And my old hometown of Clear Spring is a really rough place if? you're something other than white. Over half of a local church congregation once walked out rather than hear their pastor's mentor, who happened to be a black man, preach a sermon. And a white acquaintance of mine from elsewhere recently stopped into a bar in Clear Spring, sat down, had barely started his beer when a local came up to him and said, "What d'you think 'bout this nigger Obama?" Yeah.

Hagerstown has a significant minority community, but the city and Washington County around it tends to be extremely racist. The klan has pretty much faded? away, although it's still here in very small numbers and isn't active except for the occasional poorly attended rally at a battlefield or state park, but there is an instinctive, casual racism that lays over every inch of this place like a layer of dust.

We used to tap in early to mid march when i was a kid. guys with south facing sugar bushes a tapping in late jan early feb. I will say its not all warming. Sugaring operations are huge today.But even with that , its still early. A buddy of mine went through Haggerstown in the sixties. He said the clan was big back then He also thought there were a couple distinct cultures at that time.? I'd be interested in your thoughts.
