your day at work.
What advice would you give to people considering a career in the North Sea? I would advise those interested in pursuing a career offshore not to be afraid to spend the money to get the all essential offshore survival and medical tickets. You have to persevere to get your first start. I would advise people to be determined in the search for their first job. If you are disciplined and work hard, your effort will be recognized, and in return your job will provide you with a rewarding and comfortable lifestyle.
Thank you for the interview Kris, we wish you continued success with your career in the North Sea!
